The founding fathers of American goth-rock, CHRISTIAN DEATH released their debut, Only Theatre of Pain, on Frontier Records in March 1982, and that landmark album has had an enormous influence on goth, death-rock, dark-wave, metal and even industrial music scenes all over the world, shaping the approach of more bands than can be counted. GoetiaMYSTIFIER is an extreme Metal pioneer from Brazil, formed in July of 1989 by the bassist Beelzeebubth. When Beelzeebubth met Meugninousouan (vocalist), Behemoth (guitarist), and Lucifuge Rofocale (drummer), they decided to form one of the most extreme Metal bands from South American lands. After five months of development, they recorded their first Demo-tape entitled "TORMENTING THE HOLY TRINITY", with nine original songs and a cover song "Massacre" from Bathory's third album. The response was so positive that Maniac Records (a small vinyl record store from their hometown) invited the band to record two original songs for a single. Mystifier eagerly agreed. In July of 1990, the single, "THE EVIL ASCENSION RETURNS" was released. They were the first Metal band from their town (Salvador, Bahia) to release material onto a label. Following this release, some Brazilian labels were very interested in working with Mystifier. Then, in July of 1991, they recorded a promo-tape entitled "ALEISTER CROWLEY" with six fresh songs to present to other labels.
In February/1992, the hard work had paid-off and their debut album "WICCA" was released on the label Hellion Records. It is considered one of the most extreme albums to date for many true fans of Extreme Metal Music. After the releasing of their debut album, Beelzeebubth fired Meugninousouan because of his lack of interest. Asmodeus (ex-Hatred) was recruited to be the new vocalist and keyboardist. In that same time, Astaroth (ex-Calvary) joined them on the second lead guitar.
During those years, the band gained enormous worldwide underground notoriety. It drew the attention of the French label Osmose Productions which signed the band for two albums. The first was released in the November of 1993, with worldwide distribution through SPV, entitled "GÖETIA" [several months later, their debut album was also released in Europe on Osmose Productions.] The response was a European tour request from the tour promoter Insolit - and many reviews, articles, interviews, and so forth - in international magazines and radio stations. After that release, Mystifier played in many Brazilian areas to promote the new release.
Behemoth and Astaroth had to quit the band because of personal reasons and weren't interested in maintaining a band. Paulo Lisboa (who had played in Death Metal bands for years) replaced them on the lead-guitar.
Beelzeebubth was very disappointed with the Underground scene, corroded with hypocritical 'satanic christians' who were talking a lot of shit about Satanism, fascism, racism and nazi thoughts. For that reason, he canceled the release of Mystifier's third album. He composed new and powerful music. Later, in August of 1996, their masterpiece third album entitled, "THE WORLD IS SO GOOD THAT WHO MADE IT DOESN'T LIVE HERE" was released with six new tracks. It's their greatest produced and recorded material; it is totally original and different from their previous releases.
With a new lineup, Mystifier released an EP with seven fresh songs and a re-done version of "Beelzeebubth" (from the second album), on a Brazilian label, to celebrate their 10 years. The single was entitled "DEMYSTIFYING THE MYSTIFIED ONES (FOR A DECADE IN THE EARTHLY PARADISE)."
The band released their fourth full-length album entitled "Profanus" in September/2001 with 13 fresh compositions on a Brazilian label called Encore Records.

This onslaught of ever-shifting double-bass and extreme guitar riffing is considered by many to be an essential (if not the premier) example of Deicide's world-class death metal. While bassist/vocalist and bandleader Glen Benton never accepted the categorization, his band helped define the early '90s death movement with their somewhat complicated, ultra-heavy music and low, growling vocals. Legion stands out as a musically complex but familiar offering from the band. Live favorite Trifixion is indeed one of the better cuts from the release, but it's easier to consider this disc (and most records like it) as a whole. Deicide's compositions and performances are solid and serious throughout, but Benton's outspoken anti-Christian beliefs and admitted Satanism are what first brought the group attention, and what ultimately separated them from secondary contributors to the genre. This radical philosophy is stated emphatically within the lyrics of Legion -- just in case fans weren't paying attention to interviews and onstage rants. Listeners who admire death and extreme metal in all its forms are generally aware of Deicide's abilities and outspoken antisocial beliefs, so newer death metal fans will do well to start off their collection with Legion. ~ Vincent Jeffries, Rovi1. Technicolor Skull is an experiment in light and sound, exploring the psychic impact of a magick ritual in the context of an improvised performance. With Brian Butler on guitar and electronic instruments, and Kenneth Anger on theremin, their collaboration is a performance contained inside a ritual of unknown origin, tapping into occult stories that extend musical language into initiation. Hidden messages escape through gesture and light, manifesting as a one-time-only event.
Technicolor Skull performed their first West Coast appearance at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles on November 19, 2011, as part of the opening reception for Kenneth Anger: ICONS. This exhibition will showcase the films, books, and artwork of one of the most original and enigmatic filmmakers of post-war American cinema.
Kenneth Anger was born in Santa Monica, California. His most iconic works include the classic Fireworks (1947), Eaux D'Artifice (1953), Rabbit?s Moon (1950-1973), Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954-66), Scorpio Rising (1964), Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969) and Lucifer Rising (1970-81). His work has been featured at the Whitney Biennial 2006, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Centre, New York in 2009 and the Athens Biennial 2009. He lives and works in Los Angeles. Brian Butler is an artist and musician living in Los Angeles. He has been included in: Projections curated By Aaron Rose at Roberts & Tilton, Los Angeles; Bright Morning Star curated by Natxo Checa at Galeria ZÉ dos Bois, Lisbon, Portugal; Onedreamrush at Today's Art Museum, Beijing; and The 2nd Athens Biennale. Appia Kwa Bridge"I wanted to go back to a highlife feeling with this album," explains Ebo Taylor. "The songs are very personal and it is an important part of my music to keep alive many traditional Fante songs, war chants and children's rhymes."
Appia Kwa Bridge is a strident return from the Ghanaian highlife guitar legend. Featuring six new compositions, his sound is more dense and tightly locked than ever with Berlin-based musicians Afrobeat Academy, a rock solid unit since regular touring worldwide following his Love And Death album in 2010, including a string of dates for Womad. Jochen Stroh works his analogue magic once more from his base at Berlin's Lovelite Studios.
The album covers a variety of themes dear to Taylor. The title track references a small bridge in Ebo's hometown of Saltpond on the Cape Coast: "it is a tiny bridge but a place known in the town where people meet, where lovers get together." The firing, rousing Ayesama, first demoed during the Love And Death sessions, is a Fante war cry, a taunt, "what's your mother's name?"; Nsu Na Kwan, based on a Fante proverb, asks "Which is older, the river or the old road" with the sub-text to respect your elders; and the brilliant Abonsam carries the message that Abonsam (The Devil) is responsible for evil in the world and that we should follow the Christian message.
Elsewhere, the album features a new version of highlife anthem, Yaa Amponsah, first recorded during the '20s by Sam's Trio before becoming a popular standard in Ghana, and a cover of an original track from Taylor's time with Apagya Show Band during the '70s, Serwa Brakatu, re-titled here as Kruman Dey. The closer, the acoustic Barrima, is a poignant tribute to Taylor's first wife and one true love who sadly passed away during the Summer of 2011. "Ebo wrote the song following her passing and recorded this in one take during our last day in the studio," reflects bandleader Ben Abarbanel-Wolff. "He was very emotional." Nightbringers (Pre-Order)Any band that has earned an army of devout followers through dropping seven killer full-lengths - and touring their collective ass off for sixteen years - could perhaps be forgiven for thinking they could take it easy as they wade into their eighth release. But that's just not The Black Dahlia Murder's style, and Nightbringers is testament to that. Having released their most accomplished, aggressive, and emotionally diverse music to date in the form of 2015's Abysmal, the Michigan quintet have once more pushed themselves to new heights, and the 34 minutes of searing melodic death metal that comprises Nightbringers is riveting listening. "I always feel a responsibility to the people who support this band when we start making a new record," asserts vocalist Trevor Strnad. "The pressure that comes from people being excited to hear what you come up with next can be intimidating, but it's so exciting that those people love you so much for just doing what you do. It makes you want to honor what you've done in the past, but also excite them with where you go next, and that definitely drove us on Nightbringers. Rather than meticulously plan things out or stick rigidly to any kind of template, when it comes to writing The Black Dahlia Murder prefer to let things happen organically. In the hands of guitarist Brian Eschbach - who co-founded the band with Strnad in 2001 - and new recruit Brandon Ellis (Cannabis Corpse/ex-Arsis) Nightbringers is rich with dynamic riffs that are at once fresh and classic TBDM, resulting in a collection that shifts through many moods and effortlessly incorporates various elements of extreme metal. With guitarist Ryan Knight having amicably stepped down in 2016, the addition of twenty-four-year-old Ellis to the band's ranks has helped usher in an exciting new era. "He's very professional for his age, I think he's skilled far beyond his years, and his live energy is exceptional. When Max (Lavelle, bass) joined the band he challenged a lot of us on stage to raise our personal bar, and Brandon's pushed that even further," states Strnad. "Brandon coming into the band and writing a bunch of songs was an awesome surprise too. He really took the reins, and this record is also the most involved that Alan (Cassidy drums) has been too. The way that we were doing the demos and bouncing things back and forth he had a lot of room to do what he wanted to do, and I think it's definitely a more colorful album for that. I also think as we get older the emotional content goes up. I think we better realize how to grip the listener. Personally, I try to write lyrics that are going to match each part, and kind of ramp up those feelings that we're putting across." Strnad's statements are vividly borne out by every moment of Nightbringers. For fans attending 2017's Summer Slaughter tour, the first taste of of the record came with the inclusion of the title track in their set, which has an undeniable immediacy to it, rich with hooks and boasting a "circusy, evil and playful" air. By contrast, "Catacomb Hecatomb" is suffused with tragedy, the mournful tone of its slower passages deeply affecting. This too is dramatically different to "As Good As Dead", which has some swagger to it that Strnad likens to Megadeth, or "Matriarch", described by Eschbach as a "wild, neoclassical romp" and stands as one of the most cutthroat and all out aggressive tracks in the quintet's arsenal. Upon first hearing the latter, Strnad was intent on matching its visceral intensity. "I felt inspired to write very violent lyrics to it. It's told from the perspective of a woman who is trying to have a child and not having any luck, and she goes kind of crazy and stalks this other woman who is due to have a child. She finds her moment to take it from her, cutting it right out of her stomach." While Strnad explores a variety of themes and ideas with his lyrics, they are united by the album's title, which embraces a tenet that has been central to The Black Dahlia Murder's output since the very beginning. "A lot of archaic ideas that are still upheld - such as marriage and monogamy - came from Christianity, whether people want to acknowledge it or not, and to me, death metal has always been bucking that. It's 'being-the-villain music', because we're the enemy of Christianity, the enemy of all that is good and traditional. Death metal is for free thinkers, it's for showing people the path to inner strength and operating on your own will, instead of being told what to do and living in fear, and songs like the title track and "Kings Of The Nightworld" are about leading a legion of awakened minds into battle." Following this theme also motivated Strnad to forge into ever-darker territory, even when this meant tearing things up and starting over. "I felt I needed to rise to the occasion to make as much of the blood and guts and heinousness as possible, and there was actually a couple of points where I rewrote some songs. I just didn't feel like they were dark enough, or violent enough, so I was really trying to ramp up the monstrous aspects of things, and definitely trying in different ways to take down tradition."
Rather than decamp to a single studio, the members split off when it came time to start laying down the songs - all well versed in how to get the best out of their individual performances. With former bassist Ryan Williams once again assisting, the drums were tracked at The Pipe Yard in Plymouth, Michigan and rhythm guitars in the band's practice space in Warren, Michigan [was bass tracked there too?]. Ellis then recorded his many blistering solos in his home studio, while Strnad headed to Full Force Studios on Long Island, with Joe Cincotta (Suffocation, Internal Bleeding) overseeing his sessions. For the unique and haunting cover art they turned to Kristian Wåhlin, aka Necrolord, who has designed seminal artwork for the likes of At The Gates, Bathory, Emperor and also TBDM's 2007 release, Nocturnal. "I think he's the most prominent artist when it comes to classic releases in the melodic death metal genre, and kind of bringing things full circle with it being the ten-year anniversary of Nocturnal felt right. By now people probably wouldn't have expected us to go back to him, so it's kind of a surprise, but at the same time it's a very classic cover too." With the band celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the aforementioned album by playing it in its entirety on Summer Slaughter, it has given them a moment to reflect not only on the road that has led them to here but also that which lies ahead. "When I think back to when we started the band I feel very proud of everything we've done, and I also see a lot of improvement over the years," says Strnad. "In the early songs I can hear us as kids, and then segueing into our adulthood as musicians and writers, but sixteen years in I still feel young as a band. I feel like we have a shit ton left to do, and I think we're sitting pretty with the best lineup we've ever had. I also think Nightbringers could be our finest hour yet. I feel very strongly that it will affect people, I want to get all of these songs in people's ears, and I want them to check out everything we've got on this record. There's so much variety and so many great ideas, and I think that this could take us to another place."1. Widowmaker

Fantastic Plastic (Pre-Order)The Flamin' Groovies story goes all the way back to 1965 when the band began as the Chosen Few in their hometown of San Francisco, California. After a name change and a self-released 10-inch album called "Sneakers," which sold amazingly well, the band caught the attention of Columbia who signed them up and sent them into the studio with a big budget to record their first real album, "Supersnazz," on the Epic label. Their next two albums were on Kama Sutra (home of their heroes, The Lovin' Spoonful): "Flamingo," and the now revered classic "Teenage Head." Lead singer Roy Loney left the band right after that and lead guitarist Cyril Jordan moved the group to England with Chris Wilson (formerly of Loose Gravel) taking over as frontman. They continued their style of straight ahead guitar driven rock n' roll but this time with a more 60s rather than 50s influence. A few singles on United Artists, recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales with Dave Edmunds producing, followed in the early '70s. In '76 they signed to Sire Records, who released three true gems of power pop: "Shake Some Action," "Flamin' Groovies Now," and "Jumpin' In The Night." Another lineup change ensued in the next decade with Wilson moving to England and joining the Barracudas. Jordan later formed a new band called Magic Christian while Wilson released solo albums in Europe.
Now in 2017, the lineup featuring Cyril Jordan and Chris Wilson are BACK IN ACTION, as they continue to present their own unique and infectious style of rock n roll with such cult classics as Slow Death, Shake Some Action, Teenage Head, and a new set which includes brand new songs off their new soon-to-be-released album, "Fantastic Plastic. It's hard to say just why the group hasn't gotten the attention they deserve (at least in the USA) but they're back to give everyone another chance at hearing and seeing just why those in the know consider them one of the greatest rock n' roll bands ever.1.
