    Light Science

For nearly thirteen years Christopher Tignor lived in the 3-story commercial space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn where he conceived and practiced with his band Slow Six. In 2008, thanks to a tipped off fire marshal, a move was inevitable, and the walls had to come down. Drastic measures would be necessary in order to keep making music on his own terms, living completely immersed in his studio and practice space. Step one was relocating to the Mott Haven neighborhood of The Bronx. Far removed from an overwhelming hipster scene he had never connected with, he found himself surrounded by the working-class grit and intensity typically associated with The South Bronx. The new musical landscape Wires Under Tension creates uncannily echoes this transition.

Charged with the desolation of a Mad Max dystopia, the songs on Wires Under Tension's debut Light Science form a narrative in motion from lightness to darkness. The band's name reflects the duo's ongoing struggle to balance this tension as they wrestle with an unpredictable and unforgiving machine of their own making. Wordless voices of the horns and violin feel like lightning riding a stormy sea of drums and drones. That lightning illuminates the duo's muscular rhythms, formidable dynamic, and unique musicianship. As they beckon us into their storm, they seem to effortlessly sidestep the cliches found in much of today's instrumental music, delivering exciting and mysterious gems from their unique netherworld.

    Changing Light

On her fifth solo album, Mirah breaks it down and builds it back up
again with the street smarts that only years behind the wheel of
love can inspire.  Ready with the maps and driven to the rhythms
on the radio dial, Changing Light's ten songs carry us from
heartbreak to wholeness and all the places in between.

Uprooted from her home after a scorching break-up, Mirah spent
four years rambling and recording. Tracks were laid down in almost
two dozen houses and apartments - from the Northwest to
Southern California to the East Coast. Sparse demos were
recorded with co-producer Christopher Doulgeris in Portland and
Los Angeles. Embellishments were then added by a slew of friends
and collaborators, including Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Mary
Timony, Emily Wells, and Heather McEntire (Mount Moriah). In
Philadelphia, Mirah and her sister Emily Zeitlyn (Divers) penned
"LC," an homage to childhood inspiration Leonard Cohen.
Seattle-based composer Jherek Bischoff drew up intricate string
arrangements which were recorded in the living rooms of each
individual player. And Tune-Yards producer Eli Crews
co-produced several tracks with Mirah in her new hometown of
    Brooklyn, New York.

Changing Light's reassuring compass is found in Mirah's
shimmering vocals and incisive descriptions.  There is yearning
("Gold Rush" and "Fleetfoot Ghost") and hot anger ("Goat
Shepherd"), but no shortage of lyrical and musical playfulness.
Whether it be the T. Rex-inspired rough edges of "Radiomind,"
the rollicking lo-fi bang-and-pop of "Goat Shepherd," or the lush
pop balladry of "Turned the Heat Off," the album corrals string
sections and vintage synths with horns, a multitude of guitar tones
and overdriven drums. With calm and clamor, Mirah brings us all
closer together through her universal honesty and occasional use
    of the vocoder.

"It's a break-up record. It has some moments of darkness, some
twists and turns , but ultimately, there's a resolution," says Mirah.
So much can happen in four years, even forgiveness"

While Mirah has been making independent pop records for well
over a decade, Changing Light is the debut release on her new
    imprint, Absolute Magnitude Recordings.

    The Blinding Dark

Long running and beloved Swedish Electronic act Covenant returns with its most diverse album to date.

We all have a blind spot. A place inside ourselves that we cannot see. We know it like we know about dark matter & black holes: the world makes no sense without it. It's here that we find Covenant on The Blinding Dark. In the electronic rhythms, so like heart beats. In synthetic sound, full of life, in those moments where the blinding dark slowly shifts into blinding light and back again.

    Wine Dark Sea

Over the span of her career, Jolie Holland has knotted together a century of American
song-jazz, blues, soul, rock and roll-into some stew that is impossible to categorize
with any conventional critical terminology. She thrives on the red hot center of a
musical composition, in all its strange and brutal detail. Note how easily the line "I've
been taken outside and I've been brutalized" trips off her tongue in Joe Tex's "The Love
You Save." Which brings us to the new album Wine Dark Sea, coming May 20th from
ANTI-. Astute listeners to Holland's work can recognize how her writing over the years
has deepened, matured, become the songwriting of a wise, worldly adult, not just of a
rambler across the American latitudes, but to understand this is still no preparation for
the sonic assault, the unprecedented confidence and merciless brilliance of Wine Dark
Sea which yokes the New York underground to American song in a way that has rarely
been attempted since White Light/White Heat by the Velvet Underground. Two drummers, sometimes as many as three or four electric guitars, horns of a sort that come
out of free jazz and the No Wave scene as much as they come from soul music, and a
refreshing need, on Holland's part, to sing out at the extreme of her range, above the
squalling insatiable lullaby of the thing. Wine Dark Sea is the album of a lifetime, with
a lifetime of work in it.

    Light Information (Pre-Order)

Nobody cared about their old heads, because the new ones work just fine now, don't they?.... they have the same size mouth and eyes.

The song Old Heads is a sci-fi space anthem to technology that constantly replaces itself, proving both necessary and unnecessary at the same time. It's also a jangly pop gem, a trip through the fantastical that is ultimately warm and relatable. This remarkable coexistence is one of many achievements of Chad VanGaalen's Light Information, his sixth record on Sub Pop.

For an album that's about not feeling comfortable with really anything, as VanGaalen says, Light Information is nonetheless a vivid, welcoming journey through future worlds and relentless memories. The rich soundscapes and sometimes jarring imagery could only come from the mind of a creative polymath--an accomplished visual artist, animator, director, and producer,VanGaalen has scored television shows, designed puppet characters for Adult Swim, directed videos for Shabazz Palaces, Strand of Oaks,METZ, Dan Deacon, and The Head and the Heart, and produced records for Women, Alvvays, and others.

While alienation has always been a theme of VanGaalen's music,Light Information draws on a new kind of wisdom--and anxiety--gained as he watches his kids growing up. Being a parent has given me a sort of alternate perspective, worrying about exposure to a new type of consciousness that's happening through the internet, he says. Throughout the dark-wave reverb of Light Information are stories of paranoia, disembodiment, and isolation--but there's also playfulness, empathy, and intimacy.

The product of six years' work, going back even before 2014's Shrink Dust, Light Information emerged from the experimental instruments that fill VanGaalen's Calgary garage studio. As always, VanGaalen wrote, played, and produced all of the music on Light Information(save Ryan Bourne's bass part on Mystery Elementals and vocals onStatic Shape from his young daughters Ezzy and Pip), and designed the cover art.

    Range Of Light

    S. Carey's chosen musical expression is a hugely beatific, restorative panorama of beauty - perfect given how
landscape and the wonder of nature inspire much of Carey's imagery. His new album Range of Light - the
follow-up to his 2010 debut All We Grow-takes its title from the name that 19th century naturalist John Muir
    - Carey's hero - gave to California's Sierra Nevada, and follows suit with a dazzling array of musical light and
shade, drawn from Carey's love of jazz, modern classical and Americana. Like a weathered mountain range
changing shadow form and color, or the ebb and flow of a river's current, his music is simultaneously restful
and rhythmic, complex and simple, and always evolving.

"My music has specific connections to nature and place, my surroundings, and my experiences," says Carey. I
travelled the Sierra Nevada area many times as a boy, fishing small mountain streams, hiking to the top of'half
dome', exploring the Redwood groves at Wawona, in awe of the Yosemite Valley. The term,'Range of Light',to
me, denotes the spectrum of light and dark a person can have in their life - peaks and valleys of happiness,
sorrow, challenges and growth - for me most recently and more specifically: marriage, having a baby, and
maintaining a spiritual connection to nature, place, friends and family as an adult."

While he studied classical percussion and piano at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, Carey imbibed
rhythmic minimalists such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Immediately after graduating in 2007, he caught
wind that Eau Claire resident Justin Vernon was forming a band to take his For Emma, Forever Ago opus on
the road. Carey learnt the drum and vocal parts for the album, rehearsed with Vernon, and has been a mainstay
of the Bon Iver live band ever since.

While on tour with Bon Iver, Carey developed his own song writing ambitions, and after many less than
frequent recording sessions between tours, released All We Grow in 2010. Those nine songs sat between a
folk/modern classical hybrid and rarefied jazz climes. Carey's warm melodic nuances, reflected in the lush
folds of his singing, added to the mutable percussive syncopations of his instrumentation.

Range of Light incorporates elements of his previous work, but also amplifies Carey's percussive proclivities,
and is altogether more developed than its predecessors, with more input on the performance and even
composition side from the band of musicians and best friends he assembled originally to bring All We Grow
to life in the live setting. "Therewere times during recording sessions when there were three percussionists, all
with different styles and fortes, playing at once, adding different textures."

From the flurry of violins over a circular rhythm in 'Crown The Pines' and the beautiful cries of 'Alpenglow',
to the pensive depths of songs like 'Fire-scene' and 'The Dome', Range of Light is a still life of an artist in this
particular stage of his life; a stage that has been met with the highest of peaks and the lowest of depths all
within the range each of us treads through.

    Cherish The Light Years

Recorded with Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Cold Caves second album is a tour-de-force of pounding synths and soaring romantic melody. It manages to unite Power, Corruption and Lies-era New Order, late 70s Scott Walker, and the dark stadium pop of mid-period Depeche Mode, with the sensibilities of artists like LCD Soundsystem and The National. Drawing from all these influences, bandleader Wesley Eisold has crafted a tightly wrought, ambitious love letter to New York City. With his deep vocals fully to the fore on every track, Cherish The Light Years is a remarkable progression from 2008s Love Comes Close.

Eisold is backed by diverse associates: Dominick Fernow (Prurient) on electronics, Jennifer Clavin (Mika Miko) on backing vocal and synthesizer, guitarists Tonie Joy (Moss Icon, Universal Order of Armageddon), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Sean Martin (Hatebreed), bassists Daryl Palumbo (Glassjaw) and Matt Sweeney (Chavez) and drummer Guy Licata (Hercules and Love Affair).

    Black Light Syndrome (Awaiting Repress)

This power trio has famous roots, and they've brought it all together masterfully. First cut The Sun Road starts off like a tune off of David Gilmour's first solo album and then vanishes into a driving, power-chorded surge of soulful rock. Next, Dark Corners is a massive rocker that pulls you under its powerful whirlpool of guitar/bass/drum frenzy. Stevens tortures the guitar into absolute submission without any predictable riffs. Levin looms everywhere, and Bozzio flows in a polyrhythmic jungle. Fine interactive tension and execution everywhere. This goes way beyond King Crimson's Red days.

Duende opens with flamenco guitar firebursts, and slowly builds into a decent Spanish-flavored piece. Not my favorite, but well done. The title cut, Black Light Syndrome, is obviously a play on Bozzio Levin Stevens. It is a slower-paced dirge and filled to the brim with a variety of well-executed riffs, basslines, and drum tech.
Falling in Circles is an early Floydscape dotted with Ronnie Montrose leads, a ballad of driving determination and resolve. Floods of Satriani, Wishbone Ash, Alvin Lee, Fripp, Buck Dharma, and even that Duane Allman tone.

Book of Hours took me right back to Wheels of Fire's Pressed Rat and Warthog, rainy-day dreamy afternoons with a fresh pot of designer coffee. Levin, Bozzio, and Stevens play off of one another precisely as one mind.

On the last cut, Chaos/Control, you hear that E7 breakdown from Hendrix's Midnight on War Heroes, and then a jazzy boogie in classic Frank Marino style is laid down. Stevens is a guitarist with a wide range of dynamics.

    Lawless Darkness

Watain have once more created an epic masterpiece, which celebrates the eclipse of the light. Lawless Darkness amalgamates severe blackness with an uncanny knack for eerie melodies and a harsh beauty of the darkest kind, which even attracted Carl McCoy of Fields of the Nephilim to add his vocals in a stunning guest performance.

A special, limited edition split 12 between long time friends, and stalwarts in the new wave of American metal, Junius and Rosetta, has been announced for release courtesy of The Mylene Sheath. Discussed between both bands for years, this collaboration is finally seeing the light of day and finds Junius contributing new song A Day Dark With Night (clocking in at around eight minutes), and Rosetta unleashing TMA-3 (which runs just under ten minutes).

Artwork direction, design and layout for the new release was handled by Mike Wohlberg at the Fat Kid! Illustration (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Pelican, Tombs) and will be strictly limited to 1,000 copies. Both tracks appear on one side of the LP, with an intricate laser etching on the other side. The jackets are printed on 20pt SBS board and packaging includes inserts containing lyrics and liner notes from each band. Marks The 15th Anniversary Of The Band, Founded And Led By Efrim Menuck Of Godspeed You! Black Emperor

First New SMZ Full Length Since GYBE's Return To Action In 2011

Recorded In Quebec By Greg Norman (electrical Audio)

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (SMZ) has traced a barbed-wire arc of
genre-defying protest music since its inception in 1999. Formed by Efrim Menuck, with
Thierry Amar and Sophie Trudeau, the initial iteration of the band was a predominantly
instrumental trio that forged a more intimate and ragged chamber-punk than Godspeed
You! Black Emperor, in which group all three founding SMZ members also played (and
continue to play). Through seven albums from 2000-2010, SMZ expanded its line-up and
shifted towards an increasing use of lead and group vocals, with Menuck penning politically charged lyrics to anchor long-form multi-movement compositions that juxtaposed electrified
guitars against a 4-piece string section of violins, cello and contrabass.

Most recently, SMZ has pared back to five players, with Menuck's massive spectrum spanning electric guitar sound emerging as the spine around which two violins, bass (now
more often electric than acoustic) and drums are deployed. SMZ have managed a handful
of short tours in the past couple of years (in the gaps between GYBE commitments) and
as anyone who has seen the band in its recent incarnation can attest, their current sound
is more honed, laser-guided and bone-rattling than ever, melding hardcore, blues, garage
and dark metal influences that have nothing to do with anything so quaint as "post-rock"
(a tag the group has always and rightly rejected).

Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything is the first definitive document of
the band's newfound sound and style as a quintet. It's also their first single LP-length
work since the band's debut record as a trio almost 15 years ago, and features road tested pummeling rock-outs "Fuck Off Get Free (For The Island Of MontrÉal)", "Take
Away These Early Grave Blues" and "What We Loved Was Not Enough" alongside the
previously unheard lullabyes/minuets "Little Ones Run" and "Rains Thru The Roof At Thee
Grande Ballroom (For Capital Steeze)" and the album centerpiece "Austerity Blues" with
its closing lyric "Lord let my son live long enough to see that mountain torn down"
sung in varying incarnations throughout the second half of this 14-minute epic.

This lyric in many ways encapsulates Menuck's unflinching take on a world replete with
shabbiness, greed and injustice, seen through the lens of parenthood, mortality, endurance
and defiance. There are few other musicians who deliver social critique with the courage
and honesty of lines like "All our cities gonna burn / All our bridges gonna snap / All our
pennies gonna rot / Lightning roll across our tracks / All our children gonna die". Feel-good
music this is not; but neither can it reductively be tagged apocalyptic or world-weary.
Fuck Off Get Free rages with scorn and with hope, utterly passionate but pointedly
unromantic. Thee Silver Mt. Zion once again demonstrates, like few other bands working
today, that there is much to fight for and against, and plenty more fight songs to sing.

    Rays of Darkness

"One of the most distinctive bands of
    the 21st Century." - Pitchfork

"MONO have now well and truly
sealed their place in the pantheon of
    rock history." - Rock Sound

When MONO began in 1999, they set out with a simple mission:
From bliss to bludgeon, no matter how long or winding the path
may be. Their debut album, Under The Pipal Tree, outlined that
mission in twisted, psychedelic fury. Subsequent albums would see
the band honing their craft, mastering their mission, and ultimately
abandoning that path in favor of more grandiose pursuits. Flanked
by increasingly larger orchestras, MONO performed live at some of
the most prestigious venues in New York City, London, Tokyo, and
Australia. MONO had become an orchestral rock band, a spectacle
of extreme melancholy and melodrama. By 2012's For My Parents,
the band had finally reached the logical conclusion of that era; it
was time to remember where they started, and to rethink where
they were heading. Less strings? No strings? Louder? Quieter?
    Lighter? Darker? Yes.

The Last Dawn and Rays of Darkness are a pair of new albums by
MONO. Recorded simultaneously yet conceptually and creatively
disparate, the two act as both opposing and complementary sides
to a story. No strangers to narratives, the twin albums explore
familiar themes for the band: Hope and hopelessness, love and
loss, immense joy and unspeakable pain. Those elemental parts of
life and the complicated relationships they create have never been
more resonant through MONO's music than they are here.

Rays of Darkness is the first MONO album in 15 years to feature
no orchestral instruments whatsoever. That fact alone is
remarkable given the band's reputation for sweeping, dramatic
instrumentals that recall Oscar-worthy film scores. Instead, Rays of
Darkness more closely resembles a jet engine taking off inside a
small, crowded auditorium. It is MONO's blackest album ever, a
collection of scorched riffs, doom rhythms, and an unexpected
contribution from post-hardcore pioneer Tetsu Fukagawa of Envy.
The album ends with the smoldering wreckage of distorted guitars
and ominous drones playing out a eulogy to the days when MONO
shot blinding rays of light through seemingly endless darkness.

    Every Color Of Darkness

It has been four years since Guillermo S. Herren released
anything significant from his most famous and respected
moniker, Prefuse 73 (though he did keep busy with live
shows, collaborations, and remixes). That's a long time for
virtually any artist, but it's an eternity for Herren, whose first
three Prefuse 73 albums dropped in the span of four years.
As if to make up for lost time, 2015 will see the release of
not one, but three major works from Prefuse 73. After
several albums that saw Herren progressively drift away
from the beatmaking prowess that made him synonymous
with emotionally resonant, damaged hip-hop, he's found
himself reinvigorated - thanks in large part to an emotionally
draining, creatively cashed few years. As Herren puts it, I've
come back to hyper focusing - immersing myself in the
sounds, rhythms, and formations that created Prefuse 73 in
the first place. Recently, I've found a new life in the whole
process of refining what I've created over the years as
"Prefuse". Right now I'm at my most confident and
    comfortable since 05/06.

It shows. The conclusion of a triptych of new recordings,
Every Color of Darkness basks in the darkest corners of
Prefuse 73's world, finding an eerie romanticism in manic
beats and damaged jazz. It's a record that showcases his
uncanny ability to excavate and exploit a source of light
    buried in pitch black.

For an artist who has played an undeniably integral role in
the careers of so many influential artists - from MF Doom
to Battles to Flying Lotus - it's not just refreshing to hear
him return to top form...it's revelatory.

    Speed Of Darkness

Speed of Darkness, the follow-up to 2008's Float is punk ensemble Flogging Molly's fifth and arguably most important album to date. In the words of lead singer/songwriter Dave King, It wasn't the album we set out to write. It became the album we had to write. Speed of Darkness, produced by Ryan Hewitt (RHCP, The Avett Brothers) was written in Detroit, MI and takes a hard-nosed look at the economic collapse in the U.S. and the causes and the direct effect it has had on everyday people. The Motor City serves as the album's muse and a painful example of what has gone wrong. While Speed of Darkness attacks much of the greed and ignorance responsible for where we are, the album also delivers a message of hope, humanity and the resilience of mankind.

From their beginnings as a raucous pub band in Los Angeles in the late 1990's, the band has worn their blue collar ethos proudly and loudly, most notably during their incredible live performances. And now, as the country and the rest of the world rise up to recover and rebuild, never has that ethos been more apparent and important than on Speed of Darkness. The album, like Flogging Molly itself, is a testament to youth and resilience, to growing old and the wisdom of scars, and yet for all of the record's darkness and the speed with which it descends, the ultimate theme is one of light: we can preserve and we will.

    First Light's Freeze

A dark, mutant-country sound infused with strands of free-jazz and a late-70's Nashville big-radio strut hijacked by post-punk unravelers. The result is a beautiful mix of somber reflection, destination-unknown travelogue, and subversive anti-war boogie. Freeze confronts the mythology of war and friendship; the close proximity of things painful and pleasurable, and the complications of this as a paradigm for the world. Castanets suggest artistic geography as transcontinental as Merle Haggard, Albert Ayler, Television, and Richard and Mimi Farina.

    Turn On The Bright Lights

Interpol's classic debut album now available on low cost vinyl.

Interpol: Carlos D., Daniel Kessler, Paul Banks, Samuel Fogarino. To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the 1970s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. Just how they do it is indefinable, perhaps it's just a trick of the light, or the life that breathes gloomily, radiantly throughout, but it's undeniable. Vocals which fall somewhere between Ian Curtis's plaintive, edge-of-oblivion wail and the winking, laconic drawl of James's Tim Booth, ripping uncompromisingly through unpredictable, unforgettable lamentations from the reflective (NYC) to the imploring (PDA). When the darkly etched, implosive, mournful lyrics poke out as they do on the unrelenting Obstacle 1 (she puts the weights into my little heart and she gets in my room and she tears it apart), the hook is set for an important debut by a band that portends to be around a while.
