    A Decade Of Dio: 1983-1993 (Pre-Order)

Follow Dio through the band's early years with A DECADE OF DIO: 1983-1993, a new box set that brings together their first six studio albums, each featuring newly remastered sound.

    It includes:

    Holy Diver (1983)

    The Last In Line (1984)

    Sacred Heart (1985)

    Dream Evil (1987)

    Lock Up The Wolves (1990)

    Strange Highways (1993)

This 6LP + 7 vinyl single set will come housed in a box featuring new artwork by Marc Sasso, who was responsible for many of the band's iconic covers.

On the first side of the 7 single is the 1983 version of Evil Eyes, which was originally released as the b-side on the Holy Diver single. In addition, this version is different from the one featured on the 1984 album The Last In Line. The flip side features Time To Burn, which was the only studio track featured on the otherwise live release, Intermission (1986).

Ronnie James Dio's sinister howl and wicked songcraft bewitched hard rock fans in the Seventies and Eighties during his memorable stints with Elf, Rainbow, and Black Sabbath. In 1983, the singer formed his own band, launching a successful solo career that led to 10 studio albums and sales of more than 10 million records around the world.

After two albums with Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio left in 1982 and formed Dio with fellow Sabbath band mate Vinny Appice on drums. The group's platinum-selling debut Holy Diver arrived in 1983 and is now revered as a heavy metal masterpiece, including two songs that would become rock signatures: the title track and the epic Rainbow In The Dark.

The band returned the following year with The Last In Line (1984), which became the band s second platinum seller and included the single Mystery, as well as We Rock, a song the band often used to close its shows. Sacred Heart (1985) achieved gold certification and introduced fans to the concert staple Rock n Roll Children. Dio s fourth studio album, Dream Evil (1987) included the singles All The Fools Sailed Away and I Could Have Been A Dreamer.

In the Nineties, the group released two more stellar studio albums. Lock Up The Wolves arrived in 1990 and featured the single Hey Angel and rocking title track. Following a brief reunion with Black Sabbath in 1992, Dio returned with Strange Highways in 1993. The album featured future fan favorites like Jesus, Mary and The Holy Ghost, Evilution, and the title track.

Although Ronnie James Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer in 2010, his towering voice and legacy live on. The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, co-founded by Wendy Dio, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable fund dedicated to supporting cancer-prevention research, raising awareness and educating the public about the vital importance of early detection and prevention when dealing with this deadly disease.

    The Devil You Know

When metal masters Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice reunited for the first time in 15 years to record new bonus tracks for Rhinos 2007 compilation Black Sabbath: The Dio Years, an otherworldly force reignited their musical connection. Everyone had so much fun playing together that we didn't want it to end, the band recalls. It didnt, they reformed as Heaven & Hell, named for the classic 1980 LP that was the lineups debut as Sabbath, and staged a triumphant, sold-out world tour throughout 2007-2008. Fueled by their chemistry on the road, the quartet returned to the studio in 2008 to record The Devil You Know, their first new set of original material since 1992s Dehumanizer. We wound up writing and recording an album that stands up to anything we've ever done, says the legendary band. We're really proud of the music and excited for people to hear it.

Dio, Iommi, Butler, and Appice were formerly the Black Sabbath lineup behind the classic albums Heaven And Hell ('80), Mob Rules ('81), Live Evil ('82) and Dehumanizer ('92), all newly reissued.

Holy Diver is the debut album from American heavy metal band Dio. Released on May 25, 1983, the album has been hailed by critics as Dio's best work and a classic staple in the heavy metal genre. Due to his stints in Rainbow, Black Sabbath and as a solo artist, Dio is one of the few people in the history of music that can honestly say they have played on three classic albums, each under a different moniker.

    Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow

Group's 1975 Debut Includes Signature Man on a Silver Mountain and Heralds Beginning of Powerful Combination of Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio

Wax Cathedral Reissue Comes Replete With Faithful Replication of Original Gatefold Sleeve; Pressed at RTI, America's Best Record Plant

In 1974, Ritchie Blackmore's bandmates in Deep Purple refused his request to cut a cover of Quatermass' Black Sheep of the Family. Demonstrating impressive commitment to the song, Blackmore set out to record it with the help of then-emerging vocalist Ronnie James Dio and members of his band Elf. To have enough material to release this as a single, Blackmore and Dio collaborated on Sixteenth Century Greensleeves. Pleased with the results, the two fleshed out a full album and Blackmore formally parted ways with Deep Purple. Blackmore and Dio named their new band after the location where they initially discussed their collaboration: the legendary Rainbow Bar and Grill on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Rainbow was born.

Drawing on medieval classical progressions for inspiration, Blackmore paired textured playing paired with Dio's fantastical lyrical imagery and inimitable vocals. The combination set Rainbow apart from its hard rock contemporaries. Featuring what would prove to be Rainbow's signature tune, Man on the Silver Mountain, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is a dynamic voyage. Blackmore's somber, melodic playing weaves a mystical tapestry over which Dio's tales of drawbridges, crossbows, and kings settle like a knight on his steed. This influential classic concludes with a flourish, as a cover of the Yardbirds' Gregorian chant-influenced instrumental Still I'm Sad proves a perfect pulpit for Blackmore's rhapsody-like soloing.

Complete with a faithful replication of the original gatefold sleeve and featuring dead-quiet surfaces, this Wax Cathedral reissue is pressed at RTI, America's best record plant. Even better, it's on colored vinyl.

    The Ballads IV

Axel Rudi Pell in his own words:

Another 7 years passed by after the release of the "The Ballads III". Seven years of writing, recording and collecting even more emotional and melancholic songs. To keep our tradition, we decided to record 3 brand new tracks for this ballad compilation. Here is a short introduction to every new song in the specific running order:

    1) WHERE THE WILD WATERS FLOW - My own composition in the true ARP ballad style.

    2) HOLY DIVER - As everybody knows, my soul mate and friend Ronnie James Dio sadly passed away last year. It was very clear to me using one of his songs to pay him tribute. Of course the original track isn't a ballad, so I decided to re-arrange the song completely and we made a Piano version out of it, featuring some Orchestra - strings, a Cello and a clean and melodic guitar solo

    3) HALLELUJAH - One of the best ballads around. Originally written and released by Leonard Cohen in 1984, it wasn't his version giving me the idea to cover this tune. Actually it was all the good and bad performances of some TV casting show participants, who gave me the real kick to create one of the,
hopefully, ultimate versions of this song.
    1. Where The Wild Waters Flow (New Song)
    2. Holy Diver (New Song)
    3. Hallelujah (New Song)
    4. Northern Lights
    5. Noblesse Oblige (Opus #5 Adagio Contabile)

    7. Glory Night
    8. In The Air Tonight
    9. Touching My Soul
    10. Like A Child Again
    11. No Chance To Live

    Rising

    Red Colored Vinyl

    Pressed at RTI

Initially perceived as a Ritchie Blackmore solo project, Rainbow had become a permanent fixture in the British rock atmosphere by the time the band was ready to follow-up its breakthrough debut. For Rising, Blackmore had replenished Rainbow with a colorful arsenal of accomplished sidemen and studio musicians; keyboardist Tony Carey, bassist Jimmy
Bain and drummer Cozy Powell. But the main event here is Ronnie James Dio, who establishes himself as one of heavy metal's most influential vocalists.

The presence of the new lineup is immediately felt. The keyboard intro to "Tarot Woman" sets a sorcerous tone for the album. Carey's dexterous playing paired with Powell's thunderous drumming provides a cavernous sonic template for Blackmore chugging riffs and sparking leads. Dio's lyrical trademarks are all here: tales of wizards, magic and kings, as well as foreboding of the darkness that lurks ahead. The epic "Stargazer," which features a 42-piece orchestra, and the equally ambitious, nine-minute "A Light In the Black"-an indisputably thrilling one-two punch-close out the album.

Rising announced Rainbow's arrival as a new voice in metal, establishing many elements that would shape the genre for decades to come. Complete with a faithful replication of the original gatefold sleeve and dead-quiet surfaces, this Wax Cathedral reissue is pressed at RTI, America's best record plant. On Stage

    Green Colored Vinyl

    Pressed At RTI

"I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore. We must be over the rainbow!" The famous Wizard of Oz introduction sets the
mood for the thrills, imagination, and aural adventurous that is Rainbow's classic double live album On Stage. Recorded in late
1976, approximately one year before front man Ronnie James Dio's departure from the band, the set stands as one of the decade's
pivotal concert records. On par with Kiss' Alive, UFO's Strangers in the Night, and Deep Purple's Made In Japan, the effort teems
with blistering performances and unfettered energy.

Freed from the confines of the studio, Dio and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore instill passionate bravado and swagger to every
song they attack. At the peak of his powers, Dio sings with leather-lunged gusto and theatrical purpose, hitting seemingly
impossible highs and reaching down to bring dark overtones to the lows. His melancholic showing on a cover of Deep Purple's
"Mistreated" blows away the original. As a perfect foil, Blackmore takes the opportunity to stretch out solos and indulge in bluesy
improvisations, turning "Man on the Silver Mountain" into a multi-part medley and the slowly building, fantasy-themed "Catch
the Rainbow" into an epic workout.

Rainbow's rhythm section is equally inspired. Drummer Cozy Powell jump-starts high-voltage passages with urgent beats and
timely playing. In sync with the irreplaceable contributions of organist/keyboardist Tony Carey, bassist Jimmy Bain supplies a taut
foundation. On Stage is in effect a document of a vital hard-rock band pushing itself to the maximum and succeeding in taking its
audiences on an unforgettable journey. Blackmore's inventive passages and colorful tones are alone worth the price of admission.

Martin Birch's steady, lively production puts it over the top. Unlike many heavily edited albums from the era, Powell is heard front
and center, the drums given as much space and presence as Blackmore's humming guitar, Dio's inimitable singing, and Carey's
howling organ. You're given an invitation to stand onstage with the quintet.

Pressed on green-colored vinyl at RTI, America's best pressing plant, and presented in a faithful reproduction of the original
gatefold sleeve, Wax Cathedral's deluxe reissue of this live scorcher renders the music in the highest fidelity it's ever enjoyed.
Always meant to be heard since its original release in 1977, On Stage is restored to all its glory.

The Pharmacy's sound is hard to nail down: having been together for over a decade, the band has released countless singles, EPs, and full-lengths that range from basement power punk to lo-fi, psych-tinged garage rock. Due out August 12th on Old Flame Records, much of Spells was written in a cabin in Big Sur, informed by the rocky beaches and the fog rolling in from the Pacific. It was recorded in the basement of a used car museum in downtown Tacoma, with every track laid down live by Kyle Brunette, producer of Night Beats' S/T and Sonic Bloom LPs. Picking up where Stoned & Alone left off, Spells feels even more stripped-down and vulnerable, as if the members of The Pharmacy have allowed listeners an exclusive sneak peek into their collective brain.

    Thank You Les

    Numbered, limited edition

This album from guitarist Lou Pallo pays tribute to his late friend and bandmate Les Paul. Titled Thank You Les: A Tribute to Les Paul, the 21-track disc covers a range of styles pop, jazz, country, rock and blues, all tastefully. Pallo sweetened the proceedings by including the contributions of a host of star-studded guitar talent, including Keith Richards, Steve Miller (who wrote the resonant liner notes), Billy Gibbons, Jose Feliciano, Slash, Johnny A, Bucky Pizzarelli, Arlen Roth, Nokie Edwards, Frank Vignola, Bob Leive, Tommy Doyle and Jon Paris. Other artists lending a hand are singers Eddie Brigati, Jr., Blondie Chaplin, Nicki Parrott, Lexie Roth, Melinda Doolittle and members of the Les Paul Trio.

'Les was my guitar idol, and I was honored to work beside him and call him my friend for so many years,' Pallo says. This tribute allows Les' musicianship and sense of humor to take center stage giving everyone the opportunity to experience the Les Paul we knew well and the music he adored.

The songs on the album include many of Paul's favorites, along with others from the Great American Songbook. The musical thread that runs throughout the album is the relationship between Les Paul and his longtime friend and rhythm guitarist Lou Pallo, who many credit with helping Paul revitalize his career as a live performer after they first met in 1963 and soon after began performing together.

From the album's opening track a briskly swinging version of 'Avalon,' featuring the fleet and nifty fretwork of Frank Vignola to the closing cover of 'Over the Rainbow,' it's hard to imagine a more gracious host for all involved than Pallo and the rest of the Les Paul Trio. No one ever overplays their hand or dabbles in self-indulgence. Throughout there seems to be a real sense of camaraderie, all of it originating in love and admiration for Paul. Tribute records of this sort are often thrown-together, so-so affairs, but this one is altogether lovely and inspired. Jazziz Magazine

    ---

This loving tribute to Les Paul featuring longtime trio cohort Lou Pallo and others with whom Les played at Fat Tuesdays and the Iridium is musically fabulous assuming you like the timeless old school style. And if not, why not? If it's good enough for Keith Richards, Steve Miller, Billy F. Gibbons and Slash, among others who perform here in that style, well hell, then it's good enough for you!
No doubt Les's playing and his technological innovations with guitar and multi-tracked overdubbing affected all of them. But surely his playing hit them more squarely in their young guitarists' wheelhouses.

The production was all-analog on vintage tube gear that warmed up the CD reviewed here a few months ago, but on vinyl? OMG! Anyone who thinks CDs are transparent to the source will surely change their minds hearing this AA recording in its most pure AAA state (though Slash's and Billy F. Gibbon's parts were recorded elsewhere and probably phoned in digitally and added to the final mix) compared to the CD version, though the CD has 21 songs, compared to the LPs 12 (maybe a volume 2 if this sells well enough?). There simply wasn't room for it all.

The concept was simple: pay tribute to Les by having his friends and fans play and sing songs-mostly standards- that he played in concert, along with some that he made famous on record, some with Mary Ford, and probably some that were just of that particular musical time when Les's commercial popularity peaked.

Contributing guitar and vocals are Steve Miller (who was Les Paul's godson as he relates in a pungent liner note story), the aforementioned Gibbons, Slash and Keith Richards (on It's Been a Long, Long Time), JosÉ Feliciano, Blondie Chaplin, and Jersey boys guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and Rascal Eddie Brigati, Jr.. The performances by artists you're less likely to know, including those who regularly played with Les, are no less notable as you'll discover if you purchase this superb sounding slab of vinyl.

There are no lowlights, but one of the highlights is the rich, reverberant recording. You'll sink your ears into it within seconds of the opener Avalon (not the Roxy Music song!) featuring guitarist Frank Vignola. It's almost unfair to single out any one track among the twelve tunes, but for me, Steve Miller's take on Nature Boy was particularly elegant. Nothing beats people singing and playing live together minus auto-tune. On the vinyl more so than on the CD, Vaya Con Dios-a song long associated with the late Mary Ford- eerily channels Les's former spouse and musical partner, courtesy Arlen Roth and daughter Lexie.

I've played the CD version dozens of times and thought I'd explored and absorbed the recording's every nook and cranny, but the first play on vinyl was revelatory-an eerily transparent you are in the studio with the musicians experience. Instrumental textures and fingers on frets touches are reproduced with sensational realism. If you are fortunate enough to own any of Les and Mary's rich, warm melt in your ears later Columbia 6 eye recordings like Warm and Wonderful (CS 8488), Swingin' South!! (CS 8728) or Lover's Luau (CS 8086), I think you'll agree that this modern recording gets so sonically close to those, it's scary! I wasn't sure that was any longer possible.

Great performances, particularly out-of-their-comfort-zone ones from rockers, a stellar recording and a warm, warm feeling you'll get every play of this heartfelt tribute album make it so easy to recommend.

A few weeks ago I was privileged to be invited by the producer to attend a vinyl release party at New York's The Cutting Room club.

Pre-concert, the club ran the video that's included in the deluxe CD/DVD edition, showing the making of the album. Then Lou Pallo took the stage and the live tribute began. At one point Lou played a touching and somewhat eerie duet with a video of Les. Many of the players on the album performed with Anton Fig sitting in on drums.

Though there were some predictable no shows like Slash, Billy F Gibbons, Keef and JosÉ Feliciano, Eddie Brigati was in the house and he brought along Rascal guitarist Gene Cornish for a great live version of How Can I Be Sure along with I'm Confessin' That I Love You, the song he contributes to the album.

One of the set's highlights was Blondie Chaplin's reprise of the album closer Smile. After prefacing the performance by relating that a dear friend had just passed away, he sang the song with a depth of feeling that was both heartbreaking and brave. The show had its comedic vaudeville moments too, courtesy Bob Leive, a talented trumpeter and clown.

This, numbered, limited edition vinyl version, mastered by Alex DeTurk at Masterdisk and pressed at Pallas is highly recommended!

Official live album release in conjunction with The Fall. Smith himself was in fine form, prowling around the stage snarling lyrics into the mic and messing around with his band mates' amps . The biggest stormer of the evening was I Am Damo Suzuki. In general, the set got faster, louder, and generally more towards the end. It was during Mr. Pharmacist that the energy really started picking up.

Prior to becoming a tight knit four piece, North Carolina's Gross Ghost went through various incarnations. Over the first five years, a free flowing and seemingly ever changing cast of characters passed through the band's practice room.
