    Live At Carnegie Hall

This is a dazzling recital, taped live at Carnegie Hall in November 2003--complete with applause. Lang Lang's virtuosity is almost frightening: the Liszt Reminiscenses du Don Juan is a showpiece when played normally. Here, Lang plays it to its extremes, with soft passages amazingly soft and subtly delineated and the bigger moments heaven-thundering. And it is played so fast, and so accurately (a cascade of notes in mid-La ci darem la mano sounds like a waterfall), that it leaves the listener breathless--surely just what Liszt wanted. In a Haydn sonata, Lang's classical line is impeccable, but he's not afraid to shine through the music and embellish occasionally. The Schumann Traumerei is suitably dreamy and hushed; Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy, a real crowd-pleaser, is just that--beautifully played, familiar yet fresh sounding. And an encore, with Lang's father playing a two-string fiddle called the erhu, is a fascinating look into Eastern music. There's more and it's stunning--and highly recommended for all admirers of great piano playing. --Robert Levine

    Rachmaninov Piano Concerto

The Russian pianist Svjatoslav Richter is now regarded as one of the most outstanding artists of the present day. He was born in 1915 at Zhitomir in the Ukraine, the son of a musical family of German extraction. His father, who had been trained at the Vienna Conservatoire, was a highly regarded pianist and music teacher, who also did some composing; his mother was a gifted amateur musician. The artistic atmosphere of the family house had a decisive influence on the development of the brilliant boy, who was an excellent pianist by the time he had reached the age of eight. Ten years later he gave his first piano recital in Odessa, where he worked for a time as a chorus repetiteur. At the age of 22, he went to Moscow, where he completed his training under one of Russia's foremost piano teachers, Heinrich Neuhaus. For many years, Richter confined his activities as a piano soloist to Russia and eastern Europe. In 1959, however, he traveled by way of Helsinki to western Europe, where a few recordings had already made his name a legend. His concerts in the western world were sensational successes whose repercussions were felt for months afterwards, and he celebrated his greatest triumphs of all during his tour of the U.S.A. in 1960, traveling right across the continent to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

    Wagner: The Collector's Edition

The 6-LP limited edition set includes landmark performances from Jessye Norman, Herbert von Karajan, Karl Böhm, Jess Thomas and more; a musthave
    for the dedicated Wagner collector.

Richard Wagner was one of the most revolutionary figures in the history of music, a composer who made pivotal contributions to the development of harmony and musical drama that reverberate even today. Indeed, though Wagner occasionally produced successful music written on a relatively modest scale, opera -- the bigger, the better -- was clearly his milieu, and his aesthetic is perhaps the most grandiose that Western music has ever known. Early in his career, Wagner learned both the elements and the practical, political realities of his craft by writing a handful of operas which were unenthusiastically, even angrily, received. Beginning with Rienzi (1838-40) and The Flying Dutchman (1841), however, he enjoyed a string of successes that propelled him to immortality and changed the face of music. His monumental Ring cycle of four operas -- Das Rheingold (1853-54), Die WalkÜre (1854-56), Siegfried (1856-71) and GötterdÄmmerung (1869-74) -- remains the most ambitious and influential contribution by any composer to the opera literature. Tristan and Isolde (1857-59) is perhaps the most representative example of Wagner's musical style, which is characterized by a high degree of chromaticism, a restless, searching tonal instability, lush harmonies, and the association of specific musical elements (known as leitmotifs, the flexible manipulation of which is one of the glories of Wagner's music) with certain characters and plot points. Wagner wrote text as well as music for all his operas, which he preferred to call music dramas.

Brahms Concertos (Piano Ctos Nos. 1 & 2)

Intense, romantic music-making from the world's most captivating pianist. Thrilling, deeply personal interpretations of the dark, passionate sound-worlds of both Brahms piano concertos. A unique, multi-faceted artist who continues to push creative boundaries, Grimaud is one of few pianists to conquer the monumental dimensions of the epic Op.83.

Recorded under studio conditions in Vienna's legendary Musikverein, the 2nd Piano Concerto marks Grimaud's debut recording with the celebrated
Wiener Philharmoniker; coupled with the equally coveted Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks for the 1st Concerto, Grimaud has discovered
    exemplary musical counterparts.

Conductor Andris Nelsons - dubbed "Der Wunderdirigent" by the SÜddeutsche Zeitung - is one of today's most exciting young interpreters of Romantic
    repertoire.

    Duo (Schumann, Debussy, Shostakovich, Brahms)

Two of today's most passionate and inspirational artists join forces in the recital programme that brought audiences to their feet at the Menuhin Festival in
Gstaad in Summer 2011. The chemistry between HÉlène Grimaud and Sol Gabetta left critics and audiences nothing short of euphoric and this first duo
recording captures the revelatory magic of their collaboration.

This is the first time, that either artist has embarked on a dedicated duo recording project and it goes far beyond a traditional musical collaboration. Based
on a rare understanding on many levels - musical, emotional and personal, this fresh and strong encounter does not even raise the question of who
accompanies whom. Finding new musical insights in familiar work, HÉlène and Sol present masterpieces in new light.

The album reprises the same programme the duo performed in Gstaad: Robert Schumann's FantasiestÜcke, Claude Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor, Johannes Brahms Sonata for Cello and Piano No.1 in E minor and Dmitri Shostakovich's Sonata for Cello and Piano.

"Grimaud doesn't sound like most pianists: she is a reinventor of phrasings, a taker of chances Her albums aren't merely proficient tours through the
repertoire; they are highly personal explorations that can stand out among dozens of rival performances. Her strongly interpretive playing has made her
a favorite among many conductors and reviewers." (The New Yorker). HÉlène's recordings have been best-sellers on the Yellow Label with more than 800.000 units sold altogether to date.

Like Grimaud, in addition to performing traditional repertoire with the world's great orchestras, Sol Gabetta is a champion of new works and a passionate
musical collaborator. Argentine-French of Russian origin, Sol is a best-selling, chart-storming artist, who is regarded as one of the great cellists of our day,
impressing with her intriguing, full-bodied approach and a charismatic, conquering personality.

Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter is here at her commanding, warm-toned best! Sensitive, sensuous, soulful and soul-baring, ravishing and ravaged, the music enters your living-room with a vividness you may find overpowering. Mutter and Deutsche Grammophon's commitment to new repertoire is in itself cause for celebration. Mutter performs with conductor James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

    Cello Concertos

The greatest cellist of modern time -- well, who could argue with a statement like that? After all, Mstislav Rostropovich is a supreme virtuoso, a charismatic performer, and a sublime interpreter and virtually every one of his recordings is as good as it gets for the repertoire. The key word, of course, is virtually: while Rostropovich's Dvorák concerto with Karajan, his Beethoven sonatas with Richter, his Brahms sonatas with Serkin, and above all his Shostakovich sonata with Shostakovich are definitive, can one say the same of his Boccherini, Vivaldi, and Tartini concertos with Paul Sacher? Or could one say that Rostropovich does not so much play the music of the great Italian Baroque composers as overwhelm it, that his virtuosity, his charisma, and his interpretations are more than the music can bear and that the listener is left not with fond memories of the music but instead with the overpowering impression of an unstoppable musical personality having his way with the music. The results are initially awe-inspiring but may ultimately prove to some to be empty. Accompanied -- the more appropriate word might be enabled -- by Sacher and the Collegium Musicum ZÜrich, the greatest cellist of modern times came, saw, and conquered the finest cello concertos of Baroque times. Whether that's a good thing or not is up to the listener.

    Orff: Carmina Burana (Speakers Corner)

Sung by world renowned soloists and conducted by the legendary Eugen Jochum, this recording of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana was authorised by the composer himself. It follows, therefore, that the present recording met with the high requirements of the composer himself and so represents an unusual collector's item. Orff intended not just to copy the medieval lyrics but to express the mood of that era. His highly rhythmic compositional style reflects the archaic character of the vocal line. The listener experiences not only the vital primordial pulse of the music in this thrilling interpretation but also the mystery of Fate through the tender lyrical passages.

Orff's homage to wine, women and song of the Middle Ages, closely bound up with spring and love, is supported by balanced and precise sound technology. The listener is spirited away to the musical world of Carmina Burana by this recording.

Recording: October 1967 at the Ufa Studio, Berlin by Klaus Scheibe / Production: Dr. Hans Hirsch

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 6 Pathetique (Speakers Corner)

Made during the pioneering days of stereo technology when everyone was vying for a piece of the cake, it is hard to believe that this absolutely top-notch recording of Tchaikovsky's "PathÉtique" has never been brought to the ears of music lovers until today. And it is even more unbelievable since it was made by a first-class orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and conducted by one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, Ferenc Fricsay. The reasons for the non-release are a matter of speculation because those responsible have kept them under their hat.

Not even the man behind the microphone, Werner Wolf, can recall making this recording - although a yellowed recording protocol discloses carefully noted details about the recording venue and date. No wonder that the tapes never got made into records. It is not with a little pride and much joyful anticipation that the announcement can be made: the record is spinning on the turntable at last!

And at long last a gap in Fricsay's repertoire can be closed. Specially recommended: listen to the wonderful clarity of the upper strings which is preserved even in the softest passages.

This record was part of the 3-LP Set "The Conductors" and is now available again.

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 5 (Speakers Corner)

Recordings of Tchaikovsky's late symphonies with the Leningrad Philharmonic under Mravinskij were a legend even in the days of mono recording technique. It comes as no surprise therefore to learn that Tchaikovsky fans were overjoyed when these three great symphonies were released at last on the Yellow Label in top hi-fi quality at the beginning of the Sixties. Masterful performances, as thrilling as live recordings, now became available - recordings which were far superior to all others on the market. Even when the purported 'miracle' of digital recording technique began to take over and industrial record production had become a matter of course, Mravinsky's recordings were still available in a 2CD set. There are reasons enough to re-release the Fifth Symphony as an individual LP, without going into lengthy discussions about which of Tchaikovsky's late symphonies is the most important. Those who treasure a mono version or a Mravinsky recording from an unknown source in their collection are now given the opportunity to compare their version with the present re-release. All others can congratulate themselves on possessing a milestone recording, a true work of reference, for no other Mravinskij sounds better than this one.

    Musicians:

    • The Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra

    • Jewgenij Mrawinskij (conductor)

Recording: November 1960 at Musikverein Großer Saal, Vienna, by Harald Baudis

    Production: Karl-Heinz Schneider

    Berlioz - Harold In Italy

Cut at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Stereo Analogue Master Tapes

Leonard Bernstein was one of the most recorded conductor/composers in history and whereas most of his work was released on CBS (Sony) and Deutsche Grammophon, during the 1970s several notable EMI recordings came out of his association with the Orchestre National de France (including Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique.

EMI had recorded Orchestre National de France (also known as Orchestre National de l'Office de Radiodiffusion TÉlÉvision Française (ORTF)) for many years under its chief conductor Jean Martinon. However, largely as a result of the concerts he gave in the 1970s, Bernstein immediately struck up a rapport with the orchestra and the result was magic: The French orchestra play beautifully for Bernstein, and they also sense the ebb and flow of tempo which he imparts to the music. as the GRAMOPHONE wrote in 1977.

Recorded on 3 November 1976 at the famous Salle Wagram, Paris.

Produced by John Mordler and engineered by Paul Vavasseur.

Cut at Abbey Road Studios from the original stereo analogue master tapes with the Neumann VMS82 lathe fed an analogue pre-cut signal from a specially adapted Studer A80 tape deck with additional 'advance' playback head, making the cut a totally analogue process.

In the original November 1977 review of the EMI LP, JW of the GRAMOPHONE wrote that the:
"...performance can be recommended as a brilliant and colourful encounter with one of Berlioz's most enjoyable scores" of the last movement JW wrote: "Bernstein makes it thrilling, but not in the frenetic manner which would regard tension as an end in itself, rather than a product of potent feeling. This is a splendidly delivered climax to a work which Bernstein clearly admires. He draws beautifully sharp, clean playing from the orchestra (the brass, in particular, has a cut which exactly suits Berlioz's scoring); and he is given a comparable sound."

Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10 (Speakers Corner)

Russia in the year 1953. After the October Revolution this was probably one of the most eventful epochs in the whole of the 20th century as far as social development and Art were concerned. When Stalin's reign of terror at last came to an end Shostakovich was able to realize his artistic ideas without fear of political persecution. And this is precisely the reason for regarding the premiere performance of his Tenth Symphony, in December 1953, as a gesture of freedom after years of discrimination. Shostakovich wanted his music to reflect human feelings and passions - and indeed the rugged first movement is filled with melancholy. Many biographers have identified a brutal portrait of the dictator Stalin in the strained mechanism and whip-lash rhythm of the following Allegro. The third and fourth movements take on a brighter character and are filled with song-like melody which leads to a splendid Finale.

Herbert von Karajan and his Berlin orchestra made the present recording just a few years after the work's composition; even today it is still considered one of the very best performances of this unique work.

Recording: November 1966 at Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin, by GÜnter Hermanns and Hans Weber

    Production: Otto Gerdes
