    Deerhoof VS. Evil

Right before Deerhoof began recording Deerhoof Vs. Evil, Greg Saunier, Ed Rodriguez, John Dieterich and Satomi Matsuzaki up and split from San Francisco (the only home they've ever known as a band) and left behind all notions of what a Deerhoof record sounds like. Self-recorded, mixed and mastered in rehearsal spaces and band members' basements with no engineers or outside input, Deerhoof vs. Evil dresses up Deerhoof's wellknown recklessness in a newfound elastic groove, one filled with big-hit choruses and exuberantly unfamiliar colors. The musical equivalent of hormones raging out of control, the record explodes out of the speakers with its gawky triumph and inflamed sentimentality.

    Blue Colored Vinyl

Reveille is the perfect addition to any vinyl-lovers or Deerhoof fans collection. After the success of Polyvinyls other classic Deerhoof re-issues this year (Friend Opportunity and Milk Man), Reveille promises to be another quintessential Deerhoof release. This well-regarded album (8.5 on Pitchfork) will be available for the first time ever on 180g blue vinyl and includes a digital download code.

Deerhoof have had an amazing 2011. After releasing Deerhoof vs. Evil in early 2011, the band went on to play in London with The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr., launched a collaborative 7 series (which included Xiu Xiu and Jeff Tweedy), performed at All Tomorrows Parties (curated by Portishead) and even starred in a documentary called BAND (directed by Adam Pendleton).

    Milk Man

    Colored Vinyl

Deerhoofs Milk Man is being reissued on vinyl in celebration of the bands upcoming All Tomorrows Parties performance of the album in July of 2011 in London (alongside The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr.).

The starting point for Milk Man was actually a cartoon character created by Japanese artist Ken Kagami, a longtime friend of Deerhoof vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki. In contrast to the earnest guitar rock that predominated on their previous album Apple O', Milk Man featured a broad palette of orchestral colors, echoes of music theater and camp, polished and gaudy arrangements, Stravinskian harmonies, and a more stylized, anonymous playing style resulting partly from recording most of the instruments at separate times rather than playing together as a band, and partly from many of the arrangements being created on a computer.

    La Isla Bonita

    Gray Colored Vinyl

For years, Deerhoof was the only band that sounded like Deerhoof. Deerhoof's
neck-snapping syncopations, classical melody, minimal gear and maximal music has
slowly become part of the vocabulary: St. Vincent, Flaming Lips, Tune-Yards and Dirty
Projectors are just a few of the bands to have absorbed some Deerhoof DNA.

Deerhoof banged out recordings to send to producer and Godmode Records
honcho Nick Sylvester. No one gave much thought to microphone placement and
other technical matters, or playing the parts perfectly, or even staying in tune. It was
unselfconscious, spontaneous and fun, all four musicians playing in the same tiny
room at the same time. "We forgot," says Greg, "that the camera was there." The
music was ineffably evocative and powerful.

In May, Sylvester recorded the vocals, and that's where the album's pop side comes
out: Satomi's singing is front and center, and if it sounds like she's commanding the
band, it's because she was. Satomi was determined to make a record that was not
just for hardcore Deerhoof fans but instead would speak to everybody.

But there's a darkness to the songs. While Satomi's voice might ring like a sweet bell,
John and Ed's guitars resound with uncanny, virtuosic abandon, and Greg drums
with his ingenious wallop, the gnomic lyrics juxtapose images of false paradise with a
sense of declining empires and decay, a foreboding portrait of an American Weimar.
La Isla Bonita is the glorious sound of four musicians owning their own hard-won and
richly deserved legacy. Even as western civilization goes down the tubes.

    FORGET

While writing FORGET, Xiu Xiu released the lauded Plays the Music of Twin Peaks, collaborated with Mitski on a song for an upcoming John Cameron Mitchell film, and scored an experimental reworking of the Mozart opera, The Magic Flute. All of this frantic, external activity lead to a softly damaged dreaminess and broadened intent that has not been heard before in other Xiu Xiu works.Standout track, "Wondering" is one of the catchiest boogie pop gems in the Xiu Xiu catalog, but like much of FORGET, it still bears an underlying tension that manifests differently in each piece. FORGET was produced by John Congleton (Blondie, Sigur Ros), Greg Saunier of Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu's own Angela Seo.

    Always

    Always.

Rarely is so much meaning conveyed in the space of six letters. And with regard to Xiu Xiu, its applications are infinite: always relevant, always provocative, always surprising, always evolving, always glittering.

It's fitting, then, that as the band (now comprised of Jamie Stewart, Angela Seo, Bettina Escauriza, Marc Riordan, and returning member Devin Hoff) marks a decade in existence, such a powerful sentiment would serve as the title of its latest album.

At its core, Always symbolizes the mutual camaraderie with and deep dedication to each person who has internalized Xiu Xius work, tattooed its name on their skin or soul, and throughout the past ten years made the band a part of their lives. The origin of these intense, everlasting bonds is Stewart. His fearless lyrics have given voice to life's most untouchable and taboo subjects, while his distinctively committed but hushed vocals crystallize and medicate their unsettling impact.

Those familiar with the band's work will take particular note of the times Stewart re-visits profoundly personal accounts from his own life -- most prominently on Beauty Towne (a not-so-uplifting postscript to the muddle of those depicted in Clowne Towne from 2004's Fabulous Muscles) and Black Drum Machine (which finishes the narrative of incest and molestation begun on Black Keyboard from 2008's Women as Lovers).

Elsewhere, Stewart's willingness to broach any subject finds him confronting both the topical and the intimate in equally meaningful ways: Gul Mudin seeks to bring comfort to an Afghani teenage boy murdered for sport by American soldiers; Joey's Song strives to do the same for Stewart's brother in the aftermath of a family tragedy.

Factory Girls chronicles the sexual objectification and desperate existence of Chinese female, migrant workers. I Luv Abortion, featuring perhaps Stewart's most unhinged vocal ever, careens through the resolute heartache of a friend too young to be pregnant and seeks to personalize this most political issue.

But while such writing is worthy of reverence, Always' most arresting moments lie in its sonic innovation -- transforming avant pop elements from an undertone into a bright black focal point while adding new influences such as choral music, kraut rock and animal field recordings.

Produced by Deerhoof's Greg Saunier (who also contributes drums and vocals to the album) and mixed by John Congleton (Antony and the Johnsons, Marylin Manson, the Roots) the album is positively vibrant.

During recording, Stewart saw a Bible verse spray painted on the wall of his gym. He interpreted the verse to mean, Horror and beauty are the same; love and hate are the same, the tireless dread of our own lives and of living can be embraced with the same fervency as what we find beautiful.

Composed of this essence, the album proves that perhaps the only six letters to carry the same weight as always are these: Xiu Xiu.

Moth To A Flame, the album's transportative closer, finds Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl in full psychedelic guise, echoing the minor-key atmospherics of Pink Floyd's Breathe alongside a celestial chorus and mercurial slide guitar.

Midnight Sun follows 2010's Mark Ronson-produced Jardin Du Luxembourg and the same year's homegrown Acoustic Sessions.

In more recent times, the duo have toured with fellow psych voyagers The Flaming Lips and Tame Impala, while Lennon found time to release Mystical Weapons with Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and continue his role as Musical Director of his mother's Plastic Ono Band. Muhl, meanwhile, immersed herself in the folk world with Kemp & Eden.

    Mountain Moves (Pre-Order)

This is no time for the tortured artist. Right now, we're living in two worlds at once. The first is a death-driven monoculture: cutthroat, cynical, exploitative, literally deranged. This is the dominant, unlistening world, the unmoved mountain. Then there's the other world: the still-breathing, idealistic, and wholly life-affirming underground.

Mountain Moves is a celebration of the under-sung communities that have nourished us with their joy, their energy, their individualism, their pointless beauty.Starring the singing, playing, and songwriting of guests whose musical and political voices we admire, Mountain Moves is partly an ecstatic snapshot of a would-be utopia.

Fragmentation is more than an aesthetic. One moment your head's exploding over the stupidity and sadism of our leaders and systems, the next your favorite singer has just emailed you a vocal track recorded in their hotel room on tour. Mountain Moves explores the extremes of despair and hope that make up so much of our minute-to-minute experience.

We met a lot of crowds this year, at Brazilian music festivals, arena shows, protests. The power and potential of a crowd is like music itself - inspiring, healing, urgent. We made Mountain Moves fast, in hopes of capturing some of that communal energy. Please dance and sing along.

Double guitar bliss, a drummer drumming to the edge of his skills, and an unconventional front woman erupting with charisma. The CD version was praised in Spin, Rolling Stone, XLR8R, Pitchfork, NME, Filter, Mojo, and more. This limited edition LP is pressed on green vinyl.

The Baltimore based quartet Ponytail trade in gleefully frenetic, guitar-heavy art-pop that conjures the warped experimentations and fierce rhythmic drive of Krautrock originators like Neu! and Amon Du¿l, while drawing from the irreverent eclecticism and damaged pop of contemporary American acts like Deerhoof and Hella. Ponytail's sophomore release, ICE CREAM SPIRITUAL! is a wondrous blend of surprising pop hooks (the disco-inflected opening of "Sky Drool" is borrowed from an old Stevie Nicks tune), noise-wracked sound collages, and bracing guitar work all held together by the unearthly wails and ecstatic yelps of vocalist Molly Siegel.

The two biggest constants throughout Xiu Xiu's catalog are honesty and evolution. This
remains true with Dear God, I Hate Myself as it delivers a look at responsibility, fear, healing, and societal roles wrapped in rich gothic pop music. The sound is still distinctly Xiu Xiu, but Jamie Stewart's vocals are finally effortless paired with vibrant melodies full of subtlety and the distinct sonic accents expected of this anticipated Xiu Xiu release. The result is a record that proves that art can be pop and pop can challenge you to look inside yourself.

Stewart is joined by new full-time band member Angela Seo on piano, synth, and drum programming; with production handled by Jamie and Deerhoof's Greg Saunier. Together they've crafted a fully-grown sound for Dear God, I Hate Myself with elements from Goth and pop that are expertly performed by a crop of brilliant musicians.

Juana Molina is back with yet another masterpiece album, overflowing with emotions, musical ideas and mysterious atmospheres. With Halo, Juana picks up where she left off with her previous acclaimed album Wed 21, and shows once more that she really is on an evolutionary journey of her own devising (Pitchfork), which has brought the eerie, hypnotic music on each of her albums to increasingly haunting heights (Spin).

Halo is Juana Molina's seventh album, it contains twelve songs and was recorded in her home studio outside of Buenos Aires, and at Sonic Ranch Studio in Texas, with contributions by Odin Schwartz & Diego Lopez de Arcaute (who have both been playing live with Juana for a number of years), and Eduardo Bergallo (who has taken part in the mixing of her previous albums), with Deerhoof's John Dieterich making a guest appearance in a couple of tracks.

    Total Dust

Dusted is Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck, LIDS) and Leon Taheny (Final Fantasy, Rituals, Bruce Peninsula). Wanting to explore a different sound, but unsure of where or how to find it, Borcherdt spent a December weekend in Nova Scotia. Alone and unable to sleep in a cold, dank cabin, he drew musical inspiration from his sparse surroundings. Fueled by a psychedelic hum underneath a veil of low drone-y distortion, Total Dust is Borcherdt's revelation.

Most bands don't record through a small, blown-out practice amp. You may find however that it works, as the guitar fights its way through, only the most important notes survive. Their songs don't exist to be overproduced. They're recorded lean and they stay that way. In fact, it's almost impossible to manipulate anything when your studio is either a small converted garage or a rural cabin stocked with a scattered drum kit, a bass synth, and a tambourine. That's why every track was laid completely bare, stripped of all unnecessary instrumentation so that what remains is sometimes melodic, sometimes haunting, and always integral.

Before even one song had been released, the band signed with Polyvinyl and played a show with labelmates Deerhoof and of Montreal. Their performance challenged the limitations of a two-piece: vocals and guitar expelled over a raucous backbone of live drums, 808 samples, and bass synth.

This trio includes Nedelle Torrisi (former Kill Rock Stars artist, The Curtains, Why?, Xiu Xiu), Chris Cohen (The Curtains, Deerhoof, Cass McCombs), and Michael Carreira (music teacher). Every song here is a miniature journey, a free fantasia, a dreamy habitat built out of the minimum of material. Sudden rhythmic gestures and frequent key changes will leave you feeling pleasantly disoriented. The record is humbly inspired by the larger-than-life emotions of West Side Story, the joyfully percussive guitar gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Wizard Of Oz's bittersweet escapism, the other-world sentimentality of Sun Ra's Spaceship Lullaby, and Henry Cowell's ethereal piano string strumming.

The sixth and most accessible album to date, featuring a star-studded cast of players including Deerhoof, Sufjan Stevens, Sereena-Maneesh, and more. What began as a senior thesis project a decade ago has evolved into a musical world so rich with musicality and merrymaking that the first six albums and ten years of touring pomp alone could nourish the most scrutinizing of thrill-seekers. There's no hard distinction between the visuals (costumes and graphics) and the music from this suburban New Jersey group. One enters your heart through your eyes, one through your ears, says Daniel. On tour May through September throughout the US.

You Are Always On Our Minds (On Sale)

Features legendary Mike Watt (Minutemen, firehose, Stooges) on bass, Thollem McDonas (Nels Cline, Tsigoti, etc ad infinitum) on keyboards/piano, John Dieterich (Deerhoof, Natural Dreamers) on guitar, and Tim Barnes (Silver Jews, Jim O'Rourke) on Drums. Veering between the tightly woven and the completely unhinged, trading deep gulfs of ponderous melancholy with gentle, fractured pop fairytales, this release keeps the listener guessing without ever abandoning their own special brand of earthy hall-of-mirrors music. Cover artwork by Rachel Carns (The Need, King Cobra, Kicking Giant).

    Overjoyed

Announcing Overjoyed, the first album in 13 years from legendary punk band Half Japanese. One of the most influential bands of all time, Jad Fair and Half Japanese spearheaded the DIY and Lo-Fi movements, influencing countless bands such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, and perhaps most notably, Kurt Cobain (who ranked Half Japanese amongst his top 50 favorites, had them open the In Utero tour, and was wearing their t-shirt when he died). Without exaggeration, Half Japanese is one of the most important bands in the history of music. Overjoyed was recorded and produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, and ranks amongst the best albums of the band's catalog.

    The Birth

After traversing the galaxy as the road crew for fellow Oklahomans The Flaming Lips, a strange yet melodically intoxicating band has emerged, the psych/prog/experimental pop quartet Stardeath And White Dwarfs. One-half stoners with nothing to do but roll joints on their King Crimson record sleeves and one-half confetti launchers/space bubble technicians, Stardeath And White Dwarfs debut their own free-floating circus with their first full-length album, The Birth. A mind-trip of emotion and mood, recalling everything from upper dance freak-outs to downer Floyd-esque anthems, The Birth celebrates a love of all things psychedelic. This standard-weight black-vinyl release is housed in a single-pocket jacket with a digital download card for the full album.

Stardeath And White DWarfs independently released the six song EP, Thats Cool, in 2005, followed by the 7 single in the U.K., Toast & Marmalade For Tea/Chemical, on Half Machine Records in 2008. The band has toured with Deerhoof, British Sea Power, Band Of Horses, Starlight Mints and The Flaming Lips.
