    Unchained Spirit

Personnel includes: Buju Banton, Gramps, LMS, Beres Hammond, Luciano, Stephen Marley, Rancid, Wayne Wonder. Producers include: Donovan Germain, Mark Myrie, Tyrone Downie, Stephen Marsden, Tony Kelly. The once controversial Buju Banton, vilified for his anti-homosexual sentiments on his early single Boom Bye Bye and for his typically violent and slack dancehall, artistically turned the corner in 1995 with the release of the conscious and wistful Til Shiloh. The follow-up in 1998, Inna Heights, was equally spiritual and devoid of negativity. The third installment in this awakening is Unchained Spirit, released in September of 2000: a vital and rhythmic mix of homegrown Jamaican philosophy, biblical harmonizing, and just plain eerie dancehall. Banton sets the album off with a slow chant of Psalm 23, giving the album a spiritual center with which the rest radiates.

    Rasta Got Soul (Awaiting Repress)

Since the early 1990s, the uncompromising lyrical insights, razor sharp rhyming skills and gritty yet beguilingly melodic deejay delivery of Buju Banton has dominated Jamaican music, transcending dancehall parameters to become a universally embraced prototype for the 21st century roots reggae movement. Fourteen years after 1995Æs exalted æTil Shiloh, Buju Banton delivers the long-awaited opus Rasta Got Soul, his most musically audacious work to date. The album unites his characteristic vocals and consistently
positive messages, grounded in the tenets of Rastafari, with organic roots reggae rhythms carefully crafted by a select aggregation of Kingston, JamaicaÆs finest musicians.

ôRoots music is reggaeÆs foundation,ö explains Buju, who became a dancehall superstar by riding the latest synthesized beats with an imposing ferocity that earned him legions of loyal fans and a peerless designation as the ævoice of Jamaica.Æ ôTo me the computer stuff gets monotonous; every third production you listen to you can hear some similarity in terms of the instruments that they use, as opposed to when you listen to something live there is always something different to catch you. I aim to bring back reggaeÆs original sounds, original feeling and original consciousness through great poetry and pure live instrument.
