Electric Music For The Mind And Body (Pure Pleasure) (Awaiting Repress)

Country Joe & The Fish full-length debut is their most joyous and cohesive statement and one of the most important and enduring documents of the psychedelic era, the band's swirl of distorted guitar and organ at its most inventive. In contrast to Jefferson Airplane, who were at their best working within conventional song structures, and the Grateful Dead, who hadn't quite yet figured out how to transpose their music to the recording studio, Country Joe & the Fish delivered a fully formed, uncompromising, and yet utterly accessible - in fact, often delightfully witty - body of psychedelic music the first time out. Ranging in mood from good-timey to downright apocalyptic, it embraced all of the facets of the band's music, which were startling in their diversity: soaring guitar and keyboard excursions (Flying High, Section 43, Bass Strings, The Masked Marauder), the group's folk roots (Sad and Lonely Times), McDonald's personal ode to Grace Slick (Grace), and their in-your-face politics (Superbird). Hardly any band since the Beatles had ever come up with such a perfect and perfectly bold introduction to who and what they were, and the results - given the prodigious talents and wide-ranging orientation of this group - might've scared off most major record labels. Additionally, this is one of the best-performed records of its period, most of it so bracing and exciting that one gets some of the intensity of a live performance. One of Vanguard Records' classic albums, with startlingly vivid stereo separation and a close, intimate sound.

    Musicians:

    • Country Joe McDonald (guitar, harmonica, tambourine, vocal)

    • David Cohen (guitar, organ, vocal)

    • Barry Melton (guitar, vocal)

    • Bruce Barthol (bass, harmonium)

    • Chicken Hirsh (drums)

Recording at Sierra Sound Laboratories, Berkeley, CA, USA, by Robert di Souza

    Production: Samuel Charters

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Mad River

By far the most ominous-sounding of the Bay Areas 1960s psychedelic bands, the music of Berkeleys Mad River comes across like a spiraling, acid-spiked descent into hell. With a raw, garagey style marked by Lawrence Hammonds quavering vocals and the interlocking exchanges of guitarists David Robinson and Rick Bockner, Mad Rivers sound conjures a darker, more menacing version of Quicksilver Messenger Service or early Country Joe and The Fish. No wonder the quintets self-titled 1968 debut has long been at the top of many collectors want lists. Mad Rivers tabs of tortured soulcuts like the lysergic opening rush of Merciful Monks, the lengthy, labyrinthine The War Goes On, and the truly demented Amphetamine Gazelleadd up to one cathartic ride, a ride that psych-heads will be tripping all over themselves to take again and again. Sundazeds exact reproduction of this lost classic is sourced directly from the original Capitol Records stereo masters.

    Tony Joe White (On Sale)

Tony Joe White scored big with 1969's Polk Salad Annie from the album Black & White [MOVLP989] and he was having success as a songwriter too: Rainy Night In Georgia was a huge hit for Brook Benton in 1970.

His self-titled third album (1971) finds the Swamp Fox tempering his bluesy rockers with a handful of introspective, soul-dripping ballads and introducing horn and string arrangements for the first time. The addition of the Memphis Horns and other Muscle Shoals session men really worked well for the album. Many of the songs will remind the listener just how turbulent the cultural climate of the late '60s and early '70s was in the U.S. Songs like The Change, Black Panther Swamps and I Just Walked Away (the album's first single) are testament to the era.

The album was recorded over a two-week period in December 1970, in two different Memphis studios. Producing the album was none other than London-born Peter Asher, who had just produced James Taylor's early hits.

Like, Love, Lust, And The Open Halls Of The Soul

Jesse Sykes is hard to pin down--and that's a good thing indeed. She overlaps with current trends, but is completely her own artist. There are elements of alt-country, psych-folk, and singer-songwriter-troubadour, but also others that add alluring breadth to her sound, most notably in the band's penchant for drawing upon the best aspects of Haight-Ashbury ballroom sonics. How Will We Know swirls and builds with guitar tones that evoke John Cippolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Barry Melton (Country Joe & the Fish). Sykes has taken those sounds (which were often the best part of the era's rather feeble cowboy machismo) and added finesse, poetics, and a woman's vantage point. Her lyrics are rife with cold winds and loneliness, but never without hope, even if that element is handled by the warm glow of the music. The band is a sympathetically balanced entity with supple power and grace. They move between loud and soft without the now cliched extreme dramatics originally pioneered by the Pixies--another example of Sykes eschewing trends and forging her own path.

    The Shine (Awaiting Repress)

One of the most distinctive and respected songwriters of the Deep South, Tony Joe White, gets raw and real on his new record THE SHINE, set for a September 28 release on his own Swamp Records. THE SHINE is a stripped-down collection of ten new White-penned songs that beautifully lays bare his rich, nuanced baritone, and distinctive brand of swampy southern soul.

While Whites critically acclaimed Uncovered featured a slew of special guests including Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Michael McDonald and J.J. Cale, THE SHINE is all about White. He produced and recorded the album himself in his home studio outside Nashville. From the first whispery notes of Season Man, in which he recounts an ominous dream, to the records closing track, A Place to Watch the Sun Go Down, THE SHINE is an album of understated beauty and beguiling mystery.

    Rain Crow

"With a deep, come-hither voice" (Mother Jones) and an "ability to turn that throbbing, thumping uh-uhh hazy guitar beat" (PopMatters), the "King of Swamp Rock" Tony Joe White will release his 19th studio album, Rain Crow, on Yep Roc Records. Recorded at his own studio and produced by his son, Jody White, Rain Crow summons recollections of long ago, when animals foretold the weather, tongue-talking worshippers proved their faith by handling snakes and a "bad wind" could drive a man to edge of insanity.

The nine-song set features new compositions White wrote over the past three years, including co-writes with his wife, Leann, and Billy Bob Thornton on "The Middle of Nowhere." Known for popularizing swamp music, he wrote gems like "Polk Salad Annie" and "Rainy Night in Georgia," and has had his songs performed by Elvis, Ray Charles, and Tina Turner.

    Continued

Continued is the second album released by swamprocker Tony Joe White. Recorded at Monument Studios, Nashville and Lyn-Lou Studios, Memphis in 1969 and released the same year, the album contained the single Roosevelt And Ira Lee. It was produced by Billy Swan and engineered by Tommy Strong and Mort Thomasson.

The album contains the track Rainy Night In Georgia popularized by R&B vocalist Brook Benton in 1970. It reached #4 on the Pop Singles and #2 on the Adult Contemporary charts, respectively. The RIAA certified the single Gold for sales of one million copies. In 2004, it was ranked #498 on the List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. David Ruffin recorded a cover version of the song the same year as Benton, however, Motown for unknown reasons did not release the album.

The song has been covered by a number of musicians, including Ray Charles, Otis Rush, Randy Crawford, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Amos Garrett, Hank Williams, Jr., Shelby Lynne, John Holt, Nicky Thomas, by the duet of Conway Twitty and Sam Moore, Aaron Neville, and reggae band The Gladiators.

    The Traveling Kind

The Traveling Kind follows the longtime friends' first duet album, 2013's Old Yellow Moon, which won Best Americana Album at the 56th annual Grammy Awards as well as two awards at the 2013 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards Show, for Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year. The album also debuted at #4 on the Billboard's Top Country Albums chart.

Produced by Grammy Award winner Joe Henry (Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann), The Traveling Kind comprises 11 duet tracks, including six new songs written by Harris and Crowell with co-writing by Mary Carr, Cory Chisel, Will Jennings, and Larry Klein. Also featured are new renditions of previous Crowell cuts including No Memories Hanging Around as well as new interpretations of Lucinda Williams' I Just Wanted to See You So Bad and Amy Allison's Her Hair Was Red.

Of the project, Harris comments, In the words of Willie Nelson, 'The life I love is making music with my friends,' and there's no better friend for me to make music with than Rodney. I can't wait to get out there on the road with him and play the songs from this new record.

Crowell adds, Emmy and I wrote six of the eleven songs on The Traveling Kind, which was recorded in a six-day span with our Glory Band, Steuart Smith, and Billy Payne. Joe Henry was at the helm as producer and Justin Neibank did the recording. The experience was pretty much akin to falling off a log.

    Uniquely Yours

A decade before he was topping the country charts, Joe Stampley fronted one of the deep souths most legendary and rockin 60s combos, the Uniques. Once signed to Shreveport, Louisiana-based Paula Records, the Uniques made waves nationally on their very first release, Not Too Long Ago. That pop classic (faithfully/recently covered by Nick Lowe) is just one of many highlights of their 66 debut LP, Uniquely Yours. According to the master tape, this record was originally going to be tagged The Uniques in Action; a shelved album title that could not have been more apt.

Finally reissued (and in fabulous mono, to boot), this is southern rock n soul at its finest; a real m√Člange of styles that swings wildly from deep-fried garage rock, frenzied frat-beat, infectious Stampley-penned pop, and gorgeously soulful ballads. From Presley and Gene Vincent to any Justice label 60s garage band worth mentioning, southerners have always littered their LPs with this latter fare. But when it comes to delivering a soulful ballad, Joe Stampley is up there with the very best of em. Uniquely Yours includes the groups all-time biggest regional hit, a cover of Art Nevilles All These Things (in its original mix, unadorned by string overdubs) and a Georgia (On My Mind) that simply blows away all other white boy soul renditions. But make no mistake, this is a largely uptempo set marked by the ferocious punk pace of You Aint Tuff, updated rockabilly funkiness of Fast Way of Living, blistering guitar workouts like Strange, plus some of the best damned covers ever waxed. For a positively unique album experience, Sundazed includes the classy period sleeve design from the original Paula release.

    Oceana

Recognized by many as the premiere rock keyboardist of his generation, Derek Sherinian has performed for millions via Black Country Communion (of which he is a current member alongside Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham, Joe Bonamassa), Dream Theater, Alice Cooper, Buddy Miles and as an off-stage performer accompanying KISS. He also enjoyed tenures with Billy Idol, Yngwie Malmsteen and many others.

Favoring a guitar heavy rock based approach to fusion ala one of his musical heroes Jeff Beck, his newest release, Oceana once again displays the power and energy Sherinian creates in the studio, setting him apart from most jazz fusion ensembles in the process. He displays the rare combination of being a musical chameleon, while maintaining his signature style in no matter what genre he is playing in. With Oceana, the stage is set for Sherinians inspiration to be propelled in to the mainstream.

Sherinian has carved out a niche for himself in the progressive metal scene. He has attracted the best players on Earth to his solo album sessions, some of whom include luminaries Al DiMeola, Steve Lukather, Yngwie Malmsteen, Slash, John Petrucci, John Sykes and Zakk Wylde. With Oceana, again an assemblage of some of the most talented players to ever strap on a guitar join Sherinian in the studio.

Steve Lukather once again collaborated with the keyboardist for the tracks Mulholland, Euphoria and Seven Sins. Former Planet X guitarist and fusion legend Tony MacAlpine laid down performances for Five Elements and Mercury 7. The one and only Steve Stevens is featured on Ghost Runner and the title track Oceana. Black Country Communion band mate Joe Bonamassa makes an appearance as well on I Heard That, while Doug Aldrich performs on El Camino Diablo. Simon Phillips performs all drums on Oceana, while Jimmy Johnson laid down the bass on all tracks outside of Ghost Runner and the title track which features Tony Franklin.

The 1970s saw the creation of keyboard legends, when titans including Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman and Jon Lord were superstars. It was a time when talent on the keys was not only appreciated, but celebrated in popular music. With Oceana, perhaps a rebirth is upon the precipice of change for the Santa Cruz-raised, Berklee School of Music educated Sherinian to witness a new dawn where keyboardists once again are heroes. Inevitably, it is only a matter of time before Sherinian is recognized as the premiere rock keyboardist of this generation.

    Had To Cry Today

Blues-rock guitar wizard Joe Bonamassa can make a set of electric six-strings burn and wail, but like many such guitarists, he still requires focus for it to be truly special. Such intense focus is a hallmark of Had To Cry Today. While some guitarists squander notes, Bonamassa makes each one count whether he's engaging in country-flavored picking (the late, great Danny Gatton was clearly an influence), blistering rock-edged blues, or turbulent, inspired jamming. Had To Cry Today delivers on Bonamassa's previous promise in a big way.

Shine A Light: Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad

In March 2016, singers Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles bound train at Chicago's Union Station with the hope of reconnecting with the culture of American railroad travel and the songs it inspired. Winding along 2,728 miles of track, the pair recorded songs while the train paused to pick up passengers. In waiting rooms and at the track side in St. Louis, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Alpine, El Paso and Tucson, they set up their recording equipment, performing classic railroad songs while keeping one eye on the train, bounding back aboard just before pulling out for the next town. After four days crossing the country, they pulled into Los Angeles at 4:30am, recording their final song in Union Station at dawn, just as the first birds began to sing.

The resulting album Shine A Light: Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad takes listeners along on that journey and will be released September 23 on Cooking Vinyl Records. The album features the perfectly matched voices of Bragg & Henry and captures the varied atmospheres and environments in which they recorded-from the close proximity of soft furnished sleeping cars to cathedral-like ambience of waiting halls built to hold thousands of passengers. Containing thirteen songs originally recorded by legendary singers such as Lead Belly, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers and more, the album reveals an often forgotten but integral part of America's musical heritage.

    That Lonesome Song

Jamey Johnson is a successful songwriter on Nashville's Music Row, who has authored hits by George Strait, Trace Adkins, George Jones and Joe Nichols. That Lonesome Song, Johnson's debut album as a performer, is a happy throwback to the outlaw country of the 1970s, with his gruff, character-filled vocals surrounded by a small, rocking combo including pedal steel, organ and fiddles. Rather than the polished soft rock of so much contemporary Nashville product, That Lonesome Song is a rough and ready honky-tonk album that compares favorably to Waylon Jennings and early Steve Earle. Highlights include Mowin' Down the Roses and the celebratory Between Jennings and Jones.

    God's Problem Child

'God's Problem Child' is Willie's first album to debut all-new songs since 'Band of Brothers' in 2014. It includes 13 new songs, including seven recently written by Willie and Buddy Cannon, his longtime collaborator and producer. The album's title track, penned by Jamey Johnson and Tony Joe White, includes vocals by both writers and the legendary Leon Russell (on what may be Russell's very last recording). Closing the album is He Won't Ever Be Gone, a song written by Gary Nicholson that pays tribute to Willie's outlaw country comrade, Merle Haggard.

Willie Hugh Nelson is an American musician, singer, songwriter, author, poet, actor, and activist. The critical success of the album Shotgun Willie (1973), combined with the critical and commercial success of Red Headed Stranger (1975) and Stardust (1978), made Nelson one of the most recognized artists in country music. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound. Nelson has acted in over 30 films, co-authored several books, and has been involved in activism for the use of biofuels and the legalization of marijuana.

    Honky Tonk Heroes

According to legend, it was at Willie Nelson's Fourth of July picnic when Waylon Jennings drunkenly promised a nobody named Billy Joe Shaver that he'd record a whole album of his songs. Apparently it wasn't until Shaver threatened physical violence on Jennings (in front of a Nashville studio full of people) that he finally made good on his promise, although Jennings had only recently been granted full artistic control by RCA. The result was a stunning achievement: 1973's Honky Tonk Heroes was the defining record of the anti-Nashville Outlaw movement--the term came after the album--and a cornerstone in country music history. Featuring bare-bones production and plainspoken, hard-nosed lyrics that celebrated personal freedoms and simple pleasures, the record was a far cry from the demure Nashville Sound. In each other, Jennings and Shaver had found a kindred spirit, and together they rewrote the country rulebook. - Marc Greilsamer
