    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

One of the best known record dates in the history of modern jazz, the chemistry among Adderley, Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey is amazing. Their reworkings of Autumn Leaves and Love For Sale are masterpieces. Miles' title tune and Nat Adderley's One For Daddy-O are classics.

Remastered And Reissued As Part Of The Blue Note 75th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Campaign

Recorded in March of 1958, Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else was recording during the era when Adderley was part of the Miles Davis Sextet.
Featured on the album are Adderley on alto sax along with Miles Davis on trumpet, Hank Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Art Blakey on drums.
Of note, this is one of the few post-1955 appearances of Miles Davis as a sideman. Somethin' Else will be reissued on vinyl as part of an overall Blue

    In New York

An exceedingly excellent live date from the legendary Village Vanguard, In New York captures the recording debut of the Adderley Sextet and finds
Cannonball gliding through seven tunes with swinging ease on alto saxophone. Joined by brother Nat on cornet, and the versatile Yusef Lateef on tenor,
flute, and oboe, Cannonball and his crew turn in what All About Jazz calls perhaps the single most indispensable recording by the Adderley Brothers. In
New York is also the first recorded appearance of pianist Joe Zawinul who would go on to jazz prominence as a pioneer of the jazz-fusion genre and a
founding member of the seminal group Weather Report. This special vinyl reissue is a must-have for fans of straight-ahead, classic jazz with an
    adventurous twist.

Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley (September 15, 1928 - August 8, 1975) was a jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. Adderley is remembered for his work with trumpeter Miles Davis, including the album "Somethin' Else" (1958). This was recorded during Adderley's membership in the Miles Davis Sextet and is one of the few post1955 appearances of Miles Davis as a sideman. Indeed, Davis plays several of the first solos, composed the bluesy title track and, according to the liner notes, chose most of the material. "Autumn Leaves" would remain in the Davis book, and "Love for Sale" would be recorded by the Davis Sextet a little over two months later.

    That's My Story

This rare 1960 Riverside blues date finds John Lee Hooker both in a trio setting with jazz musicians Sam Jones (bass) and Louis Hayes (drums) who were Cannonball Adderley's rhythm section at the time and unaccompanied on a few numbers as well. A departure from his R&B Vee-Jay output, That's My Story features more of a stripped down, acoustic country-blues sound courtesy of producer Orrin Keepnews. The compelling 12-song set boasts all Hooker originals and is highlighted by the warning shot of Gonna Use My Rod, the gospel-tinged One of These Days and the stirring solo cuts That's My Story and Democrat Man.

    Things Are Getting Better

This title provides ample evidence why Cannonball Adderley (alto sax) is considered one of the masters of his craft. Here he joins forces with Modern Jazz Quartet co-founder Milt Jackson (vibes) to create a variety of sonic atmospheres. They are backed by the all-star ensemble of Wynton Kelly (piano), Percy Heath (bass), and the one and only Art Blakey (drums).

The moody Blues Oriental opens the set with Jackson immediately diving in with his trademark fluid runs and shimmering intonation. Adderley counters with a light and lively line that weaves between the rhythm section. The optimistic Things Are Getting Better is a good-natured romp as the co-leads trade and cajole each other into some downright rollicking exchanges. This directly contrasts with the sultry Serves Me Right, which allows the combo members to demonstrate their collective musical malleability. The interaction between Adderley and Jackson sparkles as they entwine their respective playing with an uncanny singularity of spirit. The cover of Dizzy Gillespie's Groovin' High contains another spirited performance with some thoroughly engaging improvisation, especially during Adderley's voracious solos. Sidewalks of New York bops freely as Jackson unleashes some sublime licks against a hearty and equally boisterous sax. Adderley's Sounds for Sid demonstrates his uncanny ability to swing with a strong R&B vibe. With drop-dead timing and profound instrumental chops, this cut is undoubtedly one of the best from Adderley's earliest canon. The album concludes with a jumping reading of Cole Porter's Just One of Those Things.

Only Record to Feature Davis Original Sextet, Including Rhythm Section of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones

Title Track Stands as First-Ever Modal Composition Even as Blues and Hard-Bop Flavors Make LP One of Davis Most Explosive Affairs

Miles Davis created just one studio album with his original sextet. He made every moment count. Pairing with Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, the trumpeter not only laid the groundwork for the modalism that immediately followed but tailored a genuine modern-jazz masterwork laden with performances among the most explosive of his distinguished career. Due to its sandwiched position between the more famous Round About Midnight and epochal Kind of Blue, Milestones remains, for too many music lovers, an overlooked classic.

Originally released in 1958, Jazz Track is comprised of two distinct sessions (one on each side). Side 1 features Miles' brilliantly improvised soundtrack to the Louis Malle noir classic Ascenseur pour l'Échafaud while side 2 is a 1958 NYC session featuring that includes the unreal band of John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb - the very first recordings from the band that would go on to make Kind Of Blue the following year. In 1958, after a string of critically acclaimed and successful albums, Miles Davis was searching for a new direction to take the music, and signs were pointing him off the chordal highway into a new jazz style: modal. His innovations would open up the world for improvisers. He recruited key players with the potential to solidify his new approach, forming his famed sextet with rising jazz giants John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans & Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. Miles hired the little-known Evans because he needed a pianist who was into the modal thing. Davis and Evans both had developed personal voices characterized by a melodic flow that suggested, rather than defined, musical structure. It was his relationship with Evans that created the spark that resulted in the album Kind of Blue.

In only two impromptu sessions in March and April of 1959, Miles Daviss sextet created a tour de force 5 original tunes built on simple scales. Davis is committed to getting something spontaneous out of his musicians. The entire album was composed as a series of modal sketches and was conceived only hours before the recording dates. The outcome? Pure inspiration, and the stuff of legend an album made up of the first full take of each tune, captured at the historic Columbia 30th Street Studio. The album was originally released on Columbia Records in 1959, stunning the jazz world by practically creating a new language of music. Its influence goes far beyond jazz. Kind of Blue is universally considered to be one of the best albums of all time, of any genre. Fifty years later, Kind of Blue the epitome of spontaneous inventionis still the best selling jazz album ever.

This Collectors Edition marks the 50th Anniversary with an unprecedented presentation of music, images, insight and history to celebrate the album that is essential to any music collection, the ideal gift item for any jazz lover, especially fans of Miles Davis a true collectors set.

    But Beautiful (Pure Pleasure)

A highly successful and respected jazz and soul singer, Nancy Wilson bridges the gap between the classic pop vocal era of Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald and the belting R&B divas of today. Though Nancy Wilson has always cited the emotionally naked, androgynous vocal style of Jimmy Scott as her primary influence, her voice carries definite echoes of Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan. Yet Wilson also has always had a strong feeling for post-Sam Cooke soul and the tartness of her delivery carries more than an echo of the sometimes-icy Lena Horne. Young and heart-stoppingly beautiful, Wilson was discovered singing in a N.Y.C. jazz club in the late 1950s by Cannonball Adderley, who told his management at Capitol Records that they needed to scoop her up before another label did. Wilson was immediately signed and started recording for Capitol, the premier vocal label of the 1950s and '60s.

    Musicians:

    • Nancy Wilson (vocal)

    • Hank Jones (piano)

    • Gino Bertachini (guitar)

    • Ron Carter (bass)

    • Grady Tate (drums)

Recording: November 1969 in New York City

    Production: David Cavanaughdeutsch

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

New Bottle Old Wine (Pure Pleasure)

If you have admired Gil Evans' arrangements on the Miles Davis recordings, you owe it to yourself to check this out. These recordings help make the case that Gil Evans was one of the great jazz arrangers of all time. Gil Evans always manages to communicate with sophistication and nuance, and on these sessions he manages to have fun as well.

This is a LP of Gil Evans re-arranging classic jazz standards like St. Louis Blues, King Porter Stomp, and Lester Leaps. It's so interesting to be listening to these records nearly 50 years after they were made. This was a 'modern' take on jazz tunes that even then were considered classics. Hearing them now, it's like listening to one set of Old Masters interpreting an even more distant set of Old Old Masters. It's a LP that you can enjoy as a peek into modern jazz of the late 50's, or as a set of very interesting big band orchestrations. An absolute jazz classic.

    Kenya (Pure Pleasure)

This outstanding album, recorded in 1957, in honor of the then recently formed republic of Kenya, highlights the wonderful Afro-American and Afro-Cuban musical language Machito spoke so well.

In this album, Machito has combined all the elements needed in bringing the true meaning of Afro-Cuban jazz music to the listener. Machito, his musical director Mario Bauza, Rene Hernandez and A. K. Salim who along with Mr Bauza composed and arranged this music, define it this way: Afro-Cuban rhythm differs from other rhythms in that instead of the usual drums carrying the rhythmic beat, it is carried by Cuban percussion instruments such as the bongos, congas, timbales, guiros and maracas. Also, and even more elemental, is that although there are four beats to the bar as in all jazz, in Afro-Cuban jazz the beat is not played by any instrunments as such. It is felt, rather than actually heard. Afro-Cuban jazz is, in it's performance, the marriage of Afro-Cuban rhythm and soloists.

    Musicians:

    • Machito (vocal, conductor)

    • Mario Bauza, Doc Cheatham, Joe Newman (trumpet)

    Plenty, Plenty Soul

his superior reissue combines together two sessions led by vibraphonist Milt Jackson. The first side of Plenty, Plenty Soul, which features a nine-piece group, is highlighted by the contributions of the exuberant altoist Cannonball Adderley, while the flip side has a sextet that is not hurt by the solos of tenor-saxophonist Lucky Thompson. With pianist Horace Silver helping out on both sessions, these all-star dates still sound fresh and enthusiastic decades later.Mastered from original analog tapes and pressed on 180 gram vinyl, this is THE essential pressing of this classic LP.

Bursting Out with the All Star Big Band!

Pianist Oscar Peterson has a rare outing with a big band on this excellent reissue. In addition to his usual bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen , Peterson is joined by a particularly strong big band arranged by Ernie Wilkins ; there are short solos for several of the sidemen including altoist Norris Turney , James Moody on tenor and altoist Cannonball Adderley . However the main focus is on Peterson and he is in excellent form on such songs as West Coast Blues, Here's That Rainy Day, Tricotism and Manteca, blending in very well with the orchestra.
