    Cosmic Slop

Another classic LP from the P-Funk camp, originally released in 1973. The title track is an absolute stone classic funk jam and Nappy Dugout is another heavily sampled nugget (most notably on A Tribe Called Quest's Ham And Eggs). George Clinton gets heavy too, in the harrowing Vietnam War spoken word March To The Witch's Castle. Get down with another killer Funkadelic title.

    Starsailor

Originally released in 1970, Starsailor is the most unique and uncompromising release of Tim Buckley's brief but productive career. Combining jazz and avant-garde elements with folk-rock and Buckley's acrobatic vocal performances this album is one of the most experimental singer-songwriter records of all time. Though it was a commercial failure at the time of its release Starsailor has since become a sought after cult classic.

    Dusty In Memphis

Ranked 89/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Britain's greatest pop diva Dusty Springfield was the finest white soul singer of her era and this landmark Atlantic Records album from 1969 is a masterpiece, a perfect marriage of pop and soul...contains her top 10 hit Son Of A Preacher Man plus several other hit singles and classic tracks...

Originally released in 1969, the concept for Dusty In Memphis was to take England's reigning female soul queen to the home of the music which had inspired her. Produced by Atlantic's Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin and engineered by Tom Dowd, the record's highlights include Son Of A Preacher Man, So Much Love, Breakfast In Bed, Just One Smile, I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore and Just A Little Lovin'. Springfield is backed by a crack band that had previously worked with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, King Curtis and Elvis Presley among others. The musicians - collectively known as the Memphis Cats - include guitarist Reggie Young, bassist Tommy Cogbill, drummer Gene Chrismann, pianist Bobby Wood and Bobby Emmons on organ and electric piano. Songwriting contributions came from, among others, Randy Newman, Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Dusty Springfield is one of the finest white soul singers of her era, and this is the undisputed proof.

One of the great rock vocalists of the 1960s, Tim Buckley drew from folk, psychedelic rock, and progressive jazz to create a considerable body of adventurous work in his brief lifetime. La Dusseldorf

Upon the breakup of legendary Krautrock duo Neu!, drummer Klaus Dinger formed La DÜsseldorf with his brother Thomas and keyboard player Hans Lampe. This, their self-titled debut, was recorded in 1975 and is a staggering mix of Dinger's trademark motorik rhythms, glammy synths, pulsing organs and urgent guitar work that altogether creates a sound that, at times, predates both punk and post-punk, no small feat. Featuring their European hit single Silver Cloud, La DÜsseldorf's debut record is classic Krautrock on par with the best offerings of Neu!, Kraftwerk and Can.

Viva is the second release from Klaus Dinger's post-Neu! group, La Dusseldorf. Originally released in 1978, Viva is a stunning combination of washed out synthesizers, swirling guitar work and Dinger's trademark motorik rhythms. Featuring the classic Cha, Cha 2000, Viva is another fine effort from one of Krautrock's legends and stands as a testament of just how gloriously ahead of their time the German progressive rock scene of the '70s really was. An essential record.

Sandy Bull's third release is a mere two songs spread over a looped path of colored time. E Pluribus Unum takes his past triumphs and brings them higher, to an acid-singed multi-colored height. At the end of the day, Bull's prowess on the guitar here wins over everything and the result is an answer to the psychedelic wonder-bands. The instrumental answer to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

Funkadelic's second LP, originally released in 1970, is another straight up masterpiece from the stoniest, strangest funk and R&B group of all-time. Moondog

Moondogs debut release, originally on the Prestige label, came out in 1956, long after hed become a legendary New York City street performer. The blind Kansas native showcases his talent for the minimal and avant-garde here, with compositions driven by percussion and Japanese-inspired melodies, complimented by street sounds, recitations, and animal noises. Bizarre even for todays standards, its a wonder this was released over a half-century ago. A brilliant debut.

This is the second Moondog LP, originally released on Prestige in 1956. It continues the NYC street performers exploration of minimalist composition and field recording, mixing percussion and sparse melodies with piano solos, street sounds, and monologues. Surprisingly accessible despite its avant-garde nature, bridging the gap between the familiar and the bizarre. Another all out masterwork from one of 20th century Americas most unique minds.

    Second Edition

The second album from John Lydon's post-Sex Pistols group is widely considered to be their magnum opus. Combining such diverse influences as krautrock, dub, post-punk, and the avant-garde, Second Edition is four sides of harsh and uncompromising, yet danceable, music. While not the immediate influence and sensation that Never Mind The Bullocks was, this record is certainly John Lydon's finest artistic achievement.

    River

River was a looser and rootsier affair than Terry Reid's first records, taken from a sprawl of sessions in London and California that generated enough material for several albums. The very looseness that gives the effort some charm is the same quality, however, that keeps it from being a major work. The songs mostly sound unfinished, as if they're friendly jams in which Reid and the musicians (including, most notably, David Lindley on half the album and percussionist Willie Bobo on the title track) are working out some song ideas or twisting around some riffs. It often brings to mind those parts of songs where the likes of Van Morrison, Tim Buckley, or Robert Plant sing-scat improvised-sounding vocal passages. The difference is that, for the most part, those singers used such sections to embellish solid songs. On River, the quasi-stream-of-consciousness vocal ramblings are the songs. The first four of the seven songs are very much in a funky, laid-back blues-rock groove, prominently featuring Lindley on steel, slide, and electric guitars. Reid, and the album itself, really begin to find more of an individual voice on 'River,' where beguiling Latin-Brazilian elements are introduced in the guitar, melody, and rhythm. The final two cuts, 'Dream' and 'Milestones,' back Reid's vocals only with acoustic guitar, and have a romantic melancholy that likewise makes them highlights of this highly personal but uneven record.

    Nina At Town Hall

One of Nina Simone's finest recordings, this 1959 Colpix LP features the unique singer/pianist performing classic versions of 'Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair,' 'The Other Woman,' and 'Wild Is the Wind.' With supportive work from bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Al 'Tootie' Heath, she also sounds fine on a few instrumentals. 'Summertime' is performed twice, once as a vocal. From the start of her career, Nina Simone carved out her own unique niche, meshing together her classical piano technique with folk singing, civil rights protest lyrics and jazz. All of those elements are in evidence on this highly recommended set. Original artwork.

    Judee Sill

Judee Sill's debut album (as well as the debut of the Asylum label) heralded a major new talent in the airy, contemporary folk world of the early '70s. The album employed the production skills of Sill's ex-husband Bob Harris, as well as ex-Turtle and ex-Leaves Jimmy Pons, and Graham Nash (on the album's sole single, 'Jesus Was s Crossmaker'). Judee Sill featured all original compositions, many of which relied on Sill's own brand of cosmological Christian imagery to make their point. By turns spare and lavishly orchestrated, there is still a cohesive feel to all of the album; her lyrics are exceptionally poetic and her voice is smooth enough to give every song a shimmery feel. The essence of the music is folk, the execution pop: the songs feel like a comfort blanket, a statement of hope from a troubled soul.

Originally released in 1971, America is one of the artistic high points of John Faheys career. And yet, for nearly 30 years it was not heard in its entirety, as what was originally intended as a double album was pared down to a single LP. 4 Men With Beards is proud to present the complete America double album, released on vinyl for the first time ever. Public Flipper

Public Flipper Limited was originally released in 1986 as a double LP of live material culled from 1980-1985. The sound quality and playing are both a grimy, distorted mess, which suits the band just fine. Always alternating between the endearing and the abrasive, Flipper left no room for the middle ground of like. The album title is a shot at John Lydon and his alleged plagiarism of Flipper's artwork for his own PIL and it proves that Flipper was never opposed to alienating its audience, no matter how sanctified. Harsh, art-rock classics from one of San Francisco's most important post-hippy era bands.
