    Capuchin Swing

Analogue Productions' Blue Note and Nat King Cole Reissues WIN A Positive Feedback 2010 Brutus Award!

One of McLean's more underrated albums from a plethora of Blue Note releases, 1960's Capuchin Swing finds the bebop alto saxophonist in fine form on a mix of covers and originals. While McLean's future fascination with Ornette Coleman's free-form innovations can be sensed in some solos here, the majority of the album is in a classic hard bop vein. Like contemporaries Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, and Lee Morgan, though, McLean doesn't just churn out pat jam-session fare, but comes up with consistently provocative charts and solos. Eschewing any ballad cuts, McLean focuses on mid- to fast-tempo swingers and blues. Standouts include originals like Francisco and Condition Blue and choice renditions of Just for Now and Don't Blame Me. McLean enlists a sparkling lineup of hard bop stars, including trumpeter Blue Mitchell, pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor. Mitchell particularly impresses, matching many of McLean's own inspired flights with his supple and progressive playing. Along with other fine Blue Note titles like Jackie's Bag and Bluesnik, Capuchin Swing makes for a great introduction to McLean's extensive catalog.-- Stephen Cook

    Soulville

Ben Webster, wrote the jazz historian J. E. Behrend, was two men in one: in fast pieces he was a musician with a throaty, croaking vibrato, while in slow ones he was a master of erotic and intensive ballads. In this compilation of both his own works and standard numbers with the promising title of Soulville, 'Big Ben' shows the gentle and the rougher sides of his nature. The album starts things off with a few good and honest blues numbers, but it's in the classics Lover Come Back To Me and Makin' Whoopee that the very heartbeat of the Age of Swing can easily be discerned.

    Straight From The Heart

Ann Peebles' climb up the career ladder was rather more conventional than spectacular in the tough, rough days of rhythm and blues. She was first discovered when she appeared in Memphis nightclubs, was given a break by the big-band leader Gene 'Bowlegs' Miller, and landed her first top hit with the celebrated song I Can't Stand The Rain.

Towards the end of the Seventies she made a well-timed retreat just before the outbreak of the highly commercialised disco wave, only to return many years later with a revival of her old songs. Her album from 1972 has certainly not mellowed with age. Her singing is sharp and soulful, and comes right from the heart (Slipped, Tripped And Fell In Love). The beat is powerful, throbbing, young and fresh (What You Laid On Me) or surging and groovy (How Strong Is A Woman?). The arrangements come across as sophisticated and well balanced, yet do not baulk at harsh attacks from the winds nor from the use of Hammond and Hohner keyboards, which were so popular at that time. Melody, singers and big band are airy and finely interwoven (Somebody's On Your Case), while a fusion of soft swing and snappy acerbity (I Pity The Fool) rounds off this album which is filled with pure emotion, heart and soul.

    A Very Kacey Christmas

Kacey Musgraves will release her very first holiday album, A Very Kacey Christmas featuring Leon Bridges, Willie Nelson & The Quebe Sisters via Mercury Nashville. Produced by Musgraves, Misa Arriaga and Kyle Ryan, the album features four festive original tracks, co-written by Musgraves, as well as covers of eight holiday favorites.

Working on my first Christmas album has been one of the most enriching musical experiences I've ever had and I can't wait for everyone to hear it, said Musgraves. I really wanted to create a whimsical throwback holiday record, one that evokes feelings of nostalgia and simpler times. I think that the fine musicians and brains that were a part of this project have helped me create a body of music that can be added to people s classic collections.

To Musgraves, holiday music has always had a great combination of pop sensibilities and melodies, and when she began to work on the album, she knew she wanted to create something unique. It s been an exciting experience for her to watch these songs come alive. It would have been easy to simply copy old versions of these songs that have been around forever, but it was very important for us to build arrangements that are totally new and very me.

Inspired by Bing Crosby, the Andrew Sisters, Nat King Cole and the classic sounds of the 40s, 50s and 60s, 'A Very Kacey Christmas' features the Grammy Award-winner's charming take on classic standards, as well as four original tracks to put her personal perspective on the holidays. There can be a touch of sad feelings and memories during the holiday season for a lot of people so I knew when I went in to write I wanted to include all the emotions this time of year can bring out. It's tough to decide what the overall sound could be described as but Musgraves says it's part Western Swing sprinkled with bits of classic pop, hazy Hawaiian moments and child-like fun, all coming to a nostalgic and melancholy end.

All New Mastering By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio, Cut At 45 RPM

Double LP Pressed On 200-Gram Vinyl At Quality Record Pressings!

Deluxe Gatefold Jacket With Redesigned Artwork

Ray Brown, Gene Harris and Gerryck King are spectacular in this 1984 recording. Red Holloway (tenor sax) and a rare appearance by the great Emily Remler (guitar) round out the original musicians.

This is a completely new mastering and pressing of this famous release. Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio did exceptional mastering work for this new double LP, cut at 45 RPM, and pressed by none other than the world's finest LP manufacturing plant, Quality Record Pressings. Gary Salstrom, QRP's general manager and master plating technician, plated the lacquers, and lastly we redesigned the artwork for this deluxe gatefold jacket presentation.

This album is important as an early milestone in pianist Gene Harris' second career. Harris, who had led the popular Three Sounds in the 1960s, had been living in obscurity in Boise, ID, for several years before he was urged by bassist Ray Brown to come to the West Coast for some recording sessions. Harris became a permanent member of Brown's regular trio for quite a few years before launching his own quartet. He had lost none of his technique, soul, or swing in the interim, as he shows throughout this fine release. Seven of the eight numbers (highlighted by 'Exactly Like You,' 'Teach Me Tonight,' and 'Sweet Georgia Brown') feature Brown, Harris, and drummer Gerryck King playing soulful bop, while 'Mistreated But Undefeated Blues' adds guitarist Emily Remler and the tenor of Red Holloway. An excellent effort.

    Wait 'Til Night

Cooly G returns with Wait 'Til Night , an album of sensitive, lo-fi bedroom music, it s lyrics sketching dreamy scenarios of seduction, lust and sex. The moody South London house of her debut album 'Playin Me' and her DJ sets has given way to a near-horizontal, sometimes melancholy and highly original take on R n B. The tracks swing effortlessly with no-fuss musical arrangements that are filtered through reggae sound system culture and US R n B in equal amounts, with a slight hint of dark synthpop wound throughout. The pace has come down from the deep, tribal house she's known for so far, with the only constants that run through the album her intimate vocals and smokey synths cross-hatched with her characteristic broken rhythmic sense. Opening with title track, Cooly coos about a date, over an infectious synth lead that wouldn't sound out of place on a Depeche Mode song. 'Like A Woman Should' is twilight music, synths rolling out like clouds over pulsing drums, while the vocals whisper invitations. 'Your Sex' is a fantasy with synths and surprisingly stabbing, hooky and distorted rhythm guitar. 'I Like' feels like the opening of an especially dreamy jungle track stretched into a full pop song. 'Dancing' rolls out drums and a mini guitar figure into a gently dizzy waltz, while 'Quick Question' plays out the scenario after the dance. 'Want's' barely-there song structure of drum and occasional bass with a wiry synth lead, is accompaniment to a near-whispered vocal. The pace steps up with the smouldering 'So Deep', with a deep synth bassline and a muscular hip hop beat. '1st Time' is all depth charge bleeps, guitars and piano. 'Freak You' is spacious and guitar driven, with Cooly beaming in directives through a distant voice transmission. The album's final honest, angry and forlorn track, 'The 3 Of Us', comes down hard on an absent parent, a full stop on the romance that the album narrates. It also reveals Cooly G as a skilled rap artist, something she s kept hidden until now, with double-time flows casting off a missing babyfather. Wait Til Night finds Cooly G casting her net wider than her debut album, with songs that are more confident, accessible and stylistically consistent. The album comes laced with Cooly's unique honesty and charm and is sure to win her new fans with her catchy melodies, slow-jammed stories of blighted urban romance, and engaging lack of pretension.

Ghost To A Ghost/Gutter Town (Awaiting Repress)

With his own new label, Hank3 Records, and the sense that he has thrown off the chains holding him back creatively, Shelton Hank Williams III, aka Hank III, is coming out swinging in 2011 with the release of four records. The unprecedented launch, in a distribution partnership with Megaforce Records (MRI), features a broad range of music that bridges more than one head-thumping genre, a familiar theme that true Hank III fans have embraced for years. Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town, a double-album set, is a straight-shooting country collection, flavored with Hank III's trademark hellbilly sound, and heavily weighted with Cajun influence (especially on Gutter Town) and an ambient, lonesome mood, and a few very special guests.

All three projects were recorded at The Haunted Ranch, Hank III's home and studio that lies on the outskirts of Nashville, a fitting place since the town has never really known what to do with this grandson of the American icon. He finally parted ways with Curb Records January 1. I have musical freedom. I'm able to say 'Here's my record' and I don't have to go through a million different channels just to put out a song, he says. It's all me now.

Hank III wrote the lion's share of the songs that appear on Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town. The players are Andy Gibson on steel guitar and banjo, who also aided in its recording, David McElfresh on fiddle and mandolin, Zach Shedd on standup bass, Daniel Mason on banjo, super-picker Johnny Hiland on guitar, Billy Contreras on fiddle, and Rory Hoffman on accordian. Guest appearances include the mythical Tom Waits on the haunted Fadin Moon from Gutter Town and on the Ghost to a Ghost title track, Alan King of Hellstomper, Les Claypool of Primus fame, Dave Sherman, Troy Medlin and Hank III's dog Trooper.

Cuts such as Gutter Town, Ridin The Wave and The Devil's Movin In on Ghost to a Ghost and Goin to Gutter Town, The Low Line and I'll Save My Tears on Gutter Town highlight both the excellent musicianship on the records, and Hank III's unmistakable, confident vocals. The release of all three projects represents a new birth for Hank III, and he's happy to have the chance. Megaforce Records has helped me with my vision to do something that never been done before, he says. They're handling my distribution, and I wanted to flood the market and do everything different. I wanted to come out of the gate strong. I'm opening up the mind a little bit and bringing some different styles together.

    All Kinds Of You

Ryley Walker is a 24 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Chicago. His debut album All Kinds Of You, will be released worldwide via Tompkins
Square in 2014. Having kicked around Chicago's experimental free/noise music scene for several years, Ryley recently turned to a folk-rock sound inspired by some of
his heroes, among them Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley, and Bert Jansch. The result is a poised and accomplished debut album, recorded in Chicago by
    Cooper Crain (guitarist/keyboardist in Cave).

The West Wind, Ryley's debut 3 song 12 EP released in November, features The West Wind from the forthcoming album, and two B sides: A Home
For Me and Sweet Little Betsy (w/Daniel Bachman). The piece received praise from UNCUT, NPR, BBC, Rolling Stone and many other outlets.

With the charming swagger of jazz-folk troubadour Tim Buckley and the resonant, full picking style of Bert Jansch, 'The West Wind' comes from Walker's
first widely available release, a three-song 12. With acoustic guitar in hand and a voice like browned butter, Walker swings and sways in a lush string-and-piano arrangement right out of Buckley's 'Starsailor'; it slowly picks up to a swirling gallop without bucking the rhythm. - NPR Music

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited edition 180g LP brings these 11 songs to life and out of the clouded, foggy sonic environment in which they've remained for more than two decades. For the first time, T Bone Burnett's stripped-back production functions as it should. Namely, Los Lobos sound as if they're playing at a small, sweaty neighborhood joint late on a Sunday night for an audience of locals, friends, and family.

The group's uncanny ability to switch between instruments and effortlessly play each as if it's their innate right-listen to the seamless fashion in which electric and acoustic guitars, marimbas, organs, saxophones, harmonicas, and percussion create strikingly memorable soundscapes-comes to light amidst a warmer, airier, more organic and deep-black background.David Hidalgo's sweet, honeysuckle timbre, he and Cesar Rosas' overlapping tremolo guitars, and stacks of interwoven rhythms jump with vibrant electricity.

Shifting into storytelling mode, Los Lobos use By the Light of the Moon as an opportunity to meditate on everyday America and channel the fate of normal communities. Issues of faith, mortality, love, disillusionment, and melancholy inform narratives that are on the same socially conscious level as those of period-era Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. As for the songs, they crackle, waltz, shuffle, dance, tremble, and kick. The band almost dares listeners not to care.

Whether leaning into twangy two-step country-rock ("One Night In America"), dual-guitar shootout rockabilly ("Shakin' Shakin' Shakes"), swinging jump R&B ("Is This All There Is?"), tequila-spiked East Los Angeles-style rock ("Set Me Free (Rosa Lee)"), searing Latin-tinged blues ("My Baby's Gone"), or poignant gospel-lined folk ("River of Fools"), Los Lobos' Tex-Mex gumbo continually impresses and delights.

Don't pass up one of the best releases of the 1980s and one of Los Lobos' definitive statements. You'll never hear a better pressing. Boleros, rancheros, and more await!

    TODD RUNDGREN'S DEBUT MASTERWORK!!!!

First Time Audiophile Vinyl & Gatefold Cover Presentation

Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray from the original Bearsville Records tapes

As founding member of the premiere late sixties power pop rockers Nazz, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter
and producer Todd Rundgren was barely in his 20's when he began his long solo journey with success as one of the music
industry's most prolific and celebrated rock artists.
His first solo album Runt showed a dazzling array of songs, displaying not only his rock and roll side but ventures into
jazz, R&B, eastern and blues. With help from his friends Hunt and Tony Sales, the power trio nailed one of the finest albums
of the classic rock era and also catapulted Todd Rundren's marquee as a singer/songwriter with his smash hit single We
    Gotta Get You A Woman.

Ever the rock journeyman, Todd Rundgren had already produced, mixed or played on albums by legendary recording
artists like The Band and Paul Butterfield. Always called on to bring his musical genius for others, his initial hit recordings
that make up the Runt album show how versatile and important the artist is. Check out his burning guitar riffs on album
opener Broke Down And Busted or the gritty country blues feel of Once Burned, plus the New York funk/jazz of I'm In The
Clique, three fan favorites that truly have stood the test of time.
Known to write a hit ballad more than a few times in his career, Todd goes on record early here with one of his finest
tracks ever with his brilliant Believe In Me. Followed closely by his masterpiece We Gotta Get You A Woman, even more pop
sounds continue with his classic medley Baby Let's Swing/The Last Thing You Said/Don't Tie My Hands, and the haunting
Beach Boys/Gregorian Chant feel of There Are No Words.

    New Morning (On Sale)

Sublime 1970 Album Among Loosest, Jovial of Dylan's Career

Includes Hit Single If Not for You and The Man In Me, Featured in the Film The Big Lebowski

Dylan's Phrasing and Piano Playing Parallel Efforts of His Crack Backing Band

Stunning Reissue Boasts Phenomenally Open Sound: New Morning Has Never Enjoyed Better Fidelity

The album might have saved Bob Dylan's career. At the least, it proved the icon still relevant, and his wits still in tact. And it immediately followed what remains the artist's biggest disaster, the yet-unexplained and forever puzzling Self Portrait, a nearly unlistenable attempt that caused many to wonder whether Dylan had lost his mind. If intended as a joke, it bombed, making the sublime New Morning all the more important to restore faith in the singer's creativity and songwriting prowess. It did all this and more, and stands as his finest studio effort during a five-year span.

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this restored analog version spotlights the open, woozy sound that welcomes wholeheartedly Dylan's piano, several eager guitars, female background singers, Al Kooper's organ, and snappy drumming into a world of their own. New Morning remains one of Dylan's loosest and jovial affairs, the instruments retaining an off-the-cuff sensibility relating to a nightclub atmosphere or live stage feel. On this reissue, notes naturally dangle and fade, allowing the playful vibes and humor to come through like never before. Consequently, the album can be experienced with a new perspective. Wider grooves mean more information reaches your ears.

"Many of the songs seem to have been made up on the spot, with confidence in the ability of first-rate musicians to move in any direction at any time," wrote Dylan expert and cultural critic Greil Marcus in his original review for the New York Times. "The riffs, inventions, and studio jams of New Morning have their own personality the full joy of anticipating the right move and the exhilaration of hitting it square and bouncing off a chord into a new lyric."

These observations hold true today, for the 1970 effort claims a daring flair Dylan rarely exhibited on albums before or since. Enthusiasm and excitement surround his singing, and his work on the 88s underlines the liberating arrangements. Offbeat and eclectic, the record frolics and swings, with the Bard and his crack band pursuing jazzy steps ("Sign on the Window"), shuffling spoken-word experiments ("If Dogs Run Free"), and soulful rock ("The Man In Me," used to wonderful and prominent effect in the Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski).

Throughout, Dylan's phrasing communicates joyousness and simplicity seemingly carried over from the stripped-down John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline. The record's dominant sentiments trace to the lead track, "If Not For You," one of the singer's all-time greatest singles, stitched with country threads and warmth that pervades everything that follows. Yes, New Morning may lack the iconic status of some of Dylan's better-known records. Yet the underdog stature makes repeat listens all the more rewarding.
