    Camp

At 27, Donald Glover is one of the most sought after multi-threats in Hollywood, a former writer for the Emmy ward winning 30 Rock, a network TV gig on the NBC hit series Community, a few movies on deck including the Muppets Movie and The To-Do List, a sideline gig doing stand-up comedy and a career as a rapper, performing under the moniker Childish Gambino.

Childish Gambino has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in music. A unique blend of hip-hop with multiple genres, combined with lyrical genius, Gambino has gone from a viral cult following to a mega sensation. He has released two mixtapes, I Am Just A Rapper and I Am Just A Rapper 2 and in 2010 released his first full length of original material entitled Culdesac. In March of 2011, Childish Gambino released an untitled EP that featured the hit Freaks and Geeks. This, his first mass distributed album, Camp, will be released via Glass Note Records.

Where previous recordings have been introspective, reflecting the deepest concerns and confines of Emmy's own mind, 'S' EP looks outwards. Written in cities - Salt Lake City, Tokyo, Hong Kong, LA, New York and London - during an itinerant period in Emmy's life, the songs track the resulting personal changes and invite us to explore the rapidly advancing world around us.

"My previous recordings were a reflection of my internal world, but this is a record of me trying to engage with the outside. Over the course of travelling and touring for the last two years I inhabited many cities and landscapes. While I wrote this EP and the album that will follow, everything changed. As I wrote the songs I began to reflect more and more the world that I saw around me, incredibly bright, technologically breathtaking. I am curious about being a person in this world, and I tried to write that into the music." Emmy explains.

An impressive cohort of talent signed up to assist Emmy's latest creation. Wild Beasts' Tom Fleming joins Emmy for lead single 'Swimming Pool', a haunting siren-song that submerges us in an affluent montage, replete with rippling keys and dream laden bass.

The sweet musings of 'Social Halo' question our role in an increasingly self-aware world, the resulting social anxiety and the fleeting moments of reality that revive us from its ever quickening pace.'Solar Panels' builds to a crescendo of synthesisers as Emmy reflects on what it is that keeps us going before 'Somerset (I Can't Get Over)' seeks a lover's attention - "Come outside," she sings. "Let's talk about something that's real, like, please don't get over me."

Recording was split between LA, with Ludwig Goransson (Haim, Childish Gambino), and London, with Dave McCracken (Oh Land, Beyonce). MIA's MD Neil Comber mixed the final results.

A singer-songwriter gifted with a rare idiosyncratic charm, Emmy The Great released debut album First Love to critical acclaim in 2009 with follow up Virtue (2011) winning equally impressive plaudits. Songs that walk the line between heartbreaking fragility and bold, wit-laden observations on the human condition continue to enthrall all who hear them. Her keen observational eye has no doubt contributed to her recent success as a writer, with regular contributions to Vice and The Guardian.

The accompanying visuals were devised by Emmy herself, beginning with 'Swimming Pool's enigmatic clip, shot poolside in a decaying LA home, where the final interaction between a hologram and its owner betrays a flaw in our technological Utopia.

When Macklemore declares his music is David Bowie meets Kanye sh*t, it's a bit of an oversell on the Bowie side, but then again, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring are also honored as influences during Ten Thousand Hours, the biographical highlight that opens the Seattle rapper's vibrant sophomore release.

These arty name-drops threaten to paint the album as more obscure than it is, but even as glitch electronica and Mad Rad member Buffalo Madonna strange up the breakup number Thin Line, The Heist comes off as instant, alive, and oh so welcoming. Chalk it up to Macklemore's playful and open lyrics (When I was in the third grade/I thought I was gay/Because I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight) or the album's not so secret weapon, Ryan Lewis, the producer who earns his co-billing with a George Martin or Dave Fridmann-sized sense of purpose and an Internet kid's sense of utilizing anything and/or everything. For the music industry takeover Jimmy Iovine with Ab-Soul as guest, Lewis' production is a mix of G-Unit gangster music and a Houston hip-hop trunk rumbler, while the pro-gay marriage highlight Same Love with Mary Lambert is supported by full-bodied piano and the sound of a bittersweet marching band, all of it familiar yet twisted through a laptop with hypnotic loops and catchy hooks coming out. Gold (feeling like 500,000 sold) is joyous and bright mini-electro that feeds the positive side of the soul, while Can't Hold Us comes with an irresistible bounce, both tracks being light, lovely, and in contrast to the numbers that deal with Macklemore's addiction issues and other obstacles.

These two talented young bucks can't be contained, and hearing them offer one memorable, meaty number after another makes for an exciting listen, but this is unfiltered freshness released on Macklemore's own label, so the concepts of restraint and focus take a slight hit, leaving the is-he-Eminem, is-he-Childish Gambino, or is-he-Grieves question with no clear winner. Here, he's a mix of all of the above with some distinctive qualities, and with Lewis putting that kaleidoscope style underneath, The Heist winds up a rich combination of fresh and familiar.
