The Look of Love is the fifth album by Diana Krall in a row that Tommy LiPuma, Verve Music Group Chairman, produced. LiPuma is also known for his work with Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, Joao Gilberto, Natalie Cole and Shirley Horn. Regarding Claus Ogerman, Diana Krall said that, together with Johnny Mandel, he has been her favorite arranger/composer since she was seventeen. Ogerman had an important role on albums recorded by Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Ogerman also had been working for years together with LiPuma, for the first time on George Benson's outstanding album Breezin'. Since Claus Ogerman featuring Michael Brecker in 1990, the two had gone separate ways. But when Diana Krall was on tour in Munich, LiPuma arranged for her to have lunch with Ogerman. That is how the pianist/singer, the arranger/composer and the producer began to work on a common project: The Look of Love.
Diana's songs were arranged by Claus Ogerman who also conducts the London Symphony Orchestra. The Look of Love gives an impression of unity despite the fact that it contains material from a lot of different sources: e.g. Cry Me A River by Julie London, Love Letters by Nat King Cole and jazz-standards such as Dancing in the Dark by Arthur Schwartz (music)/Howard Dietz (text), I Remember You by Victor Scherzinger/John Mercer and 'S Wonderful by George and Ira Gershwin.

Silver KobaltIn between work for Björk, The Cinematic Orchestra and Anoushka Shankar, the prodigious Hang player and percussionist Manu Delago has inked a deal with Tru Thoughts to release his own new album, 'Silver Kobalt'. The ambitious LP draws lines from pop to the avant-garde.
Aged just 30, Manu Delago is the world's leading Hang player (with 5 million YouTube views for his DIY performance video "Mono Desire") and possesses equally virtuosic skills as a percussionist and drummer alongside ever maturing instincts as a songwriter and producer. The accessible yet startlingly original sound of 'Silver Kobalt' draws on the experience and ideas built up by the London based Austrian native across a high-flying and diverse career to date. From overachieving teenaged rock bands, through extensive classical training; from his exploits at the cutting edge of art pop as the lynchpin of Björk's band, to a London Symphony Orchestra commission which saw him playfully subverting their expectations; this endlessly curious artist has been honing his own style rich in melody, wit and invention.
The title, 'Silver Kobalt', plays on the strangely linked themes of magnets, goblins and human behaviour. Throwing a pair of small magnets in the air one day, Delago recorded their frantic, thrumming sound for the track "Plus Minus"; he also experimented with the detuning effect of a magnet on the Hang. Magnet fascination deepening, he read that some rare elements are permanently magnetised, of which one is cobalt. Then, up popped the pleasing story that cobalt was actually named after the German word for 'goblin' ('kobold') by hapless silver miners who suspected little kobolds had taken all the silver and left them with this substance. Further reading revealed also that all humans contain cobalt which we need to survive. "I really enjoyed this string of information", he says. "As well as this fun idea of little goblins within us, it really struck a chord because I had been thinking a lot about attraction and repulsion - what makes people magnetically drawn to some things, away from others - and that is a strong theme in the music. 'Silver Kobalt' tied it all together."
Tying together the many sonic threads is co-producer Matt Robertson (Björk, The Prodigy, The Streets, Bat For Lashes), following his work on Delago's acclaimed 2013 LP 'Bigger Than Home', the record on which he began to truly develop his current sound. This is a sound that revolves around the unique timbre of the Hang, but encompasses much more, from acoustic percussion, bassoon, piano and chimes to multi-layered beats and a variety of synths.
The hypnotic, nursery rhyme-like Hang melody of lead single "Disgustingly Beautiful" feat. Isa Kurz opens the album; the affecting vocals of Kurz (also the pianist and violinist on record and in the live outfit Manu Delago Handmade) ride a bass-heavy undercurrent, with added beats from Grammy nominated producer j.viewz. On the spiky yet melodically catchy "Plus Minus", the aforementioned magnet theme is extended into the composition, with two main lines that are pulled together and pushed apart. "Drumheart feat. Anil Sebastian" is pristine bassy pop lifted onto another plane by the haunting, androgynous vocals of the up-and-coming singer.
Stealthily moving into a fascinating instrumental section, "Down to the Summit" (which, unusually, uses the Indian drone instrument Surpeti for harmony) leads to the punchy, subby Hang sound and four-handed piano tinkering of "Wandering Around" and on to the joyful "Simon is Psychling", which calls to mind a DJ with speakers on a bike, circling a big field, one lap bringing a bassoon solo, another an industrial noise-fest. Restoring calm, "Sun In The North feat. Isa Kurz" is a potent lyrical snapshot from a day on the beach on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, its rhythms inspired by playing with Indian musicians there. Cobalt gets its glory in the shape-shifting "Chemical Reaction feat. Rahel", and the lovelorn "Dearest" was conceived on tour in Australia where Delago captured the fairytale vocals of celebrated Australian folk singer Katie Noonan. "Almost Thirty", in Delago's words, "draws a bow from Eurotrash Dance Music to Austrian folk music, with some brainy immature rhythm ejaculations in between"; a banger that skirts the border between strange-town and club-land, it is a thrilling way to see out both his third decade on Earth and the album.
Having been given his first drum kit aged two, also learning the accordion and piano in childhood, Manu Delago was a professional performer by his teens, but it was in 2003, when he began playing the Hang - an enchanting new sound sculpture from Switzerland - that he discovered his passion for writing music. On graduating from the university Mozarteum in Innsbruck, he moved to London and studied at Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Trinity College of Music. With this pedigree, the lessons learned from collaborating with his heroes, and influences from The Prodigy to Bon Iver, Michael Jackson to Stravinsky and Beyonce to Rage against the Machine, his music is as impeccably realised as it is impossible to classify. Inner Fire (Awaiting Repress)The Souljazz Orchestra return with another essential mystical odyssey in February 2014 as they release their brand new studio album, Inner Fire, on Strut. Recorded using the Orchestra's signature analogue techniques at their studio HQ in their home city of Ottawa, the new set continues their expansive musical journey as they effortlessly fuse intricate Eastern influences, Afro beats, Egyptian jazz, Latin styles and spiritual elements into their unique musical melting pot. The secret to the band's sound remains a true openness to global music of all kinds and the individual experiences of the Orchestra's band members. "We all have very wide tastes, we're always digging for new sounds, and we've had the chance to work with master musicians from all over, from Nigeria to Rwanda, from Cuba to Haiti, so each band member ends up bringing different vibes and ideas to each of our albums," explains keyboardist Pierre ChrÉtien. On Inner Fire, the different vibes come thick and fast. Side One features "Kingdom Come," a fierce afro-jazz stomper influenced by North-East African big band sounds, "One Life To Live," a haunting highlife arrangement on the importance of seizing the day, "As The Crow Flies," a soaring bossa-tinged piece and "Black Orchid," a bumping fusion of cinematic soul-jazz with Cuban bolero sounds. The flip brings us the firing salsa dura party jam "Agoya" before the ritual chant of "East Flows The River," a spiritual jazz hymn using Eastern modes. The tempo ramps up once more on "Sommet En Sommet," a heavy 12/8 afro-jazz piece influenced by Guinean popular music. Percussionist Marielle Rivard then takes the lead on vocals for a scorching personal rendition of Gary Bartz NTU Troop's 1971 classic, "Celestial Blues."The Souljazz Orchestra have become the undisputed leaders in their field since their first album back in 2005, breaking through with the huge international hit "Mista President" on Do Right! in 2007. Since then, the band has remained tight with their original line-up of Pierre ChrÉtien (keyboards), Zakari Frantz (alto sax & flute), Steve Patterson (tenor sax), Ray Murray (baritone sax), Marielle Rivard (percussion) and Philippe Lafrenière (drums). With their on-stage chemistry and stellar musicianship, the Orchestra's live shows have now become the stuff of legend, sparking instant parties wherever they play. 2013 was already a massive year for the band with their heaviest touring schedule to date. After touring almost non-stop for five years, the band hibernated for over a year to focus solely on writing Hymn. The result is their most thoughtful and eclectic album to date. Innermost Limits of Pure Fun, with its whimsical, philosophical "California" title, was a groundbreaking project in the history of sports footage. Filmmaker George Greenough was unencumbered by any commercial reasons for designing boards, boats, or in his wave riding technique, a true SOUL SURFER if there ever was one. With the means, and ideas, to use underwater camera gear that had not been previously used - and still rarely used to such great effect - Greenough's two late '60s cinematic efforts were the maximum effect, in the effort of communicating the feel of surfing to the viewer. Some of the non-surfers overwhelmed by the beauty of his work within "Innermost" came to George and offered their help for the follow-up, to be titled Echoes. These ho-dads from England were better known to the world as Pink Floyd.
In choosing who to soundtrack his debut masterpiece, Greenough went with the most dynamic band to record during the surf instrumental era of the early '60s, Capitol Records 45 r.p.m. artists The Dragons, who released "Troll" in 1964. The single was actually an excerpt from a soundtrack recorded for the early Dale Davis film Strictly Hot. What set it apart from the reverbed surf crunchers of the early '60s was its beyond "Pipeline" instrumentation. Keyboard riffs meshed fluidly with bass harmonica, sophisticated percussion, snap drums, and a fuzzy guitar ripping through bass lines so thick you would swear there was an orchestra behind them. That made sense, since the father of some Dragons was leader of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Carmen Dragon.
By 1969, The Dragons had progressed within a world ready for jazz improvisation in rock. Some of them had toured with the "Good Vibrations" era Beach Boys. It was with great intuition that George Greenough chose The Dragons for this soundtrack to "Innermost Limits of Pure Fun," for they had been itching to do a project where they could really let themselves GO. And there, you get it, within the package before you. What you're dealing with are surf instrumental musicians on a par unmatched, a few years after the trend, getting a chance to really dig in, in order to be involved at the level of media George Greenough was shaping.

'Fanfare as a word represents a fanciful showing, a bodacious movement of energy, a celebration of sound, Wilson explains. Something to signify an arrival, a special occasion. In this case, it's also the immense opening song that builds into a multilayered cinematic poem from the artist to channel the perfect love song through his piano. As a declaration of intent, it's a powerful statement.
From the initial idea of the record, I knew I wanted a concert Steinway piano to be the centerpiece--the beating heart--of Fanfare. I was going for this sort of widescreen sound. I wanted strings, horns, vibes, voices, solos, improvisation and a full orchestra on some of the tunes. Having that 9-foot Steinway was central to achieving the sound that I wanted.
Fanfare was made in Los Angeles over a 9-month period. Featuring vocal and instrumental contributions from heavy friends like Graham Nash, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty), Wilco's Patrick Sansone, Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith and Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, the album is a celebration of friends and family. Additionally, Wilson and British folk legend Roy Harper co-wrote several songs on the record.
Sometimes Wilson seems to need a pinch to believe his good fortune: There are an awful lot of wizards on this album. Wizards of all ages and life experiences. All these amazing voices and musicians. There is a high degree of musical prowess and pedigree here. Cross-generational musical sharing and passing down traditions is very important to me and something that must continue. This is the way you keep the Fanfare's blowing, this is how you keep the energies interacting.

From the moment you hear the bristling boom-bap chorus on album-opener
Totally Mutual Feeling, it's apparent that Lushlife's third full-length finds the
Philadelphia rapper-producer at his most introspective. Themes of isolation and
mortality permeate Ritualize, a cinematic hour-long odyssey co-produced by
enigmatic production trio, CSLSX (pronounced Casual Sex) and featuring
contributions from Ariel Pink, Killer Mike, Freeway, Marissa Nadler, RJD2, and
more. With CSLSX at the boards, an entire universe opens up for Lush, where
the pulsating Juno synths of '80s LA night music sit side-by-side with
gorgeously propulsive indie-leaning jams, and low-fi soul burners too. The
resulting LP is a post-blog-era joint that seems to exhale the whole of the 20th
century in a single, fascinating breath.
After toiling over two self-produced LPs in the last half-decade, I felt
compelled to bring on an outside production team for Ritualize, Lushlife
(born Raj Haldar) explains. Not only did I want to broaden the musical
palette, but I felt like the group production effort would give me a depth of
focus on lyrical content and emotion that I hadn't previously been afforded.
After a chance encounter with CSLSX, who had been quietly self-releasing
low-fi dance gems to remarkable organic blog buzz, the newly-formed team
set out on a three-year journey that would eventually yield their new joint
album. By the time work began on Ritualize, Lush had already been riding a
small wave of critical acclaim for his 2012 full-length, Plateau Vision, an album
that made several year-end lists and was described by the Sunday New York
Times as a melding of captivating rhymes with audacious, gorgeous production.
Still, with Ritualize, Lushlife and CSLSX seem to have gone one deeper.
From album cut, The Waking World, which finds Lushlife spitting thorough
sixteens from the vantage of Mark David Chapman lying in wait for John
Lennon, to Incantation, a song that's as much inspired by Allen Ginsberg's
Howl as the general, street-level anxieties of urban life, Ritualize is nothing short
of a step forward. For proof, look no further than Toynbee Suite, a 10-minute,
4-movement rap epic that explores the strange Toynbee Tile meta-art
conspiracy that has captivated Philadelphians for decades. As the centerpiece
of the album, Toynbee Suite was the subject of a 2013 documentary, and
itself represents the combined work of 20+ musicians, including RJD2, Nightlands,
Yikes the Zero, and a full chamber orchestra. On the other hand, the
CSLSX-produced, Hong Kong (Lady of Love), a collaboration with weird
music godhead, Ariel Pink, is a sparse yet powerful four-on-the-floor ode to LA,

Death PeakClark returns this spring with Death Peak. The album deftly weaves together the various threads of his extensive work, intertwining euphoric melodies and visceral rhythms of warehouse rave with newer vocal and choral elements.
Death Peak exposes the tension in Clark's musical vocabulary I love finding the fulcrum between opposites - I want my tracks to have sharp teeth, but you want to stroke them too. They sound ancient, but beamed in from the future, soft, corrosive. Album track 'Peak Magnetic' is a club-ready 4 am affair - vigorous, singular, hard to define. As Clark explains I wanted the kick to sound like some massive natural event, barely controlled, a boulder bouncing down a hill with birds tweeting around it. A complete mudball of a pulse that anchors everything to it through sheer mass. It makes me think of outdoor springtime raving. 'Catastrophe Anthem' features the voices of a children's choir eerily chanting the mantra, We are your ancestors. Clark has rarely used vocals before, but here every song has an element of human voice. Nearly all the tracks have some form of vocal recording on them. I only realized this late in the recording process. I get hypnotized by the human voice - the most perfect synth. Vocals can be a bit of an awkward hat, that producers wear to try and get attention. Death Peak voices are the opposite of that. The vocal elements are just another instrument in the mix. It's taken me awhile to get to this level of confidence with it.
Recently he released a split 12-inch with label mates Mark Pritchard & Bibio and worked remixes with the likes of Nils Frahm and Max Richter. Significantly, Clark has turned his hand to scoring. He released the foreboding cinematic soundtrack to the 2016 BAFTA nominated Sky Atlantic series 'The Last Panthers' and composed a score for Macbeth at the Young Vic theatre. Late in 2016 he composed 'Enter The Void' for especially The Echo Society orchestra, conducted by Joe Trapanese (M83 & Daft Punk collaborator) and performed at the historic Ace Theatre, LA. Clark signed to Warp in his late-teens. His studio sound has evolved and matured over two decades; although he would say he's only just starting. His amorphous industrial noise has ever-grown and influenced producers, dancefloors and festivals around the world.LP 1

Turnstiles (On Sale)By 1976, Billy Joel had proven his merit as an auteur of California-based singer-songwriter pop-rock. On Turnstiles, the legend focuses his attention on more ambitious matters: Making an album whose scope and range dwarf that of his previous work, and shot his star into the stratosphere. Encompassing everything from urgent rock to soft pop and saloon fare, Turnstiles is a classic of major proportions.
Mobile Fidelity has gone back to the original master tapes to present Joels encompassing music the way it was always intended to be experienced: Intimate, detailed, expressive, warm. The records widescreen sonics are at last properly cinematic, flush with colors, textures, and atmosphere.
Progressing away from sensitivity, Joel casts his eye towards broader horizons. For him, that meant moving from the West Coast back to his native New York and embracing the citys doo-wop, Broadway, and R&B heritage. Joels diversity comes through in a spectacle of memorable tunes, including the infectious All You Wanna Do Is Dance, acerbic Angry Young Man, and gorgeous Ive Loved These Days.
Still, no song better illustrates the allureand breadthof Turnstiles more than Say Goodbye to Hollywood, bathed in the sort of fabulous Phil Spector sound, huge drum echoes, and Brill Building orchestral sweep that Joel grew up on. Similarly, the sprawling ballad New York State of Mind clearly states the singers vision and mood. On the definitive track, Joel luxuriates in full string accompaniment and soulful saxophone playing that gives the pop standard its foundation. Not for nothing did Joel insist on keeping his touring band for the album, a decision that resulted in the firing of the records original producer.
Supported by talents such as arranger Kenny Ascher, guitarist James Herb Smith, and percussionist Mingo Lewis, Joel succeeds in wrapping his head around a rich swath of American pop music, stopping by way of New Orleans, Kansas City, Memphis, Chicago, and other cities on his way from California back to the Garden State. While lacking the fame of the subsequent The Stranger and 52nd Street, Turnstiles is in every way their equal.
Finally, the delicate nuances of Joels phrasing, pregnant pauses, and introspective emotion can be experienced in three-dimensional fidelity. In addition, the spectrum of the orchestras power and finesse, ravishing poignancy of the lyrics, and bittersweet qualities of the melodies bloom with unforced immediacy. The previous veiled sonic character and stultifying dryness have been corrected, presenting Joel and his crack band with illuminating precision and feeling.
Turnstiles has never sounded betterand it never will.
