    Pacific Ocean Blue

    At first a somewhat un-noticed Wilson brother at the beginning of the Beach Boys' career, Dennis Wilson later matured into an excellent songwriter, producer, and vocalist. His heartfelt ballads and pop gems contributed heavily to the Beach Boys' late 60's and early 70's output.


    A 'target' of female enthusiasm, Dennis was assigned lead vocals for a few early novelty songs: Little Girl (You're My Miss America), Surfers Rule, and This Car of Mine. His first hit came in 1965 when Do You Wanna Dance opened the The Beach Boys Today! album and cracked the Top 20.


    After the high peaks and deep valleys of the Beach Boys career during the late '60s, Dennis began writing songs (Little Bird, Be Still) for 1968's 'Friends'. Throughout the early '70s, Beach Boys fans counted on at least two Dennis songs on each LP, often tender ballads. He made his first attempt at a solo album as early as 1970, but quietly released only one single. He started to work again in 1975, recording with friend and producer Gregg Jakobsen during 1976 to complete Pacific Ocean Blue.


    Though Dennis had started to work on his second album (provisionally titled 'Bamboo') even before the release of Pacific Ocean Blue, increasing problems caused several holdups.


    In late 1983 Wilson drowned while diving around his boat in Marina del Ray, CA. Pacific Ocean Blue is his only complete solo effort released to the public and we're pleased to offer it in audiophile quality!

    Live 1969

    This 1969 live recording from Mount Carmel High School in Houston represents the final stage appearance by the original lineup of Texas garage combo Fever Tree. With two strong studio LPs for UNI Records behind them, the group began to fragment from internal struggles. Consequently, the label asked for one more album. The group complied and the results are contained in this previously unreleased concert recording, presented here in 180 gram vinyl.


    Sharpening their chops on the Gulf Coast circuit, followed by a high-profile opening night gig at Hollywoods legendary Kaleidoscope, Fever Tree developed a keen sense of musical drama and dynamics. This versatility is in sharp display on the concerts rendition of their underground radio hit San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native). For the rest, Live 1969 focuses on groovers, a perfect set-up for the gliding fuzztones of lead guitarist Michael Knust, the sonic organ of Rob Landes, the thick rhythms provided by E.E. Bud Wolfe III on bass and John Tuttle on drums ,and the dynamic, driving lead vocals of Dennis Keller.


    Dont Come Crying to Me Girl, a song originally found on the bands second album, levitates the band beyond any earthly confines. Elsewhere, the set moves between a soaring cover of Donovans Hey Gyp, their own power pop Grand Candy Young Sweet and a whirlng psych take on Wilson Picketts Ninety-Nine and One Half (Wont Do). Playing as if their lives depended on it, Live 1969 captures a band at the height of its powers, forever preserved on this final audio testament.

    Their Classic Debut Album in Mono and Stereo - 2 LP Gatefold Set on 180 Gram Vinyl


    Surfin' Safari is the debut studio album by American rock band The Beach Boys, released on October 1, 1962 on Capitol. Surfin' Safari peaked at number 32 in its 37-week run on the US charts.


    In the autumn of 1961, cousins Brian Wilson and Mike Love composed a song on surfing, titled Surfin' at the behest of Brian's younger sibling, Dennis Wilson. They quickly formed a band, bringing in the youngest Wilson brother Carl on lead guitar and Brian's high school friend Al Jardine on rhythm guitar. Brian took up bass, Dennis the drums and Mike would be the frontman, while they all would harmonize vocals arranged by Brian. Released that December, produced by Hite Morgan, and backed by Luau, Surfin' made number 75 in the US Top 100 in early 1962.


    Father Murry Wilson became the band's manager. He submitted a professionally-recorded demo tape to Capitol Records that spring. The Beach Boys were signed and Surfin' Safari b/w 409 (from the April 1962 demo tape) was released as a single that June. Al Jardine left the band before the demo session, to be replaced by a friend of Carl's, David Marks, until the fall of 1963. With both Surfin' Safari and 409 becoming hits (the former reaching US number 14), Capitol Records approved a full album. Brian Wilson, who regularly collaborated with Mike Love and Gary Usher, contributed the songs that made up the bulk of the LP.

    With 2011's critically-lauded Gentle Spirit, audiences worldwide were introduced to the prodigious talents of singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and unrivalled guitar hero Jonathan Wilson. Gentle Spirit's authentic exploration and modern updating of the Laurel Canyon sound earned it high marks on many year-end lists, including those of MOJO (#4), Uncut (#16) and The Guardian (#28). The eagerly-awaited follow-up, Fanfare, is an even more ambitious production that instantly conjures thoughts of Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue.


    'Fanfare as a word represents a fanciful showing, a bodacious movement of energy, a celebration of sound, Wilson explains. Something to signify an arrival, a special occasion. In this case, it's also the immense opening song that builds into a multilayered cinematic poem from the artist to channel the perfect love song through his piano. As a declaration of intent, it's a powerful statement.


    From the initial idea of the record, I knew I wanted a concert Steinway piano to be the centerpiece--the beating heart--of Fanfare. I was going for this sort of widescreen sound. I wanted strings, horns, vibes, voices, solos, improvisation and a full orchestra on some of the tunes. Having that 9-foot Steinway was central to achieving the sound that I wanted.


    Fanfare was made in Los Angeles over a 9-month period. Featuring vocal and instrumental contributions from heavy friends like Graham Nash, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty), Wilco's Patrick Sansone, Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith and Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, the album is a celebration of friends and family. Additionally, Wilson and British folk legend Roy Harper co-wrote several songs on the record.


    Sometimes Wilson seems to need a pinch to believe his good fortune: There are an awful lot of wizards on this album. Wizards of all ages and life experiences. All these amazing voices and musicians. There is a high degree of musical prowess and pedigree here. Cross-generational musical sharing and passing down traditions is very important to me and something that must continue. This is the way you keep the Fanfare's blowing, this is how you keep the energies interacting.

    Sunflower is considered by most fans - and some of the Beach Boys themselves - to be their finest work after Pet Sounds. More so than any other Beach Boys album, it's a true group collaboration, with Carl Wilson overseeing the production and mixdowns. Brian Wilson himself was very involved in the creation of this album, which includes one of his most enduring compositions, This Whole World, as well as an expansion of a fragment from the Smile sessions, Cool Cool Water, featuring some of the band's most intricate and playful interlocking vocal parts. Sunflower is also the home of some of Dennis Wilson's most enduring work, including the uptempo album opener Slip On Through, and the classic Beach Boys ballad Forever.


    Sunflower, originally titled Add Some Music (after the group's initial single for Warners, Add Some Music To Your Day, which failed to garner enough airplay to become a hit), underwent several lineup revisions before its eventual release in the late summer of 1970. The album, hailed by the U.K. music press as The Beach Boys' Sgt. Pepper, failed to sell, despite glowing reviews and wide acclaim for its rich sonic texture (due in no small part to the efforts of Beach Boys' engineer Stephen Desper, a noted pioneer in quadrophonic and surround sound technologies).

    The first Shut Down was a hugely successful Capitol Records Various Artists compilation LP that had included a pair of Beach Boys tracks. Whereas their previous album Little Deuce Coupe had been a full-on car themed concept album, the Beach Boys' Shut Down Volume 2 was pretty much evenly split between songs with car themes and various high school and summertime-themed tunes. The album sought to further the Beach Boys beyond its ironic sea-and-sun fetish (none but Dennis Wilson ever surfed) into the burgeoning hot-rod subculture. ... the high points remain nothing short of spectacular, including the Mike Love-propelled 'Fun, Fun, Fun,' Wilson's knowing nod to Phil Spector, 'Don't Worry Baby,' and the (hit) 'The Warmth of the Sun.' - Amazon.com


    Apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. The Beach Boys Today! was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master.


    The stereo editions of Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down Vol. 2, All Summer Long, Beach Boys Christmas Album and Beach Boys Concert were all mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensibly under the group's supervision.


    Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions - evidence suggests that he trusted Chuck's skills enough to let him prepare those mixes on his own - but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereo masters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereo versions. Later, when Brian was only delivering mono masters, Capitol would prepare the Duophonic pseudo stereo editions for the stereo market, says Alan Boyd, producer and Beach Boys' archivist.


    All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.

    To meet the standards of Analogue Productions, our Beach Boys album reissues had a mission to achieve: Present the band's music the way that Brian Wilson - famed co-founder, songwriter and arranger - intended. Mono mixes created under Wilson's supervision were how the surf rockin' California crew rose to fame! And we've got 'em!


    For the early part of the Beach Boys career, all of their singles were mixed and mastered and released only in the mono format - they didn't release a single in stereo until 1968.     In numerous sessions between the spring of 1966 and the summer of 1967, The Beach Boys recorded a bounty of songs and drafts for an album, SMiLE, that was intended to follow the band's 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds. The master tapes were ultimately shelved, and The Beach Boys' SMiLE has never been released. Drawn from the original masters, The SMiLE Sessions presents an in-depth overview of The Beach Boys' recording sessions for the enigmatic album, which has achieved legendary, mythical status for music fans around the world.


    This expanded, boxed edition of The SMiLE Sessions features the main SMiLE album tracks, plus four CDs of additional audio from the legendary sessions, a double vinyl LP set, and two 7 vinyl singles. The deluxe box also contains a 60-page hardbound book with rare and previously unseen photos and memorabilia from The Beach Boys archive and newly-written essays by Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, Brian Wilson, and Bruce Johnston, as well as by Beach Boys historian and author Domenic Priore and many other inner-circle participants.


    Produced by Brian Wilson, Mark Linett, Alan Boyd and Dennis Wolfe in Los Angeles The SMiLE Sessions box set includes an assembled collection of core session tracks.     Artwork for all of The SMiLE Sessions has been created with and inspired by Beat-Pop artist Frank Holmes original 1967 LP sleeve art and booklet designs intended for the SMiLE album.     When Capitol/EMI and The Beach Boys first announced plans for The SMiLE Sessions 2011 release, the news spread rapidly. Pitchfork reported, The Beach Boys SMiLE is quite possibly the most storied album in rock history, Billboard proclaimed the upcoming release an event that pop music fans have been waiting for since the Summer of Love, and The Washington Post called SMiLE the most legendary unreleased album of all time.


    The best efforts have been taken by The Beach Boys, the producers, and Capitol/EMI to present the SMiLE album sessions most vital and fascinating elements. However, there will no doubt be some debate amongst Beach Boys fans around the world who, during the past four decades, have become familiar with a variety of widely-traded bootlegged bits and pieces from the sessions. As recently explained by the Detroit Metro Times, No album, released or not, has generated a more personal relationship with its audience, since no two people can ever agree on its content and purpose.


    Beginning with Good Vibrations, The Beach Boys best-selling record in a long string of hits, Brian Wilson had begun to construct songs in a modular form, crafting individual sections that would later be edited together to form a coherent whole. In several intense bursts of creative energy, Wilson, drawing on the talents of the finest studio musicians in Los Angeles and utilizing the best studio facilities available on any given day, laid down dozens of musical fragments, all designed to fit together in any number of possible combinations. No one had done this before in pop music, and his next endeavor would be an album-length version of this unique and luxurious songwriting parlance: SMiLE.


    In 1965, Brian Wilson met an up-and-coming session keyboard player and songwriter, Van Dyke Parks. Noticing Parks' conversational eloquence, Wilson felt that he could help to volley The Beach Boys songwriting into the wave of broader-messaged and socially-conscious rock 'n' roll that would come to define the '60s. They were soon collaborating on keynote songs for SMiLE, including Heroes And Villains, the bands follow-up single to Good Vibrations. Wilson and Parks would also co-write Surf's Up, Vega-Tables, Cabin Essence, Do You Like Worms, Wonderful, Wind Chimes, and other pieces of the SMiLE tapestry. Parks also introduced Frank Holmes to create album sleeve art and a booklet interpreting the albums James Joyce-mode lyrics.


    The reason SMiLE did not see a release in 1967 had more to do with back room business that obscured the creative side of the program than anything else. In late 1966, The Beach Boys formed Brother Records, initially to produce outside artists. Soon, however, The Beach Boys would become embroiled in a court action with Capitol Records with the goal to become the top-selling artists on their self-owned, independent label. The group withheld Heroes And Villains and announced they would instead release Vega-Tables recorded with the bands own money in April of '67 on Brother Records. By July of 1967, Capitol Records and The Beach Boys had come to terms, with Capitol agreeing to distribute the bands Brother Records, and it was agreed that SMiLE was no longer to be the bands next album.

    With the full participation of original Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson, Capitol/EMI has, for the first time, collected and compiled the bands legendary 1966-67 sessions for the never-completed SMiLE album.


    In numerous sessions between the spring of 1966 and the summer of 1967, The Beach Boys recorded a bounty of songs and drafts for an album, SMiLE, that was intended to follow the band's 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds. The master tapes were ultimately shelved, and The Beach Boys' SMiLE has never been released. Drawn from the original masters, The SMiLE Sessions presents an in-depth overview of The Beach Boys' recording sessions for the enigmatic album, which has achieved legendary, mythical status for music fans around the world.


    The SMiLE Sessions double vinyl LP features an approximation of what was intended to be the completed SMiLE album, compiled from The Beach Boys original session masters. Additional session highlights and bonus tracks are also included, including demos and stereo mixes.


    Produced by Brian Wilson, Mark Linett, Alan Boyd and Dennis Wolfe in Los Angeles The SMiLE Sessions 2LP Set includes an assembled collection of core session tracks. The SMiLE Sessions invites the listener into the studio to experience the album's creation, with producer, singer and bassist Brian Wilson's vision leading the way as he guides his fellow Beach Boys, singer Mike Love, drummer Dennis Wilson, lead guitarist Carl Wilson, rhythm guitarist Al Jardine, and newest member Bruce Johnston (who'd replaced Brian Wilson in the touring group during 1965), through the legendary sessions.

    The Beach Boy's Holland, the group's 19th studio album, was recorded in Baambrugge, Netherlands in the summer of 1972 and released in January 1973. Our Analogue Productions reissue also includes a bonus 12-inch EP: Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale). Plus the restoration of We Got Love, eliminated from original U.S. copies of the album!


    By mid-1972, with Wilson's focus waning from the Beach Boys to other creative outlets, and his personal and health-related issues mounting, Wilson was producing less music for the band than ever before. They decamped for the Netherlands hoping to jump-start Brian's creative energies.


    Wilson contributed little to the album, concentrating his musical efforts on Mount Vernon and Fairway, a 10-minute long musical fairy tale eventually included with the album as a bonus EP.


    The title of the bonus EP was named after the intersection where the Love family lived in Los Angeles, and where the Wilsons and Loves would gather for family celebrations back in the 1940s and '50s when Brian, Mike, Carl and Dennis were all growing up. As a concept for a Beach Boys track, Mount Vernon and Fairway initially received a less than enthusiastic response from the other band members when Brian first presented the idea to the group, and this only fueled Brian's steadily worsening depression. Eventually, Carl stepped in to produce the recording for Brian, and the decision was made to include the fairy tale in the album package as a separate EP. Brian himself designed the EP's picture sleeve.


    Although Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) was narrated by Jack Rieley, the voice of the Pied Piper was supplied by Brian in a slightly grainier-sounding cartoon voice.


    The instrumental tracks for Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) were later released on Good Vibrations: Thirty years of The Beach Boys as Fairy Tale Music.


    Upon the band's return from the Netherlands in the fall, Holland was rejected by Reprise Records for not having a potential hit single. Added to the track list was an unfinished Brian Wilson song Sail On, Sailor, that he'd originally co-written with Ray Kennedy, and finally completed with the help of Van Dyke Parks, Jack Reiley and Tandyn Almer. It would ultimately become Holland's most famous track. A casualty of the album's tracklist reshuffling was another Fataar/Chaplin tune, written with Mike Love, called We Got Love. A live version was included on the group's 1973 release The Beach Boys In Concert.


    Early test pressings of Holland, made in the U.S. and U.K. featured We Got Love, as did a few hundred copies pressed and sold in Germany. Early French and Canadian pressings of Holland mention We Got Love on the jacket, but the song is not on those albums. For this Holland reissue Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions has brought back We Got Love as a bonus track!


    The highlights (of Holland are) Carl's 'The Trader,' Brian's 'Sail on, Sailor' and 'Funky Pretty' ... Al Jardine and Mike Love's three-part 'California Saga' shows the effects of their environmentalist spirituality ...(the conclusion, 'California,' is a solid return to the harmony-laden sun-and-surf '60s). 'Only with You' is yet another tender Dennis Wilson ballad, (a rare songwriting collaboration with Mike Love), given an excellent reading by Carl. - AllMusic.com
