Reflections: Mojave DesertThe project started simply because we were on tour with the band, had just finished FYF fest in LA, and had a week before picking up the rest of the tour in Phoenix. On the way, we stopped for a week near Joshua Tree National Park. The idea was to go somewhere fairly remote and setup to rehearse. It was peak summer, so we set up outside and would be playing throughout the day and night. Whilst we were out playing and exploring the area around us - the sound reflecting from the rocks, the sound of the wind between them, complete stillness at night and packs of roaming coyotes in the distance, it became apparent that we could use this as its own unique recording environment. Anna in our crew creates the projections for our live show but is predominantly a filmmaker. We made a few calls to friends in LA and borrowed some film/sound gear and recorded some of the new music that came out of the rehearsals. Through the process of making this record, we decided to start a series of musical & video explorations in interesting locations, where the music is a function of its surroundings. This first experiment only marks the beginning of this idea, and I am currently seeking new interesting acoustic environments to explore.

Rock & Roll Nightmare (Awaiting Repress)Rock & Roll Nightmare is the second album by Southern California's LOS INFERNOS. Legend has it that Jello Biafra was so impressed upon seeing them live on various occasions in various towns that he offered them a deal. Eager to get the ball rolling, we released a single called The Outlaw/Beer Run (Virus 225) in April 1999.
LOS INFERNOS are 5 working-class dudes from Riverside in the glorious Inland Empire. Suburbia nestled between the Mojave desert and L.A. They grew up listening to X, Black Flag, Flesheaters as well as Link Wray, the Ventures and Dick Dale. So its no wonder that musically Los Infernos meld together twang, punk, rockabilly, surf, and a touch of hillbilly & blues. They have built up quite a reputation as a hot live band. So hot, in fact, that their van once caught on fire!
Rock & Roll Nightmare carries on where their debut album Planet Kaos left off. SoCal surf, Riverside rockabilly, and hillbilly hardcore that should appeal to sweaty pompadours, Gear-heads, as well as Fat Wreck-kids.1. We Gotta Get Out

The desert is a place of hardship and subtle beauty, a stark world that reveals its secrets slowly and carefully. For the renowned Saharan band TINARIWEN, the desert is their home, their hypnotic and electrifying guitar rock reflecting the complex realities of their homebase in North West Africa. The band releases their new album Emmaar in 2014.
Emmaar is the follow up to the group's 2011 album Tassili, recorded in the Algerian desert with an esteemed cadre of musicians including Wilco's Nels Cline and TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone - the album won a Grammy for Best World Music.
But due to political instability in their homeland, TINARIWEN recorded the new record in another desert: Joshua Tree, California. Created over three weeks in the region known for spaced-out rock 'n' roll and psychedelic cowboy folk, Emmaar showcases an organic feel from the rolling hand drums and meandering guitars of album opener "Toumast Tincha" chants to the galloping beats of the forward-marching "Chaghaybou." "We were not in a proper studio or outside in the desert like Tassili," Ag Leche says, "we built a studio in a big house in Joshua Tree. Everybody in the same room, with no separation. We wanted something which sounded natural and live."
Along with the original members who founded the group in the 1980s (vocalists and guitarists Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni, and Alhassane Ag Touhami) and the younger generation who grew up listening to the band and joined in the 1990s (multi-instrumentalist Eyadou Ag Leche, guitarist Elaga Ag Hamid, and percussionist Said Ag Ayad), a group of American musicians appear on the album. Accompanied by Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Matt Sweeney from Chavez, Nashville fiddler Fats Kaplin, and poet Saul Williams, Emmaar (mixed by Vance Powell (Jack White, The Dead Weather ) is a richly layered listen solidified by atmospheric textures and gritty guitar-work.1. Zayna Jumma (Discontinued) (On Sale)LP version of Group Doueh's record Zayna Jumma. From the gorgeously cracked yet all-embracing opening drum roll of Zayna Jumma (the title track), it's evident this band is hell-bent on redefining the sound of its influences and in turn, shape the future sound of its surroundings. It's musical alchemy in its purest, most remarkable form, pushing at the boundaries of geographical divergence while simultaneously speaking to the shared resonances between Western rock rhythms and the pulse of the Saharan trance tradition. Since its inception, Group Doueh's ability to craft pop hooks from a foundation of saharoui roots music has been a manifestation of sheer song craft and innovation. The tracks on Zayna Jumma are a deeper excavation of the group's forged terrain: a collision of contemporary Afro-Saharan grooves balanced with the searing modalities of Doueh's desert origins, finally nuanced by the transcendental pop/rock/desert blues elements honed from gestating in the fringes of the Sahara desert. For the latest installment of this Dakhla family's musical dynasty, Doueh recruits his next eldest sons El Waar (synth) and Hamdan (drum kit), and wife Halima is augmented by three female back-up singers. The band keeps evolving and this album reveals its newest phase -- that of a formidable ROCK unit. The songs on this record were recorded in 2010 -- a busy year for Doueh, maintaining its day job as the go-to group of the Saharan wedding industry while still managing recording sessions and a tour with Tony Allen (Fela Kuti's long-time drummer). On the heels of this momentum, Zayna Jumma is released to coincide with the group's 2011 spring/summer tour of the UK, Europe and a first-ever U.S. tour. This band continues to redefine the musical landscape and keep listeners amazed and transfixed. It's the perfect ecstatic music for the impending apocalypse, a rogue sound rooted in the past and yet boldly harnessing the aural possibilities of the landscape ahead... go ahead and jump aboard. Recorded on location in Dakhla, West Sahara in 2010 by Hisham Mayet. Housed in a full-color heavy-duty gatefold tip-on jacket.1. Zayna Jumma

Rat FarmDesert-rock legends Meat Puppets returns this spring with their 14th studio album - the 12-track Rat Farm, which Curt Kirkwood dubs "real blown-up folk music"
The album - the band's fourth since the return of Cris Kirkwood in 2007 - is due out April 16 on Megaforce Records. In addition to the Kirkwood brothers, the band now features drummer Shandon Sahm, son of Doug Sahm, as well as Curt's son Elmo Kirkwood on second guitar.
Of the new album, Curt Kirkwood says:
"I tried to write stuff that would stand on its own - just the chords and the melodies, and play it kind of straight. I think that was the guiding boundary that I gave myself. It was one of those things where a lot of times, in the past especially, Cris would go, 'Well, that's all there is? Let's put a prog rock part in the middle.' But I tried to hold it off as much as I could."1. Rat Farm

This WorldWatter is a new trio made up of close friends and
collaborators whose collective pedigree reads like a desert
island list of must-haves in experimental rock musicians.
Multi-instrumentalists Zak Riles (Grails) and Tyler Trotter
are anchored by legendary drummer Britt Walford (Slint,
Evergreen) on six genre-defying pieces of monolithic
mood music. For Riles and Trotter, it's a chance to dig
deeper into the sandbox in which Grails have sculpted
many mercurial masterpieces in recent years; for Walford,
it's the opportunity to play a substantial role in a new active
band for the first time in nearly twenty years.
Written, recorded, and produced entirely in the group's
collective studios in Louisville, KY, This World is a stunning
combination of heady psychedelic rock, vintage cinematic
New Age explorations, and sinister Krautrock, performed
with seemingly endless stamina. Born out of many
late-night jam sessions, many songs also feature fellow
Louisville icons - Rachel Grimes (Rachel's) provides
several of the album's most sublime moments, and The
For Carnation's Todd Cook lays the heavy, bass-driven
foundation for the penultimate epic, Seawater.
This World is the kind of album that inspires renewed
wonder in the mysterious powers of Louisville's water
supply. It draws impossibly broad inspiration from decades
of Eastern and Western folk, rock, ambient, film score,
library music, and neoclassical, and masterfully emerges
with an ever-enveloping suite perfectly befitting its
constantly curious composers.1. Rustic Fog

Ancestral StarEvan Caminiti (guitars, vocals) and Jon Porras (guitars, vocals, drums, harmonium) met in San Francisco in 2006 and immediately started playing music together. Over the next four years, the two gradually sculpted a vast collection of hazy desert sky meditations; ominous, barren expanses of music for desert walks at dusk and dark, pastoral passages embellished with psychedelic and atmospheric wash. A mixture between devotional ragas and dusty stomp with atmosphere and production that references shoegaze and black metal influences.
Ancestral Star, their third LP, marks the evolution of the Barn Owl sound into a territory where it has become wholly its own, transcending the sum of its influences and taking on a life of its own. At the same time, it is a more realized extension of that sound. Caminiti and Porras paid close attention to the composition of each track and its flow within the album as a whole. Engaging throughout, every moment contributes to an overall feeling of mysterious desert expanse and a sonic narrative that unfurls like a cinematic metaphysical western.1. Sundown

Bidin' My Time (Pre-Order)Chris Hillman, whose credits include co-founding Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Byrds, as well as the Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas and Desert Rose Band, is truly one of the architects of American music. His newest solo work, Bidin' My Time, produced by Tom Petty and executive-produced by Herb Pedersen, captures a rarity: an icon who has never sounded better, making music with old friends for the sheer love of it.
Collaborators and admirers from Hillman's storied career appear throughout the record: Tom Petty; Hillman's Byrds bandmates David Crosby and Roger McGuinn; the Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, and Steve Ferrone; Desert Rose Band's John Jorgenson, Pedersen, and Jay Dee Maness; premier upright bassist Mark Fain; singer/guitarist Josh JovÉ; and fiddler Gabe Witcher.
The album kicks off with a new recording of Pete Seeger's and Welsh poet Idris Davies' 'The Bells of Rhymney,' which the Byrds recorded for their debut. 'Here She Comes Again' was co-written by Hillman and McGuinn and, until now, had only been recorded on a live Byrds album in Australia. 'She Don't Care About Time' was written by Byrds co-founder Gene Clark, and was the original B-side to 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' Covers of the Everly Brothers' 'Walk Right Back' and Petty's 'Wildflowers' round out this understated yet undeniable masterpiece.

In Chrome Cactus, The Young have created
a HUGE sounding, timeless rock album that
reinforces and revitalizes everything that is
great about American Rock Music in 2014.
Taking influence from early ZZ Top, Link Wray,
Lungfish, Dead Moon - Chrome Cactus is a ball
of power and controlled feedback disguised as
ten of the catchiest songs you'll hear this year.
Chrome Cactus is a far darker version of Austin's
The Young than ever before. The breezy
optimism of their earlier albums has been
switched out for sinister, creeping dread in both
the lyrics and music.
The rhythm section of drummer Ryan Maloney
and new bassist Lucas Wedow drive a heavy
foundation for guitarists Hans Zimmerman
and Kyle Edwards, who have reached dizzying
new heights. Expertly produced by fellow
sonic assassin Tim Green (Nation of Ulysses,

Deep TripDestruction Unit are an American band formed in the Sonoran desert of Arizona. Dug up from the sonic landfills of the cosmos, these radical desert dwellers have built a reputation for both mesmerizing and terrorizing crowds with their sheer
power and intensity.
Formed by Ryan Rousseau, D. Unit was initially a synthheavy three piece whose other members were Jay Reatard and Alicja Trout (Lost Sounds); likewise Rousseau was also in the Reatards before Jay went solo. Born out of the nucleus of the Memphis Goner Records scene and transplanted into Tempe, AZ, Rousseau has grown the band in the last few years into a full sonic assault, which now includes three guitar players (himself, Nick Nappa & Jesco Aurelius), his brother Rusty Rousseau on bass, and a 19 year-old classically trained drummer, Andrew Flores. This line-up has released several cassettes on their own label Ascetic House, a small run lP, Void on Jolly Dream and most recently a limited edition 7 on Suicide Squeeze.
Deep Trip is their first proper studio album, produced by Ben Greenberg of The Men, Hubble, and Pygmy Shrews at Vacation Island in NY. It's the first long player which truly captures their burning spirits. Morphine boogie for the 21st century noise addict. Pirates (On Sale)Rickie Lee Jones Pirates On Numbered Limited-Edition 180-gram LP From Mobile Fidelity. Singer-Songwriters gorgeous-sounding 1981 album finally remastered!
Rickie Lee Jones' Pirates arrives like a cloudburst in the desert of Eighties formula pop music and recycled heavy-metal rock. So wrote Stephen Holden in Rolling Stone in his five-star review of the eclectic artists sophomore album, a set that continues to defy eras and styles. While less-well known than her 1979 self-titled debut, the ambitious 1981 record remains Jones definitive statementan effort steeped in biographical details, fictional circumstances, and classic literary elements.
Narratively blending West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet while also exploring spirit worlds and her breakup with Tom Waits, Pirates is at its core an idiosyncratic fusion of possibilities. And does Jones deliver! Accompanied by an all-star lineup that includes trumpeter Randy Brecker, Steely Dan icon Donald Fagen, drumming colossus Steve Gadd, session pro Victor Feldman, and legendary jazz arranger Ralph Burns, the singer-songwriter achieves a musical nirvana that encompasses post-bop, coffeehouse folk, bohemian pop, romantic soul, Beat poetry, and Broadway showtunes.
Harmonized vocals and jive talking bring the piano-based records rich characters to life, making it seem as if listeners are overhearing conversations between strangers. In more than one way, Pirates is a self-contained theatrical production in which Jones singing is the star attraction. Her moody whispers, cries, and coos are the voices of spurned lovers, alienated outcasts, and unlikely heroines. Albums with this kind of stylistic magnitude, close-up intimacy, and emotional intensity come around only once or so a decade.
Mobile Fidelity is proud to have had the opportunity to remaster Pirates from the original analog master tapes and produce a version that captures every nuance of this great-sounding studio masterpiece. Co-produced by Russ Titelman and Lenny Waronker (whose long list of credits include Randy Newman, James Taylor, and Eric Clapton records), trust us when we say that this 180-gram LP is one of the finest-sounding pop records youll hear. Fans of Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Carole King, and Sarah Vaughan should consider this requisite listening. MoFis mini-LP style packaging only adds to the allure.

RatchetShamir is Shamir Bailey, a 20-year-old Las Vegas native who grew
up not on the strip but in the desert. His verve for life makes him
almost impossible to categorize. As a young musician, he moves in
and out of soul, r&b, house, disco, rap, and pop - in the tradition
of artists like Prince, Grace Jones, David Bowie, and Madonna.
Genre is a tool for Shamir, not a boundary. Or as Shamir would put
it, "It doesn't matter what you sound like - you just have to be you."
With an androgyne croon that recalls Nina Simone, Shamir rose
from the suburbs of Vegas after sending demos to Nick Sylvester,
who runs the GODMODE label out of New York. Together they
made Northtown, Shamir's debut EP (2014), and continued their
working relationship for Ratchet, Shamir's first LP for XL Recordings.
It's an ecstatic dance-pop record that also has some dust and age
to it, sparkling with the grit of a desert geode. The songs are about
growing up in Vegas, though not the Vegas you think you know.
The music is fun even when it's mostly introspective, introspective
even when it's mostly fun. There's an obvious fluidity to Shamir. He

ADAD-ANT-6515xSimian Mobile Disco
WhorlIn April, Simian Mobile Disco trekked out to the Southern California desert, taking with them their new live set up - two modular synths, two sequencers, and a mixer. Over a period of three days, they jammed and rehearsed in the desert, culminating in a one off sold out live show at Pappy & Harriet's, Pioneertown, allowing 900 fans to witness part of the recording process.
Those sessions, taped under the desert sky, became the basis for their brand new album / live project "Whorl". Now, after completing mixing and mastering, they are pleased to announce that the final studio album will be released through Anti- Records (Tom Waits, Kate Bush).
SMD's new live system was born out of a desire to challenge themselves - to remove computers altogether, going back to hardware sequencers, and limiting themselves to a suitcase sized rack of modular synth gear each -which both reduces the sound palette but allows much more hands on, real time manipulation - constraining themselves technically, to free themselves up musically.
Jas, on the recording process - "The recordings we did in the studio while we were writing and rehearsing the new material for Whorl were simply live takes - the system we're using has limited ability to save patterns in the sequencer, but nothing like the flexibility of a computer. Live performance and studio composition are essentially now the same process, rather than the common method of writing a track using the computer, and then working out ways to perform it live. We planned not to slavishly limit ourselves just to this performance - when we came to mixdown the album, we used portions of three sessions - the show itself, an extended jam we did in the desert the day before, and a little of our London studio rehearsal. Future live performances of Whorl are currently being planned, with a full list of tour dates to come - each show will be a live recreation of that recording process, so each time "Whorl" will be slightly different.
To reflect the organic, analogue aims of the new musical set up, long time SMD art & video collaborators Jack Featherstone & Hans Lo have built a complimentary bespoke hardware system to create the album's visual aesthetic. The system involves feeding live generated digital content through an oscilloscope, filming the oscilloscope's screen, then further processing the image produced. This system will be used in forthcoming videos and SMD's live shows (it was debuted at Sonar this weekend). The cover image is a still grabbed from one of these oscilloscope jams, capturing a moment of flux in performance.
The accompanying trailer showcases all the elements of the Whorl project, including the desert valley where the rehearsal/jam was recorded, the landscape that inspired the performances, the oscilloscope visuals and the show at Pappy & Harriets. In the coming weeks, further video pieces will explore different elements in more detail. The video is set to a short excerpt of "Tangents".1. Redshift

Thru Me AgainThru Me Again is the 2nd release from Chilean trio La Hell Gang
and their rst with Mexican Summer. Hailing from Santiago, which
plays host to an ever growing psychedelic scene (Holydrug
Couple, Follakzoid, La Banda, etc), the band create a remote and
wild brand of rock 'n' roll. The eight tracks across Thru Me Again
weave seamlessly, channeling heat, light and endless desert
dunes. Despite the heavy context, there's a real clarity in the
production, making the blistering guitar solos and mirage-like
vocals all the more potent. Tracks like Inside My Fall and Last
Hit recall bands like The Black Angels and BRMC, but some of
the more lucid moments (Sweet Dear, So High) feel like a
grittier Brightblack Morning Light. The soundtrack for your heat
swept summer.1. Inside My Fall
