Searching For Sugar ManThe story remains one of the music world's most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album Cold Fact is the basis for Searching For Sugar Man, a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming From Reality - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly "Sugar Man" and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk.
Searching For Sugar Man, a Red Box Films & Passion Pictures Production in association with Canfield Pictures & The Documentary Company, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the U.S., was a big hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival where it won the world documentary audience award and a special jury award, and then went on to screen at SXSW, Tribeca, and the Sheffield Doc Fest. The film opens in New York, Los Angeles, and London (via Studio Canal) on July 27th and will play in other cities throughout the coming months. For a complete release schedule, visit the film's website: www.SearchingForSugarManMovie.com.
Back in the late '60s, Rodriguez was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, Cold Fact bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled Coming From Reality and produced by Steve Rowland, Rodriguez drifted into obscurity, even being subject to some fantastic rumors of a dramatic onstage death.
Cold Fact took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid-era South Africa. Banned by the government, the album became a country-wide phenomenon over the next two decades, and the soundtrack to a resistance movement of liberal African youth. Back in Detroit, working in construction and renovation (he also ran for mayor), Rodriguez was totally unaware that he was not just a folk hero but a household name thousands of miles away.
Decades later, two South African fans, Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew-Strydom set out to find out what really happened to their hero, and their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they'd heard. Their story forms the basis of Searching For Sugar Man.
Both sides of the story, Rodriguez's life in Detroit and the subsequent impact of his music in South Africa, proved fascinating to Stockholm-based documentary filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. His short documentary films for Swedish Television's international cultural weekly show Kobra became the basis for such films as Men Who Stare At Goats (George Clooney) and The Terminal (Tom Hanks). The evolution of the financing, production, and filming of Searching For Sugar Man is as fascinating and complex as the life of Rodriguez himself.
"I describe myself as 'musico-politico'," Rodriguez said recently. "I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time. Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The placards of the 1970s in the United States read things like: We Want Jobs and Stop the War - I was looking at the music from a working class perspective that was relevant, as it turns out, to the kids in South Africa."1. Dear Miss LonelyheartsLong Beach blues rockers Cold War Kids present their fourth studio album, Dear Miss Lonely Hearts. Marking the band's first new material since the release of 2011s Mine Is Yours, the album was recorded in their California studio with producer Lars Stalfors (The Mars Volta, Matt & Kim). It's the first release to feature former Modest Mouse member Dann Gallucci, who replaced the Jonathan Russell earlier this year.
Lead singer Nathan Willett said of the new album: "We were shaken up, ready to let certain songs go further than before by trying new styles and arrangements, while keeping others sparse and caring more about the finished product and less about how we got there."
The album will be preceded by lead single "Miracle Mile. The track features ragtime piano in the mould of earlier Cold War Kids tracks, with crashing drums and guitar building to a minimalist pop chorus showcasing Willett's expressive vocals.

UNIM-ATO-7910xJ Roddy Walston And The Business
Essential TremorsNo stranger to the south, lead vocalist, guitarist and pianist J. Roddy Walston was brought up in the southern church hometown of Cleveland, Tennessee before relocating to Baltimore where he made the acquaintance of lead guitarist and vocalist Billy Gordon, bassist and vocalist Logan Davis and drummer Steve Colmus, now collectively known as The Business.
Essential Tremors, the band's third release, is the most far-ranging and eclectic album in the band's history. Their blend of classic rock & roll emphasized by rapturous hooks, riffs and rhythms, coupled with Motown flavor and funky charm brings out a pure Bacchanalian splendor. J. Roddy's arresting voice and thumping piano playing travels directly from your eardrums to your bone marrow as he keens, croons and intones words and music that are at turns lunatic and mystic. Their relentless touring and trademark spirited live performances has helped J. Roddy Walston & The Business grow from a grass roots movement into a band with a loyal and expansive following.
Joined by born and bred Valdostan Mark Neill, the Grammy-winning producer and engineer of Black Keys' Brothers and Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit), J. Roddy and co. manifested eleven immersive and relentless tracks that now comprise their third album Essential Tremors. From the explosive raw power of "Heavy Bells" to the hymnal reverberations of "Sweat Shock" to the contemplative, soulful call of "Boys Can Never Tell", Essential Tremors demonstrates the band's growth into becoming one of the forerunners in rock 'n roll today.1. Ode To Sunshine (Awaiting Repress)The rousing debut of this San Diego quintet impresses mightily. Delta Spirit's rough barroom pop is its own creature, with jangly pianos, rattling drums, and scruffy acousic guitars making a thrilling ruckus. - Spin
"Ode To Sunshine is brimming with gritty, staggering soul that floods the gap between
the Stones' R&B-inflected early oeuvre and Cold War Kids' world-weary keening."
- The Onion AV Club
Classic-era Rolling Stones. An amplified, rocking version of `60s protest folk. The
raw spirit of indie rock. All of these comparisons have been made in attempts to
describe Delta Spirit, the southern California 5-piece who might just be one
of the most important new bands of the decade.
Ode To Sunshine was originally released by Rounder records in 2008 and exemplified
the band's forward thinking and genre-bending music. Considered a hallmark

Kid RockKid Rock is the self-titled sixth album by Kid Rock, originally released in 2003. It was critically acclaimed by Rolling Stone, which named it one of the 50 Greatest Albums of 2003. This is the last album to feature material in the genres of rap metal and hip hop before Rock crossed over to more country rock. Black Bob and Jackson, Mississippi were recorded for his 1996 album Early Mornin' Stoned Pimp in 1995, but were left off the album. Feel Like Makin' Love, Cold and Empty, Intro, Hillbilly Stomp and Run Off to LA were recorded for the demo sessions for 2001's Cocky, but did not make the cut has well. Built In SunBuilt In Sun is a new project from Joe Plummer, drummer for The Shins, Cold War Kids
and Mister Heavenly. Joe has also produced and co-recorded an all drum project
called Hew Time (with Dale Crover and Coady Willis from The Melvins), released on
Joyful Noise in 2014. Joe has also toured and recorded with Modest Mouse and The
Black Heart Procession drums and percussion over the course of the last 10 years.
Built In Sun started during touring breaks between The Shins "Port of Morrow" and
Cold War Kids "Hold My Home" releases. Built in Sun began as an instrumental idea,
with inspirations landing somewhere between John Cales "Fear", the punk vibe of the
Wipers and John Reis, and his favorite soundtrackists John Brion and Clint Mansell.
After the first instrumental mixes were finished (with the help of Richard Swift) he
decided that the tunes and melodies just might be cool enough to ask a few of his pals
to sing. Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession) was the first. Within a day Pall sent
back John John, with solid scratch vocals. Another song came the next day, with new
ones following almost each day afterward .There was no use to ask anyone else.
The songs really came together with the addition of Pall's vocals and it felt great to
collaborate with him again. With this, Built In Sun was complete1. Honeybear

After the critically acclaimed release Deep Fantasy (2014), White Lung return with their fourth album, Paradise.
Vocalist Mish Barber-Way, guitarist Kenneth William and drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou, reconnected in Los Angeles to work with engineer and producer Lars Stalfors (HEALTH, Cold War Kids, Alice Glass). In October of 2015, White Lung spent a month in the studio, working closely with Stalfors to challenge what could be done with their songs. "I wanted it to sound new. I wanted a record that sounded like it was made in 2016", says William of his mindset. Bringing all the energy, unique guitar work and lyrical prowess Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NME have praised them for in the past few years, White Lung curated their songs with a new pop sensibility.
Mixed by Stalfors and later mastered by Joe LaPorta, Paradise is their smartest, brightest songwriting yet. "There's this stupid attitude that only punks have where it's uncool to become a better song writer," says Barber-Way, "In no other musical genre are your fans going to drop you when you start progressing. That would be like parents being disappointed in their child for graduating from kindergarten to the first grade. Paradise is the best song writing we have ever done, and I expect the next record to be the same. I have no interest in staying in kindergarten."1. Dead Weight

From Indian Lakes return with their 3rd full length Everything Feels Better Now. The new full length was recorded with producer
Kevin Augunas (Edwards Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Cold War Kids, Needtobreathe) at the legendary Sound City Studios
a.k.a. Fairfax Recording. From Indian Lakes took a very different approach on this record with songwriter and singer Joey
Vannucchi recording all instruments and vocals for the album. "I feel like I had to write a ton of songs before I could get to this
sound, took time off from doing anything really. When it came time to record I wasn't sure what to expect. Every time I think I've
gone as deep as I can, I peel back skin and discover another layer that's been there waiting. That's what this album is" Vannucchi

My Head Is An AnimalOf Monsters and Men is an amiable group of day dreamers who craft folkie pop songs. With the Icelandic group's bright, trumpeting single Little Talks winning over one blog at a time, Nanna Bryndis Hilmarsdottir and her bandmates (co-singer/guitarist Ragnar Raggi Þórhallsson, guitarist Brynjar Leifsson, drummer Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson, piano/accordion player Árni Guðjónsson, and bassist Kristján Páll Kristjánsson) are well on their way to becoming citizens of the world.
Nanna, who began as the acoustic act Songbird, recruited extra hands to bolster her sound for a solo show. She liked how her vocals commingled with Raggi's, so they started writing songs together and in 2010 morphed into Of Monsters and Men. As victors of 2010's Músiktilraunir, the new group earned a slot on the influential Iceland Airwaves festival later that year, followed by Seattle's radio station KEXP posting Little Talks from a Living Room Session filmed there, setting the telltale ripple effect in motion. By the summer of 2011 Little Talks hit #1 in the band's native country, and people around the world seemed to be listening to us, marvels Raggi. The band was asked to perform again at Iceland Airwaves 2011, where KEXP then anointed the group as easily the most buzzed about band.
Though their reach is growing broader, the group's appeal has remained distinct. Their music is as fantastical as it is pretty. For inspiration, they often reference random stories they've read. The chanting, tribal Six Weeks was inspired by the true tale of American frontiersman Hugh Glass, seemingly left for dead after a bear attack. As for the swelling, epic From Finner, it's about a whale that has a house on its back says Raggi on which people travel across the ocean, exploring different places and having adventures. Little Talks, explores loneliness and insanity, while Love Love Love ruefully ruminates on heartbreak. If you listen to the lyrics, they're not as uplifting, he says. But our music is meant to be fun to sing along to.
Their full-length debut, My Head Is an Animal immediately reached #1 in their native Iceland and will now see its worldwide release via Universal Records. The album features production by Of Monsters and Men, Aron Amaarsson and Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, Cold War Kids) while Craig Silvey (Florence + The Machine, Arcade Fire) handled mixing duties.
