The album was self-recorded and self-produced in their home studio in Tyler, TX - the band's first time recording completely independently, which proved to be a rejuvinating and rewarding process.

The new album sees Eisley's signature tapestry of rich harmonies, delicately woven over the band's most intricate instrumentations yet. The relaxed, creative setting also allowed for the band's most collaborative effort to date, seeing more prominent bass and guitar lines than ever before, a song written and sung by lead guitarist Chauntelle DuPree-D'Agostino (her first ever full-song solo lead vocal performance), and guest performances from Merriment and Say Anything's Max Bemis.

"Currents is honestly the first time we've had total and complete free reign over the making of one of our records and it felt so liberating. We were able to dig deeper musically; There are lusher arrangements and more abstract themes. I feel like we really were able to experiment this time in the studio while still enjoying doing what we love which is essentially writing pop songs," explains vocalist/guitarist Sherri DuPree-Bemis.

"I think our fans have always appreciated that Eisley doesn't sound exactly like every other band and I think we've succeeded in taking that element a bit further on this record. We're more confident as a band than we have ever been. I think the people that have always loved the darker, whimsical side of our sound will be very pleased with the songs on this record while the people who have enjoyed what's melodic, simple and sweet about Eisley will be quite pleased as well. The title Currents, to me, is relevant to how we feel as a band at this point in our career. The current is constantly moving and flowing no matter what and that's what we've always done together and plan to keep doing."

    The Current Will Carry Us

COUNTERPARTS has come quite a long way since their formation in 2007. With a fan base that has progressively expanded beyond their home province, the young artists have toured Canada relentlessly since March 2009. The band's upward trajectory truly took off after the release of their debut full-length, Prophets, in February 2010. The Verona Records release turned heads across the country, as well as past its borders. The record proved to be an immediate hit among fans of the hardcore genre, simultaneously garnering praise from scene luminaries and newcomers. Its impact was bold and far-reaching, going so far as to earn the band several award nominations throughout Ontario. The positive response caused the band's touring regimen to increase significantly, with a slew of tours taking place both at home and in the United States alongside prominent hardcore acts such IT PREVAILS. At a point when most bands would take time off to relax, COUNTERPARTS proved themselves once again to be as hard working as they come. In November 2010, the band released a split EP alongside Ontario-based hardcore unit Exalt. The EP was another instant hit among fans, and proved that the band still had plenty left to offer, both musically and lyrically, that had not been showcased on their debut.

In October 2011, COUNTERPARTS released The Current Will Carry Us via influential independent label Victory Records. The sophomore LP saw the band pursuing a rawer, straightforward sound, and achieving a new level of honesty through their lyrics. Tossing any idealistic rhetoric aside, the album offers listeners an extremely introspective listening experience that depicts the band in their most sincere, vulnerable state. While the album marks a clear thematic departure from its predecessor, its unrestrained aggression makes an emotional impact that's even more genuine. The record's reception easily exceeded the expectations of the band members, landing them a selection as one of Alternative Press' "100 Bands You Need To Know In 2012" and propelled them onto European tours, in which they would bring their unforgettable live presence to listeners who'd spent years anxiously awaiting the opportunity.

    Ulysses

Includes Two Unreleased Tracks Not Available Anywhere Else

Victoria, B.C.'s Current Swell is set to release their new album, Ulysses, on May 6, 2014. The 12-tracks
on Ulysses perfectly deliver the band's textured, deep-groove sound while capturing the energy of their live
show, which has earned them scores of fans across The Americas, Australia and Europe. The band will
debut many of these new songs next month in Austin during SXSW.

Ulysses was produced by Nathan Sabatino (Dr. Dog, Neko Case, Giant Sand) at Vancouver's iconic
Greenhouse Studios. The album captures every bit of warmth the studio's massive Neve console could
provide, as heard on "Rollin'" (a showcase for Stanton's exemplary slide work), the title track "Ulysses,"
rocker "Keys to the Kingdom" and the readymade sing-along "One Day I'll Be Rich."
While Current Swell spent the better part of six months recording their previous album (and Nettwerk
debut), 2012's Long Time Ago, the four band members entered the studio with a clear goal and knocked
    Ulysses out in 20 days.

From appearances at key festivals from Australia to Canada (Byron Bay Bluesfest, Peats Ridge, Rock
The Shores, Ottawa Bluesfest and more), to sold-out headline tours of Brazil, to support slots with such
established artists as Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, Dispatch, Xavier Rudd, K'Naan, The
Tragically Hip and even The Beach Boys, Current Swell's infectious sound and raucous live shows have
earned the quartet scores of devoted fans around the word. In 2011, Current Swell earned first place at
Vancouver's Peak Performance Project and headlined a Canada Day concert to a crowd of 45,000.

All The Light Above It Too (Pre-Order)

Jack Johnson has announced that his next album is called All the Light Above It Too. The album features the slyly political lead single My Mind Is for Sale.

This album shares what has been on my mind during the past year or so, says Johnson in a statement. A year in which I sailed through the North Atlantic Gyre -- a circular system of ocean currents -- for a documentary about plastic pollution in the ocean. A year in which [Donald] Trump was elected as the President of the United States.

A year in which I camped, surfed, got stitches, explored, dreamed, shared time and endless conversations with my family and friends, he continues. All of which inspired these songs.

Rega Brio-R Integrated Amp (Certified Pre-Owned)

    40th

    2011 2012

    Certified Pre-Owned

The Brio-R embodies all the necessary ingredients. Substantial toroidal transformer, generous power supply components, rugged output stage, the use of film capacitors in the signal path and at all critical positions within the phono amplifier.

    New output amplifier

Developed by our engineers a newly designed output amplifier using a low source impedance emitter follower Class A driver stage. Based around a complementary pair of 150w Sanken Darlington output transistors, this combination forms a complementary emitter follower emulating Class A conditions with good thermal stability and lower standing currents in the driver stage.

    Remote Control

Remote control has been added to the Brio-R without compromising the sonic design of the amplifier. This was achieved by keeping the remote circuit separate to the audio circuit and having its own dedicated power supply.

There is no direct contact between the micro-controller and the signal path, the micro-controller controls the relays whilst the volume control motor uses DC control voltages.

    High quality components

The Brio-R utilises the highest quality components and our engineers' experience to achieve the best sonic performance, ensuring it is the most advanced and feature packed Brio to date.

    Improved power supplies

During the Brio-R design process Rega reviewed the circuit and improved the low and high current power supplies, coupling and bypass capacitors. The phono stage has been improved to reflect the current improvements in the Rega Planar turntables, where the input sensitivity has been increased along with a revision of the sub 100Hz part of the phono frequency response.

    Custom Case & Design

Housed in a brand new custom case the Brio-R draws on the pedigree of the previous three incarnations of this model. The sonic recipe for the Brio-R embodies the best in traditional audio circuits with excellent engineering practice.

    Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes

Legendary Punk Rock Band's 1st Studio Record Since 2004

Group Embraces Gritty, Soulful Currents on Can't-Miss Set

Social Distortion's first new studio record in nearly six years, Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes builds on singer Mike Ness twin footings, one in the haunted American landscapes of Hank Williams and the other in the raw swagger of Exile On Main Streetâ€era Rolling Stones. While these twin pillars have always been behind Social Distortions anthemic songs, on Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes they come roaring to the fore, in one of the hardest rocking, most soulful albums of Ness career.

From opener California (Hustle and Flow), a song with enough attitude to redline a 40 Merc, to the dark rockin cover of Hank Williams' Alone and Forsaken, longtime fans will find the trademark punk roar they love. New fans, too, will be drawn to Ness maturing songwriting and vocals with an eye to his rock and roll legacy. Ness also produced Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes (his first time at the production helm).

Cigar-puffing hoodlums, sleazy pimps, staggering winos, down-and-out blue-collar stiffs, on-the-run hustlers, wounded romantics, and spurned lovers are among the crowds that congregate on the street corners of Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, one of the most consistent, complete, soulful, and tunefully gritty records of Social Distortions career. The set reflects the groups progressive embrace of organ into arrangements. As such, subtle spiritual undercurrents coarse through several tunes.

Reads Kaddish - A 20th Century American Ecstatic Narrative Poem

    Pressed On Red Colored Vinyl

Along with Howl, Kaddish stands as one of Allen Ginsberg's most illustrious creations. Always a follower of popular trends in music, Ginsberg had spent parts of 1958 digging into Ray Charles' "I Got A Woman" - occasionally doing so while on morphine and methamphetamine. One evening, in this drug-induced state while cranking some Ray, Ginsberg began discussing his mother Naomi with his pal Zev Putterman. Putterman in turn, began reciting the traditional Hebrew "Kaddish" prayer for mourning the dead. Soon after, fueled by Dexedrine, LSD, and caffeine, Allen penned the majority of Kaddish. In early 1959, Kaddish received its debut performance at a poetry reading at Columbia University - in which Allen shared the bill with his lover Peter Orlovsky and fellow beat poet Gregory Corso. Over time, the manuscript was tweaked and adjusted until publication in April 1961 by City Lights. Then, in November 1964, with Orlovsky and Corso in tow, the trio performed several gigs at Harvard and Brandeis Universities, and it was at Brandeis where this recording was made. Released in 1966, Kaddish turned out to be the only record in Atlantic's spoken-word Verbum series; but if label head Jerry Wexler changed his mind about the imprint, he remained a big fan of the work, later telling Los Angeles historian Harvey Kubernik that Kaddish had stirred "the Yiddish currents in my own blood" and inspired "joy and anguish the exaltation that great poetry will bring on." Indeed, Kaddish is an intensely personal and moving work, capturing the complex relationship between Ginsberg, his mother, and his faith, and concluding with a heartrending description of her death. Real Gone Music is very proud to present the first-ever vinyl reissue of this landmark performance, in its original gatefold packaging with an added inner sleeve featuring new liner notes by Pat Thomas and memorabilia provided by the Allen Ginsberg estate over an hour of one of the towering figures in American poetry reading one of his greatest works.

Remastered Double LP With 12-Page Booklet

Includes Liner Notes By Tim Lawrence, Ernie Brooks And Arthur Russell

All Material Previously Released On The Audika CD Compilation First Thought Best Thought

Before Disco, and before the transcendent echoes, Arthur wanted to be a composer.

His journey began in 1972, leaving home in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Heading west to Northern California, Arthur studied Indian classical composition at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music followed by western orchestral music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, before ending two years later in New York at the Manhattan School of Music.

Traversing the popular and the serious, Arthur composed "Instrumentals" in 1974, inspired by the photography of his Buddhist teacher, Yuko Nonomura, as Arthur described, "I was awakened, or re-awakened to the bright-sound and magical qualities of the bubblegum and easy-listening currents in American popular music".

Initially intended to be performed in one 48 hour cycle, "Instrumentals" was in fact only performed in excerpts a handful of times as a work in progress.

The legendary performances captured live in New York at The Kitchen (1975 and 1978) and Franklin St. Arts Center (1977) feature the cream of that eras downtown new music scene including Ernie Brooks, Rhys Chatham, Julius Eastman, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, Garrett List, Andy Paley, Bill Ruyle, Dave Van Tieghem, and Peter Zummo.

Pitchfork lauded "Instrumentals" Vol. 1 as a masterpiece and one of Arthur's "greatest achievements". Americana touching on Copeland, Ives, and maybe even Brian Wilson. "Instrumentals" Vol. 2 is a moving, deeply pastoral work performed by the CETA Orchestra and conducted by Julius Eastman.

Also included are two of Arthur's most elusive compositions, Reach One, and Sketch For "Face Of Helen". Recorded live in 1975 at Phill Niblock's Experimental Intermedia Foundation, Reach One is a minimal, hypnotic ambient soundscape written and performed for two Fender Rhodes pianos. Sketch For "Face Of Helen" was inspired by Arthur's work with friend and composer Arnold Dreyblatt, recorded with an electronic tone generator, keyboard and ambient recordings of a rumbling tugboat from the Hudson River.

For this remastered vinyl edition, a key part of Arthur's musical life has been restored. The sparkling, multidimensional results take the listener closer to Arthur's coast-to-coast journey: his iconoclastic determination to combine pop and art music; and his desire to make music that would resonate in the present and, ultimately, across time.

Golden Triangle is a band of three girls and three boys who play music that's loud and spooky, and will make you aroused and ambitious. They fall somewhere along the psychedelic / garage / post-punk spectrum, with two singing ladies who sound like soulful ghosts.Recorded over a two week period at Key Club Recording Company with producer Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House, Blonde Redhead), Double Jointer has the speed and catchiness of the current garage / weird-punk / lo-fi movement with some profoundly goth under-currents and some no-wave guitar over-currents.

    AudioQuest JitterBug USB Filter

Have a question about this product? Please email our audio advisor or call 1-877-929-8729 with any questions or concerns regarding your equipment purchase.

    AudioQuest's new dual-function JitterBug is a USB
line (VBUS) and signal (data) filter. JitterBug
follows the footsteps of our award-winning,
category-defining DragonFly USB DAC, and our
    best-in-class, USB, Ethernet, FireWire and
    Thunderbolt digital interconnects, promising the
next step forward in high-performance computeraudio
    playback.

While USB (along with Ethernet) has become one
of the two most important and widely adopted
interfaces in the age of computer audio, it does
come with its own unique sets of liabilities-mainly
    sound-degrading noise currents. All computing
devices, whether they be laptops, phones, NAS or
    even dedicated "music servers," inherently
generate a significant amount of noise and
parasitic resonances. In addition to this, many
computers (the least offensive being laptops, as
they are required to meet rigorous safety
standards) can and often do contribute a
considerable amount or RFI and EMI pollution
onto the signal paths-all of which can easily find
its way onto your USB cables and into your audio
system. This noise and interference has many
    negative effects. Noise-compromised digital
circuitry increases jitter (dispersion in time) and
packet errors, resulting in distortion that causes a
comparatively flat and irritating sound. Noisecompromised
    analog circuitry also damages the
    sound's depth, warmth, and resolution.

Fortunately, AudioQuest has devised a solution for
    dealing with these liabilities. JitterBug's
    dual-circuitry measurably reduces unwanted noise
currents and parasitic resonances. It also reduces
jitter and packet errors (in some cases, packet
errors are completely eliminated.) The result is
clearer, more compelling sound, music, and
dialogue - a better audio experience.

Slightly smaller than our DragonFly USB DAC, and
    with a handsome, unassuming appearance,
JitterBug has a USB (male) plug on one end and a
USB (female) port on the opposite. For those who
already own DragonFly, JitterBug will be a fun and
affordable upgrade: Simply plug JitterBug into any
one of a computer's available USB ports, then
plug DragonFly into JitterBug's USB port.

But JitterBug is far more than an obvious partner
for DragonFly. In fact, its versatility may very
well match that of the USB standard itself:
JitterBug can be successfully used with external
USB DACs ranging from the very modest to the
absolute state of the art. Simply plug JitterBug
into an available USB port, and use a USB cable
to connect JitterBug to the DAC of choice.

Many computers include more than one USB
    port. For additional
    improvement to a system's
    overall sound, a second
JitterBug can be used in parallel
(but not in series) with the first.
    The improvement is audible
    through the active audio port,
    whether or not the second
    JitterBug fills an empty USB
port, or is used in series with
    some other peripheral, such as
    a printer. Note: We recommend
    no more than two JitterBug
filters per USB bus. If you do
not know how many USB buses
exist on a given device, err on the side of
caution: Presume that there is a single bus and
use no more than two JitterBugs.

JitterBug can also be used with mobile phones,
portable media devices, USB peripherals, and
    network storage/streaming devices. Many
receivers, DACs, and automobiles include USB
input ports that are compatible with iOS and
Android devices, enabling music lovers to use
their mobile phones or USB memory sticks as
audio sources. By first plugging a JitterBug into
the associated USB input port, the playback
performance of such media devices can be
significantly improved. In cases where a noisy
external computer peripheral (such as a printer,
camera, or hard drive) must be connected to a
computer-audio system, JitterBug can be used in
    series with the peripheral
    device. Similarly, streamers,
    Network Attached Storage
    devices, and routers may all
include USB ports, and all can
    benefit from JitterBug's noise
    filtering-again, regardless of
    whether the associated port has
    a device connected to it.

    Simply put, JitterBug's
    dual-circuitry measurably
    reduces the noise and ringing
that plague both the data and
power lines of USB ports. As
with many things in audio, the effect of
JitterBug on the overall sound of a system may
vary slightly, depending on the associated gear
    and application. Experimentation is
    enthusiastically encouraged. The results will
likely prove more than worth the effort.

At JitterBug's modest price of $49, the question
isn't whether your customers can afford it, but
whether they can afford not to use one or two.

The Elex-R is a sublime blend of the Brio-R design with the power circuits and advanced phono stage of the Elicit-R. Rega's engineers have achieved the perfect balance of power, control and dynamics, delivering a performance that always puts the music first.

You will find plenty of connectivity options allowing complete flexibility and integration within the rest of the Rega range.

    Design Innovation

The Elex-R is built to the highest standard and designed to deliver the best possible audio performance whilst remaining simple to use and easy to setup. The Elex-R is built into the full width Rega case with increased heat dissipation, which along with a larger transformer enables the Elex-R to deliver 90 Watts per channel into 6 and 72.5 Watts per channel into a design centre rating of 8.

Our time, effort & money have been spent on developing the circuit and construction utilizing the highest specification of components throughout. As part of the design we have included useful features like pre-amplifier output, to enable the new Elex-R amplifier to be used in a wide combination of systems and have avoided superfluous gadgets such as tone controls or a headphone socket as they can obstruct the signal path and degrade the produced sound quality.

The Elex-R has been built to Rega's extremely high standards of reliability and quality to ensure many years of musical enjoyment. The primary function of an amplifier is to boost and equalize the low level signal generated by a phono cartridge, DAC and CD player or other source component to a level that can drive the loudspeakers. It is vital that the amplifier achieves this whilst minimising distortion, as this would directly affect the music. The distortion level is typically 0.007%; just under the clipping of the output.

The volume control and pre-amplifier used in the Elex-R is designed to overcome the problems associated with the standard arrangement. This design uses a custom chip along with peripheral support IC's like a microcontroller and a custom made rotary volume control.

The Elex-R uses a combined feedback and passive volume control, where the feedback and input levels are varied to set the required volume level. The level and tracking between the two channels is set by the close tolerance parts in the pre-amplifier circuit and less by the actual potentiometer itself, thus keeping the mismatch of channels due to volume control tracking irregularities to a minimum. As well as keeping tracking irregularities to a minimum, this method also reduces noise and input overload as the control will only 'use' the required gain to amplify the signal. This form of volume control is normally only found in professional broadcast environments where accurate low noise control of levels is required.

    Power Amplifier Technology

The output amplifier used in the Elex-R, Elicit-R and Brio-R was born after extensive research by our engineers to develop a low source impedance emitter follower Class-A driver stage. This is based around a complementary pair of 150w Sanken Darlington output transistors. The technical and sonic improvement gained by the use of low impedance drivers is well known, however, it can feature high standing currents in the driver stage when using standard transistor configurations. By combining the low impedance driver with the Sanken Darlington transistors (with their imbedded thermal bias network running at a lower standing current) this combination forms a complementary emitter follower emulating Class-A conditions with good thermal stability with lower standing.

Introducing the Rega ISIS flagship CD player

We are very proud to introduce the 7th generation of Rega CD player.

A product manufactured to the highest achievable quality inside and out, Rega's own unique CD technology, genuine black chrome lid and front facia, a custom solid anodised aluminium case weighing in at a notable 19kg! We hope you enjoy this very special CD player; we have spent a very long time creating it, drawing on our many years of experience in specialist Hi-Fi manufacturing.

Technology behind the design of the Isis

One important design goal was to take the current output, with no internal amplification within the D to A converter, and convert this to an analogue voltage, using discrete class A operational amplifiers and filters. This circuit can then be optimised for sonic performance. (With most CD players the use of standard operational integrated circuits locks you into the sound of those particular integrated circuits, thus narrowing the scope for improvement).

The class A current to voltage conversion amplifier evolved out of the development of the first stage of the Rega IOS MC amplifier.

It shares identical demands of low noise, high drive capability and gain bandwidth required of the voltage to current amplifier.

Careful choice has been made for every component in the digital and the analogue signal path to ensure the integrity of the signal.

The analogue and digital sections are bonded together using a substantial ground plane. It was found during the development of the player that
adoption of RF ground plane techniques aided the sonic quality and therefore were included in the final design.

Careful design of the PCB's ensures isolation of not just the digital and analogue sections, but also the motor, display and user interface processor.

All sonically critical electrolytic capacitors have been by-passed with polypropylene or polyester film capacitors. In addition to this, large value electrolytic capacitors have also been by-passed with audio grade electrolytic capacitors.
Power supply impedances in the digital to analogue converter are kept very low by the use of solid polymer capacitors.

All power supplies utilise custom Rega K-Power smoothing capacitors, along with fast diodes which have been used throughout in power supply rectification.

The Isis uses enhanced and optimised control code for the control of the CD processor and user display. This speeds up the initialisation process by means of a tighter control interface between the user micro and CD processor.

    Analogue section

The analogue section employs two Burr Brown PCM1794 digital to analogue converters, running in a parallel dual mono mode, driving a high performance discrete class A current to voltage amplifier.

This combination generates an exceptionally wide dynamic range, low distortion, and linear signal. This drives an enhanced discrete class A output amplifier. The circuit is fully balanced from the digital to analogue converters to the balanced analogue XLR outputs. The analogue stage has its own dedicated 50VA mains transformer which ensures galvanic isolation between the digital and analogue sections of the player. You will find 10 separate power supply regulators are used in the analogue circuit and each individual amplifier stage has its own dedicated low noise voltage reference.

    Digital section

The digital section is blue printed and selected, with major improvements to the mechanism, optical amplifier, DSP core, PLL, master clock & motor power supplies. Another 10 separate power supply regulators are used in the digital circuit. The motor, user interface processor & display also have their own power supply. The digital stage also has its own 50VA transformer again ensuring galvanic isolation. The mechanism is graded and matched to the servo circuits, to ensure the servo and optical amplifiers are working at their optimum point, improving error correction and playability. The headroom of the optical amplifier has been improved by 10% by increasing the voltage in the power supply.

    Digital

This revolutionary player has been five years in design. Rega, together with its design partners have pioneered a highly advanced servo controller that uses the latest signal processing techniques to ensure that the raw data that is recovered from the disc is of the very highest quality. Because our fully digital servo can use highly advanced algorithms the laser spot is kept in the optimum position for data recovery in terms of focus, size and tracking.

    Extra Error Correction

Previous chip-sets always made compromises on error correction. Formerly it was possible to have good jog resistance or better musical performance.
The Rega chip-set allows optimum musical performance and optimised jog /vibration resistance.

    Super-stable phase lock loop

The entire IC is clocked via a very special PLL of our own design. This allows better CD data recovery as well as a big improvement in the quality of the data delivered to the DAC.

    Low noise digital design

In the design of our CPU IC we went to great lengths to ensure that the data and address bus noise was kept to an absolute minimum. This ensures the ground and signal connections to the DAC are as 'clean' as is possible.

    USB Input

Allowing direct connection to a laptop or PC via a USB A-B lead to stream internet radio Mp3 or WMA files directly from your computer via the high quality ISIS internal DAC.

The USB input uses an isolated double-clocked USB interface, which permits the digital to analogue stage to be used with a computer USB interface and it's own regulated power supply.

The USB benefits once again from galvanic isolation from the main circuitry of the ISIS player which eliminates the flow of earth currents between the CD and host computer, and eliminate computer power supply noise.

    Disc Analysis

The ISIS will analyse each disc on an individual basis. During the initialising period (rather like the engine management system on a modern car which optimises the engine settings to temperature, fuel quality etc.) the ISIS will adjust itself to each disc in order to give optimal trouble free reading. For this reason the ISIS will often play discs with marks or scratches that other players cannot read.

All these features amalgamate to create the supreme level of performance found in the Isis and provide a perfect partner for the Rega Osiris amplifier.

Those Who Didn't Run EP (On Sale)

To say Colin Stetson has come into his own in 2011 would be an understatement. February of 2011 saw the release of Colin's highly acclaimed solo album New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges broadly received as a sonic, conceptual, compositional and technical tour de force. Thanks to his trajectory as a session and guest player with a diverse crop of iconoclastic pop/rock practitioners (Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, TV On The Radio, Arcade Fire) as well as his own tenure in bands like Sway Machinery and Bell
Orchestre, Stetson was poised to bridge the gap between contemporary rock and more rarified currents of avant jazz. With the Judges album, he did just that, garnering high praise from the both the jazz and pop/rock worlds.

Colin's astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what solo horn playing can sound like. Stetson is equally at home in the avant jazz tradition of players who have pushed the boundaries of the instrument through circular breathing, embouchure, etc. (i.e. Evan Parker, Mats Gustafsson) and at the nexus of noise/drone/minimalist music that encompasses genres like dark metal, post-rock and contemporary eletronics (i.e. Tim Hecker and Ben Frost both of whom have mixed or remixed Stetson recordings).

Stetson's non-stop gigging at SXSW 2011 (on the NPR, Pitchfork and Pop Montreal stages) led to hundreds of dropped jaws and just as many superlatives about the man's mind-altering, heart-rending music: how it defies both genre boundaries and the physical boundaries of what one person can sonically generate in live performance with a single acoustic instrument, without recourse to looping pedals or other effects.

Through the 30-odd solo performances delivered in the wake of the Judges release in the Spring of 2011, Colin continued delving into new compositions and especially more long-form trance/transcendental explorations. Having premiered a couple of these new songs at a small art gallery show in Montreal in May of 2011, Constellation was duly blown away and encouraged Colin to record them while still in their raw, staminatesting glory. He agreed and brought in good friend (and now Grammy-winning engineer) Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Islands) to help capture the performances in Stetson's own basement rehearsal/studio space.

The two pieces on this new EP both clock in at 10 minutes and are documented in direct fashion, using a handful of mic positions and, as usual, no looping or overdubbing of any sort. They are brilliant single-take performances that showcase Stetson's love for minimalism, a subtle pop sensibility, and a mesmerising, mantric, time-warping technical ability.

Those Who Didn't Run EP is an amazing addition to what will no doubt be an expanding Colin Stetson discography in coming years; a wonderfully realized portrait of Colin's solo playing before he embarks on a year's worth of touring as part of Bon Iver's live band.

Those Who Didn't Run EP is available as a 10 pressed on heavyweight audiophile vinyl and comes in a screenprinted jacket by Repetitive Press in Montreal, featuring an illustration by Nadia Moss.

New Project Led By Montreal Cellist Rebecca Foon

(ESMERINE, SILVER MT ZION, SET FIRE TO FLAMES)

    • Features Jamie Thompson (UNICORNS) and Guest Players from LITTLE SCREAM, PATRICK WATSON BAND
    and BELL ORCHESTRE

    • Recorded and Mixed by Grammy-Winning Engineer
    Mark Lawson (ARCADE FIRE)

Saltland is the new project led by Montreal-based cellist Rebecca Foon, best
known as a founding member of contemporary chamber group Esmerine and a former
member of Thee Silver Mt. Zion and Set Fire To Flames. Foon began composing solo
work in 2010, featuring multi-layered cello and hushed vocals at the intersection of
drone, no-wave, improv, dream-pop and minimalism. Joined by Jamie Thompson
(Unicorns, Esmerine) on miniature percussion, programming and signal processing,
Foon's live performances in Montreal and abroad over the past two years have seen
her sound progress towards gently rhythmic and electronic territory as well. She has
transfixed audiences with this new music while sharing the stage with Mary Margaret
O'Hara, Julia Kent, Nat Baldwin and Sam Amidon, among others. As her largely homerecorded debut album began taking shape throughout 2011, with numerous guests
contributing to various pieces, Foon adopted the Saltland moniker for this work.

I Thought It Was Us But It Was All Of Us is a beautifully restrained debut
album that telescopes the directness and economy of Foon's compositional and vocal
styles into lush, twilight atmospheres aglow with luminescent tendrils and flickering
particles. Foon sings of childhood innocence lost, of tender utopic reveries and
downcast dystopic horizons, and the search for soft, stoic strength in a darkening,
devolving world. Foon's voice is discreet but defined, drifting on buoyant currents of
sound sourced from her plucked and bowed cello lines, in most cases propelled by
Thompson's bespoke percussion and understated programming/processing, with
touches of guitar, bass, horns, woodwinds, strings and backing vocals added by a cast
of supporting players. The record unfurls like a gauzy flag in a restless breeze at dusk:
a delicate, resolute sentinel set against the fading light.

The album's ambience also owes much to the work of Mark Lawson, the awardwinning engineer (Arcade Fire) who collaborated closely with Foon to record and mix
these songs at Six Saint V, her apartment studio in Montreal. Lawson, along with
friend and percussionist Thompson, helped to forge a balance between lo-fi intimacy
and shimmering breadth with these recordings, remaining faithful to the all-anologue
instrumentation of the source material while judiciously deploying signal processing
strategies to subtly refract, saturate and expand the sonic landscape. With
contributions from Laurel Sprengelmeyer and Jess Robertson (Little Scream), Mishka
Stein (Patrick Watson), Colin Stetson (Bon Iver), Sarah Neufeld and Richard Reed Parry
(Arcade Fire) among others, Saltland offers up an unassumingly immersive debut
album of searching songs that blend several core influences into a distinctively
naturalistic sound. Saltland stakes out an unaffected, meditative, clear-eyed and
earnest space where minimalism, dream-pop, drone, shoegaze, confessional folk,
modern chamber and ambient/electronic coexist and coalesce.
