Cate Le Bon'
ADAD-CON-2821xCate Le Bon
CyrkA new force in song craft, Cate Le Bon resides in Cardiffm Wales's French quarter and befitting a songwriter who only writes in the dark, her music is a heady and personal Gallic stew of equal parts Nico, Malkmus and the chronicler's own observations on the impossibility of existence. Drawing on her experiences of the last year, Cate created collection of pop nuggets imbued with the playfulness of Faust and Syd Barrett and the tropical melodies of Os Mutantes. Existential word play and fuzz fused guitar lines tear through like an angry bee in a CAN on 'CYRK'. Currently on tour w/ St. Vincent.1. Falcon Eyed

Mug MuseumCate Le Bon recently re-located from her native Wales to the emerging Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park. Her third album, Mug Museum, is a record made with the type of clarity that a change in perspective only allows. In The Pink Of ConditionRecorded at Seahorse Sound Studios in LA and produced by long-time cohort, fellow Welsh ÉmigrÉ and musical maven Cate le Bon, In the Pink Of Condition is his 3rd album, following 2010's A Cup Of Salt and 2011's The Strange Uses Of Ox Gall.
An album of "strange pop" (words borrowed from Huw) it's a controlled explosion of lazer-guided guitar melody - think a careering Television show or Pavement outside the original site of Spillers - and whip smart bi-lingual wordplay.
Although reluctant to cite a shopping list's worth of influences, Huw nods to two permanent inspirations - the maverick U.S. author Richard Brautigan (the Hawkline name appropriated from Brautigan's 1974 'gothic western' The Hawkline Monster) and a just-turned-solo Paul McCartney (Huw namechecks Ram, an album coincidentally recorded when the once-and-future Beatle was also twenty-nine). From the former, a wistful ways with words - songs constructed as slices of life, surrealist observations on the everyday. From the latter - what else would one ask for other than a just smidgeon of MCCartney's six sense for abundant, tumbling melody?1. Sticky Slithers

EP II(+ Skisser EP)Alice Boman's voice hits with the emotional force and haunting fragility of Nina Simone. Timeless and direct, the Scandinavian singer returns with a wistful collection of songs on EP II, set to be released via The Control Group (Cate Le Bon, El Perro Del Mar), with a special bonus edition of the stunning debut EP, Skisser.
Hailing from Malmö, Sweden, the singer/songwriter first appeared when she released 2013's Skisservia Adrian Recordings in Europe. Swedish for sketches, Skisser was just that - delicate home recordings from her bedroom Boman gracefully unleashed to the world, that were never meant to fall on any other ears but her own.
Swedish label, Adrian Recordings were wrapping up after a busy summer and had no intention of doing an additional release, heard Skisser and claimed that time itself stopped, and decided to issue the EP on vinyl. The response was overwhelming, with whispers of her craft on The Line of Best Fitand The Wild Honey Pie, eventually growing so loud, that praise from the likes of Interview Magazineand The Guardian naturally followed.
Lead track and first single from the release, What, is a lo-fi fairy tale and fitting introduction to EP II.Much in the vein of Skisser, Boman's penchant for creating beauty through simplicity is carried across to EP II. My lyrics are quite simple and maybe don't give room for a lot of interpretations, so maybe there is not even any need for descriptions, she muses about the new release, which was recorded in a cabin in the Swedish woods - a fitting backdrop to the ethereal EP. And anyway, I like it when you let the music and the lyrics speak for themselves.

I'm Not Your ManIt's amazing how the floodgates open when you shut out all the internal and external noise, stop pandering to stereotype, cease listening to your anxieties, and disregard the compartment society has built for you. I'm Not Your Man, the Charlie Andrew(Alt-J, Rae Morris)-produced second album from Marika Hackman, begins with an impromptu hearty laugh. It's not the sound of silliness; it's the sound of liberation, spontaneity, and joy. 24-year-old Hackman is feeling more herself than ever. Life isn't necessarily funnier or happier, but when there's cause for a joke or a big ballsy statement, she's not holding back anymore.
The album took almost 18 months to complete, during which time Hackman switched to a new manager and a new label, transitions that yielded new avenues for exploration, a lot of time, and a lot of distance - mainly, she insists, from self-imposed boundaries. "I used to be very self-conscious," explains Hackman. "If something sounded a bit too pop or like I'd heard it before I'd mold it into something different. This time around I thought, 'fuck it, I'll just let it flow.'"
The results of this semi-anarchic approach are evident in the grungier, catchier sonics of I'm Not Your Man, and the lyrics, which reveal an unhinged and shamelessly free Hackman. There's an open-ended nature to the lyrics, which delve into femininity, sex and sexual identity, millennial ennui, the pressures of living in a social media bubble, and the perils of being young in a fast-paced industry. "The record's all about female relationships, romance, and breakdowns, but there's also a dim worldview going on. 'I'm Not Your Man' can either mean 'I'm not your man, I'm your woman,' or it can mean 'I'm not a part of this.'"
Hackman cranked up the knobs in the studio, turning away from the quieter sounds of her past to realize her teenage fantasy of fronting a raucous band. "I wanted to let rip and lose control. When I was younger I wasn't looking at Joni Mitchell. I was looking at Nirvana thinking, 'I wanna be like that!'" To channel this feral female energy, Hackman recruited London quartet The Big Moon as her backing band. The results are a dynamic, multi-genre album tied together by razor-sharp wit. The sounds span from Cate Le Bon weirdness to Warpaint dirge jams to straight-up Britpop choruses. "People were saying it was a mash-up between Radiohead, Blondie, and The Cure," laughs Hackman, self-mockingly. "I can't wait to see the reaction," she says. "That's the thrill of reinventing yourself. I might piss off a lot of die-hard folky fans but this is still my brain, it's still my world, and I'm gonna create it how I want."1. Boyfriend
