Discovery is the recording project of Rostam Batmanglij and Wes Miles, friends who began recording together in the summer of 2005. One year later they had committed themselves to their respective bands, Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot, but nonetheless continued to record together when they both found themselves in the same city. The project is many things: it's partly an attempt to realize Wes' concept of a band where everyone plays synthesizers, and of Rostam's concept for an album where handclaps keep the backbeat instead of snares drums. It's an embrace and also a commentary on the pop music of the past decade, of booming 808 bass and jittery sixteenth note high-hats. Elements of European electronic dance music skittering in double-time over steady R&B. If soul music is secularized, sexualized gospel, Discovery is an attempt to see if soul music can survive being plasticized, roboticized, quantized, chopped, and finally, screwed. The album features Rostam and Wes each singing half the songs and guest vocals from Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend) and Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projecters).

    Discovery

Originally released in 2001, Discovery is the second studio album by the French house duo Daft Punk consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. Highlights include the house anthems One More Time and Digital Love as well as the Kanye West sampled Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.

This album has a lot to do with our childhood and the memories of the state we were in at that stage of our lives. It's about our personal relationship to that time. It's less of a tribute to the music from 1975 to 1985 as an era, and more about focusing on the time when we were zero to ten years old. When you're a child you don't judge or analyze music. You just like it because you like it. You're not concerned with whether it's cool or not. Sometimes you might relate to just one thing in a song, such as the guitar sound. This album takes a playful, fun, and colorful look at music. It's about the idea of looking at something with an open mind and not asking too many questions. It's about the true, simple, and honest relationship you have with music when you're open to your own feelings. - Thomas Bangalter

    Home Life

Following his 2010 effort, Moon Deluxe, the rock-and-roll musician Andrew Cedermark spent 2012 putting new songs to tape in an honest-to-goodness rock-and-roll recording studio. Ten of these songs make up his new album, Home Life, which is set in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, and which, loosely, is about growing up only to find that you didn't have to, and the subsequent discovery that the process is irreversible.

American Epic: The Best of The Carter Family

The Carter Family, a family vocal group from Appalachian Virginia, were the most impactful discovery of talent scout Ralph Peer and the first vocal group to become country music stars. Apart from the beautiful harmonies that can only come from kin, Mother Maybelle Carter pioneered "scratch" style guitar picking, a clever synthesis of autoharp, banjo and guitar picking, and for years served as a matriarchal figure in the Grand Ole Opry.

The very first release on the legendary Arhoolie label, from way back in 1960, is also the first for Texas acoustic blues great Mance Lipscomb who was a mere 65 years old at the time of its release. Prior to being discovered by the labels founder, Chris Strachwitz, Lipscomb had spent his life as a sharecropper in his hometown of Navasota, Texas. Lipscombs discovery was one of the greatest by-products of the blues and folk revival of the late 50s and early 60s as this fantastic vinyl reissue of his first album will attest. Classic country-blues from a master.

    Savage Imagination

Dustin Wong and Takako Minekawa are artistic omnivores, soaking up a myriad of cultural artifacts and styles, savoring bits and pieces and recontexutalizing them into entirely delightful and playfully intricate songs. Their songs are embued with a relentless cheerfulness that belies their technicality, steeped in the history of Japanese pop music and exuding the joy of discovery and exploration. Dustin and Takako are serious musicians not afraid to play it silly. Savage Imagination is their second album as a duo and shows their collaboration in full bloom. It is an collection of vibrant pop music, laced with the sounds of video games, radiophonic experiments, and indigenous music from around the world.

    Of Time and Tides

Nick Jonah Davis is a guitarist from Nottingham, England. His early blues rock leanings led to the discovery of prewar blues, as well as modal British folk. Nick steadily absorbed these influences over many years of solitary improvisation. The post-Takoma acoustic guitar solo scene has provided a context for Nick's music, which might otherwise have remained a private endeavour. Live, Nick has shared bills in the U.K. and U.S.A. with the likes of James Blackshaw, Alasdair Roberts, Jozef van Wissem, Max Ochs, Ellen Mary McGee and Eric Carbonara.

Nick first ventured into the studio to record his brief album, Guitar Recordings Vol 1, one of UNCUT/Wild Mercury Sound's Top 100 Albums of 2009. Of Time and Tides is his more expansive second release, featuring evocative solo performances on 6 and 12 string guitar, as well as duets with guitarist Will Phipps and pianist Ed Earl.

    Live In Berlin: 1975

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of Weather Report, the Zawinul estate is proud to release this live document of the supergroups appearance at the 1975 Jazztage Berlin, one of the oldest and most prestigious jazz festivals in Europe. This is the first time that this historic performance has been made available commercially

From the opening strains of Wayne Shorters propulsive Freezing Fire to Joe Zawinuls exotic Badia (a template for the world music movement that would come over a decade later), Live in Berlin, 1975 crackles with an audacious spirit of discovery and daring, underscored by an uncanny sense of group-thinking that allowed the band to be truly in the moment from tune to tune, from bar to bar.

    Adventures In Counter-Culture (Awaiting Repress)

Critically acclaimed emcee/producer and Soul Position frontman Blueprint returns with his highly anticipated sophomore solo release Adventures in Counter-Culture. Experimenting with synths, keyboards and drum machines, Adventures in Counter-Culture touches on Blueprints cynicism with the world, his disdain for pop culture, the state of politics and an apathetic, uninspired society. The album encompasses every facet of music Blueprint knows. It blurs genre lines and connects his hip hop pedigree with his early days in the church choir, to the R&B bands he was a part of in high school, to his new found interest in rock and electronic music. After a five-year musical journey, Blueprint has emerged with his greatest effort to date. A culmination of self discovery and societal critique, Adventures in Counter-Culture is just that.

    A Hard Road (Awaiting Repress)

    Mono Edition

1967s A Hard Road proved to be every bit as powerful and innovative as its predecessor, thanks in large part to Mayalls discovery of Claptons equally brilliant replacement, Peter Green. A one-of-a-kind player with a highly distinctive sound, Green makes his instrumental presence felt throughout A Hard Road, while delivering compelling lead vocals on You Dont Love Me and The Same Way. With sterling support from bassist John McVie and drummer Aynsley Dunbar, the material here features such Mayall originals as Hit the Highway, Leaping Christine and the title track, along with standout interpretations of tunes by Freddie King, Elmore James and Willie Cobbs. The legendarily haunting Green-penned instrumental The Supernatural previews the guitarists groundbreaking work with the original incarnation of Fleetwood Mac, which he and fellow Bluesbreaker John McVie would form a few months later.

Atlanta native Dan Dixon has been a fixture in the independent music scene for years now. After disbanding his well loved band Dropsonic, Dixon started working on an electronic rock project dubbed PLS PLS (pronounced please please). The music conjures heady electronic-laced future rock anthems. Collecting ten stand-out tracks, Dixon put them together for the band's debut release, cleverly titled LP LP.

    Supermodel

Alternative pop-rockers Foster the People have announced their sophomore studio album, "Supermodel." The album will offer 11 songs, all of which were recorded at different places around the world.

As frontman Mark Foster explains, the band recorded the new album in a freewheeling sort of way. "We didn't have any rules," Foster said in a statement. "We just created as much as we could in seven days. And in the spirit of wanderlust and discovery we ended up stumbling on the musical identity of what this record was going to feel like."

"Supermodel" is Foster the People's follow-up to 2011 smash "Torches," which spawned a No. 1 radio hit in the single "Pumped up Kicks."

On December 7, 1999, the then-fledgling Eyeball Records released the debut album by New Jersey band called Thursday. Waiting, in itself, made modest waves during its initial release, but as the band prepared its follow-up-2001's breakthrough Full Collapse-Thursday's debut quickly became more of a herald than an introduction: This is the sound of a band in the middle of a discovery process that would eventually take them to legendary status around the world. Having officially gone out of print when Eyeball ceased operations, Waiting has been unavailable in physical, digital, and streaming formats since 2012. But this year, on the fifteenth anniversary of its release, Collect Records is finally giving this classic album the special deluxe edition reissue package it deserves. Waiting: The 15-Year Anniversary Edition features the original album remastered and repackaged with a die-cut sleeve, original liner notes, and a bonus 7 EP featuring previously unreleased demos from this period-including one never-before-released song.

Backspace Unwind is the long awaited new LAMB album. The sixth album of the electronic music duo contains 10 new songs written by Andy Barlow & Lou Rhodes with 4 featuring string arrangements by Tom Trapp, who also conducted the string section for the recording session at Air Lyndhurst Studios in London.

'Making this album has been a journey of discovery in so many ways', says Lou. 'After making music together over a period of almost 20 years (with a 5 year hiatus to take a breath) it's reassuring that new routes and approaches seem to abound. Over those years I think we've learnt that this journey needs no map; in fact tearing that map up, at every twist and turn, has become our regular gleeful practice.'

    Need Your Light

Need Your Light, the fourth full-length album from Syracuses Ra Ra Riot, is the sound of a bands reinvigoration. Correspondingly, the album sees the band getting back to their house party roots without abandoning the more heady soundscapes they explored with 2013s Beta Love.

The band pulled in producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello) in order to start fleshing out ideas. Shortly afterward a writing trip to Milwaukee, the band soon found themselves crafting Need Your Light with a host of previous collaborators including Ryan Hadlock (who produced 2008s The Rhumb Line) and Andrew Maury (who is a longtime friend, collaborator and live sound engineer also co-produced 2010s The Orchard). Also in the mix is Vamprire Weekends Rostam which despite a long history of working with the band (including the Discovery project) this marks the first time hes actually produced a track (Water and Need Your Light).

The Man Who Fell To Earth OST

Soundtrack to David Bowie's The Man Who Fell to Earth will finally be released. "Due to the recent discovery of lost master tapes," the score will be available 40 years after the film hit theaters.

40 years ago, David Bowie starred in the sci-fi cult classic The Man Who Fell to Earth, which birthed one of his greatest personas: The Thin White Duke. In commemoration of its upcoming anniversary, the film will return to theaters. The film's soundtrack will be released commercially for the very first time.

Bowie originally intended to handle the soundtrack himself, but director Nic Roeg ultimately decided to go in a different direction. Instead, the music was coordinated by The Mamas & the Papas' John Phillips, with contributions from Japanese percussionist-composer Stomu Yamash'ta and former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. Several of the songs Bowie wrote for The Man Who Fell to Earth - including "Subterraneans" - ended up on his 1977 album, Low.

    Music To Draw To: Satellite

Kid Koala's Music To Draw To: Satellite is an uncharted musical journey for the legendary scratch DJ, producer, and composer. Kid Koala's fifth studio album is an expansive work of ambient electronic soundscapes and chilling ballads sung by Icelandic artist Emiliana Torrini. Created during the gelid Montreal winter, its eighteen movements tell a tale of discovery and loss through the lens of lovers separated by an early space mission to Mars. An album of many firsts for Eric San, this inaugural volume in the Music To Draw To series features Kid Koala collaborating with a vocalist, writing lyrical poetry, and producing and performing all instruments. Satellite is the renowned audio-collagist's first non-sample-based record, instead using an array of synthesizers, keys, guitars, strings, turntables, noisemakers and San's inventive recording techniques to lay out this heartrending musical story. The output is in stark, beautiful comparison an ambient masterpiece: over 72 atmospheric minutes of stardust settling over Kid Koala's trove of turntables and sentiment.

    The Elements (Awaiting Repress)

The Elements is an album by American saxophonist Joe Henderson, originally released in 1973 on Milestone.

1970 began a decade of discovery for Joe Henderson; a time to set aside the post-bop instrumentation and repertoire he was identified with and branch out into other realms. One of the most successful and challenging of these efforts that the Milestone label documented was the present four-part improvisation on the basic themes of Fire, Air, Water and Earth.

Assisting the tenor saxophonist was a group of sympathetic explorers--Alice Coltrane on piano and harp, violin original Michael White, bass giant Charlie Haden, and the multifaceted percussionist Kenneth Nash.

Latin American, Indian, and Native American strains enter the mix as Henderson applies the heat and mercurial invention of his more conventional work to these open-ended settings. While the music is enhanced with overdubbing in spots, the true magic of The Elements emanates from the musicians' collective genius at listening and responding to each other.

    Yonkers NY

If a songwriter of some accomplishment who is also a singer predominantly known for his work in country music was looking for a subject for a deeply personal cycle of songs, it's pretty unlikely that Yonkers, New York, a small city bordering on New York City's borough of the Bronx, would be the subject.

Not, of course, unless the writer is Chip Taylor, who grew up there. With Yonkers, NY, Taylor, a veteran songwriter whose songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Peggy Lee, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, the Hollies and, of course, the Troggs (who waxed his first big hit, Wild Thing), has gone back to his childhood and adolescence and come up with eleven songs filled with warmth and humor, enlivened with spoken reminiscences and packaged with a book of lyrics and vintage photos of the people and places that are their subjects. The songs on Yonkers, NY take us into Taylor's family life and into his discovery of music, horses and girls, opening these subjects up with a skill only a master songwriter can summon.

    Angola Prisoners' Blues

In 1959, a young folklorist and musicologist, Harry Oster, traveled to the State Prison in
Angola, Louisiana to collect folksongs. He made a number of field recordings while at the
prison, but his biggest discovery was undoubtedly the Louisiana Blues Hall of Famer, Robert
Pete Williams, a truly gifted musician and blues writer, who was serving a life sentence. Of
the 9 songs on this album, four are by Williams, who sings heart-wrenchingly about prison
life and being down and out. Thanks to Oster, Williams was eventually released from prison,
and was able to have a fairly successful career as a bluesman in the 60s and 70s, appearing
at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival and touring the US and Europe. The other musicians
featured here, fellow inmates Robert Guitar Welch and Matthew Hogman Maxey, are both
extremely gifted musicians, but in the words of Dr. Oster (who would go on to write the
Penguin Guide to American Folklore in 2000), they are primarily the heirs of a clearly
defined and standardized blues tradition, rather than innovators. In any case, this is acoustic
prison blues at its finest, and includes such detailed liner notes as well as an annotated track
listing that it is equal parts musical and historical document.
