All We Love We Leave BehindAll We Love We Leave Behind is the latest album from Converge. Once again recorded and mixed by guitarist Kurt Ballou at his renowned Godcity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts, All We Love We Leave Behind is a no-frills Converge album that sees the band-which also features vocalist Jacob Bannon, bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller-eschewing fancy production techniques in order to create seventeen songs that work as a cohesive whole yet can also stand on their own. There's no artificial distortion, triggers, or Auto-Tune on this album, Ballou explains, it's all organic, it's real sounds that capture the way the band performs live.
From the classic rock-inflected, guitar tapping madness of Sadness Comes Home to the technical acrobatics of Aimless Arrow and relentless assault of Shame In The Way, this is an extremely varied album that has enough sonic shifts to captivate each listener's attention. It's always been important for us to have a lot of dynamics in our music because no one wants to listen to a million miles an hour all the time, Bannon responds when asked about the melodic mid-tempo groove of a song like Coral Blue. I really enjoy that song, it has a lot of twists musically that aggressive songs don't usually have and that's something we take pride in.
Lyrically Bannon approached All We Love We Leave Behind by once again writing about his own personal experiences, however there's no question that this time around his vocals are more direct and decipherable than they've been in the past. This is a personal record and all of the songs tell their own stories, Bannon explains. Every song is rooted in real life, documenting what I have experienced over the past few years. Correspondingly the title of the album is an apology letter to everything he has had to leave behind in order to pursue his path in art and music. Bannon explains that he feels like it's important to acknowledge these sacrifices in order to be a self aware individual.
All of our albums are emotional but I feel this is our most potent album to date, Bannon continues. For me a songs like 'Predatory Glow' and 'Empty on the Inside' have a tone and resonance that communicates in a new way for our band, he adds, chalking up this ability to the fact that the group have become better songwriters by spending so much time on the road and in the studio perfecting their craft. Success to me is creating something that's moving and fulfilling and I truly feel both of those things when I experience this album from start to finish.
Converge have always been the type of band that never fit into one subculture and the band credit that to the fact that since their 2001 landmark album Jane Doe they haven't had any member changes. I think because it's been the same four people for the past five records we've been able to really get comfortable with each other and develop our own personality, Ballou explains. I don't listen to much music outside of what we've recorded so I think we're more influenced by our own history of playing together than what's currently happening in any scene.
In other words when Ballou explains that Converge is the kind of band who have always existed between worlds, it's not just lip service. We don't have one typical type of listener but they tend to be intelligent people who can make up their own minds about things. That works to our advantage because they're willing to go on this journey with us and follow along with whatever twists and turns we take them on, he summarizes. Ultimately All We Love We Leave Behind may not be the most straightforward musical journey you'll embark on but it's one that you'll revisit over and over again to relive prior experiences and simultaneously create new ones. The Dusk In Us (Pre-Order)Five years since their last release, Converge return with The Dusk In Us: a brutal but beautiful album that shows the band's artistic evolution while still capturing their classic sound.
The ninth full-length from the Boston-based heavy-music innovators-vocalist Jacob Bannon, guitarist Kurt Ballou, bassist Nate Newton, and drummer Ben Koller-The Dusk In Us proves to be both dark and hopeful, abrasive and melodic, devastating and powerfully cathartic.
In recording The Dusk In Us, Converge once again worked in Ballou's renowned Godcity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts. Produced by the band and mixed by Ballou, the album matches its raw energy with a subculture-crossing inventiveness that's earned Converge longtime reverence within the punk, metal, and hardcore scenes.
One of Converge's most dynamic and avant-garde albums to date, The Dusk In Us unfolds with an uncompromising honesty born from "writing about experiences in my life and working through the complexities of those things through song," as Bannon explains. On the album-opening "A Single Tear," pummeling drums and caustic riffs form the backdrop to strikingly vulnerable lyrics like "When I held you for the first time/I knew I had to survive." ("'A Single Tear' is about becoming a parent, and the perspective and strength it can give," Bannon notes.) With its abrasive guitar work and menacing undertones, "Under Duress" brings a tortured howl to lyrics channeling what Bannon describes as "my emotional reaction to the complex world in which we live." A frenzied blast of pure fury, "I Can Tell You About Pain" offers what NPR recently hailed as "hardcore-fueled extreme music that simultaneously elevates and destroys." And on the seven-minute-plus title track to The Dusk in Us, Converge deliver a slow-building, quietly haunting epic of ethereal beauty.
Converge formed in Massachusetts in 1990, then made their debut with 1994's Halo in a Haystack. Soon regarded as pioneers within the aggressive music arena, the band had a major breakthrough with their landmark album Jane Doe-a 2001 release praised as "iconic" by the A.V. Club (who also noted that Jane Doe "reaches canonical status with every re-listen").
The Dusk In Us arrives as the follow-up to 2012's All We Love We Leave Behind, an album that Consequence Of Sound called "as skull-cleaving as it is beautiful" and that made its way onto Pitchfork's Best New Music list. While The Dusk In Us finds Converge defying boundaries and pushing into new sonic terrain, it's also a natural progression for a band that's long thrived on making music that both challenges and connects. "Our only goal is to create something that moves us and resonates with us emotionally," says Bannon. "For us, it's simply a new album about new chapters in our lives. We are a very 'human' band-always have been-and our songs are all rooted in our real-life experiences. The Dusk In Us is that new chapter, just as previous records were before that."1. A Single Tear

DissociationExperimental metal outfit the Dillinger Escape Plan have announced a new album, Dissociation, out via Party Smashers Inc./Cooking Vinyl America. Among the producers who worked on the album was Converge's Kurt Ballou, who mixed it at GodCity in Boston. Along with the announcement, the band have shared the record's first single, "Limerent Death." In a press release, guitarist Ben Weinman called the track one of his "all-time favorite DEP songs."
In the same press release, the band - which formed in 1997 - announced that Dissociation is "potentially" their last release before they go on an "extended hiatus" when they finish touring. In a new interview with Noisey, Weinman (who is an original member of the band) elaborated on the decision. He said, "I think in some ways we wanted to pull a 'Seinfeld' and go out while we're still on top."

Nothing For Us HereCult Leader are the next evolutionary leap forward for three-quarters of Gaza, arguably one of the best metallic bands of the last decade. After the early 2013 dissolution of the aforementioned band, remaining members Michael Mason, Casey Hansen, and Anthony Lucero were joined by bassist Sam Richards to form this brand new beast.
Nothing For Us Here is a complex crusher as you would expect. Brilliantly heavy, technical musicianship complimented by Anthony Lucero's newfound brutal vocal delivery (previously he played bass in Gaza). All of it coming together as an unconventional tangle of metal/hardcore/punk wreckage. Daughters (Awaiting Repress)This isn't technically Daughters' final album, but after recording, half the band quit, and whatever the remaining members (vocalist Alexis Marshall and drummer Jonathan Syverson) come up with in the future probably won't sound much like this. In a February 2010 interview with Noisecreep.com, Marshall all but says so while discussing the new album: [Former guitarist] Nick [Sadler] wrote a lot of the stuff on there, and he was really looking to make it accessible, and see how it fared... There are definitely parts of the record that were written to see how people will respond, which is kind of disappointing.
If Sadler's name sounds familiar, it's probably from the decidedly non-Daughters-like charms of his other group, Fang Island. While he's not officially credited as a songwriter-- the songs on Daughters are attributed to the entire group-- Sadler is listed as a co-producer, which might explain the album's relatively less abrasive sound. Relative to other Daughters records, at least: Those hoping for the abrupt spasms from the group's 11-minute debut, or the slightly less abstract math essayed on Hell Songs, are going to be sorely disappointed when they drop the needle on The Virgin. Most of the song's elements-- the frantic double-timed drumming, the insect-like chatter of the guitars-- are familiar from older Daughters' tracks. Its verse-chorus structure, on the other hand, isn't. And neither is Marshall's vocal transformation into a smooth and confident David Yow impersonator. Even the song titles are streamlined. While these moves might seem like capitulations of some sort, the band doesn't pull any punches because of them.
In fact, this refinement actually serves to focus Daughters' energies. There's still room for flashes of the manic fretwork and double-bass drum damage of old in tracks like the thick and brutal The Dead Singer, or Our Queens, a song that's equal parts fractured mathcore and fist-pumping punk anthem. That said, pummeling hook-filled songs like the The Hit or Sweet Georgia Brown are the new norm. The moves made here are no different than the recent pop moves made by equally uncompromising bands like the Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, and Torche-- each of those bands still sound like themselves, but they're also open to change and wholly willing to evolve into something else, fan backlash be damned. It's just a shame Daughters couldn't survive this transformation. As I said earlier, hardcore Daughters lovers will probably have plenty of bones to pick with this album. For everyone else, Daughters is a feast to be savored.

Shadow of the Sun
Comes With 7 Featuring Lead Single "Animal" & Vinyl-Exclusive B-Side "Fadeaway"
Moon Duo began work on their latest album during a period in which they
faced a curious new reality. Freed from deadlines and expectations, and suddenly
off the road for a stretch, Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada found themselves
each experiencing strange shifts in their perceptions of reality. Like the beginning
of an acid trip, or the edge of dusk, when shadows converge mysteriously with
light, life began to slip into a surreal dream, and then back, suddenly, without
warning. Unstable in these strange shadows and light, the band turned to music
to tether themselves to a kind of working sanity.
Shadow of the Sun is the result of a few months of wrangling with this new unsettling
way of being. Working both in a dark basement in Portland, and above
ground in sunny San Francisco, these new sounds and songs veered dramatically
from groove to groove, revealing sonic textures the duo had not previously
explored. The song "Night Beat," with its woozy dance rhythm, is an attempt at
finding joy and acceptance on this new, shifting ground, while "Wilding" plays
off the familiar Moon Duo sound, taking refuge in a repetitive, grounding
riff-scape. Elsewhere the band gives itself entirely up to the trip, cruising along
on the fuzzed rhythms of "Slow Down Low" and "Free the Skull," crashing into
the clenched-teeth herky-jerk of "Zero," and floating down, down, down, on the
narcotic mist of "In a Cloud."
To further coat the album in a fog of stoned confusion, the duo decamped to
Berlin to mix with Finnish beat-meister Jonas Verwijnen of Kaiku Studios. There
they managed to entirely reverse the clarity of the album, increasing the overall
focus, and creating an unorthodox argument for sanity through extreme negation
of proper technique and conventionality.
The result, at the end of the trip, is the album Shadow of the Sun.1. Wilding

InheritanceThe Last Bison march forward with their full-length debut album Inheritance. The critically acclaimed seven-piece folk enclave transports listeners into the untamed heart of Virginia with sweet melodies and intricate instrumentation. These elements converge and yield the band's self-proclaimed mountaintop chamber sound.

In addition to the four songs from their Inheritance EP, the full album boasts another seven thoughtful sonic ponderings. With vivid lyrics, first single Switzerland echoes the beating heart of a world traveler seekingn shelter from the winter cold. Rotten Thing To SayBurning Love is a group from Toronto with a chip on their shoulder and electric blood in their veins; their output a desperate, venomous and informed rock n' roll fury that sways and swaggers somewhere between hardcore punk and the darker side of blues gone wrong.
After the sudden demise of the now legendary Cursed, enigmatic frontman Chris Colohan picked right back up where he the band last left us, but this time collaborating with the members of Our Father, comes back to the table with a band that had a decidedly different musical approach and direction.
Rotten Thing To Say was recorded by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou at his infamous Salem, Massachusetts-based Godcity Studio. The album was mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side. The recording and the production of Rotten Thing To Say shows an extreme improvement over the bands past recordings. Vocals are clearer which amplifies their vicious and venomous delivery. RemembranceRemembrance is the Software Recording Co. debut from Baton
Rouge's Suicideyear (born James Prudhomme). Written and
produced between Florida and Louisiana during the summer and
fall of 2013, Remembrance recalls those southern U.S. landscapes
and Prudhomme's experiences across eight songs equally
intimate, intoxicating and mercurial.
We first fell in love with Suicideyear by way of his Japan mixtape, a
remarkable convergence of ATL trap beats and mid-late century
American minimalism that turned and twisted more than a few
heads. Software's own label head Daniel Lopatin was privy to an
eerily similar convergence at an All Tomorrow's Parties festival one
year earlier in which two performers, Big Boi and Terry Riley,
converged at a nearby Burger King. When James revealed his
childhood adoration for Speakerboxxx, we knew it was on.
Prudhomme wrote Remembrance while reflecting on themes of
love and loss against the backdrop of the deep American south he
calls home. Remembrance deals with letting go, Prudhomme
explains. The name stems from my attempt to accept the loss
and difficulty of the past year without dwelling, instead trying to
James' experiences of reflection and resolution led to the vivid,
emotionally charged production that makes up Remembrance.
Alive with an idiosyncratic sense of melodic space, his repertoire
eschews a topical palette for a personal aesthetic that offers a
visceral love letter to abstraction. Prudhomme references both
forms we know to exist ("Caroline", "U S" and "When You Sleep")
and speculates on how they can be newly realized ("I Don't Care
About Death Because I Smoke" and "Hope Building A").
Remembrance proves a mature turn for Prudhomme without
discounting his wisdom - and experience - already beyond his
years. His obsessive focus on construction, attention to detail and
elusive self-reflection is embodied in a music devoid of language.

Recommended RecordRecommended Record: As a title, it's a confident statement for the band's third album, their most accomplished, instant and joyful so far; a side-step from the freewheeling jams of their previous release, leaping into a more concentrated pop-group sensibility whilst still maintaining the twists, turns and swerves that characterize the band sonic adventures.
Whilst the distinctive hushed vocals and intricate guitar interplay that has become the unmistakable I.H.B. identity remain intact, a fantastic convergence and melding of new influences has emerged; from the pounding garage rock of 'Go Magic!', to the Beatles-y groove of 'Lower', to the almost Kraftwerk-with-guitars style of 'Piano Drone', displaying little trace of the homemade, zero budget recording process.1.
