Ire Works (Colored Vinyl) (Awaiting Repress)

    Limited Edition Electric Blue Vinyl

Ire Works succeeds in many of the same ways that their previous album did, while branching out creatively. They continue to toy with technical metal, blistering hardcore, jazz breaks, and post-punk, but here they evolve again by adding more twists and turns with additional electronic elements. While the merging of too many styles in hardcore can make for a convoluted result (see Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled release), the added instruments and genre changeups enhance the result rather than acting as ornamental distractions.

Edgy Aphex Twin-style drill'n'bass drum breaks and stretched and squeezed electro blips feel strangely at home next to the psychotic time-signature changes and manic riffs, especially on the tracks Sick on Sunday, Dead as History, and When Acting as a Wave. Violins, pianos, and trumpets sit nicely in the mix, and the group's willingness to take chances leads to stunning artistic endeavors rather than stale attempts at crossing genres just for the sake of being clever. Original vocalist Dimitri Minakakis makes an appearance, as does Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds, but the most notable inclusion is drummer Gil Sharone, who proves himself an expert at picking up the slack after the departure of founding member Chris Pennie to play in Coheed and Cambria.

Undoubtedly, this act added anger to fuel the fire of their heavier numbers. 82588, Fix Your Face, and Party Smasher are as wicked and manic as their most difficult earlier stuff; conversely, the melodic hooks and falsetto of Black Bubblegum and the watery ambience of Mouth of Ghosts balance out the album nicely. It can be inaccessible and terrifying all at once, but in a genre overly saturated with formulaic groups, Ire Works is a true standout. If DEP aren't careful and continue down this innovative path, they could easily be labeled the Radiohead of metalcore- a visceral metal album that pushes the envelope.

    Dissociation

Experimental metal outfit the Dillinger Escape Plan have announced a new album, Dissociation, out via Party Smashers Inc./Cooking Vinyl America. Among the producers who worked on the album was Converge's Kurt Ballou, who mixed it at GodCity in Boston. Along with the announcement, the band have shared the record's first single, "Limerent Death." In a press release, guitarist Ben Weinman called the track one of his "all-time favorite DEP songs."

In the same press release, the band - which formed in 1997 - announced that Dissociation is "potentially" their last release before they go on an "extended hiatus" when they finish touring. In a new interview with Noisey, Weinman (who is an original member of the band) elaborated on the decision. He said, "I think in some ways we wanted to pull a 'Seinfeld' and go out while we're still on top."

Option Paralysis (Red Vinyl) (Awaiting Repress)

    Pressed On Red Vinyl

    Limited Edition of 500 Copies

Printed Dust Sleeve & Vinyl-Only Bonus Track

At first glance, "Option Paralysis" seems like a highly inappropriate title to describe the constantly evolving output of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN. But once you're faced with the cumulative power and vision of guitarist Ben Weinman, vocalist Greg Puciato, bassist Liam Wilson, guitarist Jeff Tuttle and new drummer Billy Rymer, you'll wonder-right after you pick yourself up off the floor-why more bands don't achieve similar force-of-nature status.

"The title 'Option Paralysis' represents being in a situation where you have so many choices you can't decide, and end up being frozen," says founding member Weinman about the mindset permeating the band's fourth full-length album. "Back in the early days when I started to discover music, go to shows and find out about new bands, there were 'filters' from various circumstances - geography, economic status, etc - which deeply affected how a band sounded and what they stood for. Now, everyone is going through the same filter-namely computers and the internet-and everyone has the same circumstances: Everybody's seeing the same thing for the first time at the very same time, simultaneously all over the world. That very system is negatively affecting art and has created a situation where everything is influencing itself and art is not based on struggle, personal scarcity or unique and personal inspiration. This cultural revolutions is a big part of what determines our mission. We're not listening to any of the bands around us for some kind of input as to what we should sound like. At this point, we're using our own accomplishments as a measurement of what we need to do next."

From their early days in the late-'90s as short-haired Rutgers, New Jersey, college students delivering hyper-complex thrash to audiences of boorish long-haired surly metalheads, to performing with NINE INCH NAILS on the pioneering electronic band's farewell shows, the DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN have merely one prerogative: to go forward in ALL directions simultaneously. Their groundbreaking 1999 debut full-length, "Calculating Infinity", is inarguably the essential technical-metal talisman for the 21st century, melding hardcore's blinding rage with a musical vision that made most progressive-rock bands sound positively lazy by comparison. "Irony Is A Dead Scene", the band's 2002 collaboration with Mike Patton, maintained their patented extremity while exploring electronic textures. The 2004 follow-up, "Miss Machine", (the first record to showcase frontman, Puciato) was a distillation of the band's work thus far, while including jaw-dropping flirtations with mainstream metal ("Unretrofied") that further enforced DILLINGER's desire-and ability-to take their music wherever the hell they wanted. 2007's "Ire Works" had the band finding inspiration from underground glitch and breakcore electronica, as well as indigenous music genres, in a world seemingly overrun with metalcore bores and screamo trend-hoppers. THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN's unerring sweat equity has consistently found resonance with listeners on both sides of the stages the band trod upon.

"Option Paralysis" marks the beginning of another trajectory in the DEP mythology. After aligning themselves with the renowned Relapse label for most of their career, the band entered into a deal with the French label SEASON OF MIST to put out "Option Paralysis", tagging their new PARTY SMASHER INC label. "We signed a pretty traditional record deal with them for one record," explains Weinman. "What's exciting is that Michael [Berberian, SOM label founder] is a really big music fan and has a great understanding of how we operate. He was totally aware of the possibilities and limitations of working with a band like us-he's not expecting pop hits-and he's been extremely enthusiastic to dive right in and make it work for everyone."

Produced by Steve Evetts, Dillinger's new music is positively abundant with possibilities. Drummer Billy Rymer, whom Weinman describes as "young and hungry," now occupies the engine room that powers the band. Frontman, Puciato has always had a knack with a bellow that could make reciting a grocery list seem like an exhortation to open the mouth of Hell. But feeling some of the lyrics on "Option Paralysis", you can't positively determine if the singer is handing down indictments ("Farewell, Mona Lisa") or feeling emotionally wounded. "This record is concept driven but there is still a very emotional and personal aspect to his lyrics," says Weinman soberly. "He's going through transitional stages in his life right now." Nothing so eloquently supports that statement than the six and-a-half-minute "Widower", where the band are joined by veteran David Bowie keyboardist Mike Garson for an aural excursion that incorporates piano-trio jazz, tender balladry and anthemic power. While there's no shortage of DEP plasma-balls on "Option Paralysis" ("Room Full Of Eyes", "Good Neighbor"), the band keep things fresh with the math-rock/free-jazz convergence of "I Wouldn't If You Didn't," the electro-tweaked "Chinese Whispers" and the closing "Parasitic Twins". The latter track sports lead vocals courtesy of guitarist Tuttle, as well as Beach Boys-styled harmonies and a major-key Weinman solo that's more Clapton (ca. Derek And The Dominos) than calculus crush. Clearly, this is not your older brother's DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN. "We're just trying to make music we can be stimulated by," says Weinman about the assorted directions and sonic vistas on "Option Paralysis". "We consider ourselves songwriters, which is kind of odd when you consider the kind of band most would consider us."

As passionate about their craft as ever, DEP are looking to ramp up things even more in 2010, with a planet-beating touring campaign that includes basement shows, a stint on the main stage at this summer's Vans Warped Tour, a performance at the legendary Cochella festival, and various points in between. But after 12 years of deliberately challenging themselves, as well as the preconceived notions of critics and the strict genre-specific zealots of the world's underground music scenes, the big question remains: What is the mission of the DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN? It's a question Weinman addresses with equal parts melancholy, unwavering determination and humor. "I've been trying for a while to have someone explain that to me," he says, laughing. "Seriously, 'Option Paralysis' represents why we're here and why we're still making music. We started at a time when there wasn't all this access to the larger world. Our only goal was to make a small dent in the scene that we were in. The fact we've made it this far and that we're still relevant is really special to me. I feel that it is extremely important for bands like us to continue to represent the ethic and attitude that was present during a time that doesn't exist anymore."

"That," he says, pausing to smile. "And I have to pay my mortgage somehow "

    Daughters (Awaiting Repress)

This isn't technically Daughters' final album, but after recording, half the band quit, and whatever the remaining members (vocalist Alexis Marshall and drummer Jonathan Syverson) come up with in the future probably won't sound much like this. In a February 2010 interview with Noisecreep.com, Marshall all but says so while discussing the new album: [Former guitarist] Nick [Sadler] wrote a lot of the stuff on there, and he was really looking to make it accessible, and see how it fared... There are definitely parts of the record that were written to see how people will respond, which is kind of disappointing.

If Sadler's name sounds familiar, it's probably from the decidedly non-Daughters-like charms of his other group, Fang Island. While he's not officially credited as a songwriter-- the songs on Daughters are attributed to the entire group-- Sadler is listed as a co-producer, which might explain the album's relatively less abrasive sound. Relative to other Daughters records, at least: Those hoping for the abrupt spasms from the group's 11-minute debut, or the slightly less abstract math essayed on Hell Songs, are going to be sorely disappointed when they drop the needle on The Virgin. Most of the song's elements-- the frantic double-timed drumming, the insect-like chatter of the guitars-- are familiar from older Daughters' tracks. Its verse-chorus structure, on the other hand, isn't. And neither is Marshall's vocal transformation into a smooth and confident David Yow impersonator. Even the song titles are streamlined. While these moves might seem like capitulations of some sort, the band doesn't pull any punches because of them.

In fact, this refinement actually serves to focus Daughters' energies. There's still room for flashes of the manic fretwork and double-bass drum damage of old in tracks like the thick and brutal The Dead Singer, or Our Queens, a song that's equal parts fractured mathcore and fist-pumping punk anthem. That said, pummeling hook-filled songs like the The Hit or Sweet Georgia Brown are the new norm. The moves made here are no different than the recent pop moves made by equally uncompromising bands like the Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, and Torche-- each of those bands still sound like themselves, but they're also open to change and wholly willing to evolve into something else, fan backlash be damned. It's just a shame Daughters couldn't survive this transformation. As I said earlier, hardcore Daughters lovers will probably have plenty of bones to pick with this album. For everyone else, Daughters is a feast to be savored.

After a seemingly infinite absence, the Dillinger Four delivers their long-promised fourth proper full-length, Civil War. The release marks the end of an agonizing 6 year span that fans have endured since the last D4 studio album and allays the speculation and rumors that have plagued the band for years. The Dillinger Four prove that they haven't lost a step here as Civil War is littered with irresistible hooks, a raw sound and accented by dueling lead vocals peppered with sharp lyrical witicisms.

Miss Machine (Colored Vinyl) (Awaiting Repress)

Limited Edition Coke Bottle Green Vinyl

New vocalist Greg Puciato begins on Van Damsel, It's not what you thought as it runs a dead stop. A thousand bands would've quit at ...what you thought; Dillinger adds runs a dead stop, and makes you leap out of the way of its hardcore car crashing into the jazz establishment. No kidding! After five years, the band has lost nothing, only gained. Time signatures are a play toy, genres are a joke, and the wannabes' goofy I'm so tortured, listen to me scream is nowhere to be found. Here, jarring instrumental changes work as a bitches' brew of stealthy genius, sticking you with a shiv and changing faces in the dark.

Technical metal, righteous hardcore, twittering jazz interludes, and starkly melodic, seemingly post-punk-inspired segments all put the punters soundly in their place. Miss Machine doesn't even really seem that angry. Well, not anger for anger's sake, anyway. Cuts like Panasonic Youth and We Are the Storm are fueled by a manic alchemy of metal and hardcore, and Puciato's veins couldn't have survived the sessions. But the rage is artful; it's an integral part of Dillinger's larger performance. In the near future, rich women and fuddy-duddies will consider Miss Machine through opera glasses as sweaty children lash each other with cat-o'-nine-tails. There's nothing more to say -- the next true image of rock & roll has crawled out of the swamps of Jersey.

    Calculating Infinity

Apparently, Dillinger has solved the complex equation asked of their album title and the answer is strange and complex. Oddly enough, Relapse is marketing this as math metal, a term that almost fits. Having enjoyed Dillinger's bombastic, grindy punk debut mini-album, Calculating Infinity seems ten times more explosive and brilliant, as it spews forth anger and venomous misery in a way that is comparable only to spontaneous combustion. Continuing to expand upon the ultra-aggressive, deliciously technical approach they adopt toward grind and hardcore, the band has fully embraced its amazing knack for rhythmic melody on tracks like *# and Weekend Sex Change. Fear not Dillinger fans, for there is enough uncontrolled hatred and violence on this release to satisfy five bands, let alone New Jersey's native sons.

This album is both screechingly abrasive, as evident on Clip the Apex... Accept Institution, and morbidly beautiful, with the Slint-ish acoustic passages of The Running Board. Destro's Secret contains such an amazing progressive dance between guitar and bass that one could only compare it to the mighty Cynic. The drumming rates near the top of any extreme metal drumming, combining an offbeat jazz style with an aggressive Cryptopsy-like technical approach. The vocals are raw, disturbing, and creepy causing a strange chill to crawl up the spine. Who will appreciate Dillinger then? The eclectics and musicians who understand the complexity of the band and genius chaotically held within.

    New Junk Aesthetic

Every Time I Die is a Southern hardcore rock band from Buffalo, New York, founded in the winter of 1998. Across a series of five albums, they have defined a scene, with their unique blend of metalcore, punk and southern rock. Now with their debut album on Epitaph, New Junk Aesthetic, Every Time I Die return to the sound that made earlier albums like Hot Damn fan favorites. We know that our older stuff, which was a lot faster and a lot heavier, definitely made our live shows a lot more fun, because everyone was moving and singing along, says frontman Keith Buckley. We're kinda going back to the way we started.

Produced by Steve Evetts (He Is Legend, A Static Lullaby, Dillinger Escape Plan, Saves the Day, Lifetime, Story of the Year). Features guest vocals by Matt Caughthran of the Bronx and Greg Puciat of Dillinger Escape Plan.

The Sound Doctor: Black Ark Singles And Dub Plates

'The Sound Doctor' is a 24 track set and follows 'High Plains Drifter' put out in mid February, and documents Lee Perry's recordings of the dreads, rastas and sufferers in 70's Kingston.

The album collects remastered and previously unavailable Lee Perry productions of artists such as Junior Byles, U-Roy, Dillinger and The Ethiopians as well as more obscure performers, including Brother Roy and Jah T.

The tracks were recorded in three different Kingston Studios - Dynamic, Randy's and Lee Perry's own Black Ark - with some of the finest musicians, and amongst them were Sly & Robbie, Augustus Pablo, Winston Wright, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Bobby Ellis and Theophilius Beckford.

Arguably one of the most groundbreaking and influential bands in the metal realm, ATHEIST combined a death metal attack with virtuosic level of playing. This union would create a style of forward thinking, progressive metal that would soon become the benchmark for many influential metal bands (DEATH, CYNIC, PESTILENCE, etc.).

ATHEIST's sophomore record, 'Unquestionable Presence,' is what metal legend is made of. Written in large part by deceased bassist Roger Patterson, Unquestionable Presence is classic heavy metal interwoven with jazz and a highly articulated melodic sense to create music of timeless brilliance. Upon its initial release it emerged as the most important technical metal record of its time, and to this day remains a crucial yardstick by which daring, ambitious, and progressive metal records are measured.

    Let's Get Metaphysical

Described by the NME as sounding like 'Weezer being beaten up by The Dillinger Escape Plan', Carnivores draw influence from Fugazi, At The Drive-In, Idlewild, Helmet, Elvis Costello and Nirvana. Carnivores are a three-piece rock band based in Paisley, Scotland. Formed in the late 2000's they got to work the old fashioned way, touring the toilet venues of Scotland in a battered estate car building a fan-base show by show. They quickly gained a reputation as one of the craziest live bands in Scotland. Carnivores are: Kenny Leckie (vocals / guitar), Grant M (bass/vocals) and Martin Johnston (drums/backing vocals). Their debut album 'Let's Get Metaphysical'. Recorded live in just six days with producer Bruce Rintoul (Twin Atlantic/Fatherson), the album captures the raw intensity of the band's live show matched with a more melodic, introspective aspect to Carnivores sound.

    Oppression

Incite ignite heavy metal once more with their fourth full-length album and highly anticipated metal record for 2016 Oppression [minus HEAD Records]. Since the release of their full-length-debut The Slaughter in 2009, the Phoenix, AZ quartet has shared stages with everyone from Dillinger Escape Plan, Cancer Bats, and 36 Crazyfists to Crowbar, Soulfly, and Cavalera Conspiracy in addition to headlining countless gigs.

Over the course of two more explosive offerings, All Out War [2012] and Up In Hell [2014], they've earned acclaim from Kerrang!, ARTISTdirect, and many others as well as "Album of the Week" honors from Revolver. Songs such as "Army of Darkness" charted Top 40 on the SiriusXM metal charts. However, 2016 sees the band evolve into a more brutal and brash beast ready to claw its way to the genre's upper echelon one show at a time.

    You Can't Stop Me

Many of the greatest works of art throughout history were
fashioned from grief, anger and overwhelming despair descending on its creators in the aftermath of tragedy and SUICIDE SILENCE's appropriately titled You Can't Stop Me is no exception. Plenty of bands trumpet the idea of strength through adversity, but few have lived it like this one.
Like the once unthinkable creative and commercial reemergence of ALICE IN CHAINS or the classic, legendary and timeless touchstone that is AC/DC's Back in Black, Suicide Silence's fourth album features a new frontman on the heels of earthshaking tragedy. You Can't Stop Me serves as a simultaneous introduction to vocalist Hernan "Eddie" Hermida, as well as a celebration of the brotherhood the band shared with Hermida's fallen predecessor. The group chose the album's title from a collection of lyrics left behind by the late Mitch Lucker, while their formidable revamped sound makes it clear that Suicide Silence's resurrection is complete. Ever since Suicide Silence went public with their plans to continue as a band, they've put all of the emotions from the last two years into these songs. "Inherit the Crown" name checks The Black Crown, as Hermida demands the chance to honor his friend's legacy and carve out a place of his own.

Mark Heylmun and Chris Garza (guitars), Dan Kenny (bass) and Alex Lopez (drums) sound more driven than ever, force-feeding their mashup of death metal, black metal, grind and time-signature bending dissonance into structured, focused and often groove-oriented missives of anger and perseverance. Just as the surviving members of JOY DIVISION were able to remake themselves as NEW ORDER, and as a post-plane crash LYNYRD SKYNYRD was reborn with Johnny Van Zant stepping in for his late brother, You Can't Stop Me is equal parts mournful tribute and statement of renewed purpose.

Death metal legend George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher (CANNIBAL CORPSE) and Greg Puciato (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, KILLER BE KILLED) make guest appearances, but make no mistake: Suicide Silence is as bonded, as cohesive, as ever. You Can't Stop Me was produced and mixed by Steve Evetts (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, GLASSJAW, SEPULTURA), the band's longtime friend and collaborator. Evetts was set to begin working with Lucker on new material just days after the singer's passing.
Most bands will declare their most recent album the "best" they've ever done. Suicide Silence have declared You Can't Stop Me as their most impassioned, most committed, and most important release thus far. It's a record they fought, bled, sweated and even cried to make happen.
If a rising heavy metal band can overcome a tragedy this triumphantly, this definitively, this absolutely, then surely there's hope for us all.

This union would create a style of forward thinking, progressive metal that would soon become the benchmark for many influential metal bands (DEATH, CYNIC, PESTILENCE, etc.).

'Elements' was once the final chapter in the story of a band many years ahead of its time. Its complex arrangements fused disparate sounds such as delicate jazz, deep funk grooves, latin rhythms, flamenco guitar stylings, and samba interludes with blistering metal chops to create music that confused as many as it pleased. Once a fitting swansong for the unique entity that ATHEIST had become, 'Elements' was almost equally regaled and reviled for the ambitious ideas it put into motion. In the years since the band split Elements has been recognized as a crucial piece of ATHEIST history and a marker for the wider acceptance for heavy, dynamic, progressive metal.

'Piece of Time' is the classic debut that brought ATHEIST to the front of the international metal scene's collective conscience. Almost six years in the making, Piece of Time combines the bands death metal roots and youthful exuberance with their growing pension for technical composition and performance. Instant classics such as On They Slay, I Deny, and the title track are ever bit as visceral and urgent now as they were upon release. 'Piece of Time' captures ATHEIST in its formative years, perched on the precipice of greatness, and has emerged as a cult classic that has stood the test of time.
