The Evil Divide (Awaiting Repress)Three decades into their celebrated career, Death Angel remain as hungry as ever.
As a result, uncompromising urgency and unpredictability define the Bay Area thrash quintet's eighth full-length album, The Evil Divide [Nuclear Blast]. The group-Mark Osegueda [vocals], Rob Cavestany [lead guitar], Ted Aguilar [guitar], Will Carroll [drums], and Damien Sisson [bass]-satiate the appetite for buzzsaw speed riffs, double bass mayhem, and scorching vocals over the course of ten new anthems.
"I want every record of ours to always sound fucking hungry and desperate," declares Mark. "An injured animal is a dangerous fucking animal. We feel that. We're always striving for more and put everything into it until our bodies give out."
"We know who we are," adds Rob. "We're dedicated to this sound for both the fans and ourselves."
In order to siphon that energy, the group re-teamed with producer Jason Suecof [Trivium, Deicide] for the third album in a row. They traded Northern California for Suecof's Florida stronghold, Audio Hammer Studios, during two months in the fall of 2015. Following three consecutive records together, this lineup gelled more than ever while recording.
"You could feel it," continues Rob. "Everything was so much smoother in all regards. We progressed as a unit, and we all got on the same page pretty quickly. It makes recording and playing even more fun."
"We're collectively focused," says Mark. "Rob and I have grown a lot as songwriters, and the entire band is tighter than ever. We knew what to expect sonically with Jason, but we wanted to push things in a different direction. The production and drum, bass, and guitar tones are more organic. He's got such a great ear and nailed it. It's like we confidently hit our stride."
The first single "Lost" intersects a hypnotically haunting refrain with a chugging percussive groove, dropping the melody like a guillotine between fret-burning leads.
"Everybody feels lost at some point in their lives," explains Mark. "It's that sense of self-awareness or lack thereof that comes through in the lyrics. No one's immune to it. That time can be a fleeting week or a matter of years where you don't know what's going on. Music is a way to get it out and a vessel to vent. It's a universal thing." Opener "The Moth" whips from a galloping guitar death march into a battle-cry. Boasting a lyrical contribution from Rob, it name checks the album title in the chorus.
"Mark really breathes life into what I wrote," says Rob. "We have a great time collaborating and bouncing ideas off each other."
"The world is in such an odd state," sighs Mark. "There's always division, but these days it's wild. People are attacking each other for no reason. That's why I love metal. It's an amazing community, and people get into it for no other reason but the passion for music. It's the one thing we can retreat to."
"Cause for Alarm" volleys between a crossfire of six-string prowess, while "Father of Lies" closes on a haunting acoustic outro, illuminating the music's expanse and declaring another creative victory for the group.
The Evil Divide stands out as the culmination of thirty-plus years of music for Death Angel. It kicked off with legendary debut, The Ultra-Violence, in 1987. The classic Frolic Through The Park began to cement their legacy and even earned the distinction of landing on Loudwire's list of the "Top Ten Thrash Albums NOT Released by The Big 4." The group broke up following 1990's Act III only to reunite in 2004 on Art of Dying for the next generation. A powerful trifecta followed. In 2010, Relentless Retribution boasted a cameo from virtuosos Rodrigo y Gabriela, while 2013's The Dream Calls For Blood bowed at #72 on the Billboard Top 200, selling 5,400 copies first-week and earning the group's first-ever entry onto that respective chart. Beyond continued public praise from the likes of James Hetfield of Metallica and Robb Flynn of Machine Head, the band's music has popped up everywhere from Carl's Jr. commercials to Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. Their fire burns brighter than ever in 2016.
"If you're a casual fan, I hope you really get it on this album," Mark leaves off. "If you've been with us since the beginning, I want you to see we aren't messing around. We're still Death Angel."1. The Moth

Reign In BloodNo one has bettered the ferocity, pace, and brutal power of this 28-minute 10-song set. Guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King fire out of the gate with the infamous Angel of Death and don't take a respite until the fifth cut, Jesus Saves. And that breather lasts all of 30 seconds. Winding like a mutant Paganini piece, Postmortem's hook is so inescapable that even metal neophytes will find it irresistible. Superbly sequenced and wonderfully executed, this favorite of producer Rick Rubin stands as the most extreme album in thrash-metal history.

Twelve years after their 1992 studio record, Force Of Habit, Exodus released Tempo Of The Damned, a worthy comeback with crushing riff attacks, merciless drumming and distinctive vocal outbreaks. Strong and fresh, behold a real thrash hurricane, that continues just as if the band has never left the stage, respectively the studio.
Tom Hunting, Kirk Hammet and Gary Holt founded EXODUS in 1982, shortly after selecting an appropriate singer the band, Paul Baloff, who completed the line up perfectly and bringing the dream to fruition. Within the following year EXODUS gained huge attention in the international underground scene, evolving from an insiders' tip of the tape trading community to a highly popular act. Innovative song writing and explosive live shows made the difference, EXODUS brought Bay Area Thrash to the world and inspired many bands, among them METALLICA, TESTAMENT, DEATH ANGEL and VIOLENCE (respectively MACHINE HEAD).
In 1983 Kirk Hammet left the band to join METALLICA, and was replaced by Rick Hunolt, and soon after Rob McKillop complimented the mix. The debut Bonded By Blood was released two years later and became a timeless thrash classic still appreciated today. A vast tour with SLAYER and VENOM preceded next thus the name EXODUS spread more and more.
Shortly before the second album Pleasures Of The Flesh showed up in 1987, Baloff left the band due to personal and musical differences and got replaced by Steve Zetro Souza (ex-LEGACY). The line-up and chemistry was working for the creativity and the subsequent success of the band. With the studio records like; Fabulous Disaster, Impact Is Imminent and Force Of Habit as well as the live album Good Friendly Violent Fun and the compilation Lessons In Violence EXODUS kept on improving their style and promoted their music with a large number of gigs including tours with PANTERA, ANTHRAX, MOTÖRHEAD, BLACK SABBATH, METALLICA, MEGADETH and many others.
1992 saw the split of EXODUS, affected by stress and personal problems. A short reunion happened 1996 (with their old singer Paul Baloff) with a tour through Europe and North America and the release of the second live record Another Lesson In Violence.
Another break took place until September 2001 when EXODUS attended the Thrash Of The Titans benefit show featuring LEGACY, ANTHRAX, S.O.D. and DEATH ANGEL. Afterwards the band started writing new material but got adjourned abruptly: Paul Baloff suffered a stroke on 2nd February 2002 and passed away. Back with Souza at the microphone EXODUS continued working and finally finished the recording sessions for the new, ultimate comeback album Tempo Of The Damned in 2003. Angel ShadowIt's no surprise that Kim Free started playing the violin at the age of 5. Just about everyone on her father's side of the family was musical. Her great-grandmother conducted orchestras in silent movie theaters. Her grandmother and grandfather both played violin, grandpa with the Cincinnati Symphony. Her aunt is a professional harpist in Lexington, Kentucky. It was in her blood. Growing up at the Rinzai-Ji Zen Center in West Adams, Los Angeles, she diligently practiced her violin while simultaneously absorbing the pop music of the day, especially alternative stalwarts like New Order and The The. As an undergrad at Loyola Marymount University she became Program Director of KXLU, the acclaimed radio station based at the University. She continued playing violin, but this time in a supporting role, with local LA artists like Lavender Diamond.
After graduating in 2006, Kim decided to try her hand at making music on her own. So she took her computer into her bedroom and started crafting some lo-fi compositions. Although she didn't play her violin on her home recordings (she couldn't get the right sound quality), Kim used guitar, bass, synthesizer and sometimes vocals to build her music, which ranged from ethereal to experimental to just plain pop. The cassette DIY culture was just (re)starting in 2008, and Kim's peers wanted to release her music. She called her band Black Church and named herself Sunny Winters. Over the course of three years, there would be 5 cassette-only limited edition Black Church releases on three different labels and Kim performed about twenty shows around Los Angeles as Black Church.
In 2010, Kim decided that her music was ready to move out of the bedroom. The new batch of songs didn't feel like Black Church, it was something new. Her friend Christy Greenwood offered to record her, and so, free of the constraints of the straight-to-GarageBand recording, she was able to once again call upon her first musical voice, the violin.
Angel Shadow is the result of those sessions. Disarmingly fragile and hauntingly dreamy, the 11-song soundscape is scattered with instant earworms that subtly betray Kim's love for pop music. This is an album of transition, the death of Black Church and the subsequent birth of Kim Free, so it's no surprise that all of the songs (including the instrumentals) are inspired by the idea of transition, either to death, like Ease Into Piece and Guantanamo or into the unknown, like Goodbye My Love. From the instrumental opening of Diamond Channel through the hypnotic loop of Starlight Corridor and the satisfying coda of Silver Screen, Angel Shadow tells a story and invites exploration.
Kim Free plays all of the instruments on Angel Shadow, her debut solo album, and she intends to do the same when she starts performing the songs live later in 2012. She'll be hitting performance spaces around the country armed with her mandolin, keyboard, and her grandmother's violin.1. Diamond Channel

Angel Guts: Red ClassroomAngel Guts: Red Classroom is the beginning of Xiu Xiu's descent from grayness into the deepest blackness endurable. It is the sound of Xiu Xiu's death.
This is a bold proposition, even for a band that has never so much pushed the envelope as pulled it (forcefully) away from the line other musicians are willing to toe. And now, in what is unquestionably their darkest hour, Xiu Xiu have lit the envelope on fire and are using it as a torch to light the path ahead.
Having spent the previous four years living in North Carolina, primary songwriter Jamie Stewart relocated to Los Angeles, moving blindly into a neighborhood whose notoriously dangerous reputation was unknown to him.
A park divided among four gangs, a lake routinely dragged for bodies, a building wherein two infant skeletons were recently uncovered -- the aura of his new home bleeds into every pore of the album, each lyric and note bearing traces of its essence: the terrible beauty, the despair, the violence, the ultra humanity, the uncertainty.
I know to a degree I must have romanticized it, Stewart admits, But when it's not safe to go out at night, what else can one?
Romanticized is hardly the word anyone other than Stewart would use. Like its namesake, a Japanese erotic noir film, Angel Guts: Red Classroom is as radical as it is inventive. The subject matter -- racialized sex, double suicide, double penetration, criminality, fear of physical harm -- is unsuitable for the faint of heart. But when the heart has stopped beating, only the soul remains to carry on. And here, Stewart transcribes his without boundaries.
Your face is down alone / On your desk / At the end of the city / You were squashed into / There is no one you love. So begins the album's first verse.
In the wrong hands, such topics could be rendered as far-fetched fantasies. But Stewart's evocative vocals lend his provocative lyrics the balance they need, grounding them in a stark realism that forces us to acknowledge their existence, even confront them (as discomforting as that is).
Unsettling, too, is the music. Working with only analog synths, drum set, and 1970's analog drum machines, Xiu Xiu has never before sounded so focused, so captivating, so intent on delivering a kick to the throat.
Though influences can be cited (Suicide, Kraftwerk, Nico, EinstÜrzende Neubauten), they are ultimately far less relevant than the mark this album will leave on other musicians and music fans from this point forward.
Take Stupid in the Dark -- its tone ominous and pulsing, its harmonies simple and direct, its grip unrelenting. Or Botanica de Los Angeles, a sparse, yet undeniably anthemic merging of bruising drums and bone-rattling bass synths.
Unbearably dark, yet incredibly illuminating, on the John Congleton-produced Angel Guts: Red Classroom Xiu Xiu continues to forge (and at times risk) its reputation as avant-garde pioneers. It is the work of a band unraveling to its core and exposing the boldness within.

Death SongThe Black Angels - Austin's psych rock masters - have confirmed details for their upcoming album, 'Death Song.,' the five-piece's first full-length release in four years.
Written and recorded in large part during the recent election cycle, the music on 'Death Song' serves as part protest, part emotional catharsis in a climate dominated by division, anxiety and unease. "Currency," a strong contender for the heaviest song the band has ever put to wax, meditates on the governing role the monetary system plays in our lives, while slow-building psychedelic earworm "Half Believing" questions the nature and confusing realities of devotion.
Recorded between Seattle and Austin, 'Death Song' features production from Phil Ek (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes, The Shins). The 11-track collection offers a sharply honed elaboration on their signature sound - menacing fuzz guitar and cutting wordplay, steeped in a murky hallucinatory dream.
Since forming in Austin in 2004, The Black Angels have become standard-bearers for modern psych-rock, and the New York Times has said they "play psychedelic rock as if the 1960s never ended, and they are absolute masters of it".
The band has toured with Queens of the Stone Age, Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Black Keys + more, and played festivals such as Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, Primavera, Harvest Fest, Coachella and Bonnaroo. Two of the band members co-founded Levitation Festival (formerly Austin Psych Fest) in 2008, which has since grown into one of the best-reviewed and expertly-curated festivals in the country.LP 1

Other DeathThis fall sees the release of Sean Nicholas Savage's latest record, Other Death. Savage, a master of tenderness, reflection and projection, has released and toured relentlessly in pursuit of the rarer beauties found only in the nuance of pop song and performance. Other Death was recorded in Santa Monica, Los Angeles as a collaboration with Agor, of Savage's Arbutus labelmates Blue Hawaii, while Errhead of Doldrums plays on much of the record. Ramona Gonzalez Nite Jewel also makes an appearance, as do TOPS' Jane Penny and David Carriere. This is Savage's highest fidelity recording to date, with daring, captivating, and as always minimal and soft production style. In contrast to his usual introspection, Other Death is immediately more upbeat, uptempo, confident, inspired and delivers more consistent pop singles than any of his previous records. Savage is not playing to the middle. Here he gives his listeners, those who crave a harder SNS smack, the energy they crave. This is the release fans will turn to when they want to feel the sophisticated, delicate, and enchanted music of Sean Nicholas Savage at its most brave, free and loud. Angels & DevilsIt's after the end of the world, don't you know that yet...
With recent reports from various think tanks predicting we have somewhere in the range of 15 years left before the collapse of society begins, it would seem like Kevin Martin's sonic predictions of dystopian London that were set out on 2008's London Zoo were pretty accurate. And if we are in fact declining rapidly to chaos, there's no better time then the present to take the focus of that sonic assault from earthly domains and blast it to the netherworlds above and below.
The aforementioned London Zoo is where Kevin Martin, found his true voice. Pulling the fringes into a collective, unilaterally hateful assault. A psychological warfare driven by bass that on one hand captured a moment of London, yet also encapsulated a global message influenced by years of timeless and classic out-music.
The latest offering from the The Bug, Angels & Devils, escapes the London cage, drawing on it for influence yet blowing it up into a world-view now seen from Kevin Martin's new Berlin home. A record that simultaneously draws on London Zoo, completes a triptych cycle which started with his Bug debut Pressure, and fills the spaces between and inserts what was missing previously. Both a year zero re-set and a continuation of what has been. Like the Bowie/Eno classic Low, or Can's Tago Mago, the album is split into two distinct themes and explorations of light & dark. Bringing the angel & devil voices together under a single common banner. Antagonist at times, but not solely for the sake of being antagonistic, there's a beauty and lush sparseness to be found within, even when at its most chaotic. Truly only The Bug could find the common ground between Liz Harris (of Grouper) & Death Grips and make it seamless. Angels & Devils stretches the polarity of its predecessor in both directions simultaneously and is even more extreme for its new found seductiveness and added intensity. Deep space is explored, and physical assault is administered. In these days of YouTube quick fixes, and single tune memory spans, its a joy to witness Martin actually charting a cohesive narrative that rejoices in celebrating life through sonic sex and violence, beauty and ugliness. This is an audio thriller that delights in pursuing its own singular path/vision.
With the Angel side(s) up first, things kick off with Liz Harris (of Grouper) in the submerged lushness that is Void. Followed by contributions from ex Hype Wiliams half copeland (Fall), the blissed out patois of touring partner Miss Red (Mi Lost), two truly zoned Bug instrumentals, and rounded out by Gonjasufi on Save Me. It's a collection of heady, dubbed out cinematic blissfulness with a lurking darkness before giving way to devils...
Devils leads off with the return of long time collaborator Flowdan on the mic and the guitar of Justin Broadrick (Godflesh / Jesu) bringing a complete about face to the proceedings and setting the tone with The One. Roll Deep's Manga steps up next with the instant Bug classic Function, which is being currently smashed on dubplate, by Mala, Kahn and Logan Sama. Death Grips raise the antagonistic bar with Fuck A Bitch. Flowdan & Justin Broadrick come back for the cinematic death crawl of Fat Mac. Warrior Queen steps in for hands down the nastiest vocal she's ever delivered (which is saying a lot) for Fuck You, and finally Flowdan steps up again to round it all off with a Devils battle cry of sorts dirty, fuck that murky....
The concept is completed by the artistic expression it's packaged in, courtesy of Simon Fowler (Cataract). Known for his work for Sunn O))), Earth, and others, Simon has delivered a stunning hand drawn illustration, that sort that would make Bosch proud, showing the duality of the proceedings.

Catastrophe BalletFounded in Los Angeles in 1979 by Rozz Williams, CHRISTIAN DEATH emerged as a huge influence for the goth and death-rock movement with their debut album 'Only Theatre of Pain' (1982) as well as the genre-defining 'Catastrophe Ballet' (1984) and 'Ashes' (1985). Like An Ever Flowing StreamFounded 1988 in Stockholm/Sweden, Dismember were among those responsible for Death Metal's big break through. The debut album, "Like An Ever Flowing Stream" from 1991, clearly showed that Dismember are an uncompromising band which resulted in their rise to cult status within a short period of time after the album took the scene by storm. Extensive touring with bands like Death, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse showed that Dismember are a live force to be reckoned with and the number of fans grew steadily. Spurred on by success, it was easy to commence the songwriting for the next album. However, the band then released the 5-track EP, "Pieces", and went out on tour again instead with Napalm Death and Obituary. They played for thousands of fans throughout Europe thus reinforcing their status as one of the best live bands on earth.Side A:
