Born To Die'
UNIM-INT-0915xLana Del Rey
Born To DieLake Placid, NY native Lana Del Rey is a throwback singer/songwriter whose stage name combines that of the late Hollywood actress Lana Turner and the Ford Del Rey. Pop's newest femme fatale calls herself the gangsta Nancy Sinatra and cites Kurt Cobain, Thomas Newman and Bruce Springsteen as musical influences. She released an EP entitled Kill Kill in 2009 under the name Lizzy Grant and also recorded a full-length album on an independent label with producer David Kahne, which was released for a brief time before it was pulled due to lack of label support. Born To Die is her highly anticipated official debut release on Interscope Records featuring the viral firestorm hits Video Games and Blue Jeans. Her much talked about appearance on Saturday Night Live on January 15, 2012 marked the first artist since Natalie Imbruglia in 1998 to perform before the release of her debut album.1. Born To Die

Die Healing (Awaiting Repress)"Die Healing" featuring original SAINT VITUS vocalist Scott Reagers! This is essential doom!!!!
Recommended if You Like: BLACK SABBATH, TROUBLE, COUNT RAVEN, CANDLEMASS, THE OBSESSED, HIGH ON FIRE, SLEEP, BARONESS, MASTODON, SIR LORD BALTIMORE
Die Healing is a pivotal point in Vitus' discog; not only their very last before they temporarily ended their relentlessly classic doom metal album releases with a thirteen year hiatus, but their third recording with Scott Reagers, who helped make the eponymous debut, Hallow's Victim and EP The Walking Dead such milestones of doom. And what a way to go out. Many will tell you this is actually Saint Vitus' finest moment, and although I favour the debut and Wino's career zenith Born Too Late above it, there is no doubt it deserves as solid a place in the pantheon of doom as Nightfall or Master Of Reality or In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend.
The band's sound and instrumentation is class without question. The guitar tone saw a slight departure from the fuzz prevalent on Wino-albums (including the 2012 opus Lillie: F-65), with something more of an electric edge familiar to C.O.D. Fret not, the tone is still plenty burly, and of course massively appropriate for the toking of vaporous substances.
The guitar solos are likewise a little clearer - though of course solos like on 'One Mind' and 'Return Of The Zombie' have that inimitable Chandler scaling chaos in spades, squeaking like a dozen metal detectors malfunctioning. In general though the album's sound gives the feeling of the band moving forward with the sound established on the underappreciated, Chritus Linderson-assisted C.O.D., while welcoming their original singer back into the fold as easily as if he'd never left. It comes together brilliantly.
What cements the album's place atop the pile of '90s Vitus releases is that it's a lot more solid than V and C.O.D. in terms of songs, chock full of highlights with nary a skippable track. 'Dark World' heralds absolutely no messing about, a timeless slow burn Saint Vitus classic to get you going. Reagers unlocks his trademark moon-touched howls, boosted here with a gruffness and depth that must have come with age. He can still hit the unnerving highs that made the debut such a unique piece. Not to mention his more aghast and tragic-heroic style is accompanied by a lyrical shift toward tales of horror and myth, adding further colours of yore to the band's solidified musical approach (although 'In The Asylum' is as brilliantly witty a tale of human disintegration as anything Wino has written for Vitus).
Some of the great knells peeling off Chandler's guitar in the main riff of 'Let The End Begin' are highlights for Vitus' entire career. It climaxes with a great rocking section, splashed with sumptuous guitar and bass solos, in a move actually quite uncharacteristic for the band, who tended to steer between leadweight trawling songs and more rambunctious cuts. The eerie build on 'Sloth' is another of the band's best moments. The entire song, with its off-kilter structure and wailing chorus, is an example of just how muscular the band's creative fibers were at the time. 'Return of the Zombie', a quasi-sequel to the classic, shifty song off the debut of course, makes its mark with a crazed vocal performance and some spooky effects. And of course there's more, I've just listed a few real standouts but the album is too generous in its blessings for them to be exhaustively listed.
It's just a really solid album that builds on all the best things the band had done to date while keeping the songwriting fresh. What a swansong this was. This album is the reason Lillie: F-65 had such vast expectations from me. A must have.

Send Them All To HellThe German PANZER, the Teutonic Heavy Metal trio, is comprised of yet three undisputed genre legends: Vocalist & bass-player Schmier, best known as frontman of DESTRUCTION and HEADHUNTER, guitarist Herman Frank (ACCEPT, VICTORY) as well as drummer Stefan Schwarzmann (ACCEPT).
The initial idea was born when drummer Stefan Schwarzmann, who has relocated to Switzerland about seven years ago, had a chat with the owner of renowned Swiss club Z7 in Pratteln. The two tried to figure out a way to fill the empty space within touring and recording, the venue has been facing with its most frequently playing bands. To make a long story short: Nobert Mandel (owner of Z7) had the idea of a trio, with both Stefan and Herman in it. The only vacancy for bass and vocals wouldn't stay open for long, as Stefan had the phone number and mail address of DESTRUCTION's Schmier right at hand - and so "The German Panzer" was born!
Commented vocalist & bass-player Schmier: "When Stefan Schwarzmann, drummer of ACCEPT and an old friend came to me with the idea of putting a band together, I first thought he tried to fool me hahaha! But the idea sounded amazing from the beginning and after the first meeting with Herman Frank, the German guitar legend, that everybody knows from his work with ACCEPT and VICTORY and Stefan, we realized really fast, that this team could really kick some serious ass together. And Instead of talking too long about it, we started writing songs right away and within some weeks had half of the album recorded and it sounded wicked! We don t wanna re-invent the metal-wheel. We play the music we love, easy as that and it's great fun cause we all dig this shit since we are teenagers!
Naming a band after fierce war machinery might seem a bit off for some, but if you take a look at the lyrics, this is picture perfect. The lyrics provoke, criticize and are part of the art. "My lyrics criticize... I don t pray," adds Schmier.
And as difficult as the search for a name was at first, with all members being German die-hards and organizers of the Teutonic scene, The German PANZER seemed to be the name everybody remembers right away.
As for the album title, »Send Them All To Hell« was almost mandatory, as these are the first words to be heard on the record, with Schmier whispering them into the mic. With the exception of one track that feature all three members, all songs are written entirely by Herman Frank and Schmier.
If you like it heavy, more melodic or if you dig Speed Metal, then The German PANZER will hit right on - Or to say it with Herman Frank: "No left - no right! Just straight forward like a Panzer!1. Death knell

After the huge commercial breakthrough of Superunknown-where Soundgarden expanded its attack to include pop hooks, psychedelic riffage, and production values-the foursome decided to work harder at rocking harder.
From the opening chords of Pretty Noose, the group brings out the brawny guitars and slightly leavens them with sweet harmonies. With Rhinosaur, Kim Thayil churns out more guitar-hero riffs for young America to master. Zero Chance turns to the quiet side as Chris Cornell ruminates in a depressive mood: Born without a friend/And bound to die alone. Ty Cobb floors the acceleration with no brakes. Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs is evoked within Tighten & Tighter, while No Attention ventures toward Rocks-era Aerosmith, an occasional Soundgarden touchstone.
The album's obvious centerpiece, however, is Blow Up the Outside World, with its mix of acoustic and electric guitars; it builds toward a cathartic chorus that rings true of everything Soundgarden could ever be.LP 1

Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?They say there's no time like the present; what they really mean is there's no such thing as the present. Five seconds into the future will be five seconds in the past once you finish reading this sentence. Translated into rock 'n' roll, terms, it means you're either ahead of your time or past your prime. And we're cool with that. We like categories and demographics and timelines because they allow us not to think; everything can be explained with the check of a box or a dot on a graph. But Metric don't let you off that easy. Their measures are decidedly cubist: eternal, multilayered portraits of instantaneous moments, the luminous blur of street life rendered as a freeze-tableaux, daily rituals portrayed in a fantastical light. This is music born out of sly, considered observation instead of gratuitous introspection - which makes it refreshingly anomalous in an era when so much popular music fudges the line between self-absorption and self-parody. Their debut album, OLD WORLD UNDERGROUND, WHERE ARE YOU NOW? launched Metric's career and helped to usher in a wave (or New Wave) of Canadian indie bands such as Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire. They have since gone on to sell over a million singles and 500,000 albums worldwide. Finally available on vinyl, the album sounds as urgent and timeless today as it did in 2003 and like all of Metric's music to date, OLD WORLD UNDERGROUND, WHERE ARE YOU NOW? isn't so much a summation of influences as experiences. Major HandyMajor Handy was actually born Joseph Majay Handy, May 15, 1947. He thinks, if he understands what his mother's told him, that his parents had a child before him and named that boy Joseph Majay Handy. That son died near birth, and when the couple had their next child, also a boy, they decided to reuse the name. Eventually, after people had trouble recognizing the correct pronunciation, the middle name Majay morphed into Major. He says he did go by his first name initially. A lot of people called me 'Joe,' but that didn't ring no bell. And so, Major Handy it became.
Handy was born and raised as the oldest of seven children in St. Martinville, Louisiana, the parish seat of St. Martin Parish and right on the Bayou Teche. It's a rural town about 15 miles southeast of Lafayette and is generally considered the heart of the Creole and Cajun melting pot that makes this specific sub-region unique to anywhere else in the world. It's from right here that so much of the culture - the food, music, swamp life - that people associate with Louisiana comes.
Like with many people from St. Martinville, Handy's heritage is Creole, meaning it's tangled. I'm like a gumbo - everything. Alligator, fish, shrimp, Indian, Negro, white, whatever...I guess that's what that is. But I was raised as a black person, he says. The only time I ever mingled with white people was the music thing. 'Cause I didn't go to school with white people. I quit school in the ninth grade (just before school desegregation in Louisiana).
Handy's earliest musical inspiration came from his father, who had an old accordion that he toyed with as nothing more than a pastime, and some cousins who were fooling around with music. I saw that, and I wanted to take it and be better, Handy says. The first thing I picked up was a guitar. And I took it from there. His first professional gig came on bass in a cousin's band. From there it was back to guitar and eventually accordion as a bandleader. In between, he played in the bands of Rockin' Dopsie for many years as well as in the very first incarnation of Buckwheat Zydeco just after Buckwheat had left Clifton Chenier.
While he'd recorded previously as a bandleader, Handy's 2008 APO Records release Zydeco Feeling marked his first widely distributed release in 25 years.1. Jalapeno Cornbread

Single MothersAfter two and a half years since his last release, Justin Townes Earle is back and pleased to announce his fifth studio album (and first ever on Vagrant
Records), Single Mothers.
Single Mothers is comprised of ten tracks that showcase exactly why Justin Townes Earle is considered a forefather of Contemporary Americana. As a
recently married, sober man JTE writes from a point of maturity and content we've not seen before on past records. "One day I just realized it's not cool to
die young, and it's even less cool to die after 30," Justin laughs as he reflects on a life past and his new found clarity. What he's created is an album that's
raw, honest and personal in a way he hasn't touched upon since his debut EP, Yuma.
Once compared to a man who wears many suits JTE has experienced more than most, both personally and professionally, in thirty-two short years.
Between releasing four full-length-critically-acclaimed albums, constant touring, multiple stints in rehab, being born Steve Earle's son, amicable and not-so-amicable break-ups with record labels, and facing the trials and tribulations of everyday life, it's safe to say JTE has quite the story to tell. The Black ChordBorn in San Diego but bred in the mists of Avalon, Astra have fast-become a synonym for the ethereal, the sublime, and indeed the genuinely progressive. Ever since 2009's The Weirding put these analog-inflected San Diego visionaries on the map alongside the likes of co-conspirators Earthless, Diagonal and Dungen, who like some lost tribe of prog faithful - have brought this unwieldly and much maligned form of music out of the dark ages and in front of a new generation of mellotron-loving cognoscenti.
Limited gatefold special die cut vinyl edition with attached booklet
Think wailing guitars and dulcet harmonies thickened by Mellotrons and given hypnotic qualities by the kind of drumming that borders on the shamanic. Cinematic in scope but frequently yielding to a kind of melodic fragility that can only be the product of genuine emotion. Hail Mega Boys (Awaiting Repress)First Time On Vinyl
Available for the first time on vinyl as the band approaches the historic milestone of performing live on stage together for the thousandth time is the classic debut from J. Roddy Walston and the Business, the band many have come to hail as the Megaboys of Rock'n'Roll. This release has been re-mastered from the original source by the audio wizards at Lord Baltimore Recording Studio.
Born and raised near Chattanooga, TN, J. Roddy Walston is the only limb left on the once-proud family tree of the Roddy clan. It was in the Smoky Mountain hollers of Tennessee that he was raised on the Music of God and taught to play rock and roll by the hand of the Devil. As a child, his grandmother turned down the Grand Ole Opry to sing only for God and family, while his uncle chose to drink himself to death in the real honky-tonks rather than heed the calls of the Nashville hit-makers that constantly beckoned. After young Roddy watched both punctuate their refusals with the business end of a shotgun, he decided not to let the family die nameless. In as much an attempt to bring due credit to his kin as a desire to rebel against what they stood for, he moved from the shadows and secrets of the South into the spotlight and temptations of the North. Whether by divine appointment or a cocktail devised by the Devil, no one knows, but by the time he reached Baltimore, a vicious band of players had gathered around him. Together, they've been begging rock n' roll to respect its past and teaching old music new tricks. It's as though every time they strike a note goat piss is turning into gasoline...nothing less than a modern rock n' roll miracle.I'll Tell You What

Greyhound Blues / Lonesome Old JailDaniel Augusta Hunt, better known as Junior Hunt, was born in Munford, AL in 1929. On or around March 11th, 1953, Hunt recorded these two songs at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis and they were released in June of that year. For over 50 years, these songs were believed to only exist in 78 rpm form, until a copy pressed as a 45 rpm 7'' single turned up in Minnesota. This only known copy was sold on eBay in 2010 for $10,323. This marks the first legitimate release of Hunt's material on a 7'' record, and both songs are outstanding examples of the heartbreaking, desolate nature of the solo bluesman accompanying himself on guitar and borrow heavily from the template set by Lightnin' Hopkins. Hunt was arrested in Memphis in 1958 for stealing a saxophone and died in May 1962 in Phoenix, AZ.A: Greyhound Blues

ADAD-TEN-3934xWillis Earl Beal
NoctunesWillis Earl Beal was born on the South Side of Chicago. He would never consider it home. An odd kid, he spent a lot of his youth talking with his grandmother, who would entertain his endless questions about the universe and encourage his love of drawing. He developed an obsession with Batman that would last well into his teenage years, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a form of vigilante training. Willis Earl Beal died on an army base in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. While in boot camp he was plagued with physical and mental abuse, health complications (which would later require surgery and the removal of large portions of his intestine) forced his discharge. He moved back home. "When that all broke down," Beal says. "I lost a piece of myself." Willis Earl Beal was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After a stint of homelessness there, he worked odd jobs and rented a studio apartment. Though he'd never learned to play any instruments, he began to record raw, lo-fi albums with hand-drawn covers that he'd leave at coffee shops around town alongside flyers seeking a girlfriend with his phone number written on them. Those artifacts would eventually find their way to the cover of Found magazine, then to Jamie-James Medina at XL Recordings. Beal signed with XL's Hot Charity imprint in 2012. Willis Earl Beal died in New York City. Despite the release of two critically well-received albums on XL-Acousmatic Sorcery, a collection of his early home recordings, and a fully orchestrated studio album he recorded in Amsterdam called Nobody Knows-he was a mess. "I'd drink myself into stupors," he says. "I'd walk around in the daytime, crying, then I'd go downtown. The police would bring me home in the morning." Willis Earl Beal was born on a lake twenty miles outside Olympia, Washington. After ending his contract with XL, Beal went to live in the woods, and began an artistic transformation entirely of his own design, from rough-edged outsider-art provocateur to the kind of mysterious crooner one might expect to haunt the outskirts of Twin Peaks. "People had all these ideas about what I was supposed to be," he says. "I had only ever wanted to make lullabies." Beal's development played out over two self-released EPs and a full-length album, and then Beal built the patient, ambient-leaning Noctunes. The album's twelve songs are moving and meditative, thoroughly soaked with mournful synth strings and simple lyricism that Beal says is intentionally minimalistic. "I wanted to create this persona that could say everything perfectly with very little," Beal says. "The record, to me, is a perfect record. I listen to that thing a lot, and it helps me." Willis Earl Beal has yet to be born. Critics and publicists defined him before he'd had a chance to define himself. Their expectations were inextricably linked with race and gender, two concepts Beal thoroughly rejects. Now, two extremely productive years removed from the spotlight, Beal doesn't feel pressure to define himself against anything. His new music is shockingly original, utterly confident, and as ephemeral as Beal himself. He levitates above definition, concerned only with self-discovery and truth-seeking. "I know it sounds falsely altruistic," he says. "But I think a simple voice like mine can serve as an example of some kind of freedom."1. Under You

Devil's HaloDevils Halo, Meshell Ndegeocello's 8th album, harkens back to the way records used to be made with live band energy and phenomenal musicianship. Influenced by a breadth of sounds, from The Human League to Wu Tang to Yes, Devils Halo displays Meshells own diversity of formidable gifts. Always the uncompromising artist and bass player, this record brings a broad range of musical and lyrical voices and selves: the searcher, the skeptic, the dissenter, and the lover. True to form, Meshell offers compositions with raging climaxes alongside moments of terrifying tenderness and honesty. Genre-defiant as ever, Devils Halo asks for the real fans of exploration to please stand up.
Canonized, marginalized or just scrutinized, Meshell Ndegeocello has given up with the politics of explaining herself. After 20 years in an industry that has called her everything from avant garde to a dying breed, what unquestionably remains is the fearsome bassist, prolific songwriter and the creativity and curiosity of an authentic musical force. With that, she has earned critical acclaim, the unfailing respect of fellow players, songwriters and composers, and the dedication of her diverse, unclassifiable fans. For the sake of setting the record straight, a few brass tacks remain: Meshell was born in Germany, raised in DC, signed at 23, and has been nominated for 10 Grammy awards.1. Slaughter

Mississippi's Son House was already legendary for a small collection of live field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in 1941 and 1942, and for having taught some important licks to both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters before he was rediscovered by a new generation of college-age fans in 1964.
The Father of the Delta Blues recorded this namesake LP for Columbia Records a year later in 1965. It's become, in the words of Living Blues magazine - Essential recordings by one of the greatest bluesmen ever. And now, Analogue Productions presents a reissue unmatched in sonic quality and luxury presentation. For our version we turned to Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound to remaster the recording from the original master tapes. The freshly cut lacquers were then plated and pressed on 200-gram vinyl by our own Quality Record Pressings.
Son was born Eddie James House, Jr., on March 21, 1902, in Riverton, Miss. By the age of 15, he was preaching the gospel in various Baptist churches as the family seemingly wandered from one plantation to the next. He didn't even bother picking up a guitar until he turned 25; to quote House, I didn't like no guitar when I first heard it; oh gee, I couldn't stand a guy playin' a guitar. I didn't like none of it. But if his ambivalence to the instrument was obvious, even more obvious was the simple fact that Son hated plantation labor even more and had developed a taste for corn whiskey. After drunkenly launching into a blues at a house frolic in Lyon, Miss., one night and picking up some coin for doing it, the die seemed to be cast; Son House may have been a preacher, but he was part of the blues world now.
Now, sit back and enjoy one of the genre's greatest, on a reissue that's the best that's been made to date. So authentic, so real - that's the Analogue Productions difference.

Husband And Wife Were Angry One Night (Awaiting Repress)Born in North Carolina in 1892, singer and banjo player Charlie Poole is often considered to be one of the grandfathers of bluegrass and modern country music. Poole recorded 60 songs during the 1920s for Columbia Records with his wildly popular North Carolina Ramblers, so this LP is a small sampling of some of his very best songs, many of which, like his first big hit for Columbia, Dont Let Your Deal Go Down Blues are blues standards. Although Poole died of an alcohol-induced heart failure at just 39 years old, he still had plenty of time to influence bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe, and more indirectly, Hank Williams and the folk singers of the 1960s. Although Poole wrote none of his own material, his genius lay in his unique ability to rework a song, by changing lyrics and tempo, to make it something entirely new. In fact, many fans bought his records just to see how Charlie did it. His North Carolina Ramblers sold huge numbers of records for the time and Poole became one of the first country music stars.1. Ranie Burnette's Hill Country BluesRanie Burnette was born on July 4th, 1913 in Pleasant Grove, MS, located in Panola County. While he was known to have played local dances and juke joints in the hill country of North Mississippi during the 1940's and 50's, competing with the likes of Fred McDowell, no known recordings of Ranie were made until the 70's and early 80's while he was living in Senatobia.
During that time he recorded two sides for a regional 45 single and was later recorded by Leo Bruin, both in Senatobia and during a trip Ranie made to the Netherlands. Some of those recordings appear on the Swingmaster CD Going Down South, along with tracks by harmonica player Johnny Woods and R.L. Burnside, whom Ranie mentored and often played with.
Burnette's music, like the aforementioned artists, is strongly rooted in the rhythmic tradition of the fife and drum bands from the region, which you'll hear on this 11-song collection, also recorded by Leo Bruin. Ranie Burnette died in Memphis, TN, on January 23, 2000 and is buried in the cemetery at Ebeneezer Missionary Baptist Church in Como, MS.1. Coal Black Mattie

Fire On The FloorBeth Hart is on fire. Right now, the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter is riding a creative tidal wave, firing out acclaimed albums, hooking up with the biggest names in music and rocking the house each night with that celebrated burnt-honey voice. In 2016, the headline news is Beth's latest album, Fire On The Floor: a release that even this fiercely self-critical artist describes as "pretty frickin' good".
Fire On The Floor is sure to build on her breakneck momentum. As the singer explains, this latest record gave her an emotional release following the bitter-sweet sessions for Better Than Home. If there's a theme that ties these twelve songs together, it's a sense of escapism following the hardest of times. "We were still in the mixing stages for that album and I knew I had to make another record. Making Better Than Home was so painful, because one of the producers, Michael Stevens, was dying of cancer. It was a very emotional record to write and to make. I wanted the songs for Fire On The Floor to get born real quick."
Take a spin of Fire On The Floor and you'll see exactly why. These twelve new songs run the gamut of genre, reflecting Beth's eclectic teenage influences, which took in everything from gospel, soul and classical to the seismic rock of Soundgarden. "As a writer," she nods, "I feel really stifled if I'm trying to write in the same style. I just can't do that. Growing up as a kid, I was raised all over the place stylistically, loving so many different genres."
Fire On The Floor is the album that Beth Hart needed to make. Likewise, it's a record that you need to hear. "I'm so pleased with it," she concludes. "I recently had to organize the sequence of the record, and while I was doing that, I was thinking to myself, 'Y'know, this is pretty frickin' good !'"1. Jazz Man

Shine On Rainy DayOut on Low Country Sounds/Elektra Records, Shine On Rainy Day was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, etc.) and recorded live over four days in Nashville.
Of the music and working with producer (and cousin) Dave Cobb, Brent comments, "It's not as good as it's going to get. But if it's the last thing that I ever do, if I died the day after it came out, then thank God I was able to record it because the songs and the production, it was everything I wanted to say. Finally."
Dave adds, "I wanted to work with Brent for very selfish reasons. When he lifts a pen and opens his mouth, it sounds like home. I did his record because he's part of the fabric of South Georgia and the soundtrack to my family. Pure rural country soul filled music."
Already receiving notice, Brent was recently featured on WXPN's World CafÉ (listen to the full session here), while Rolling Stone featured him as one of their "30 Must-See Acts" at CMA Fest 2016, asserting, "Live, he's every bit the charming raconteur, setting up catchy rural anthems that have the loose and earthy feel of a front porch sing-along."
Additionally, earlier this year, Brent was featured on Dave's widely praised Southern Family compilation-contributing the song "Down Home" and writing the standout "Sweet By & By," which was recorded by Miranda Lambert. Of "Down Home," Wide Open Country declares, " one of the most earnest and accurate retellings of everyday life in rural Georgia. The mixture of Cobb's charming southern drawl, brilliant storytelling and flawless production melds into a track that is impossible to resist."
Born in Ellaville, GA (population 1,609), Brent moved to Nashville in 2008 and has since found widespread success as a writer with songs recorded by Lambert ("Old Shit"), Kenny Chesney ("Don't It"), Luke Bryan ("Tailgate Blues"), David Nail ("Grandpa's Farm"), Kellie Pickler ("Rockaway") and Eli Young Band ("Go Outside and Dance") among others.1. The Last SpireImport
And lo, Lee Dorrian, mouthpiece of Cathedral for 23 years, doth solemnly intone the death rites of this mighty British metal Titan. Born in the dying days of Thatcher's Britain, bonding over then-unfashionable, obscure names like Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Trouble and Dream Death, Cathedral's sole ambition was to record a demo tape. In fact they revolutionised doom metal, first pushing their influences into new avenues of grinding extremity, then pioneering groovier forms of '70s-indebted stoner doom.
They've remained a reassuring and singular presence in our lives, building a rabid following worldwide with their wholly distinctive blend of rollicking British heavy metal, true doom, 70s hard rock, psych-folk, mad prog and spiky crust-punk. There was a worrying hiatus between 2005 and 2010 when some dared to wonder if Cathedral were coming back at all - but they re-emerged with 'The Guessing Game', an overflowing treasure chest of weird and wonderful goodies exploring new, bold variations on their craft. So when news came that Cathedral really were approaching the Endtyme, it was a shock.
Personally speaking, this is the album I've been waiting to do since the first one (their landmark 1991 debut, Forest of Equilibrium), it almost feels like we made our second album last in some respects. We actually recorded a lot more material but decided to sacrifice many of the tracks to make the overall album feel more complete in its nihilism. I don't like happy endings, I never have. So many good films are ruined by happy endings and I didn't want that to be the case with Cathedral, it was my dream to bring everything full circle. Says Lee Dorrian.
Clearly there was new impetus for reconnecting with that early spirit of doleful abjection, of sinister obsessions and lamented desires; on 'The Last Spire' Cathedral are literally doomed. We are commiserating the celebration, and in what thrilling style.1. Entrance to Hell
