Crystal Castles are Back, and It's Beautifully Terrifying. -SPIN Magazine

(III) is The First of Their Full-Lengths to be Produced Entirely by Ethan Kath.

By ditching their old synthesizers and keyboards used on I and II, Ethan enforced a strictly no computers rule in the studio and began recording everything directly to tape. Together the Canadian duo has conjured up a collection of songs that are as raw as they are well rounded. As (III) unfolds, each track will take you to greater heights and equal lows, as you enter the sometimes plagued and often polarized world that is Crystal Castles.

We wanted the new album to sound like a completely different and new experience, says Ethan in an official statement. We'd limit ourselves to one take on each song because we believe the first take is the rawest expression of an idea.

Recorded mostly in Warsaw and Berlin, the highly anticipated album also boasts the haunting and euphoric 5-minute mind-bender Plague that quickly caused a cyber-storm amongst fans and media when the band unveiled it via their soundcloud page this summer.

AmpsandSound Products Are Handmade In Small Batches and Go Through Extensive Quality Control

The Casablanca's are aptly named for their classic good looks and commanding performance. They came about in response to repeated requests for a single-ended amp with the power to drive non-compliant or inefficient speakers. Given that large power SE amps are either run in pentode or using exotic power tubes, Ampsandsound opted for a push-pull based amp; a larger version of the Stereo 15.

The Casablanca's provide 60 watts with KT88/6550 power tubes, and 45 watts with EL-34s. Based on the Eico circuit and using a 12AX7/6SN7 front end allows access to a vast array of NOS/NIB tubes. The Casablanca's come with 8ohm and 4ohm taps and can be ordered with 16ohm taps if desired. To provide reliable power and a sweet sound, they turned to their design partners and carefully evaluated 2 new takes based on similar designs; the Eico HF97 and the Dynaco MKIII. They built both and did a shootout with the reigning king of push-pull amps, the McIntosh MC275.

The results were startling. The Eico based circuit was a clear improvement over their take on the MKIII, and was on par with the MC275. The Casablanca's provided extremely articulate bass, with truly remarkable mid and high frequency extension. The bottom line - this amp provides the warmth and detail that is expected from reference level push-pull amps, and nearly limitless personalization with different tube combinations. The tubes included with purchase are new Tungsol 12AX7, Tungsol 6SN7, and Tungsol 6550s.

They were recently asked what differentiates Ampsandsound Casablancas from any of the other well-made gear in the $2000-$3000 range. The answer is that there may be few differences, but the differences that do exist are pivotal to their approach to the reproduction of music. First off, many tube amplifiers in the Casablanca's price range have lower power. Other similar-price amplifiers are stereo amps, not providing the performance and channel separation for which mono-blocks are known.

They chose the Casablanca design to allow for the largest practical power supply. Also, mono-blocks require 40% more parts, and like all Ampsandsound components, the Casablancas utilize modern materials to bring a higher level of performance. This includes using 1-2% resistors instead of the less costly and more common 10% variety, and coupling capacitors with 5% tolerance instead of 20%. Point-to-point wiring would allow for streamlined building, but their PCB's provide superior grounding and noise isolation, with the result that they have realized and improved upon the sonic characteristics of the great amplifiers of the 50's and 60's.

    Dressed To Kill

By the release of their third album, 1975's Dressed to Kill, Kiss were fast becoming America's top rock concert attraction, yet their record sales up to this point did not reflect their ticket sales. Casablanca label head Neil Bogart decided to take matters into his own hands, and produced the new record along with the band. The result is more vibrant sounding than its predecessor, 1974's sludgefest Hotter Than Hell, and the songs have more of an obvious pop edge to them. The best-known song on the album by far is the party anthem Rock and Roll All Nite, but it was the track C'Mon and Love Me that became a regional hit in the Detroit area, giving the band their first taste of radio success. Since the band was on the road for a year straight, songs such as Room Service and Ladies in Waiting dealt with life on the road (i.e., groupies), and a pair of songs were reworked from Kiss' precursor band, Wicked Lester (Love Her All I Can and She). With Dressed to Kill's Top 40 showing on the Billboard charts, the stage was now set for Kiss' big commercial breakthrough with their next release.

    Is This It

Ranked 367/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Is This It is the debut studio album by American indie rock band The Strokes, recorded at Transporterraum in New York City with producer Gordon Raphael.

For the album, The Strokes strived to capture a simple rock sound that was not significantly enhanced in the studio. Building on the work of their 2001 debut EP, The Modern Age, the band members molded compositions largely through live takes during the recording sessions, while songwriter Julian Casablancas continued to detail the lives and relationships of urban youth. Following the completion of Is This It, The Strokes embarked on a promotional world tour before its release. The album's cover photograph courted controversy for being too sexually explicit and was replaced for the U.S. market. The American track listing was also amended in light of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Promoted by the music press for a melodic pop-influenced sound, The Strokes garnered critical acclaim and commercial attention. Is This It was praised for its charisma and rhythm, which often referenced the works of 1970s garage rock bands. The record is considered crucial in the development of other alternative bands and of the post-millennial music industry. It has featured in several publications' lists of the best albums of the 2000s and of all time.

    Era Vulgaris (Awaiting Repress)

Latin for common era, Era Vulgaris holds a pair of common threads with the four Queens of the Stone Age records that preceded it. One, it crosses colossal guitar chords with the most volatile of hard rock melodies. And second, it's as LOUD as loud gets, thanks to Josh Homme, the impatient instigator behind the ever-evolving cast of personalities that make up the band. Detonation comes with track one, as the jagged riffs of Turning on the Screw lead the listener into Sick, Sick, Sick, where Julian Casablancas spews his vocals beneath a wall of multi-guitar catcalls. Although the head Stroke will likely garner the most attention, perpetual Queener Mark Lanegan's velvety pipes earmark two of Era's most booming selections: the funky Make It Wit Chu (complete with Temptations-like backing vocals) and the heart-racing three minutes of River in the Road. Add the garage rock of Homme's 3's & 7's and Suture Up Your Future, easy pickings for most likely crossover hit, and Era Vulgaris-- hypnotically and explosively common--holds its own with any in the QoTSA discography. --Scott Holter

    Dark Night Of The Soul

Dark Night Of The Soul is an album by audio auteur Danger Mouse and the already much-missed Sparklehorse. The record sees the pair joined by the following remarkable roll call of guests: The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Black Francis (The Pixies), Iggy Pop, David Lynch, James Mercer (The Shins/Broken Bells), Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Suzanne Vega and Vic Chesnutt.

Rumors of this mysterious collaborative project began to circulate in early 2009 sparking widespread anticipation and excitement. Now, following months of talks, Danger Mouse and EMI announce that Dark Night Of The Soul will be released worldwide.

While this beautiful, haunting record being made widely and legitimately available is undoubtedly a cause for celebration, the news is shadowed by sadness following the recent passing of Mark Linkous, who released and performed under the Sparklehorse pseudonym. Dark Night Of The Soul will now stand as a defacto tribute to this well-loved, stunningly talented yet often-overlooked artist.

In addition to be featured on two songs, celebrated film director David Lynch has created a series of original photographs for Dark Night Of The Soul adding a spectacular visual dimension that will be incorporated in to the artwork for this already unparalleled project.

    Days Are Gone

Days Are Gone is the debut album from indie-rock outfit/sisters Haim.

Produced by Ariel Rechtshaid (Usher, Vampire Weekend) and James Ford (Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys), Days Are Gone is an album years in the making. Since their first show as a group, which took place on July 7th, 2007, Haim have been gigging extensively. The first five years we just played every show we could play in L.A., Alana recalls. All we wanted to do was play. Then finally we realized we were playing too much. The sisters credit Casablancas specifcially for advising them that playing too many live shows is not the answer. To that end, the girls have now been more selective when lining up future tours. Still, as Alana explains, it was hard to turn down opening-slot offers from groups they love, specifically Florence and the Machine and Mumford & Sons. They take care of me like I'm their little sister, Alana says of the Mumfords, with whom Haim again will be playing support for later this year.

Ask the girls to describe specific tracks on Days Are Gone and they quickly fire back: If I told you I'd have to kill you, Este deadpans. Wait, really? No clues at all? The thing is, she explains, you can ask me anything about anything and I'll tell you except for our music. The record is something we're tight-lipped about. Haim do reveal that the album contains a healthy dose of the songs they've been playing in their live sets - "Falling," "Forever," "Don't Save Me" - in addition to, as Alana says, a lot of new jams. What little they'll reveal about the new material is that the album's title track was co-written with Jessie Ware and Kid Harpoon.

Rolling Stone had a chance to take the new album for a spin, however. And it's every bit worth the wait. There's palpable maturity in the lyrics: On If I Could Change Your Mind, Danielle is a self-admitted newbie at the whole love thing (I've never done this before/drove a million miles/back when you were mine/I was too young to know you were the one to find); later she's brushing off a former lover on Honey & I, then flat-out giving dude the cold shoulder (Honey, I'm not your honey-pie,) over a ripping electric guitar lick and a bass wobble generally reserved for sweaty dance clubs on the pop-friendly My Song 5. Sonically, the LP is a highly textural affair, from the 8-bit keyboard clatter on the title track to the lush, Eighties-style synths that sizzle throughout Running If You Call My Name.

"A clever mix of electronically influenced genres that's as current as it is addictive." - Interview

Electronic pop trio Icky Blossoms release their second album, Mask. Three years on from their Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio) produced debut, their singular brand of
mesmerizingly contradictory dance music has evolved. Blending avant-garde elements with catchy and danceable
pop, threaded within dark, bass-heavy atmospheres, their songs nod to great music of the past, whilst rmly
    propelling them into the future.

Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, the three members of Icky Blossoms-Sarah Bohling (vocals/synth), Nik Fackler (lead
guitar/vocals) and Derek Pressnall (guitar/vocals-also of Tilly and the Wall)-wrote independently and then ltered
songs back and forth through each other, creating a collage of tastes, genres and energies within each track. The
band experimented with making electronics sound organic and organic instruments feel electronic. Song skeletons
were embellished with tuned 808s, hyper-e ected mouth noises, screams as instruments, and guitars run through
    synthesizers.

With the talent of longtime friend and collaborator Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Julian Casablancas, Man Man,
First Aid Kit) at ARC Studios in Omaha, Nebraska, these songs became fully realized. Along with Mogis, the
contributions of assistant engineer Ben Brodin (Conor Oberst band), bassist Graham Ulicny (Reptar), drummer Daniel
Ocanto (Big Harp) and Todd Fink (The Faint) helped the vision come into focus.

Mask  nds the band capitalizing on the spontaneity of their live experience and the ambitions of their writing and
recording process, while not losing their sense of self. Their in uences range from Fad Gadget to Beyonce and the
subject matter varies from wrestling with the isolation of existence to the emotional spectrum of love. The album
pulses with a vibrant sound that's electric, con dent, and new.

Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star

speaking of air and darkness, Born on a Gangster Star cameinto the world in a big damn hurry, like nightfall on an island. You can see it happening, but then again it's so gradual that thenext thing you know-it's dark.

Imbued with the energy and ideas from all the creative embersfloating in the atmosphere like fireflies, Shabazz Palacesrecorded this entire album over the course of two weeks withBlood in Seattle. New gear and new equipment disintegratedcomfort zones into dust and a new path appeared in the rubble.

Herein the Palaceer continues the tale of Quazar, a sentientbeing from somewhere else, an observer sent here to Amurdercato chronicle and explore as a musical emissary. What he finds inour world is a cutthroat place, a landscape where someone likehim could never quite feel comfortable amidst all the brutalityand alternative facts and death masquerading as connectivity.

Inspired by days on end spent in the waves-water and light,both-of Southern California, the work came to the Palaceer in aflash, like being picked up by something and carried. Alwaysdribbling with his head up, he can see what's going on aroundhim and react to it, rather than starting in a certain direction andhoping to achieve something upon arrival.

What's good?-the kids ask. What does it even mean, and whatdoes it even matter? Who is behind these choices? We are all ofus sitting under a waterfall of all. this. shit. But it's the excessthat is casting us into ruts.

The Palaceer stays away from the fleeting and the superficialnonessential. Stay away from your device-your phantomlimb-and stay away from your image-your phantom self; thatis his decree. Considering the motions behind the things you liketo consume artistically, rather than just the way something looksor sounds, and thinking in layers, and trying to be more considerateand not so self-oriented-this is his medicine for combat.

Born on a Gangster Star flirts with a pop sensibility, but throughthe prism of Shabazz Palaces's fire and fury. For the Palaceer, that sense is all about how the groove is moving, and thesupernatural telepathy that occurs amongst his cohort. Appearinghere, in body or in spirit, are Julian Casablancas, Thundercat,Darrius Willrich, Gamble and Huff, Loud Eyes Lou, Thaddillac,Ahmir, Jon Kirby, Sunny Levine, and Blood. The storybelongs to Quazarz, but the air and darkness belong to us.

And so we shine a light on the fake.
