    Every musician has his area of expertise and for Chet Baker that area was the ballad. Therefore, this album dedicated entirely to ballads, gives listeners a chance to hear Baker doing what he does bestand when Chet Baker does what he does best, he does it better than any other trumpet player in the history of jazz. For this session, recorded on 30 December 1958 at NYCs Reeves Sound Studios, the poster child of West Coast cool jazz (who had just turned 29) assembled a superlative East Coast sextet that featured the unusual front-line combination of flute (Herbie Mann), trumpet (Baker) and baritone (Pepper Adams), departing occasionally from this format, however, to showcase the guitar playing of Kenny Burrell. Pianist Bill Evans, Philly Joe Jones (drums), Paul Chambers (bass), all well-known for their association with Miles Davis, and all some of the top names in jazz are also featured here, along with drummer Connie Kay of the Modern Jazz Quartet. This album represents some of the last studio work Baker did before emigrating permanently to Europe. It also includes one of Bakers own compositions, Early Morning Mood, recorded at the same studio and with the same line-up on 19 January 1959, as a bonus track.

    Forty-two years ago, Chet Baker - one of the most tragic figures of jazz who lived on the fast lane and ruined himself with drugs and alcohol - was constantly on the road from one European jazz club to another. Local rhythm groups were not always top notch so it was only logical to pick the very best from several countries for a film-music production in Italy. And it was equally logical that RCA's Italian subsidiary brought the musicians into the studio in January 1962.



    With one exception, the eight titles on this disc are all so-called standards. The two winds demand total concentration from the rhythm section while maintaining relaxed and laid-back harmonic patterns. And this is something the Italian Tommasi, the Belgian Thomas, the Frenchman Quersin and the Swiss Humair carry off with an air of nonchalance. The two ballads These Foolish Things and the only new composition Ballata In Forma Di Blues are tucked in between the other numbers and give the listener space to breathe. They are surrounded by numbers with a fast tempo, all of which demonstrate Chet Baker's and Bobby Jaspar's high standard of musicianship. And then there is Over The Rainbow, whose theme is coupled with another tragic figure of music history, Judy Garland: Chet on his trumpet conjures up pure magic in the middle section.



    Happily, these recordings - made in Rome in 1962 - are not purely restricted to collectors living in the Sixties. This re-release on LP now offers the opportunity to listen to some excellent music and to enjoy the cover - just as it was on the original recording: a priceless gem!

    About Speakers Corner



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Chet Baker had a long and complicated relationship with Italy. It was a country where he was both imprisoned and adored. His first visit there took place in 1955, during his first successful European tour. It was during this tour that the quartet's pianist, the talented Dick Twardzik, tragically died in Paris from a heroin overdose. Baker was devastated, and following Twardzik's death - for which he felt some level of responsibility - the trumpeter submerged himself in the drug world and in a self-destructive spiral which would last for the rest of his life. Baker would stay in Europe for a number of months after Twardzik's death, playing with different local musicians.


    Baker made his way back to New York in mid-1956 and wouldn't return to Italy until the 1959 trip that yielded the recordings included here. In fact, as Ezio Leoni (the musician in charge of the sessions) explained that Chet's trip to Milan took place in order to make two albums (one with strings and orchestra, the other with a small combo of Italian players). Baker was already an addict when the contract was signed, and before he could travel he was imprisoned in the States. Therefore, the sessions had to be postponed and shortly after this music was recorded Baker would be imprisoned again, this time in Italy. Prior to his Italian imprisonment he made the two albums expected of him and recorded some interesting tracks for movie soundtracks with different bands conducted by Piero Umiliani, which are presented on this LP. All of that music is also contained here, including a vocal version of "Arrivederci" which has been taken from the original movie itself and, for that reason, has some odd overdubbed dialogues in Italian.

    This session was recorded at Studio Pathe-Magellan in Paris, on Monday October 24, 1955 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.


    On October 24th only Jimmy Bond was still with Chet: Peter littman had returned to America, and his seat was now accupied by Nils-Bertil 'Bert' Dahlander, a Swedish drummer who'd accompanied Lars Gullin. At the keyboard was an almost-unknown pianist named GÉrard Gustin who'd just been signed to a contract by Eddie Barclay. Given the context, they were obliged to fall back on standards. Chet knew how to play these better than anyone. He chose eight: These Foolish Things, which stayed in his quartet's rÉpertoire for a while, and five others, which the trumpeter performs here for the first time: There's a Small Hotel, Autumn In New York, Summertime, You Go To My Head, Tenderly - and two - I'll Remember April and Lover Man - that he'd done less than ten days earlier together with Lars Gullin and Dick Twardzik, whose disappearance was still something Chet refused to accept. Given this state of affairs, the whole session exudes a kind of sadness that's impossible to put down, whatever the choice of tune or tempo.


    Never before had Chet been as totally moving as he is throughout You Go To My Head.

    In 1955 a 26-year-old Chet Baker made his first trip to Europe. Over a period of about six months, Baker toured Italy, Germany, France and Denmark.     Chet Baker was one of the representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement whose life and music appeals to the imagination of the people the most.

    Chet Baker With Strings was recorded during three sessions in 1953 with Zoot Sims & Jack Montrose on tenor sax, Russ Freeman on piano, Shelly Manne on drums and Clifford 'Bud' Shank on alto sax.

    In answer to an offer from Nicole Barclay, Chet Baker arrived in Paris early in September 1955. On the 22nd - or maybe the 23rd - he signed a contract to make seven records... (The figure was later erased and replaced by 'three', which turned out to be correct). Released after the trumpeter's return to the USA, this last volume was construed as rather a poor relation opposite the others in the trilogy, all the more so because, hurriedly drafted, the sleeve-notes did little to render unto Caesar the things which were Caesar's. Unlike the earlier opuses, this one was in no way a concept-album: it contented itself with a simple overview of Chet's Parisian associations, depending on where his fancies took him in the course of his stay. When Chet entered the Studio PathÉ-Magellan on October 25th, only one member of his original accompanying trio was still present: pianist Dick Twardzik had died of an overdose, and drummer Peter Littman had returned home after selling his kit for whatever it would fetch. Jimmy Bond and his contrabass, however, were both still there, and in the ensuing octet session Chet's melodic gifts were magnified by (remarkable) scores penned by Pierre Michelot - Chet, Dinah - and Christian Chevalier (Vline). The three pieces were mini-concertos, and the trumpeter loved them so much that he decided to do them again back in America ... but not so successfully. On November 28th Chet went back into the same studio, this time with Raymond Fol on piano, Benoît Quersin on bass and Jean-Louis Viale on drums. They recorded two improvisations: the first was based on a 1932 standard from Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz, Alone Together, while the second began with Exitus, a composition written by one of Baker's friends, Phil Urso. The performances are among the most beautiful that Chet produced during this period, along with Chekeeta - or Chik-Etah - and How about You? which put the seal on a partnership that had first come to light at the Club Saint-Germain, temporarily rechristened for the occasion: »Every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 16h30 to 19h30 at the Barclay's Club - 13 rue Saint-Benoît, Paris - Bobby Jaspar Quintet with American trumpeter Chet Baker«, read the sign. The format was stylistically ideal, leading Chet to abandon the quartet format he'd preferred up until then. To respect his next bookings, Chet had to get a stable band together, and as his pianist he chose Raph Schecroun - later known as Errol Parker - who was himself replaced by Francy Boland. Alongside him were bassist Eddie de Haas, who'd previously been with Martial Solal and Henri Renaud (the latter, in the adventure, also lost his regular drummer, Charles Saudrais, who was just seventeen. According to Jean-Louis Chautemps, »When Bobby Jaspar couldn't do it or just wanted too much, they looked for someone cheaper; and that was me. There wasn't really an audition: we were in the Tabou, I played with Chet, he said OK and, two days later, we found ourselves in Reykjavik, Iceland.« The tune Tasty Pudding written by Al Cohn and Anticipated Blues, one of the rare pieces Chet claimed to have written, were in the repertoire played by this last Baker-led formation on the Old Continent.



    Both pieces, once again, moved Pierre Michelot to pass judgement: »With ordinary means, Chet managed to play phrases of extraordinary beauty with simplicity and clarity.«

    The numbers heard on Chet Baker & Crew were among a prolific flurry of recordings Baker was involved in during the last week of July 1956 -- fresh from an extended European stay. Sessions were held every day from the 23rd through the 31st, which resulted in such classic titles as The Route, Chet Baker Sings, and Chet Baker Quintet at the Forum -- which is also available under the title Young Chet -- as well as Chet Baker & Crew. The crew on these sides includes Phil Urso (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass), Peter Littman (drums), and of course Baker (trumpet/vocals). Joining the combo on both the original as well as the alternate take of To Mickey's Memory and Pawnee Junction is Bill Loughbrough (chromatic tympani). His unmistakable percussive accents and tuned drum solos give these West Coast bop tracks uniquely Polynesian intonations. The band members take full advantage of their individual roles and abilities as soloists to really stretch out on Slightly Above Moderate and the Urso-credited composition Halema -- named after Baker's wife. The chemistry of cool that flows between Urso and Baker is perhaps at its finest during the seamless exchange heard on Worryin' the Life Out of Me.     Recorded in Rome, Italy at RCA's studios, Chet Is back! is the 1962 studio album by the undisputed master of the trumpet, Chet Baker. Backed by a group of up-and-coming European jazz musicians, which included Belgian saxophonist Bobby Jaspar, Belgian guitarist Rene Thomas, Italian pianist Amedeo Tommasi, French bassist Benoit Quersin, and Swiss drummer Daniel Humair, according to critics Chet Baker may have never sounded better.


    The album features compositions by other jazz musicians like Thelonious Monk's Well, You Needn't, Charlie Parker's Barbados and Sonny Rollins' Pent Up House.     Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker: Carnegie Hall Concert (Speakers Corner)

    The third encounter of the cool, swinging art of Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker took place in New York's Carnegie Hall on a cold November day in 1974. So-called Cool Jazz had long since arrived and become popular on the East Coast with the result that the concert hall must have been filled to the last seat. The two hadn't performed together on stage for ten years, rivalry and who knows what else had put an end to the highly successful pianoless quartet.



    In spite of the enormously high expectations - the Carnegie Hall fills all musicians with awe due to the echoes of concerts given by such classical and jazz great as Artur Rubinstein, George Gershwin and their successors over many generations - every melody is wonderfully relaxed from the very first note on. This is surely due to the excellent rhythm group (with piano!). This is made up of musicians from the 'new generation' - musicians who were sucking on dummies in their prams when the two veterans came together for the first time in 1952.
    Oldies such as Bernie's Tune, My Funny Valentine and Line For Lyons, and new compositions like Song For Strayhorn and Song For An Unfinished Woman constitute a successful blend both for the two performers on stage and the audience alike. And there is no experimenting - no one wants to play or hear that - however the high level of communication is tangible everywhere.



    It makes sense to release the two individual LPs as a double album. What's more: the cover photo is exactly the same for both releases and you get almost 80 minutes of West Coast cool-hot jazz at its very best!

Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    This was the third session together of the dynamic duo of Chet Baker and Art Pepper the previous two having been unequivocal successes. Baker and Pepper have an instinctual rapport that yields outstanding interplay.

    This was a record not so much of rhythm as of tonal coloring, pitch and reverberation. This was also an avant-garde Chet Baker, without gimmicks, just meeting an interest to expand and further develop: to invent, expand, create. This was also very beautiful creativity; art for art's sake. Wolfgang Lackerschmid played vibes in a manner owing itself more to Red Norvo and Gary Burton than Milt Jackson, and proved himself to be a creator and artist in his ebb and flow with the trumpeter. Bravos for both artists.

    Calendar Girl

    Jazz critic Will Friedwald has stated that Julie London's records were so popular in the 1950s mainly because she looked so drop-dead gorgeous on the album covers. The marketing hook behind Calendar Girl may just be the main example for those critical of London's musical career, since its sleeve has made it a prized collector's item. The famous wraparound cover depicts cheesecake shots of London posed for every month of the year, while original issues of the album included a more-than-suggestive insert photo of the singer stretched out in bed. While Friedwald's correct about London's physical beauty, he's wrong in suggesting that the vocalist didn't have the talent to go along with her looks. Like Chet Baker, Julie London had an extremely limited vocal range but she did the most with what she had, possessing a special knack for torch songs that cast her in the role of a woman constantly being destroyed by love in general and by men in particular. The cover concept of Calendar Girl is carried over from the concept album, which features a narrative of romance lost and found for each month of the year before ending with one final tune called The Thirteenth Month (which is illustrated by that insert picture of London in bed). Since there aren't quality standards for every month of the year, one of Calendar Girl's pleasures can be found in the numbers written especially for the album, particularly those penned by Bobby Troup, London's husband. The jazz-oriented Troup hit pay dirt with such fine compositions as Route 66, Daddy, and The Meaning of the Blues, but too few of his smart, witty songs have been widely recorded. Calendar Girl is a fun, if often bittersweet, ride and a must-have for fans of classic vocal pop and lounge music.
