    Best Of Bread (Awaiting Repress)

Masterd by Joe Reagoso from the Original Elektra Records Tapes at Friday Music

Bread were one of the finest pop rock bands of all time. Led by the unforgettable voice and songs of guitarist/keyboardist David Gates, alongside the vocals and superlative writings of guitarist James Griffin, Bread scored several #1 and Top Five singles and albums, which made them one of the most popular groups of the '70s.

Supplemented by the super talents of Larry Knechtel, Mike Botts and Robb Royer, Bread recorded such huge smash recordings as their first #1 Make It With You, and more top charters like If, Baby Im A Want You, Diary and Everything I Own.

Aside from the melodic rock and pop balladry of Bread, the band rocked with the best of them as showcased on Mother Freedom, Truckin and the fuzz guitar driven Let Your Love Flow.

In 1973, Elektra Records honored the band with their first Greatest Hits album the multi-platinum The Best Of Bread. Now, Friday Music wants you to revisit that moment by announcing the first time ever HQ vinyl release of The Best of Bread. Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso from the original Elektra Records tapes at Friday Music Studios and Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA, this limited edition album was just waiting for the 180g Audiophile domain.

To enhance your Bread listening experience, Friday Music has also included a very nice gatefold cover, which hasnt been in circulation since its original release back in 1973.

    Import

The brainchild of classically trained musician, Vini Reilly, who took the band's name and idea of putting their first release in a sandpaper sleeve (so as to destroy all other albums on the shelf, from the avant-garde Situationist International movement, but Reilly himself, DC's only constant member, was (and is) 100% Manchester.

Releasing a steady stream of experimental albums on the legendary Factory Records (Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays, etc.) beginning in 1981. Originally released on the Factory Benelux label in 1986, Circuses and Bread was DC's fifth in a steady stream of excellent and experimental studio albums, featuring viola, trumpet and piano interspersed with Reilly's stellar guitar work.

    Goldkinder

    Picture Disc

'Goldkinder' is the self released fourth album from We Butter The Bread With Butter.

Guitarist Marcel Neumann comments, We had about 80 songs recorded during this time, but we kept throwing away recordings and starting over again until we felt we created something totally new.

Goldkinder was recorded by the band itself and mixed by Stefan Glaumann (Rammstein, Apocalyptica). Incorporating the technical harmonics of metal and the hooks of electro-pop into heavy rock, songs range from in-your-face pit-starters like "Alles Was Ich Will" to tunes with colossal melodies like "Mayday Mayday."

While Neumann admits that the band may shock some fans who loved the pure aggression of 2010's full-length, Der Tag an dem die Welt unterging, he says "We didn't want to be carbon-copy band # One Million and one with the same elements, the same sound and same structures as everyone else. It makes us sad to see every band trying to copy themselves or others."

Obviously any band naming itself something as non-threatening as We Butter The Bread With Butter expecting to gain an audience in the heavy music landscape is not afraid to take chances. Speaking on the moniker, Neumann says, "When we were forming the band, the overall metal landscape was rife with morose imagery and nihilist lyrics. While we play music influenced by metal, our personalities certainly don't echo the negative worldview that dominates the scene. Our name reflects our humor, not our musical style." Positivity is a strong force within the band with lyrics and song subjects centering on wishes, dreams and even fairy tales.

    Taste

Taste, Islands' 6th record, is a muscular, crystalline affair, with the majority of the music electronic, buoyed by drum machines, programming and arpeggiated vintage synths. The songs still flirt with Islands' bread and butter; evergreens such as ennui, remorse, and a general disenchantment with the modern world hover over the tracks, with lines like "we got so thrown, we felt lost at home" and "steal a little moment, lose it like you own it", to hammer home the point. The songs cut a wide swath, however, and also go in directions that Islands has never tackled, including police brutality and white male privilege (!).

    Aretha Live At Fillmore West

Aretha Franklin's 1971 album Live at Fillmore West was a seminal soul breakthrough. It finally cemented her status beyond soul audiences and it matched her with a phenomenal rhythm section in King Curtis and the Kingpins. Franklin adroitly mixed pop, rock, and soul material throughout the three nights, including Stephen Stills' ''Love The One You're With,'' and Bread's ''Make It With You,'' and the Beatles' ''Eleanor Rigby,'' as well as true favorites ''Respect,'' ''Don't Play That Song,'' and ''Spirit in the Dark,'' which brought Ray Charles out of the audience for a spirited duet. Deluxe gatefold sleeve featuring photos from the concert and new liner notes by Down Beat contributor Mitch Myers (including fresh interviews with original album producers Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin). Riding on the success of More Than Words, Extreme II - Pornograffitti became the breakthrough album for the Bostonian rockers Extreme.

Carried by the silky Funk Metal riffs of guitar god Nuno Bettencourt and vocal gymnastics of Gary Cherone, Extreme took the world by storm following their second album in 1990. Combining Glam with Pop, Extreme carved out a niche for themselves propelled by a lot of MTV play for More Than Words and Hole Hearted. The album tells a broader story than both hits: powerful Glam with out-of-this-world solos are the bread and butter of this album.

The immaculate production of these catchy and intricately layered songs just screams for a 180-gram vinyl treatment.

    Project 1950

Patriotism may be the last refuge of scoundrels, but nostalgia traditionally puts bread on the table for succeeding generations of rock musicians long after the hits stop coming. If 25th anniversary celebrations--the excuse for this Misfits roots covers collection--seem the very antithesis of punk, they're but another golden marketing opportunity for Jerry Only, the sole original band member still standing and arguably the Energizer Bunny of ghoul-punk. Teamed here with Marky Ramone and ex-Black Flag guitarist Dez Cadena, Only turns his band's beloved PG-13 thrash-horror shtick loose on an oddball collection of his '50s and '60s musical inspirations. And just when you thought irony was passÉ, Only croon-howls it undead with fervent renditions of This Magic Moment by Jay & the Americans, Paul Anka's frothy Diana, and Conway Twitty's Only Make Believe.

    Soma Records Story: Vol. 3 - A Man's Gotta Be A Man!

The record world was a completely different place in 1965.
Kids wanting to take home a piece of the rock 'n' roll action they frugged to at the Armory dance last weekend or a wild tune they heard the local bossjocks spin on the way home from school, inevitably had to deal with seven-inchers made by independent record labels. The single was the thing in the mid-60's, not the album. In even the hippest big city record emporiums, you could thumb through the entire recorded canon of British Invasion-influenced LPs - no more than a hundred or so - in about five minutes. But, ahhh, those singles. And nobody did them better than the shoebox companies sprouting up like bread mold all over the country, labels who could tap into the best local talent and get their show-stopping songs into the local record shops.

Just about every sector of the US had its own scene, red hot local chart entries that kids three hundred miles away were destined to never hear. And that's why the legendary indie labels - from International Artists in Houston or Autumn in San Francisco to Dunwich in Chicago or Etiquette in Tacoma - and hundreds more just as groovy, are revered today more than ever.

The Soma Record Company of Minneapolis caught the national spotlight by releasing hits from the likes of the Castaways and the Gestures. But Liar Liar and Run, Run, Run are just the tip ofthe iceberg. If you've always suspected that thousands of great singles from the '60s that you've yet to hear are lurking in the bushes, guess what? You're right. Step into the dusty Soma vaults with us - brush aside those cobwebs, if you would - point your flashlight towards the strobelight flickering at the far end of the tunnel and keep walking. When the cool Fender 'n Farfisa sounds finally grab you by the shirt collar, just keep telling yourself: This isn't a dream. It's what I was born to do.

    Diddy Wah Diddy

    Double 7 Set

In the high desert of California, they were referred to simply as "Beefheart."

Don Van Vliet acquired the habit of singing along to vintage blues records while hanging with high school chum Frank Zappa. Founder Alex Snouffer formed the Magic Band in late 1964. And, by early 1965, the powerful and charismatic local blues combo had made quite a name for itself locally as "the band" for local dances at the fairgrounds. By late '65 the inclusion of master guitarist Rich Hepner explosively changed the group's chemistry; dances morphed to concerts - with the dancers choosing to sit on the floor, captivated by this white blues band that seemed to transform Exposition Hall into a spellbinding Louisiana swamp.

In early 1966, the band signed with A&M Records. Producer David Gates (of Bread fame) was assigned production duties, and the first result - a cover of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" - stunned everyone. Famed Del Rio, Texas DJ "Wolfman Jack" introduced it by saying "OK everybody on the highway, you'd better pull over, cause here comes Captain Beefheart with 'Diddy Wah Diddy.'"

Ill-fated times intervened with the coincidental cover of "Diddy" by an East Coast group - The Remains - which was releases almost simultaneously on the Epic Records label. Confusion and chaos reigned, and the songs dropped from the charts quickly. Founder Snouffer reflected: That's a record label's, personal manager's, and band's nightmare." Undaunted, Gates penned a follow-up to "Diddy," entitled "Moonchild." The band arranged it themselves - interpreting Dave's guitar/voice demo. Gates reaction: "Boy, it wasn't supposed to happen like this!"

Van Vliet had also penned his first recorded compositions - "Who Do You Think You're Fooling" for the B-side of "Diddy" and "Frying Pan" for the B-side of "Moonchild." Van Vliet went on in later years through many incarnations of Magic Bands to create the most avante-garde rock music ever recorded, but the roots of these early pieces echo throughout all the later works.

    Good Mood Fool

In the winter Luke Temple moved into a cottage, a small one, in upstate New York. The snow fell quietly. He had frozen blueberries and bread and eggs and Coors Original. He sang and drank and played and drank and ate and shoveled snow and when the snow melted and the roads cleared he had his friends. Eliot Kirmsky (Glass Ghost) and Mike Johnson (Dirty Projectors) dug into Luke's hut and together they built a fire. Luke called it Good Mood Fool.

Originally from Cape Anne, Massachusetts, Luke moved to the North West, sleeping rough in the woods,
working in a candy store and as a janitor at a suburban mall. While in Seattle Luke met some people headed down the coast. All of his aimlessness lasted a year and half before Luke had had enough. He enrolled in school of the Museum of Fine Arts and spent five years painting portraits, after which Luke moved to New York and worked as a muralist and plasterer. As painting drifted from the foreground little songs started to emerge. He tried them out at the famous Sidewalk CafÉ Monday open mic and the people there liked it.

After recording two critically acclaimed albums for Mill Pond, to little commercial reception, Luke was at the point of quitting a career in music. In 2008, feeling free in his new state, he made what would become the first Here We Go Magic album, forming the band and releasing the self-titled debut in 2009. Positive critical and commercial response to the record kept Luke busy with Here We Go Magic through touring and recording two more full lengths and an EP. Since Here We Go Magic's 2012 release, A Different Ship, Luke has returned to his original solo ideas.

In a sense Good Mood Fool is an extension of the first self-titled Here We Go Magic record. It was recorded with the same sense of freedom and joy. The meat of the record finds Luke taking a sharp turn in order to keep himself interested. First single Katie is a prime slice of mid-80s intelligent pop, almost So-era Peter Gabriel in its rhythms and sound. Meanwhile, Florida is a blue-eyed soul hit, a lazy sunny evening of summer beauty. Good Mood Fool draws from myriad influences, from the hushed soulful wail of Curtis Mayfield to the dense
harmonies of Gill Evans and the Bulgarian Women's Choir. It is meant to be clear in production and in content, hiding nothing.

    Present Arms

Present Arms is the second album by UB40 and was released in 1981. Like their first album Signing Off, Present Arms contained many socially and politically charged lyrics, from the anti-militant title track to 'Sardonicus' which was linked to both President Ronald Regan and Risus sardonicus, an ironic smile on tetanus victims' faces, The UK top-ten hit One In Ten was an attack on Thatcherism. The album also touches on a subject very dear to UB40's heart: 'Lamb's Bread' and 'Don't Walk On The Grass' are written as part of the band's longstanding campaign for the legalization of cannabis. Musically, the album continued in the heavy, reverb-drenched, mellifluous style of the debut.

    Fresh Blood For Tired Vampyres

Eternal life can seem like an eternity. Ask any vampire. The continuous march of sun ups, sun downs, transformations of form, seductions, cape fittings & exsanguinations. Eventually it all just becomes an endless, tired routine. It all seems so exciting & so sexy to those of us who operate knowing we have limited time. But ask any vampire about the downside of eternal life, & you won't be surprised to hear tales of binge eating garlic bread just to feel the hurt, or of the occasional dangling of a wooden stake just over the center of the rib cage.

Electric Six knows all about eternal life. Electric Six has been around forever & it can never die. That's lovely, but it's also very tiring. Fresh Blood For Tired Vampyres is the new release by Electric Six on Metropolis Records. One listen & you will immediately understand that the sexiest vampires are urban vampires. Where E6 has dabbled in dance, hip-hop & R&B in the past, Fresh Blood is the whole enchilada. It's thirteen songs designed to make the listener interested in smooth & nasty fuckin', the way they do it in the city. From the Grandmaster Flash-inspired Number Of The Beast to the super smooth tour of the NYC outer boroughs Mood Is Improving, the listener finds himself immediately deposited into an urban drop zone with hustlas & dickblockas coming from behind every corner.

The radio-ready pop hits I'll Be In Touch & Dance With Dark Forces are the tracks that get the listener off the street & into the club. & it would not be an Electric Six album without an epic closer, that being the beautiful & haunting Spacewalkin', the ballad that assures the listener that the vampire has now fed & will live a thousand more years, albeit in outer space. Electric Six changes more frequently than change itself, but ultimately this just means they're never gonna put out the same album twice. Fresh Blood for Tired Vampires is poppy & smooth, nasty & raw...& oh so life affirming, especially if you are undead.

    Beyond The Bloodhounds

Adia Victoria spent the last few years writing, recording, touring and performing, while entrenched in the infamous artist R&R world - restaurants and retail work. Day jobs at a laundry list of Nashville it and not so it spots gave the musician lots of people watching time as well as the mental and emotional space to marinate in her art.

Adia blows the social hush-hush lid off the mental and emotional state of a young black woman growing up under the poverty line in the Deep South and all the implications of such. No pretense. No jive. But also, like the writing of Eudora Welty and Tennessee Williams, there is plenty of Southern Gothic styled, marrow deep joy.

In a recent feature story, Fader encouraged us to, Meet Adia Victoria, A Poet Making Country Music a Little Creepier. She is found in album cuts like Sea of Sand and Stuck in the South, revealing some of her place-based aha moments. In the latter, she notes, I don't know nothin' about Southern belles/ But I can tell you something about Southern hell. As songs like Head Rot, and first single Dead Eyes show us, Adia says, it's an album of falling in love, dealing with loss, confusion, anger, love, and loving myself.

Produced by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney) and the artist herself, recorded at Nashville, Tennessee's Haptown Studios, Beyond the Bloodhounds features the indelible lyrics, voice, and guitar solos of Adia Victoria along with a band of talented musicians including Tiffany Minton (Drums), Alex Caress (keys), Mason Hickman (guitar), and Jason Harris (bass). She recalls, the studio is a Music City treasure. It used to be a car repair shop. You walk in and there are no windows. It's dark and moody. It feels like walking into the mind.

The result of a lifetime of introspection and a younger self marked by silent observation, Adia Victoria's Beyond the Bloodhounds was three active, recording years in the making. The title pays homage to a line in Harriet Jacobs' Narrative in the Life of a Slave Girl.

Ultimately, Victoria's debut album is more both/and, than either/or. The complexity of her Southern, barrel-aged roots and world traveling, bookworm woman ways will lure you out of the status quo.

Publications like American Songwriter, Rookie, and NPR are taking notice.

Now on the brink of her 30s, fluent in the language of her own self, Adia Victoria stands poised to take her place in a line of true artists. Her mother warned that she feels too much and would be torn up by the world. Adia will tell you that proved to be true. I've felt shredded, but I'm now blessed to embrace the intense feelings as part of my job. That's what I do. It's my bread and butter. My art depends on me feeling and experiencing. I show up, live, and come back and say, oooooh Honey, it was like this...

    Last Days and Time

Last Days and Time is the third studio album by American R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire, released in 1972, their debut album on Columbia Records. It was recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood, California, with founder and multi-instrumentalist Maurice White, Verdine White and Philip Bailey.

Due to their live performances it cemented their status as the main funk band and set the stage for the band's blockbuster breakthrough. Songs on the album like Make It With You (originally from Bread) the pre-Brazilian Rhyme powerful funk sax style Power, (which sounds like an early version of Serpentine Fire) and Remember The Children are excellent examples of the great songs and albums they have made during their career.

    I.T.T.

I.T.T. International Thief Thief (1980) was recorded following Afrika 70's disintegration and the formation of Egypt 80. It is one of a quartet of courageous 1979/80 albums completed by V.I.P. (Vagabonds In Power), Authority Stealing and Coffin For Head Of State. After drummer Tony Allen, who had been with Fela since 1964, quit Afrika 70 in autumn 1978, baritone saxophonist Lekan Animashaun, who had joined Fela in 1965, became Fela's new band, Egypt 80's bandleader. Animashaun is credited as bandleader on I.T.T., which is really an Egypt 80 album even though the band's name is given as Afrika 70 on the sleeve. In "International Thief Thief ," Fela makes highly insulting, personal attacks on former Nigerian president General Obasanjo, and Moshood Abiola, the local chief executive of the multi-national corporations Internal Telephone & Telegraph (ITT) and Decca Records. Obasanjo Fela regarded as a crook, an incompetent and a thug, and held him responsible for the death of his mother following the 1977 sack of Kalakuta. Abiola, he believed, had both cheated him out of royalties and conspired with Decca's London bosses to silence him after the 1977 attack, in order to maintain favourable relations with Obasanjo's regime. Both men, Fela says, are "thieves," "rats" and of "low mentality." "Many foreign companies dey Africa," sings Fela, "carry all our money go, them get one style wey them dey use, them go pick one African man, a man with low mentality, them go give am million naira bread, to become of high position here, him go bribe some thousand naira bread, to become one useless chief, like rat they do them go do from corner corner, passee passee, under under, passee passee, inside inside, passee passee like Obasanjo and Abiola we are tired of carrying their shit." The backing chorus intermittently respond: "International Thief Thief!"

Port O'Brien began as the bedroom recording project of Van Pierszalowski and Cambria Goodwin. As the songs grew legs and spread among friends, live performances became inevitable. Sprouting from the isolated coastal village of Cambria, CA, the band collected kindred spirits along the way and blossomed into a full band. The band released All We Could Do Was Sing in the summer of 2008 which captured the life Van and Cambria lived throughout their never-ending summers in Alaska. Van is a commercial fisherman, spending every summer on his father's fishing boat off the coast of Kodiak Island. Cambria is the head baker at the cannery in Larson Bay, supplying pastries, breads, and deserts for the entire seasonal fishing community. They're seasonal lives changed with the release of their first album however and their inspirations shifted from the desolation of Alaska to the experience of seeing the world.

As 2009 began, the band started to prepare songs for what was to become Threadbare. What started as a light-hearted and loose effort quickly turned into a dense, introspective work following the tragic loss of Cambria's younger brother. Recording in friend Jason Quever's living room studio in San Francisco, the songs were given a certain warmth and intimacy that couldn't be achieved in a larger space. The sense of comfort they found gave them the ability to fully realize the weight of the songs. In the Meantime explores the desire for contentment in tumultuous times. High Without Hope bookends the album, illuminating the emotion and sense of loss that was felt throughout the recording process.

Port O'Brien crafts beautiful, melodic tuens that utilize string instruments to their fullest. And the group is not afraid to rock out. - Billboard

    Ty Segall

The new self-titled record-the next record after Emotional Mugger, Manipulator, Sleeper, Twins, Goodbye Bread, Melted, Lemons, and the first self-titled album that started it up in the now distant year of 2008-is a clean flow, a wash of transparency falling into a world that needs to see a few things through clearly, to their logical end. It's got some of the most lobe-blasting neckwork since the Ty Segall Band's Slaughterhouse (from way back in the long, hot summer of 2012), but it also features a steep flight of fluent acoustic settings, as Ty's new songs range around in their search for freedom without exorcism, flying the dark colors high up the pole in an act of simple self-reclamation. All he wants is some truth!

The construction and destruction of his chosen realities have, until now, been a luxury Ty has rightfully reserved for himself, stripping overdubs together to form the sound-but for this new album, he entered a studio backed by a full band-Emmett Kelly, Mikal Cronin, Charles Moothart and Ben Boye-to get a read on this so-called clarity. This leads to a new departure in group sound, as well as some of the most visceral and penetrating vocal passages yet heard from Ty Segall.

"Freedom/Warm Hands" puts the "sweet" back into suite; "Orange Color Queen" is a supreme moment of tenderness; "Talkin'," a roots-infused truth-attack. "Papers," looks behind the doors of Ty's process; "Break A Guitar" is a brutal fun-fest pitched to the back of the house. Ty Segall keeps you guessing, bracing your skin with a welcome astringency, seeking to stem the bleeding with chunks and splashes of guitar, tight beats, audio-veritÉ toilet smashes, a Wurlitzer electric piano in a jam, blazing harmonies, and LOTS of songs to sing. There's no concept beyond that; finding the right places to be is a momentary thing. Ty Segall is the sum of his songs-and about getting the free. The free to be!

Monkees 50th Anniversary Of Davy Jones' Super Rare 1965 Debut Album

First Time 180 Gram Vinyl With Gatefold Cover

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music & Capitol Mastering

Featuring What Are We Going To Do & Bob Dylans' It Ain't Me Babe

Only in America can a young lad from Manchester, England break into show business playing The Artful Dodger in Oliver in New York City...winning accolades and a Tony Award nomination from the theater world one day.... and then mastering his craft on The Ed Sullivan Show the same night of The Beatles huge breakthrough, then signing a deal with Colpix Records the same night! A year later, he and three other gents became runaway teen idols on television, topping the charts all over the world as The Monkees, outselling The Beatles for a period and maintaining the coveted number one slot with several hit singles and albums over the next few years ..... Only in America.

This isn't make believe. It is the fabulous rise to fame in a hurry story courtesy of a superstar pop rock legend Davy Jones ..and the massive recording career that started with his long out of print first album David Jones.

Recorded throughout 1965 with a bevy of the hottest songwriters in the Columbia Pictures stable, this pop gem contained the rudiments of a major career which has endured for many years since.

Prior to his untimely death in 2012, Davy proudly noted to Friday Music "Did you know that Dream Girl went to number one in Australia?" Relaying the fact that Philly artist Van McCoy wrote this northern soul sounding track, Jones truly smiled at the U.K. term as this song had the arrangements and feel of r&b bands of the day like The Drifters and The Shirelles. This soulful side of Davy Jones would later show up on The Monkees hits like She Hangs Out, A Man Without A Dream and Forget That Girl.

The album's second single What Are We Going To Do? was a slight departure. It followed more of a Brit pop feel, and it warranted solid chart exposure as well as appearances on national TV shows like Shindig!

The brightest stars of the classic pop era also contributed to this album and would soon follow Davy Jones on his path to Monkeemania. Superstars like Carole King/Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, David Gates from Bread, Toni Wine who would later sing lead vocals on The Archies records and Bob Dylan with It Ain't Me Babe, which was also a hit for The Turtles that same year.

Friday Music is proud to offer this fine album for the first time in fifty years! This first time 180 gram audiophile vinyl Lp is now mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso (The Monkees) from the super rare Colpix Records stereo tapes, which truly shows a transition from pop crooner to future rock star.

In 1967, the David Jones l.p. charted thanks to his rise to fame as a member of The Monkees and the album cover was cleverly featured in The Monkees TV show episode, Monkees At The Movies.
