    Wildwood

On Wildwood, the North Carolina acoustic band's fifth studio release and the first they've self-produced, Chatham County Line is putting themselves out there like never before. Following the creative and critical catharsis of their fourth album IV and now fully comfortable in their musical skin, CCL's classically American songwriting shines like never before. Songs like the instant classic sing-a-long Crop Comes In, title-track Wildwood and ballad Alone in New York are some of the best songs in the band's estimable canon.

    IV

New traditionalists Chatham County Line are back with their most ambitious album to date. The North Carolina quartet's fourth album IV, is a boozy blend of Americana and loose acoustic rockers that exhibits the band's ever-evolving style. CCL continues their dedication to traditional instruments by using their love for bluegrass as a base on which to layer an eclectic blend of roots music.

Bluegrass workouts like The Carolinian stand beside pop geared numbers such as Chip of a Star and the hard soul of Birmingham Jail. The progression seen on IV is helped along by indie pop musician and producer Chris Stamey (Yo La Tengo, Alex Chilton, Alejandro Escovedo), making for a starkly heartfelt testament to making the past new again. This is a limited-edition pressing of IV on 180g vinyl.

    Sight And Sound

    Includes DVD

On a recent summer evening in downtown Raleigh, NC, Chatham County Line set up shop at a stately theater filled with hundreds of their most devoted fans and captured for the ages what they do best: gathering around a single microphone to play and sing their own songs.

The result, the two LP audio and video collection Sight & Sound, is an essential document of one of the finest acoustic ensembles North Carolina has ever produced. In a state rich with bluegrass, folk and country legends, this quartet stands out for its left-of-center approach, bringing a rock 'n' roll sensibility to roots forms in a manner that appeals to traditional and contemporary camps alike.

Sight & Sound includes 20 tracks drawing from all five albums of the band's decade-long career. Nine songs appear on both the LP and the DVD; four are exclusive to the DVD, while the LP expands the collection with seven more tracks (including two taken from a Christmas-tour show in Atlanta).

    Interference

Forming out of the musical insurgence that was the NoiseFest at White Columns Gallery in 1981; Interference coalesced around three key figures of New York's downtown scene: Anne DeMaranis, David Linton and Michael Brown. DeMaranis had just parted ways with an early incarnation of Sonic Youth and co-curated the NoiseFest with Thurston Moore. Linton had headed to NYC a few years earlier with then school/band mate Lee Renaldo, eventually hooking up with Rhys Chatham for a three year stretch.

Archive From 1959: The Billy Childish Story

Billy Childish has been releasing records, painting, writing poetry and generally doing his own thing for the past 32 years. He first took to the stage back in October of 1977 with the seminal punk garage band The Pop Rivets. They split after two years and from there he joined The Milkshakes along with fellow Pop Riveter Bruce Brand and local lads Micky Hampshire and Russ Wilkins. After that came Thee Mighty Caesars, Thee Headcoats, The Buff Medways and right up to date with his two current ensembles The Musicians Of The British Empire and The Chatham Singers.

The 51 track compilation Archive From 1959: The Billy Childish Story takes a look back at the more rock 'n' roll aspects of Billy's musical career which is why there's no spoken word or poetry and many of its tracks have been unavailable for ages. In amongst these more well known bands are tracks he recorded solo and with other artists like The Delmonas, Thee Headcoatees, Singing Loins and Kyra Rubella.

Over the years Billy has been championed by lots of great bands and musicians including Beck, Mudhoney and Kurt Cobain and more recently by Eddie Vedder and The White Stripes. Even with that praise Billy has been largely ignored by the music press in this country which is really surprising as he has now released over 120 albums.

[Kid Millions] plays with a momentum and velocity that few can match and...a huge amount of soul. - The Quietus

"Through a mix of consummate skill and quirky charm, [So Percussion] has helped to ignite an explosive new enthusiasm for percussion music old and new." - The New York Times

Man Forever is an exploratory percussion project helmed by John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions), one of New York's most versitile and critically lauded collaborators and a founding member of Oneida. Since its inception in 2010, Man Forever has hosted an impressive list of guest performers, but few have been as specially qualified to perform Colpitts' technically challenging meditative workouts as So Percussion, the United States' premiere contemporary percussion ensemble. So Percussion has commissioned and premiered new compositions by Steve Reich and their interpretations of John Cage have revolutionized the legendary composer's cannon. Following a collaborative performance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in June of 2013, So and Colpitts entered the studio together to record Ryonen, two pieces that combine the former's precision and ingenuity with the latter's restless punk spirit. While previous Man Forever records were inspired by blissful, overwhelming confusion, Ryonen derives its power from its clarity and immediacy.

The two pieces on Ryonen are rhythmically seductive and instantly exciting while retaining the experimental legacy that Man Forever has cultivated over several albums and relentless touring. "The Clear Realization" is an exploration in polyrhythm performed on two drums sets, two sets of bongos (an instrument Colpitts rediscovered while performing with Yo La Tengo on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon), a concert bass drum, snares, crash cymbals, and vocals. Each instrument is performing in a different time signature at the same tempo, creating a beat that is both propulsive and nonpredictive. "Ryonen" is more chaotic on the surface, but repetitions and rhythms hidden beneath the surface emerge with close listening. The drums are tuned to resonate with each other, creating a series of overtones that hover over the music and provide a baseline drone for the ensemble to harmonize with during the piece's dramatic climax.

Colpitts continues to be one of the most in-demand drummers in New York. Throughout 2013 he toured as a member of Spiritualized, performed in duos with Greg Fox and Jim Sauter, recorded a record with Akron/Family, released an album with People of the North on Thrill Jockey, and performed with Rhys Chatham as a member of Oneida. So far in 2014 he has recorded an album with Rick Moody and is performing with William Basinski at the Ecstatic Music Festival in March. Man Forever will tour the US and Europe performing Ryonen.

    Spiritual Emergency

Guardian Alien, led by the unparalleled drumming of Greg Fox, is an integral part of a new wave of New York avant-garde musicians. Taking inspiration from those that came before, such as Milford Graves (with whom Fox has studied), and the great minimalist composer Rhys Chatham, Guardian Alien rejects previously established forms while selectively contorting elements of many into a wholly unique and personal new order. Striking a unique balance between sounds produced acoustically and electronically, its latest work, Spiritual Emergency, shows the group harnessing instability and cosmic fluctuations, pushing its sound in multiple directions simultaneously to create a pivotal moment in the postmodern New York underground.

Remastered Double LP With 12-Page Booklet

Includes Liner Notes By Tim Lawrence, Ernie Brooks And Arthur Russell

All Material Previously Released On The Audika CD Compilation First Thought Best Thought

Before Disco, and before the transcendent echoes, Arthur wanted to be a composer.

His journey began in 1972, leaving home in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Heading west to Northern California, Arthur studied Indian classical composition at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music followed by western orchestral music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, before ending two years later in New York at the Manhattan School of Music.

Traversing the popular and the serious, Arthur composed "Instrumentals" in 1974, inspired by the photography of his Buddhist teacher, Yuko Nonomura, as Arthur described, "I was awakened, or re-awakened to the bright-sound and magical qualities of the bubblegum and easy-listening currents in American popular music".

Initially intended to be performed in one 48 hour cycle, "Instrumentals" was in fact only performed in excerpts a handful of times as a work in progress.

The legendary performances captured live in New York at The Kitchen (1975 and 1978) and Franklin St. Arts Center (1977) feature the cream of that eras downtown new music scene including Ernie Brooks, Rhys Chatham, Julius Eastman, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, Garrett List, Andy Paley, Bill Ruyle, Dave Van Tieghem, and Peter Zummo.

Pitchfork lauded "Instrumentals" Vol. 1 as a masterpiece and one of Arthur's "greatest achievements". Americana touching on Copeland, Ives, and maybe even Brian Wilson. "Instrumentals" Vol. 2 is a moving, deeply pastoral work performed by the CETA Orchestra and conducted by Julius Eastman.

Also included are two of Arthur's most elusive compositions, Reach One, and Sketch For "Face Of Helen". Recorded live in 1975 at Phill Niblock's Experimental Intermedia Foundation, Reach One is a minimal, hypnotic ambient soundscape written and performed for two Fender Rhodes pianos. Sketch For "Face Of Helen" was inspired by Arthur's work with friend and composer Arnold Dreyblatt, recorded with an electronic tone generator, keyboard and ambient recordings of a rumbling tugboat from the Hudson River.

For this remastered vinyl edition, a key part of Arthur's musical life has been restored. The sparkling, multidimensional results take the listener closer to Arthur's coast-to-coast journey: his iconoclastic determination to combine pop and art music; and his desire to make music that would resonate in the present and, ultimately, across time.
