Ranked 417/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

There's little in U2's 1980 debut to suggest that this was a band bent on world domination. Indeed, there's a charming, if naive, coming-of-age urgency in songs such as 'I Will Follow,' 'Stories for Boys' and 'Out of Control' that may startle listeners more familiar with U2's latter-day bombast and stadium-scale theatrics. Bono's viewpoint, still tantalizingly vague and wide-eyed, showed that his penchant for strident polemics hadn't yet gotten the best of him; his anthems are those of a yearning Dubliner barely out of his teens rather than those of a world-weary multimillionaire. The band's sometimes-ragged musical chops work in its favor here, gently burnished to then-fresh new-wave sheen by producer Steve Lillywhite. If the Edge's dense, effects-laden guitar work seems overly familiar, it's only because this album was such a key influence on the whole 'rock of the '80s' sound. Though not quite as moody or musically accomplished as October, arguably the band's first masterpiece, Boy still ranks as one of U2's best albums.

Acclaimed Singer, Songwriter, Band Leader From Ethyl Meatplow
    And The Geraldine Fibbers.

First Solo Album In Seven Years, Following A String Of Releases
    With Her Evangelista Project.

Carla Bozulich is an art-punk heroine with almost three decades of exceptional,
iconoclastic musical activity under her belt. Time and again she has headed up bands that
sound like nothing else and arguably stake out genres unto themselves: the bent agit-prop
of Ethyl Meatplow; the ferocious roots-tinged epic rock of The Geraldine Fibbers; the vocal driven sound-art of Scarnella and Evangelista. Her first "solo" record, the 2003 album-length
cover of Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger, was rightly hailed as a masterpiece of
reinterpretation and recontextualisation. Bozulich now returns with the third record of her
storied career to be issued in her own name, following three albums under the Evangelista
moniker since 2008 (her first record on Constellation, in 2006, was, somewhat confusingly,
released as Carla Bozulich and titled Evangelista).

Boy is Carla's self-proclaimed "pop record" and assuredly it is, albeit in the context of her
sui generis path (by the standards of what our current music culture these days means by
pop crossover tropes and stylistics, perhaps not so much!). Boy is a refreshing reminder of
what pop - as an oblique angle, influence and intent - can yield in the hands of a ferociously
commanding singer/lyricist who has cut her teeth on genre-bending, genre-blending, and
DIY aesthetics for 25 years. Boy is pop-influenced by way of primitivist punk, avant rock,
goth/industrial and lo/mid-fi; a batch of ten songs that clock in at 3 to 5 minutes each, mostly
hewing to recognizable structures of verse, chorus and bridge, but marked by destabilizing
accents and strategies, and nothing that could be mistaken for winking irony, gloss or mere
effect/affect. The songs are driven by hooks and melodies delivered by the singing itself,
with the underlying instrumentation and arrangements always in the service of Carla's voice
and lyrics - in that respect, there is a strong through-line from the Evangelista albums. But
Boy sharpens and focuses each song's intent and structure; unlike most of the Evangelista
work, this new album would not be mistaken for sound art, dark ambient, or quasi-Industrial
music (except perhaps on "One Hard Man" and "Number X").

As Bozulich points out in the liner notes, Boy is also not strictly speaking a "solo" album.
While she wrote and recorded everything, and played the majority of the instruments, it was
also aided and abetted throughout by a close creative partnership with John Eichenseer (aka
JHNO, Spool) who provided musical and technical input throughout the 2+ years of the
making of the album. The two have traveled and played together all over North America,
Europe and beyond, remaining purposefully uprooted and nomadic, piecing the record
together along the way. Guided by some of Bozulich's most perceptive, reflective, economical
and honest lyrics, Boy stakes out a poetics of eulogy in all the breadth and nuance of the
term - celebration, memorial, rhapsody, survival; this album unfurls a beautiful, unsettling
narrative wrung from an artistic life of unflinching creative experience, commitment, courage
and learning. And no small measure of genuine, well-earned wisdom. It's also fun.

Boy is the sharpest, supplest, most satisfying and most generous album that Bozulich has
made in recent years. It also happens to be one of her most immediately accessible, while
sacrificing nothing of her inimitable sound and vision. It is a definitive expression - and
should serve as a welcome reminder - of Bozulich's tremendous talent, taste and trajectory.

    Boy King

Wild Beasts have announced their new album Boy King, their most direct and vital collection to date.

Where 2014's Present Tense album found Wild Beasts in reflective mood, absorbing a fascination with
online culture and electronic music, Boy King has them, as Tom Fleming puts it, "back to being pissed
off". The quartet's ever-present knack for sensual melody via Hayden Thorpe and Fleming's dueting
vocals, Ben Little's sinuous guitar groove and Chris Talbot's potent rhythm section carries in Boy King an
aggressive, snarling and priapic beast that delves into the darker side of masculinity and Thorpe's own
psyche. As Hayden himself says, "After five records there had to be an element of 'what the fuck?'".

A newfound creative friction between Thorpe and Fleming proved key to unleashing the unique pop
sensibility of Boy King - Fleming's more visceral experimentation unlocking new dimensions in Thorpe's
own writing. After spending a whole year finessing this new found impetus in East London, the band
emerged with a collection of songs ready to take to Dallas, TX and producer John Congleton (St.
Vincent, Swans, The War on Drugs). Both Thorpe and Fleming credit that trip to Dallas with teasing out
the raw power of Boy King.

The raw pop of Boy King's songs are the perfect foil to Thorpe's libidinous lyricism: "it became apparent
that that guitar almost became the character within the songs, that phallic character, the all-conquering
male," he says. "I'm letting my inner Byron fully out, I thought I'd tucked him away, but he came
screaming back like the Incredible Hulk." Here lies Boy King's greatest success. Between the slide of
prowling aggression and interior darkness, there are glorious, gorgeous moments. It's yet another
incomparable Wild Beasts record; a visceral, sensual and jolting body of work that acts as a remarkable
soundtrack to the early 21st century male malaise.

    Pleasure Boy

Music often comes from a deep place, and in the case of Hannah Cohen's stunning and heartrending second album, it's very deep indeed. Mainly inspired by a painful break-up and the anxieties that loss can trigger, Pleasure Boy cushions its sadness in an exquisitely nuanced soundscape of aching melancholy and lush melody where Hannah's vocal conveys all the different shades of heartbreak. Following the album's completion, she's survived the calamity and found a new level of happiness, but to paraphrase the classic Sixties hit, there will always be something there to remind her with Pleasure Boy.

'Pleasure Boy', like her debut 'Child Bride', was produced by Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman, whose work with artists such as The National, Antony Hegarty and David Byrne singles him out as one of America's current finest producers and collaborators, though he's also a talented pianist. The dynamics of 'Pleasure Boy' was the result of Hannah and Bartlett, "bunkering down with my songs, experimenting with different tones and sounds, and layering them. My first record was so airy and roomy, I didn't have patience for that again, I wanted more movement, something more mysterious and witchier, so we created this sound wall together."

"I wanted the music to hurt, to have a visceral effect," Hannah says. Her voice sometimes sounds delirious or icy; other times she recalls the vulnerable, piercing beauty of Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays) and Karen Peris (The Innocence Mission). But Pleasure Boy's sound wouldn't exist without the vision that launched it. The album title arrived as the record took shape. "Pleasure Boy is a character of who it's about, someone who represents gluttony and decadence and richness," Hannah explains. She admits it was a tough record to make, given she was aiming to heal emotionally while feeling "devastated and hurt. But it wouldn't be the record it is if I hadn't done that."

    Excitable Boy

Excitable Boy is the third album by Warren Zevon, released in 1978. It includes the top 40 success Werewolves of London, featuring Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass. The album brought Warren to commercial attention and remains the best-selling album of his career.

The tracks Excitable Boy and Werewolves of London were considered macabrely humorous by some critics. The historical Veracruz dramatizes the United States occupation of Veracruz, and likewise Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner is a fictionalization of a mercenary in Africa. Lawyers, Guns and Money is a tongue-in-cheek take on Cold War paranoia. In addition, there are two ballads about life and relationships (Accidentally Like a Martyr and Tenderness on the Block), as well as a dance tune (Nighttime in the Switching Yard).

Additional musicians included in the album's creation are band members Jorge Calderón on vocals, Danny Kootch Kortchmar on percussion and guitar, and Russ Kunkel on drums. Among others, also Jackson Browne, Jeff Porcaro, Linda Ronstadt and Waddy Wachtel are featured as session musicians.

Tricky is back with a brand new album titled Knowle West Boy, named after the Bristol neighborhood where he grew up. The album finds Tricky seizing his roots and detailing the travels and travails of his youth, resulting in a record that acts as an eclectic aural history of his diverse upbringing. Produced by Tricky, and mixed by Switch (MIA, Santogold) Knowle West Boy was recorded in London and L.A. and is the summation of everything he has accomplished since his brilliant 1995 Maxinquaye debut. The album finds Tricky reaching into the post-punk, Two-Tone, reggae, hip hop and pop he grew up adoring and twisting it all into surreal songscapes. From the sardonic bar-room blues of Puppy Toy, to the twisted Specials-worshipping, hard charging punk of lead single Council Estate, to the bereft torchery of Past Mistake, to the Roxy Music's The Bogus Man-at-the-dancehall art-stomp of Bacative; Tricky uses his astonishingly eclectic band and a host of great undiscovered singers to create the most varied and accessible set of his career.

Its enough to make you stop and say, What is that? It being the gorgeous melodies and lean, spellbound guitar lines of Colin Caulfield, an English/French lit major whos about to change what it means to be a shapeshifting singer-songwriter in the YouTube age.

Just ask Bradford Cox. He knows. Why, just a year ago, the Deerhunter frontman stumbled upon Colin Caulfields organ-grinding rendition of Rainwater Cassette Exchange and said its fantastically superior to the original. It actually sent shivers up my spine, especially during the second verse.

Believe it or not, that chilling cover was just a warmup session. As killer as he is at capturing the very essence of everything from Animal Collective to Ariel Pink, Caulfieds true talent is in telling his own Young Man stories. The first chapter of which goes by the name Boy, a deceivingly-simple suite of songs about wanting to grow up without having the slightest idea of what being a man actually means.

Now thats a reason to hit rewind, from the tone-setting tenderness and psych-infused harmonies of Five to the restless rhythms (Caulfield was a drummer well before he became a singer/guitarist) and room-engulfing intimacy of Up So Fast. Both of which feature some of the most hopeful/haunting choruses youll hear all year.

And thats just the beginning, of course. Since Young Man was conceived as a concept project about the passing of time, love, and loss, Caulfield already has two loosely-linked LPs on tap, a faceless collection of fragile characters that could be any one of us, really.

A lot of its autobiographical, explains Caulfield, but its universal at the same time, because everyone goes through these things.

Listen closely. Itll all make sense soon enough. Trust us.

Copper-embossed, gatefold tip-on jackets from Stoughton

Broken Boy Soldiers is the debut album from the Raconteurs. By pairing pop songsmith Brendan Benson with hard-rocking Jack White (the White Stripes) and backing them with the crack rhythm section of Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler (both of the Greenhornes) what resulted is a completely kick-ass album. From the anthemic volley of Steady, As She Goes to the sing-songy crunch of Hands and the downright sinister slow creep of Blue Veins this album covers the complete range of human emotion.

Broken Boy Soldiers is the first proper vinyl reissue from Third Man (both the V2 and XL versions of this LP are out-of-print) with plans to tackle the rest of the White Stripes and Jack White back catalog already in the works. Third Man aims for these reissues to be the definitive, go-to versions of all their titles and this issue of Broken Boy Soldiers definitely earns that distinction.

1991 will forever be remembered as the year that alternative rock broke through to the masses. It seemed like every other week there was another great new alt-rock album to discover, such as Nirvana's Nevermind, Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger, Primus's Sailing The Seas of Cheese, and the Smashing Pumpkins' Gish, so Mudhoney couldn't have picked a better time to issue their sophomore release. Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge was issued right in the middle of the whole grunge movement, and while it didn't sell in the vast quantities of some other Seattle bands' albums, it did stir up quite a buzz for Mudhoney. Some of the band's finest moments are included here, such as Generation Genocide, Let it Slide, Into the Drink, Who You Drivin' Now? and Fuzzgun '91.

    Frankie Welfare Boy Age Five

With Frankie Welfare Boy Age Five, Braid introduced itself to a national audience, one which it would continue to build over years of extensive touring and the release of two more full-lengths, nine 7s and numerous compilation appearances. FWBA5 is a meticulously crafted record that never once feels anything other than raw and organic. Featuring a more aggressive, hardcore-influenced sound than later Braid releases, the songs are never uniform and always challenging, continually changing tone, volume and structure within their short time spans. With 26 blistering tracks in just under 60 minutes, the members of Braid simultaneously encapsulated and redefined the Midwest scene from which they came. Deluxe 15-year anniversary 2xLP edition with detailed liner notes and lyrics. Re-mastered by John Golden (Nirvana, Melvins, Sonic Youth).

Black Sheep Boy (10th Anniversary Edition)

In celebration of the ten-year anniversary of this iconic album, Jagjaguwar is proud to present the Black Sheep Boy 10th Anniversary Edition, a three-LP set combining the classic Black Sheep Boy album and its counterpart the Black Sheep Boy Appendix with an all new unreleased album entitled There Swims a Swan: full-band recordings made six months prior to the release of Black Sheep Boy which illuminate the album's roots in the traditional American songbook.

Featuring beautiful, emotional readings of songs popularized by such artists as Washington Phillips, Lead Belly, the Louvin Brothers, and Roscoe Holcomb, There Swims a Swan takes the listener on a trip through the songs that inspired Sheff while composing Black Sheep Boy and reads like a run-through of that album's themes. Black Sheep Boy is celebrated for its album artwork as well as its music, and the Anniversary Edition collects that artwork in a meticulously reworked package, combining every previous element of William Schaff's imagery with a large new piece by Schaff depicting an updated Black Sheep Boy. The release also includes lengthy liner notes by Will Sheff walking the listener through the circumstances surrounding the album.

For Okkervil River fans (the most high-profile of whom was recently revealed to be President Barack Obama, who included Down Down the Deep River on his 2015 summer playlist), the Anniversary Edition is a loving, comprehensive, richly expanded presentation of a record many consider to be one of the band's best. For those new to the band, this might be the best place to start, the first step on a long road, the opening to a forest you can get lost in.

Bad The John Boy (Awaiting Repress)

On the heels of David Lynch's hugely successful sophomore full length, The Big Dream, comes a very limited edition 12, "Bad the John Boy." While technically this track qualifies as a non-album or bonus track, Dean Hurley, Lynch's producer had this to say about the song: "it wasn't really recorded with the lP in
mind, but it was done around the end of last year when the bulk of the album
was being made. It was earmarked for something else entirely, but that thing
didn't happen in a way that required the song so up until now, it was 'a song
    with no home.' "

    Complimenting Lynch's left-of-center A-side, the B-side proudly features a
Venetian Snares remix of the album's title track. Despite the fact that Canadian
electronic musician Aaron Funk has been known for reinventing breakcore,
with this remix he breathes a completely new approach into the song, turning it
into something far from your typical dance remix. Hurley describes this track
as, "music for the end crawl of a bootlegged sci-fi/horror film that you borrowed
from your friend's older brother and caused you to realize for the first time that
you were actually scared in broad daylight."
