Bob Dylan was at several crossroads in the mid-1970s. Artistically, he was largely written off as being past his prime. Slow Train ComingSlow Train Coming is the 19th studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. It was the artist's first effort since becoming a born-again Christian, and all of the songs either express his strong personal faith.
The unexpected effect of his conversion to Christianity is that it gave Dylan a focus he hadn't had since Blood on the Tracks. His concentration carries over to the music, which is lean and direct.

Fresh off experiencing a motorcycle accident and the wrath of audiences hostile to his embrace of amplified music, Dylan elected to retreat to the comforts of rural and family life. He soon began collaborating with members of the Band in his house, ultimately moving the sessions to Big Pink. Informal, peaceful, relaxed, open-minded: The collaborations blanket country stomps, roots hootenannies, forgotten spirituals, earthy originals, chaotic marches, dreamscapes, dance tunes, folk laments, catch-as-you-can improvisations. In Invisible Republic, his scintillating book about the sessions, cultural critic Greil Marcus states: At a time when the country was tearing itself apart in a war at home over a war abroad, the music was funny and comforting; it was also strange, and somehow incomplete. Out of some odd displacement of art and time, the music seemed both transparent and inexplicable when it was first heard, and it still does. Indeed, The Basement Tapes appear to emanate from an indefinable chasm between modern and ancient, self-evident and mysterious, shapeless and fully formed, abstract and concrete, histories unwritten and chronicled. But every note chimes with freenessa liberating fun, humble simplicity, and bond-creating camaraderie felt in every hoot, holler, laugh, and false start.

That's part of the lineup on this various-artists sampler of music used in the television series The Sopranos, music that dates from each of the last five decades of the 20th century, from Bo Diddley's 1950s hit ''I'm a Man'' to Eurythmics' ''I've Tried Everything'' from their 1999 reunion album, Peace. Familiar songs like Sinatra's ''It Was a Very Good Year'' are given a new flavor by being sequenced between very different yet oddly complementary songs. Although they would go on to become one of the most commercially successful acts of the 1970s, most observers agree that Blood, Sweat & Tears 1968 debut effort Child Is Father to the Man remains the ambitious ensembles finest and most enduring musical statement. The bands only album under the leadership of legendary singer / keyboardist Al Kooper, Child Is Father to the Man stands with such late-60s art-pop landmarks as the Zombies Odessey and Oracle and Loves Forever Changes in capturing the periods seemingly limitless creative possibilities.
Child Is Father to the Man is a brilliant reflection of the desire of Koopera former member of the seminal Blues Project and a key collaborator in Bob Dylans early electric workto use an expanded instrumental lineup to explore a broader range of sounds, styles and compositional approaches. Towards that end, he launched Blood, Sweat & Tears, recruiting a stellar assortment of players from the worlds of rock and jazz, including ex-Blues Project guitarist Steve Katz, former Buffalo Springfield/Mothers of Invention bassist Jim Fielder, jazz drummer Bobby Colomby and noted jazz horn players Randy Brecker, Dick Halligan, Fred Lipsius and Jerry Weiss.
The resulting album (produced by fabled studio genius John Simon) was a seamlessly eclectic psychedelic-rock-jazz-classical fusion, with such diverse tracks as Koopers gritty compositions I Cant Quit Her and I Love You More Than Youll Ever Know, as well as his playfully arty House in the Country and The Modern Adventures of Plato, Diogenes and Freud, along with stirring readings of Tim Buckleys Morning Glory, Harry Nilssons Without Her and Randy Newmans Just One Smile.
Koopers expansive musical vision may have been a bit too far ahead of its time. Although it was a favorite of early FM album-rock DJs, Child Is Father to the Man barely scraped the Billboard Top 50 and failed to produce a hit single. However, in the years since, the album has been widely recognized for its expressiveness and originality, and embraced by successive generations of listeners. For instance, it received a prominent placement in Rolling Stones 2003 ranking of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Gen X rock buffs can revel in nostalgia with the High Fidelity soundtrack. The film centers on the romantic escapades of record-store owner and ex-club DJ Rob Gordon (John Cusack) and his full-time obsession with music. Since High Fidelity has as much to do with vinyl addiction as it does with the difficulties of love, great care has been taken with its selection of tracks, a solidly eccentric collection of heartache-heavy pop gems ranging from obscure '60s bands and groundbreaking artists like the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan, to Stevie Wonder and Stereolab. As in the film, there's a method to the compilers' elitist rock-geek madness. Even co-star Jack Black's schlocky blue-eyed cover of Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On doesn't seem out of place.
The inspired screeches of acid-fried '60s singer-songwriter Roky Erickson's You're Gonna Miss Me set the pace for the musing, hangdog tone of the album. Besides the joyous licks of the Kinks' Everybody's Gonna Be Happy and Royal Trux's hybrid of hip-hip, techno, and aggressive rock on Inside Game, the bulk of the set is composed of moody folk-rock tunes like Dylan's exquisite Most of the Time and the Velvets' Oh! Sweet Nuthin. Other noteworthy tracks include Love's Always See Your Face, the Beta Band's Dry the Rain, Elvis Costello's wistful Shipbuilding, the stinging irony of Smog's Cold Blooded Old Times, and Stevie Wonder's soulful optimism on I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever). The ever-evasive Bob Dylan never explicitly stated exactly what represented the another side of himself referenced in the title to his second 1964 record. Yet the whimsical moods, hallucinogenic prose, humorous angles, transparent mistakes, and noncommittal themes give a pretty clear idea at what the Bard hinted as he emerged from being labeled as a reluctant generation spokesperson and folk savior after releasing two highly intellectual, socially pioneering sets replete with protest songs. Dylan needed to take a breath, step back from the drama, and reevaluate his surroundings. Another Side of Bob Dylan is all that and more.

Be there as the Minnesota native spends the evening of June 9, 1964 in Columbias Studio A and, displaying an openness hed never before revealed in a formal environment, lays down the songs that compromise his fourth album.
Featuring minimal editing, Another Side of Bob Dylan is naked, truthful, and whimsical. Mobile Fidelitys reissue illuminates the artists conditionhe laughs in the midst of songs, experiences a few false starts, hits a couple of bum notes, occasionally sings as if hes stumbling down a Manhattan sidewalk after having one too many at a smoky pub, prizes rawness over perfectionwith microscopic accuracy. Indeed, Dylans slightly woozy and completely playful state related to his having downed a handful of bottles of Beaujolais during the sessions.
The uninhibited joie de vive is discernable in the rattling piano lines on Black Crow Blues, seemingly subconscious ramble of the hysterical folk rhyming of Motorpsycho Nightmare, bluesy dream sequencing throughout I Dont Believe You, and intentionally out-of-tune yodeling during All I Really Want to Do. On a majority of the prized set, Dylan lets his guard down, but does so in clever manners that speak to his surrealist imagination and biting wit. He possesses the rare ability to make planned strategies appear spontaneous, to challenge audiences with stinting wordplay and minimalist melodies that provide a deceptive false security.
And so the apparently autobiographical and self-aware My Back Pages, one of the earliest examples of Dylans immersion into symbolist prose and abstract metaphor, remains controversial for its on-the-surface denouncement of his earlier condemnations of social institutions and injustices. Peeled back, the tune is a brilliant releasean essential escape hatch for Dylan to both relieve himself of unneeded pressures and distance himself from pundits. As an indelible piece of art, it succeeds in masquerading obvious meaning while simultaneously forcing listeners to question their own actions. Quintessential Dylan.
As is the trifecta of relationship-themed compositions that closes the record, as well as the eternal Chimes of Freedom, the standard that journalist Paul Williams dubbed Dylans Sermon on the Mount. Its inseparable conjunction of apocalyptic imagery, personal emotion, allusive lyricism, balladic alliteration, and inclusive sympathy signaled that, having already eviscerated the rules associated with pop and folk music, Dylan had just begun his assault on our consciousness, making Another Side of Bob Dylan that much more mysterious, unequivocal, and requisite.

Known in his youth as the angry young man, Elvis Costello waited until 1986 to create the most vicious record of his career. Stripped to the studs and produced by Nick Lowe, Blood and Chocolate seethes with vindictiveness, spite, and rancor. The 11-track effort clatters with raw rock n' roll menace and clangs with darkly humorous intent. Venomous, acerbic, and aggressive, it values rhythm and attack over harmony and melody. A volatile rite of passage on which harsh Telecaster riffs cut like razor blades and Costello spits words as if they were Molotov cocktails tossed at enemies, this is the satisfying sound of emotional catharsis.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, this collectable edition of Blood and Chocolate joins Mobile Fidelity's acclaimed Costello reissues series in presenting the icon's vital records in rich, dynamic, three-dimensional analog sound. That's never been truer than it is here. Costello and Co. recorded the songs in a large room at London's Olympic Studios while playing at stage volumes, an unconventional approach that nonetheless suited the music's raw feel. Nearly every track was done in three takes or less, with minimal vocal fixes and overdubs added immediately afterward. Such energy, spark, force, and pace thrive on this reissue.
Capturing the decibel-laden atmosphere that heightens the rhythmic pace and elevates the urgency of the deliveries, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP delivers the band's performances with wall-of-sound hugeness and booming authority. And while this isn't a record where subtlety reigns, listeners can now discern the acoustic guitar strummed by Lowe for the foundation of the savage Uncomplicated as well as the nuanced final bars of the inimitable I Want You on which each member's instrumental track is switched off to bleed into Costello's vocal microphone. Indeed, for all the apparent chaos, Steve Nieve's keyboards even get accurate placement and imaging on this incredible pressing. Then there's the temperament of the songs themselves-perhaps best described by Costello.
The album title and Eamon Singer's crude cover painting reflected some intense and uncertain situations. The record might have well been a blurred polaroid: a smashed-up room, a squashed box of chocolates, some broken glass and a little blood smeared on the wall, wrote the singer in 2002. The album [is] a pissed-off 32-year-old divorce's version of the musical blueprint with which I had begun my recording career with the Attractions. Indeed, the band-on the verge of fraying at the seams and at each other's throats in close confines-pummels twanging chords, beats up on notes, turns up amplifiers, and eyes everything with great suspicion.
Lyrically, Costello has seldom been wittier, sharper, or more malicious. The snarling, tables-turning I Hope You're Happy Now joins Bob Dylan's Positively Fourth Street as among the most lacerating kiss-off tunes ever penned. Similarly sarcastic, Next Time Round lends a pop rave-up air to the album's otherwise dark assault. The bloodletting Crimes of Paris and Poor Napoleon (featuring Pogues singer Cait O'Riordan playing the role of the voice of pity) confront the consequences of traumatic relationships and lustful choices with a savvy intellect. Given the mood and mindset of everyone and everything involved, it's no surprise that Costello and the Attractions wouldn't again work together until eight years later. Saying that Blood and Chocolate was worth the sacrifice is an understatement.

The soundtrack album includes classics from the 1960s and 1970s, such as Bob Dylan's "Shelter From The Storm" from the 1975 album Blood On The Tracks. Tweedy provides two songs: the funky "Everybody Hides" and the laid-back "Why, Why, Why". In between comes a contrasting classic, the straight-hitting vocals of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody To Love".
