    Dark Night Of The Soul

This musical DNA has been in Jimbo Mathus since birth. His father and relatives
were all skilled musicians who filled the house with old folk, country and blues
tunes. By the age of eight, Mathus was joining them on mandolin and by his
teenage years had learned guitar and piano. High school led to playing in punk
and new wave bands, the most notable being Johnny Vomit and the Dry Heaves
and The End, with future Oblivian Jack Yarber. Post high school, Mathus studied
Philosophy at Mississippi State University before leaving to travel around
America. In doing so he worked various jobs, including an influential stint as
a barge tankerman on the mighty Mississippi River. Settling in Chapel Hill,
N.C., he drummed in the cult rock band Metal Flake Mother prior to starting
the Squirrel Nut Zippers. This ahead-of-its-time retro roots band scored a hit
with "Hot" and performed at President Clinton's second Inauguration and the
1996 Summer Olympics. Following the Zippers' split, Mathus worked with such
noted artists such as Buddy Guy and Elvis Costello, and collaborated with North
Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson and Alvin Youngblood Hart in the
South Memphis String Band. He also recorded his own albums (including one
dedicated to his childhood nanny Rosetta Patton, the daughter of Delta blues
    icon Charley Patton).

On most of 'Dark Night's' tracks, Mathus' acoustic guitar is surrounded by
the electric guitar played by his longtime sideman Matt Pierce and pal Eric
"Roscoe" Ambel. (Ambel produced 'White Buffalo' but on 'Dark Night' he focuses
exclusively on his righteous guitar playing.) The album's raw, rock sound arose
from the fact that most of the tracks were recorded live in the studio with
Mathus' band, the Tri-State Coalition, which he found "very liberating way of
doing it." Mathus feels very in synch with his bandmates (keyboardist Eric
Carlton, drummer Ryan Rogers, guitarist Pierce and guest bassist and Drive By
Trucker Matt Patton) since they have played together now for several years.
"The intensity you're hearing on this album," he proclaims, "is the spirit of a
band that is put ting it's shit on the line ."

A special, limited edition split 12 between long time friends, and stalwarts in the new wave of American metal, Junius and Rosetta, has been announced for release courtesy of The Mylene Sheath. Discussed between both bands for years, this collaboration is finally seeing the light of day and finds Junius contributing new song A Day Dark With Night (clocking in at around eight minutes), and Rosetta unleashing TMA-3 (which runs just under ten minutes).

Artwork direction, design and layout for the new release was handled by Mike Wohlberg at the Fat Kid! Illustration (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Pelican, Tombs) and will be strictly limited to 1,000 copies. Both tracks appear on one side of the LP, with an intricate laser etching on the other side. The jackets are printed on 20pt SBS board and packaging includes inserts containing lyrics and liner notes from each band. Each copy of the record will also come with a download card that includes codes for cover songs by each band.

    Deep Night

A raw cry from the dark night of one man's soul. Cloistered away from the popular culture of 1982,
rural Illinois priest Tony Trosley painted a pastoral refraction of early 1970s Laurel Canyon watercolors with this stand-alone set of songs. Openhearted and naively psychedelic, Deep Night was recorded during a single pre-dawn marathon, and mixed live-to-tape in an isolated chapel.

Cobbled together out of local players to help fill out this ethereal soundscape, Trosley's band brought an earnest but bluntly unsophisticated backdrop to his phaser-drenched 12-string guitar. The Sixth Station-named for a grim New Testament tableau in which Veronica washes the tortured face of Jesus-managed to avoid overtly Christian themes in favor of a mystical Humanism that resonates timelessly, and to any sort of listener. This Deep Night is as profound and eerie as the images conjured by its title.

    Saturday Night Sweetheart

More street-grit than surfside, Thee Tsunamis are a rock'n'roll joyride
with Tura Satana at the wheel. On their debut full-length Saturday Night
Sweetheart, the trio (Betsy on guitar, Jenna on bass, and Sharlene on
beats) blend girl-group bubblegum with feral punk, hugging every hairpen
turn of Kim Fowley's twisted, trashbucket heart along the way. With
jagged harmonies over fuzz-crusted pop hooks, theirs is the sound of
Brill Building teen-sploitation with bloodier results. From
heart-in-a-blender tales to drag-race party anthems, these 12 tracks are
as catchy as they are cutting and together they tell a story as old as time:
what the men don't know, the little girls understand. Like Thee Tsunamis'
tape A Goodbad Man Is Hard To Find (2013) and horror-concept EP
Delirium and Dark Waters (2014), Saturday Night Sweetheart (May,
2015) was recorded to tape in the basement studio of Magnetic South
and has all the signature fidelity of a subterranean rock'n'roll
echo-chamber. So play it loud, and hold on to your seat!

    Vega Intl. Night School

While making Neon Indian's third album, Alan Palomo turned a crisis into an opportunity: When his laptop -- which contained demos of his new songs -- was stolen at the end of the Era Extraña tour, he started anew by drawing inspiration from his past. Vega Intl. Night School takes its name and sound from his previous electronic project VEGA and his pet name for his after-dark adventures, conveying the dazzling, fleeting allure of a night out. Era Extraña's crisper beats and textures hinted that Palomo might be headed in a more danceable direction, but on his third album, he finds ways to subvert expectations while remaining true to Neon Indian's essence.

He applies his flair for mood-crafting to a palette of electro, funk, disco, new wave, and reggae, transforming his synth-heavy sound into a love letter to the fabulous keyboard tones of the '70s and '80s: Note the Baroque embellishments to Slumlord's filter-disco and the squiggles that make Street Level sound even more like forgotten Paisley Park brilliance. Prince and Daft Punk are two of the album's biggest influences, not just in sound but in spirit. The way these tracks flow into each other recalls the uninhibited, possibly inebriated way Homework's first few cuts blended into an atmospheric portrait of nightlife, a concept Palomo runs with on Vega Intl. Night School. Sounding like a field recording from an '80s nightclub, Smut! captures the disorienting, intoxicating feel of entering a party that's already in full swing; Techno Clique expresses the anonymity and intimacy of dancing with a stranger, and the luminous synths that close The Glitzy Hive might as well be sunrise peeking through the club's doors. Vega Intl. Night School's more structured songs are so good that it's easy to wish there were more of them

It Comes At Night (Original Soundtrack Album)

It Comes at Night is an upcoming horror film directed and written by Trey Edward Shults (Krisha) and starring Joel Edgerton (Loving). The film follows a man, his wife and son secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world. Their tenuous domestic order is tested with the arrival of a young family seeking refuge from the doom outside. Despite the best intentions of everyone, paranoia boils over as the terrors outside creep ever-closer.

The original score to It Comes at Night was composed by Brian McOmber (Krisha), a former member of acclaimed indie band Dirty Projectors. McOmber's score utilizes synths, lonesome strings and the occasional tribal drum, which conjures a kind of primal darkness in the music that is both foreboding and deeply unsettling. A rising star to keep an ear out for, McOmber delivers a score that will grip you and never let go.

A Meal You Can Shake Hands With In The Dark (Pure Pleasure)

Pete Brown was a Londoner and a veteran of the underground scene. Born in 1940, he first came to prominence as a poet. He was just 14 when his first poem appeared in Evergreen Revue in the US. Then in the early sixties he worked alongside another British poet Mike Horowitz. His direct involvement with rock music came when he was asked to form a songwriting partnership with Jack Bruce to write lyrics for Cream and the partnership proceeded to produce the lyrics for many of their finest songs: Wrapping Paper, I Feel Free, Sunshine Of Your Love and White Room. After the demise of Cream, Brown continued to write with Bruce but also began his own recording career with The Battered Ornaments who included Chris Spedding. After an initial 45, which with its wailing saxes and effective vocals was underrated, the band recorded this album which was a mixture of jazz-rock and blues. Dark Lady, The Old Man and Station Song were among the fine tracks and the latter later got a further airing on the Before Singing Lessons compilation. Station Song and Dark Lady had earlier featured along with Travelling Blues on the ultra-rare promo-only Harvest Sampler in 1969.

Brown then suffered the humiliation of being thrown out of the band the night before they had a Hyde Park gig with The Rolling Stones. Brown's response was to form a new band, Piblokto!

This release breaks the long sides down to four sides of vinyl which enhances the sound quality considerably. Also of interest is that it has been mastered in the same studio at Abbey Road as was the initial release and from the same original analogue tape masters.

    Musicians:

    • Pete Brown (vocal, trumpet)

    • Nisar A. Khan (tenor saxophone)

    • Dick Heckstall-Smith (tenor saxophone)

    • Chris Spedding (guitar)

    • Charlie Hart (organ)

    • Butch Porter (bass)

    • Rob Tait (drums)

    • Pete Bailey (conga)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

To imagine a metal world without Norway´s legendary DIMMU BORGIR, seems quite unfathomable. Founded in 1993 by Shagrath, Silenoz and Tjodalv, the Oslo trio infernale quickly gained momentum in the underground scene with their debut EP »Inn I Evighetens Mørke«. The band released two albums, »For All Tid« (1994) and »Stormblåst« (1996) before they signed to Nuclear Blast and released »Enthrone Darkness Triumphant« (1997). This was a major step forwards for the band, and an album that helped change the way the world acknowledged extreme metal in a massive way.

DIMMU BORGIR might have started as a pitch-black pioneer of the Norwegian black metal scene, but quickly evolved into a hybrid of a beast, incorporating symphonic elements and other musical influences where few other bands dared to wander.

The band evolved, both musically and lineup-wise, over the years, and DIMMU BORGIR increased their status as a massive audience-draw with classic albums like »Spiritual Black Dimensions« (1999), »Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia« (2001) and »Death Cult Armageddon« (2003). The band has headlined tours and performed on big festivals worldwide, and toured together with non-typical peers as KORN, DEVILDRIVER and JUDAS PRIEST, to mention a few.

After a re-recording of the classic »Stormblåst« album in 2005, entitled »Stormblåst MMV«, and the critically acclaimed »In Sorte Diaboli« (2007) and »Abrahadabra« (2010), both albums that were musically challenging both the band and their audience, DIMMU BORGIR topped it all with a sold-out performance in their hometown of Oslo, performing with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and a full-scale choir.

The band has been on a hiatus for some years, but last year, they announced that the cooperation with Nuclear Blast Records was extended, and the first release in 2017 will be the highly anticipated 2xLP of this magnificent show, »Forces Of The Northern Night«.

The band is also working on a brand new studio effort, and one can only wonder what kind of dark sorcery the band has in store for us this time around. One thing is certain: it won´t be for the faint-hearted.

Featuring some of the best songs he's ever written, Southern Nights was Allen Toussaint's 1975 swing for the fences attempt at an all out masterpiece. Somewhat of a concept album, with reoccurring instrumental themes popping up between songs, this album spawned at least two hits for other artists. The title track (minus the Lennonesque rotary speaker vocal effect) was a giant hit for Glen Campbell, while What Do You Want The Girl To Do? was one of several singles on Boz Skaggs' 1976 smash Silk Degrees and was also recorded by Bonnie Raitt. 180 Gram Clear Vinyl

This album was spawned by three coinciding events -- the need to acknowledge the death of band co-founder Brian Jones (whose epitaph graces the inside cover) in July of 1969; the need to get Honky Tonk Women, then a huge hit single, onto an LP; and to fill the ten-month gap since the release of Beggars Banquet and get an album with built-in appeal into stores ahead of the Stones' first American tour in three years. The fact that the Stones had amassed a sufficient number of hits since their last greatest-hits compilation in early 1966 (Big Hits: High Tide and Green Grass) made this a no-brainer, and its song lineup was as potent at the time as any compilation of hit singles by any artist. From the group's excursions into fey psychedelia (Paint It, Black, Ruby Tuesday, She's a Rainbow, Dandelion), space rock (2000 Light Years From Home), punk decadence (Mother's Little Helper), and back to straight-ahead rock & roll (Jumpin' Jack Flash), some of it with a topical edge (Street Fighting Man), it's all incredibly potent, though also redundant to the extent that Ruby Tuesday and Let's Spend the Night Together had previously appeared on two U.S. albums. The presence of Honky Tonk Women propelled it to gold record status upon release on both sides of the Atlantic, although the simultaneously released British version (long out of print, except as a bootleg CD) is different and more confusing, but also more diverse and rewarding musically than the American version. Both this album and Big Hits: High Tide and Green Grass have been supplanted by Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks, but are still handy in their tight respective focuses.

21 Tracks Spread Out Over Three High-quality, 180 Gram Vinyl LPs. Lyrics To All Of The Songs, A New Essay From Bruce Springsteen And Never-before-seen Photographs From The "Darkness" Sessions Are Also Included

Darkness was my 'samurai' record, Springsteen writes, stripped to the frame and ready to rumble." But the music that got left behind was substantial. For the first time, fans will have access to 21 previously-unreleased songs from the Darkness recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, perhaps could have/should have been released after Born To Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness on the Edge of Town became.

Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of Racing in the Street, the never-before-released original recordings of Because the Night, Fire, and Rendezvous, the supreme pop opus Someday (We'll Be Together), the hilarious Ain't Good Enough for You, the superb soul-based vocal performance on The Broken Hearted, the utterly haunting Breakaway, and the now finally released, fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song, The Promise. All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator, Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, There isn't a weak card in this deck. The Promise is simply a great listening experience.

American Epic: The Best of Blind Willie Johnson

Texas slide guitarist and gospel bluesman Blind Willie Johnson recorded only 30 songs over the course of his life as a preacher and street performer. Even so, the savvy combination of his gritty and powerful "chest voice" singing style coupled with his mastery of slide guitar (some report he regularly used a knife as a slide) has given him a notably influential legacy, specifically with later bluesmen Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson. His tune "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground" was selected for Carl Sagan's Voyager probe Golden Record, the Library of Congress as well as the National Recording Registry.

    Love This Giant

Recorded over two years largely at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ, the album is a collaboration in the truest sense of the word, with Byrne and St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) co-writing ten of the album's twelve tracks, and each artist penning one song individually. The album centers around an explosive brass band and is propelled by John Congleton's drum programming!

There was no delineating what the roles were, explains Clark of the recording. It's a collaboration I'm truly proud of. The duo also split lyrical and vocal duties on the record, which despite eschewing a traditional guitar/bass/drums lineup in favor of idiosyncratic horn arrangements, presents itself as infectious and modern hook-laden rock.

Byrne and Clark met in 2009 at the 'Dark Was the Night' benefit at Radio City Music Hall and were approached shortly after by the Housing Works Bookstore to collaborate on a night of music. They began composing remotely, trading song ideas and structures online while Clark toured and it quickly became apparent that they had more than just one night of music in them!!

Byrne performed with Clark at her 'American Songbook' show at Lincoln Center in 2010, and Clark contributed vocals to Byrne's Here Lies Love album, released the same year.

    Riceboy Sleeps

Known primarily for his haunting falsetto and other-worldly presence as the singer in Sigur Ros, Jon Thor Birgisson has, together with his partner Alex Somers, been exhibiting artwork and staging exhibitions under the name Riceboy Sleeps for two or three years now, including the release of a limited edition picture book. A couple of months back the early fruits of the musical side of this collaboration surfaced in physical form for the first time, with the track Happiness, on the exemplary Dark Was The Night Red Hot compilation.

Riceboy Sleeps is human in a profound and verging-on spiritual way. It says nothing, literally, and yet living through its 68-minutes you emerge feeling much has been revealed. Its slowly evolving abstract landscapes are both edifying and life-affirming. The record works as a whole, and exists in a contemplative dream-state, unconstrained and mesmeric, seemingly outside time. The record, however, is more active than its apparent antecedents in the ambient output of Brian Eno, and other deliberately low-impact works. Riceboy Sleeps is awash with both tension and stimuli, as well as being frequently, and stunningly, beautiful.

Played solely on acoustic instruments in Iceland and featuring long-time string collaborators Amiina, as well as the Kopavogsdaetur choir, Riceboy Sleeps has a suitably organic feel. The full-length Riceboy Sleeps album (the name having migrated from artist moniker to album title) is set to subtly redefine expectations of slow and elegiac instrumental music in 2009.

    A Glorious Dawn (Cosmos Remixed)

Third Man Records is over the moon to announce the 7-inch release of 'A Glorious Dawn' on November 9th.

'A Glorious Dawn' is a moving arrangement of Carl Sagans sagacious words culled from his magnificent 'Cosmos' series. The piece initially gained recognition when composer John Boswell uploaded to YouTube his remixed Sagan dialogue edited, Auto-Tuned and put to a beat and coupled with a guest appearance by Stephen Hawking. At well over one million views, this is a project that goes far-beyond the buzz of 'Internet phenomenon.'

The release is timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Sagans birth. Also happening that day is a reception in United States Congress with speeches by senators, NASA officials and assorted scientists, all hosted by the Planetary Society, which was co-founded by Sagan.

The one-sided single features a very special etching on the flipside. Reproduced from the original artwork, the etching copies the etching included with the Voyager Golden Record, set off into space in 1977 as the most elaborate message-in-a-bottle idea ever imagined. With its inclusion of Blind Willie Johnsons 'Dark Was The Night' it goes without saying that the Voyager Golden Record is one of Third Mans favorite releases of all-time.

Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The NIght)

With his reintroduction to the pop world behind him, renowned singer-songwriter Yusuf (the artist known as Cat Stevens) is ready to once again strike up an intimate relationship with his audience. After retreating from the pop stage following classic '70s multi-platinum albums such as Tea For The Tillerman and Teaser And The Firecat and acclaimed hits such as Wild World, Peace Train, Moonshadow, Morning Has Broken and Father And Son, Yusuf returned in late 2006 with his first pop album in 28 years. Now he's back again with a second album, Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The Night).

I was absent from my audience for so long, Yusuf says, people thought another album would never come. The 2006 album, An Other Cup, was a surprise. With this new album, the distance is much less. I'm back to doing what I do best, painting pictures with music and storytelling on a very human, personal, intuitive level through lyrics and song, so I can help people feel good again. I guess in some ways the new album picks up where the Cat Stevens the public knows left off.

The album, Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The Night), was produced by the now singularly named Yusuf with help from Martin Terefe (James Morrison, Jason Mraz, Martha Wainwright), and recorded around the world. Guests include Morrison, Michelle Branch and Holly Williams (granddaughter of Hank Williams, Sr.).

The new album is a response to the way An Other Cup was received, Yusuf explains. Fans said they wanted to hear more of me with a guitar. So, this album is much more folk-tale oriented. Also, apart from one track, all of it was recorded live. I listened to a lot of' '70s L.A. music, such as Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Carole King, and it inspired me to go back into that intimate style of recording. The songs are somewhat autobiographical but abstract enough so everyone can relate to them and connect them to their own lives.

The title track, Roadsinger, unfolds the tale of an outcast who revisits his old hometown; along the empty street a child peeks from behind a store window and gives an innocent smile out of the shadows of prejudice. The theme of a journey has always been big with me, says Yusuf. A journey that was unexpectedly cut short in 2004 was when Yusuf was flying from his London home to Washington, D.C., en route to a meeting with Dolly Parton, who had recorded Peace Train several years earlier and wanted Yusuf to play guitar on her cover of his Where Do the Children Play. The incident that made headlines was resolved in 2006 and Yusuf's new song Boots and Sand resulted.

There are plenty people who sing, but not enough who have walked far from their block, he says. I embraced an unexpected spiritual path that was confusing for many (converting to Islam in 1977). Sadly, I'm still often misunderstood. Some people want to put me into their own one-sided view, but I don't fit those limitations. My world is still borderless and wide. The removal of conflict and establishment of peace has always been my global objective. It's a shame that lot of people, including some Muslims, overlook the name Islam, which actually comes from the word 'Peace' in Arabic.

The forthcoming album also showcases some songs from his upcoming musical Moonshadow. The story takes place on a planet of perpetual night where only the moon's shine lights the darkness; it is about a boy's meeting with his Moonshadow and the adventures they share in search for the a world of the sunlight and happiness. As well as having many new songs, the surrealistic musical, Moonshadow also weaves classic songs from his past, including Morning Has Broken, Wild World and The First Cut Is The Deepest.

Yusuf's return to his guitar came about when his teenage artist-musician son, Muhammad (aka Yoriyos), brought one home again. One morning, Yusuf was alone in the lounge when he looked over and felt a draw of curiosity overtake him. He slowly picked it up. I put my fingers on the fretboard to make a 'C' chord, he remembers, and surprised myself, It's still there! It felt right. So I started playing again. On the forthcoming album, Yusuf even plays electric guitar on a couple of tracks, along with keyboards. This part of my career feels similar in one sense to when I began, Yusuf reflects. I had to get past the songs on Mona Bone Jakon before I could move on to Tea For The Tillerman, etc. This time around it was the same story: I laid the groundwork with my debut album, An Other Cup, which inspired a great new collection of songs and scribblings. I had quite a few in my back pocket and again it was my son who sparked the next step. He said, 'Isn't it time to start recording a new album?' And it was.

    Bitte Orca

Bitte Orca is the highly anticipated follow up album to 2007's critically acclaimed, Rise Above, and the band's Domino debut. David Longstreth formed the Dirty Projectors in 2002 and the band now consists of core member Amber Coffman, Brian Mcomber, Angel Deradoorian and Longstreth. Recorded in the fall of 2008 in Portland, OR and Brooklyn, NY, Bitte Orca is the band's fifth and most successful album.

From the bright curtain-raising opener Cannibal Resource to the stunning off-kilter Temecula Sunrise and Useful Chamber's ornate harmonies, Bitte Orca contains the Projectors' best individual songs to date. It's a big rock album by design and the results are both universal and singular. Stillness Is The Move and Two Doves were written specifically for the voices and temperaments of Coffman and Derardoorian, who take solo turns respectively. While Coffman's Stillness Is The Move is an R&B anthem, Deradoorian's Two Doves is stringed and elegantly spare.

Bitte Orca's idiosyncratic and sincere take on popular music is reminiscent of David Byrne with whom the Dirty Projectors collaborated on Knotty Pine for the 2009 compilation Dark Was The Night. In many ways, Longstreth could be seen as this generation's answer to Byrne, a distinctive torchbearer of labyrinthine song arrangements that go down easy.

Beak & Claw (Discontinued) (On Sale)

Comes with a digital download card! Stranger things have happened, but rarely do they make such beautiful music. The three esses that comprise the enigmatically titled s / s / s are as follows: Sufjan Stevens, he of the Fifty States Project and various baroque folk-pop opuses; Serengeti, the wry-witted rapper known for in-depth on-record character studies; and Son Lux, silken-voiced singer, studio wizard and singular beatsmith. The project's roots reach back to 2009's Dark Was the Night compilation, where Stevens and Geti met over a Buck 65 remix of a song written by psych-folkie Castanets. Continuing in the spirit of (unlikely) collaboration, the pair passed beats and raps back and forth, eventually enlisting Son Lux to dream Beak and Claw into fruition.

While this momentous EP comprises a mere four songs, each covers an immense stretch of sonic territory and emotional range. At six minutes, "Museum Day" may be the most adventurous and also the most satisfying, opening with a swath of AutoTuned heartache courtesy of Stevens, cresting with the darkly detailed raps of Geti, and closing in a hail of crashing cymbals, orchestral glitch and haunted coos from Son Lux. "Beyond Any Doubt" exchanges that taut splendor for deeper grooves whose farthest-out moments bring to mind Shabazz Palaces' cracked futurisms, albeit spiked with a falsetto'd pop hook. Fuzzy bass and industrial clang crash into lines about unrealized escapism and unpaid bills. Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond lends "If This Is Real" its Andrews Sister-like chorus, an immaculate contrast to the aural chaos that eventually overtakes the song. Meanwhile, Doseone (Subtle, Themselves) lends a similar buoyancy to "Octomom," an electrospackled, mostly spoken piece that plays like a Laurie Anderson track for the reality television generation (also featuring jaw harp and harmonica by Ohio folk vet Hal Walker). Because of its subject matter, this final song goes a long way to illustrating Beak and Claw's strange magic and, ultimately, why s / s / s works at all. Geti's humor and humanity are matched by playfulness and poignancy every step of the way. In the end, sublime confluence prevails.

Ry Cooder Is A Master Sonic Archeologist And Cultural Historian On Boomer's Story: Guitarist Pays Tribute To The Past And Updates Music For Future On Rustic Record Steeped In Folk, Blues, And Soul

Mastered From The Original Master Tapes, Pressed At RTI, And Strictly Limited To 3000 Numbered Copies: Mobile Fidelity 180g LP Of Boomer's Story Sounds Fantastic With Vibrant Textures

Ry Cooder's development as a peerless musician capable of grasping virtually any style began with his time spent with Taj Mahal and Captain Beefheart, but for all intents and purposes reaches epic proportions on Boomer's Story. With two ambitious albeit uneven studio albums behind him, the California native plunged into roles that still define him today - that of sonic archaeologist and cultural historian, shaping his 1972 Reprise effort with enlightened selections carved into the bedrock of America's folk, blues, and soul landscapes. Inspired, virtuosic, and poignant, Boomer's Story endures as a ravishing portrait of inspired translation and inventive craftsmanship that after years of neglect finally boasts sonics deserving of the performances.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 3000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP of Cooder's breakout teems with natural tones, front-to-back imaging, and vintage tube warmth. Boomer's Story benefits from vibrant textures and organic openness, two prized traits that come to fore with breathtaking realism on this analog reissue. Details ranging from the audible resonance of the drum skins, drifting reverb on the guitar, and the inner cavity of the piano take up residence on deep-black soundstages. Individual notes appear and recede with lifelike decay. Cooder and company sound as if they're in the room, playing in real time with one another. This record has never been more dynamic or involving.

Having initiated his self-taught learning of customs established by the likes of Josh White, Woody Guthrie, Charlie Johnson, and Robert Johnson as early as age four, and grown up a son of parents obsessed with Folkways Records, Cooder never suffers from the retro rehash fakery plaguing countless contemporary revivalists. A true original, the guitarist simultaneously pays tribute to the past and updates it for the future. Boomer's Story brims with traditional tunes (the title track, Good Morning Mr. Railroad Man), classic blues (Ax Sweet Mama, Cherry Ball Blues), and World War II standards (Comin' in on a Wing and a Prayer).

A spellbinding blend of personality, respect, and innovation grace every song. Evoking the timeless rusticism and weird, old America vibe of Bob Dylan and the Band's Basement Tapes, Boomer's Story unfolds with a relaxed ease and back-porch chemistry underlined by the musicians' unpretentious demeanors and potent abilities. Drummer Jim Keltner, percussionist Milt Holland, and bassist Jim Dickinson (also a producer) are among the cast fleshing out Cooder's visions. The headliner also welcomes country-blues legend Sleepy John Estes to sing on his own President Kennedy and leans on pianist Randy Newman to help him transform the normally bellicose Rally 'Round the Flag into a patient, mournful protest.

Cooder attains equally meaningful, emotional results on a definitive wordless interpretation of the staple soul ballad The Dark End of the Street, expressing unfathomable depths of regret and longing via slide-guitar work that draws a line back to Blind Willie McTell's immortal spiritual Dark Was the Night - a song Cooder called the most transcendent piece in all American music. Indeed, the degree of interplay attained by twinkling keys, rambling beats, brass accents, and dazzling guitar lines - also finger-picked and strummed - on Boomer's Story breathes with a rare air increasingly endangered in an era of on-demand immediacy and auto-tuned imitation. This, as it's said, is the real deal.

    Quebec

Quebec is the 8th album by Ween, released on August 5, 2003 on Sanctuary Records. It was the first album released after the band's contract with Elektra expired, and marked its return to independent labels. The album on a whole is comparable to Chocolate and Cheese or their first album GodWeenSatan in that not one single mood or theme can describe it, unlike their country record 12 Golden Country Greats, their nautically-themed The Mollusk, their Beatlesque pop album White Pepper, the dark and murky The Pod and the cheerful psychedelic Pure Guava.

The song It's Gonna Be a Long Night is featured in the game 'Tony Hawks Underground 2'. *The music video for Transdermal Celebration was animated by well known Disney animator Adam Phillips.

Music critic Mark Prindle named Quebec the best album of the 2000's.

The history of the ever mighty Rush goes back to 1968 when the group first got together, but it was not until 1974 that the band proper with Neal Peart joining Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson to make for the line-up we have known and loved ever since came to the fore.

Peart joined just two weeks before Rushs first US tour and it was during this American jaunt that the guys played the infamous Agora Ballroom, Cleveland - a venue at which the group would go onto play numerous more shows during their formative years.

At their 1974 booking however, radio station WMMS radio was on hand to broadcast the whole event across the airwaves and thus make this particular gig a somewhat notorious event as well as being Rushs very first radio broadcast

The set played by the group that hot August evening in Americas dark industrial underbelly, includes songs from their debut album, Rush, and features two early versions of cuts from their sophomore record, Fly by Night

The show also contained a cover of Larry Williams Bad Boy a 1950s rocker and no mistake - plus incredibly, two excellent tracks that have never been released on any previous Rush release; the super-rare Fancy Dancer and Garden Road, both composed in their very earliest incarnation before Neal Peart was on board

The package is completed by three bonus tracks from their second US broadcast, back at the ABC a year later, and again courtesy of their by then long time champions, WMMR Cleveland

All three songs from the 75 set originated on Fly By Night
