Under A Funeral Moon (Picture Disc)

Marking 30 Years Of Peaceville Records & Darkthrone, 'Under A Funeral Moon' Is Presented On Special Limited Picture Disc Vinyl With Cut-Out Sleeve, Featuring Artwork From The Original Album

Under A Funeral Moon, Darkthrone's third album was originally released by Peaceville in 1993.

Marking 30 years of Peaceville Records & Darkthrone, Under A Funeral Moon is presented on special limited picture disc vinyl with cut-out sleeve, featuring artwork from the original album.

Under A Funeral Moon is a bleak reflection of contemporary times; featuring harsh guitar riffage and hateful vocals all underpinned by Fenriz's rightly celebrated tight and complex drum patterns. Continuing with its highly impressive series of black and white covers, the band further nurtures its lo-fi approach with a sound that is powerfully focused and entirely unconcerned with modern-day aesthetics. Under A Funeral Moon is the album that many Darkthrone fans hail as the ultimate manifesto for Black Metal.

    Warfare Noise

Greyhaze Records has announced North American release of the vinyl LP reissue of Warfare Noise, the seminal four-way split album featuring Brazilian extreme metal greats SARCOFAGO, CHAKAL, HOLOCAUSTO, and MUTILATOR.

Originally released in 1986 via legendary Brazilian metal label Cogumelo Records, the album's original masters had lost much of their audio prowess due to the long amount of time elapsed since its first release. This new album reissue, however, was carefully restored by mastering engineer Dave Eck and is, once again, available the same way as it was over two decades ago. The savage output of all four bands can be heard just as in the original version.

The packaging of this reissue was also carefully restored by graphic artist Fernando Lima and is now available as a faithful representation of the 1986 release. Aside from the insert, the packaging also includes a special poster with a depiction of the concert flier for the Warfare Noise release show which took place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 1986 featuring all four bands.

Despite having been out of print for decades, the Warfare Noise compilation is one of the most important documents of early Brazilian metal. It features bands that have played an important role in the development of black and death metal including important influence in bands such as MAYHEM, DARKTHRONE, BLASPHEMY, and BEHERIT. The vinyl LP version features the original eight tracks from that album. The compilation is also one of the first albums ever released by Cogumelo Records, who was responsible for the first releases by metal giants SEPULTURA.

Transilvanian Hunger is Darkthrone's fourth album, originally released in 1994. Written & recorded by Fenriz himself at Necrohell Studio, with Nocturno Culto later adding vocals, the album is a masterpiece of primitive monotonous black metal inspired by bands such as Von, Bathory & Burzum. Having stunned critics and fans alike with their acclaimed 2012 Prosthetic debut Empyrean - described as a harrowing descent into the bleakest that black metal has to offer (About.com) - MUTILATION RITES are ready to release their long-awaited follow-up. Once again recorded with Kevin Bernsten (TRIAC, Magrudergrind) at Developing Nations in Baltimore, the new album, Harbinger, will be the band's first full-length to feature Ryan Jones (ex-Today is the Day) on bass and vocals. Pitchfork.com accurately describes MUTILATION RITES in the following manner, "Think of late-period Darkthrone vomiting the youthful version of themselves onto the crowd at a filthy DIY space. It's stately and epic, but booze-soaked, filthy, and feral."

    Why Do The Heathen Rage?

    Not final cover art

The Soft Pink Truth is the solo alter ego of Drew Daniel, one half of celebrated Baltimore-based electronic duo Matmos. After a decade of silence in which Daniel concentrated on Matmos and becoming a Shakespeare professor, The Soft Pink Truth is set to release Why Do the Heathen Rage? whose subtitle "Electronic Profanations of Black Metal Classics" reveals its bizarre agenda as an unrequited love letter to a justly divisive genre. A gleeful queer travesty of black metal's undying obsession with kvlt authenticity, Why Do the Heathen Rage? is also a formally precise homage executed with a scholar's obsession. With the guitar chord transcription assistance of Owen Gardner (Teeth Mountain, Horse Lords) and a coven of guest vocalists, including Antony Hegarty and members of Locrian and Wye Oak, Daniel meticulously transposes the riffs, structures and patterns of black metal chestnuts and deep cuts by Darkthrone, Venom, Mayhem, Sarcofago and more into oddly hybrid new forms. Cruising camp absurdity by forcing a sticky tryst between the two mutually incongruous early 90s subcultures of rave and black metal, the results are bracingly strange on first listen, but curiously addictive as the album sinks in.

Imitating the countless black metal albums that begin with ominous intros, the album commences with "Invocation for Strength", a spoken word track in which a Radical Faery poem used by gay activist Arthur Evans in his classic Witchcraft and the Gay Counterculture is read by Drew Daniel and Antony (Antony and the Johnsons). After this queer hymn, the rhythmic assault begins with an industrial gabber take on Venom's genre-founding song "Black Metal", featuring vocals by Baltimore artist Bryan Collins and screams from Daniel. Stark trap beats and rave synths meet two-step house bounce on "Sadomatic Rites," originally by Beherit, whose electronic opus H418ov21.c was an inspiration to Drew as he was making this album. Adding a witchy twist to an underground metal classic, Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Dungeonesse) lends her smoky, soulful voice to an orgasmic house deconstruction of Sarcofago's redlight anthem "Ready to Fuck." After a surprisingly sensitive guitar led intro, "Satanic Black Devotion" erupts with full on screaming vocals from Terence Hannum (Locrian), paired with IDM beats, synthetic banjo, and a rather glaring plunderphonic re-working of a recognizable dancefloor classic. Side Two kicks off with a stark, vogue-ball inspired rethinking of Darkthrone's "Beholding the Throne of Might", with whispered vocals from London based free improviser/composer Jennifer Walshe and a spoken interlude from David Serrotte of the vogue ball crew House of Revlon. The goth factor spikes on "Buried by Time and Dust", in which Daniel's Matmos partner M.C. Schmidt croaks the lyrics to the vampiric Mayhem original on top of MIDI harpsichord while a moldy 808 drops the "Planet Rock" beat. In an Ouroboric final gesture, the album concludes with a paroxysmic take on "Grim and Frostbitten Gay Bar" by Impaled Northern Moonforest, the parodic fake black metal project of Anal Cunt's Seth Putnam. A blizzard of snippets of pop, house, crust and metal are shredded and smothered in lo-fi screaming and arctic field recordings, ending the album on suitably contradictory notes of mockery and celebration. The album's controversial artwork, which will remain redacted for the time being due to the extreme content it portrays, fits those themes as well, depicting a volatile, extremist scene undergoing a long overdue queerification, coming out rich and strange, shiny and pink.

The Soft Pink Truth was started in 2001 when legendary UK house producer Matthew Herbert challenged Drew to "make a house record," resulting in the project's slyly funky debut album Do You Party?, which Herbert released on his own Soundslike Records. Daniel has also produced floor-burning remixes for Bjork, Herbert, Grizzly Bear, Dat Politics and many more under The Soft Pink Truth moniker. "Why Do The Heathen Rage?" follows his 2004 release "Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want The Soft Pink Truth?," a collection of electronic interpretations of UK punk and American hardcore songs. As a member of Matmos, Daniel continues to break down established norms of experimental and pop music practice by filtering genres through unique and brilliant conceptual lenses, and has established himself as one of the most individualistic electronic musicians of the past several decades.

Disclaimer: Aesthetics and Politics are neither equivalent nor separable. Black metal fandom all too often entails a tacit endorsement or strategic looking-the-other-way with regards to the racist, anti-Semitic, sexist and homophobic bullshit politics that (still) pervade the scene, on behalf of either escapist fantasy talk, shaky invocations of art as a crypto-religious path to transcendence, or--the oldest cop out in the book--the quietist declaration that "I just like how it sounds." Just as blasphemy both affirms and assaults the sacred powers it invokes and inverts, so too this record celebrates black metal and offers queer critique / mockery / profanation of its ideological morass in equal measure. Mixed emotions about a murky, diverse and self-differential scene are all very well, but, as Barack Obama is so fond of saying at press conferences just before legitimizing drone warfare, let's be clear: No apologies, no excuses, and no escape clauses are hereby offered. Murderers are murderers. No safe space for fascist garbage. The Soft Pink Truth hereby abjures black metal homophobes, racists, and Nazis categorically and absolutely: MAY THIS CURSE BIND! Remember Magne Andreassen!"

    The Sleeping Gods - Thorn

Norwegian progressive extreme metal icons ENSLAVED will release The Sleeping Gods - Thorn compilation via ByNorse Music. A full-length album comprised of rare material from 2010-2011, The Sleeping Gods - Thorn is a unique collection of experimental material connecting with the band's early roots.

The seven tracks comprising The Sleeping Gods - Thorn originally appeared on extremely limited EPs between ENSLAVED's Axioma Ethica Odini and Riitiir full-lengths and were recorded both in Solslottet Studio in Bergen, as well as the band members' own studios and partly in the deep woods of Valevaag on the South Western Coast of Norway. Like the songs themselves, the production is a mix of old and new; high-tech and no-tech - a mix of concepts that have been essential in achieving the signature sound ENSLAVED has become notorious for today. Members Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson co-produced the material together with long-time collaborator Iver Sandøy.

The album includes lyrics sung in Norwegian, English, and Old Norse, with themes centered on mythology and the esoteric side of the runes, as well as contrasting the Norse Ways as a polytheistic belief system to the monotheistic plague of the Big World Religions. The music nods respectfully to the wildly varying deities that make up the pantheon of inspiration for ENSLAVED, both "then" and "now." There are traces of the proto black metal of Bathory, the classic rock and heavy metal of the '70s and '80s, the synthesized and sequenced masters of the '70s, prog-rock, world/Norse folk music, Norwegian black metal of the '90s, modern classical music, goth rock a la Fields Of The Nephilim, and much more.

Tying the package together are the extensive liner notes Kjellson and a beautiful new layout by Costin Chioreanu of Twilight 13 Media (Roadburn Festival, Opeth, Darkthrone, At The Gates, etc.) whose mesmerizing new illustrations display a unique symbiosis between two of our times' most exciting visual and sonic artists.

Circle The Wagons (Out of Stock)

Darkthrone are a legendary name in metal, inspiring countless bands throughout the years as
one of the leaders of the Scandinavian black metal movement in the early 90's, alongside other
greats such as Burzum, Immortal and Mayhem.

In 2010 the unrelenting Norwegian duo delivered a new feast of metal and punk. From their thrash and
death beginnings to their ascension to the pantheon of black metal greats, Darkthrone have always refused to stand still. They continue to embrace and explore their roots and capture the real spirit of sonic greatness on CIRCLE THE WAGONS; recorded by the band themselves at Necrohell II studios.

Darkthrone sail against the tides of trend and disposable metal; uncompromising and defiant as ever - an ideology expanded upon by Fenriz when explaining the meaning behind the title: "The new metal decade starts with our album. It is a message to the Invaders of our metal domain to circle
    their wagons!!!"

With our own brand of heavy metal/speed metal-punk we are a constant ambush on the modern overground
metal traitors. Join us in our fight against instant gratification.... and let's see who stands when the smoke
    clears...

Album by album we gnaw away at the overwhelming mass of so-called raw metal out there - well, the only
time i saw something raw wrapped in plastic was when it was dead meat. And so in the long run, all raw
bands with old raw sound wins - and your plastic paradise instant gratification sound vanishes with time.

White, Black And Transparent Colored Vinyl

'Black Death and Beyond' is a special collector's boxset featuring an in-depth book containing extensive accounts of the band's history and philosophy from both Gylve 'Fenriz' Nagell & Ted 'Nocturno Culto' Skjellum, as well as additional recollections from bass player Dag Nilsen. Numerous other artists and friends along the way give their thoughts on the legends too, plus the book contains a large amount of personal photos from the band archive.

Also included are 3 vinyls featuring Darkthrone's own choice cuts from their illustrious collection of death/black/ & metal/punk classics, presented on white, black, and transparent vinyl.

Fenriz explains the concept behind the track selections: "I never quit my day job; one of the reasons being that I can listen to music on headphones there all the time. To the extent that I rarely listen to music at home anymore, and if I do it's like I can't hear it PROPERLY. At work with headphones is where the details reveal themselves and also which songs I can and can't use in compilations or dj'ing appear quite clearly.
Every time I get/buy a cassette or vinyl I have to transfer them to wav files via a computer programme, then I write a little note to accompany the final burnt disc. But the note first swings by my workplace where I can rate the various songs with a clever underlining-system called THE FENRIZOLATOR. And so passes the days.

Then came the idea to do a Darkthrone book and with it a vast box set. There was talk about 3 compilation discs, one with Death, one with Black and one with our other styles. So be it. But this time I took it upon myself do it PROPERLY. And to do that....well, I had to face my own rating system. Because I also use the F-OLATOR on regular CD's, it took 3 whole days to rate all of our 16 full length albums. Certain discoveries
were made, like the song I think is worst by Darkthrone is HANS SISTE VINTER (Scoring only 12 out of 60 points) and also that The Cult Is Alive is probably our best album - at least it's the one with the highest grades consistently. But I digress. AGGRESSIVE DIGRESSOR!!! Lists were made, and I truly tried to be as honest and fair as possible, Ted was initially going to do this but I think he suddenly saw how monumental
a task it would be, and ended up with - well, what you hold in your hands right now. My "BEST OF" trying to follow both my biased ratings, crystal logic and also personal favours and my fave Ted songs".

primarily those rooted firmly in the spirit of the 80s. 6 tracks long, and every one an
epic in itself, this is undoubtedly Darkthrone's strongest outing of late.

'The Underground Resistance' was written and recorded spring 2010 to summer
2012 at Necrohell 2 studios by the band themselves. The album was mastered by
Jack Control at Enormous Door, Texas USA. Cover artwork also comes courtesy of
the iconic and celebrated artist Jim Fitzpatrick.

"3 songs each, Ted's are flown from the universe of metal with his strongest voice
    ever so far. Songs of mine are torn from the wombs of the riders of rohan of metal;
    safely cradled in 1985 style".

Transilvanian Hunger is Darkthrone's fourth album, originally released in 1994. Written & recorded by Fenriz himself at Necrohell Studio, with Nocturno
Culto later adding vocals, the album is a masterpiece of primitive monotonous black metal inspired by bands such as Von, Bathory & Burzum. 'Transilvanian Hunger' also features lyrical contributions from Varg Vikernes of Burzum.

Too Old Too Cold (Out of Stock)

Darkthrone originally formed in the late 80's as a thrash/death metal act & progressed through a period technical death and doom metal experimentation to become legends of the black metal world & one of the leading bands of the Norwegian scene.

The 'Too Old Too Cold' EP had its original release at the dawn of 2006 and acted as a precursor to the band's triumphant Peaceville comeback album, the revelatory black and roll release, 'The Cult is Alive'. As a showcase for this sleek new incarnation of Darkthrone, and with the band firmly back in control of their sound courtesy of their new Necrohell 2 Studio set-up, 'Too Old Too Cold' showed that the band was here to stay, and lead the way. Commenting back then, Fenriz defined the shift in style as "probably something like MOTORHEAD meeting HELLHAMMER on a CRUST PUNK/ NECROTHRASH gig in '85".

Featuring one of the undeniable highlights of 'The Cult is Alive', the catchy and soaring 'Too Old Too Cold' with its razor-sharp riffs begins proceedings here, followed by the exclusive track 'High on Cold War', featuring a guest appearance by Enslaved's Grutle Kjellson on vocals. Also featured is an alternate rendition of 'Graveyard Slut' plus an unexpected yet perfectly suited cover version of Siouxsie and the Banshees' 'Love in a Void'. This edition includes the bonus track 'Bad Attitude', originally by US punk rockers, Testors.

    Nattestid (Out of Stock)

In 1993, taake mastermind hoest formed the band under the name thule, releasing two demos; Der Vinterstormene Raste in 1993 and 1994's Omfavnet Av Svarte Vinger. Shortly afterwards, thule became taake (meaning 'Fog' in English), a name which better reflected the band's music and the area where hoest was from; the mountains of Bergen, Norway.
the first full-length album, Nattestid..., was originally released in 1999. the album was
written entirely by hoest, who was joined by a session musician, tundra, to perform
bass and drums. It was recorded 1997/98 at the legendary grieghallen Studios (Immortal, Mayhem, gorgoroth) with Pytten.

Nattestid was a stellar introduction to taake's unusual brand of cold and yet surprisingly melodic, at times complex composition. The album featured both grim and clean vocals alongside icy riffs and atmospherics creating a truly dark experience.
The lyrics were written and sung in old Norwegian and with an execution compared to the likes of earlier Darkthrone, Immortal or Satyricon, Nattestid was quickly acclaimed as a classic of Norwegian Black Metal. This edition is presented on 180 gram vinyl with evocative alternate cover art.

Under A Funeral Moon (Out Of Stock)

Under A Funeral Moon, Darkthrone's third album was originally released by Peaceville in 1993.

The album is a bleak reflection of contemporary times; featuring harsh guitar riffage and hateful vocals all underpinned by Fenriz's rightly celebrated tight and complex drum patterns.

    Til Endes (Out of Stock)

After a period of 6 years in the wilderness, Norway's exponents of groove-laden black metal are back with a new album, 'Til Endes'. Undoubtedly the band's strongest work to date, 'Til Endes' explores the dark foreboding corners of the metal spectrum with eerie riffs, grim vocals courtesy of mysterious frontman Gard, and catchy hooks which are so often ignored in the genre.

Expanding upon Khold's staple sound of mid-tempo primitive & heavy black metal, the band's sixth studio release adds an additional aggressive edge to the tracks overall, whilst retaining their use of solely Norwegian lyrics. The album also notably includes a cover of the Sepultura classic, 'Troops of Doom', given the full Khold treatment, and titled 'Dommens Arme'.

'Til Endes' was recorded at Studio Fredman (Amon Amarth, At the Gates, Opeth) in Sweden in June 2014, with the line-up of Gard (vocals/guitar), Sarke (drums), Rinn on guitar & Crowbel on bass.

Khold will be making a special performance at the Brutal Assault festival in August & a new promo video will also soon be revealed.

Khold formed in Oslo in the year 2000, by Gard & Sarke (currently seen in his own, selfnamed act, alongside Darkthrone's Nocturno Culto), as Khold emerged out of the ashes of the cult band Tulus. They have recorded 5 albums to date since their debut 'Masterpiss of Pain' was released on Moonfog Productions, & have successfully toured with bands such as Satyricon & Behemoth in the past.
