This fourth album from the New York's Blues Traveler finally brought their harmonica-based blues riffs into the public eye. Indeed, Run-Around spent nearly a year on the Billboard singles chart. Harpman/vocalist John Popper moves easily between uptempo, rock-based tracks like Stand and Crash Burn. The hidden gem here, however, is the love-struck ballad Just Wait. Often categorized with post-Dead jam acts such as Phish, BT isn't immune from performance excesses. But when it comes to recording, they keep it (mostly) concise and always interesting. If you've heard the name and want to know what all the hoopla is about, Four is a great starting point. --Alexandra Russell

Blues Traveler are a hippie blues'n'boogie band in the mode of Canned Heat and Savoy Brown. Led by John Popper, a rotund singer and harmonica player, the New Jersey quartet captured the open-ended jam mentality of its live shows on its first two studio albums. On their third album, Save His Soul, Blues Traveler tightens up their arrangements and puts more emphasis on songwriting and premeditated parts. While this cuts down on the meandering solos and monotonous rhythm patterns, it forces attention on the hackneyed aphorisms and melody-starved chord changes that pass for the band's songwriting. On the other hand, they have improved noticeably as players, and bassist Bobby Sheehan shines in particular on the fast and tricky syncopations. --Geoffrey Himes

I have my moments, John Popper declares, and many of them -- as harmonica player, singer, and lyricist -- are here, on an album that finds Blues Traveler stretching out much as they do on-stage. Popper is a man with a lot on his mind, but when he reaches The Best Part, his verbosity approaches a Walt Whitman-like exuberance, and guitarist Chan Kinchla is right with him, contributing sweet fills here, Pete Townshend-style strumming there. And as for the rhythm work of bassist Bobby Sheehan and drummer Brendan Hill, as Popper says, It's all in the groove.

    Mouth Harp Blues

Shakey Jake - Mouth Harp Blues The late James Harris earned the moniker Shakey Jake due to his proficiency at dice, but he was equally adept at the blues game. The Arkansas-born, Chicago-based singer and harmonica blower traveled to Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio in November 1960 to record this, his second album for the Bluesville label. Jake brought along Jimmie Lee Robinson, the brilliant, fast-fingered guitarist best known for his work with Little Walter's band. Also making tasty contributions to the session was Robert Banks, the New York R&B and gospel studio organist who, in this case, ably appointed himself as a two-fisted blues piano stylist. Among the 10 selections is the distinctively loping Easy Baby, a tune also associated with Jake's nephew Magic Sam.

Guitarist Jimmie Lee Robinson, who died in 2002, was the soul of Acoustic Sounds' own APO Records. He was the first to record at Blue Heaven Studios, having made three records (one still unreleased) in the converted church, and he was there several more times to perform. A Chicago native and lifelong resident, Robinson began playing guitar in the open-air market on Maxwell Street in 1942 with the likes of Big Bill Broonzy and Robert Nighthawk. He later teamed with Freddie King for a four-year partnership and went on to play guitar and bass with Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Eddie Taylor, Elmore James, Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Reed, Magic Sam and of course Shakey Jake.

    Traveling South

For a musical style that has historically placed so much weight on lineage, the passing of more and more of the old masters poses a dire question: What is the future of the blues and who will lead the charge? Well, for blues fans in the Northeast United States, that question is routinely answered every night Mikey Junior hits the stage. His infectious personality and absolute command of his medium leave little doubt the blues is in good hands. Self-taught from his impressive collection of blues vinyl, Mikey was a full time musician before he even graduated high-school. By the time he was in his early twenties, seasoned players were taking notice and it wasn't long before one blues society after another scrambled to get him to their stage. Before long, Mikey was a staple of the summer blues circuit on the East Coast. So it came as no surprise that his newest release found its way into the eclectic and youthful roster of the Vizztone Label Group. Traveling South reveals a young blues artist at the top of his game, telling stories we can all relate to, while drawing us deep into the roots of blues music via his utter mastery of the diatonic and chromatic harmonicas. Produced by Dave Gross, this album has a level of depth, maturity, restraint and musicality that reaches the soul through his impassioned vocals, bringing a whole new dimension to his already impressive catalog. Well-written originals and choice covers are brought to life with a vision that truly separates Mikey from his contemporaries.

    Inarticulate Speech Of The Heart

Inarticulate Speech of the Heart is the fourteenth studio album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison - Originally released in 1983

Morrison said he arrived at the title from a Shavian saying: that idea of communicating with as little articulation as possible, at the same time being emotionally articulate.

One of music's true originals Van Morrison's unique and inspirational musical legacy is rooted in postwar Belfast. Born in 1945 Van heard his Shipyard worker father's collection of blues, country and gospel early in life.Feeding off musical greats such as Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Muddy Waters, Mahalia Jackson and Leadbelly he was a travelling musician at 13 and singing, playing guitar and sax, in several bands, before forming Them in 1964.Making their name at Belfast's Maritime Club Them soon established Van as a major force in the British R&B scene. Morrison's matchless vocal and songwriting talents produced instant classics such as the much covered 'Gloria' and 'Here Comes The Night'.Those talents found full astonishing range in Van's solo career. After working with Them's New York producer Bert Berns on beautiful Top 40 pop hit 'Brown Eyed Girl' (1967), Morrison moved to another realm.

With one of the most revered catalogues in music history and his unparalleled talents as composer, singer and performer Morrison's past achievements loom large. But, as throughout his extraordinary career, how that past informs his future achievements and still stirs excitement and keen anticipation.

    Have Guitar Will Travel

Mastered From The Original Chess Mono Master Reels

Good Lord. Bo Diddley came out with all guns blazing on his floor-rattling romp from 1960, Have Guitar Will Travel. The LP would become a blueprint for SO much great rock 'n' roll that followed: the Stones covered "Mona" in 1965, the Masters Apprentices walloped "Dancing Girl," the Downliners Sect blasted through "Nursery Rhyme," and "Cops and Robbers" even named one of the baddest mid-'60s UK R&B combos ever! Really... Who in the hell wouldn't be inspired by hearing this opus that followed on the heels of Bo's devastating first two albums??? Have Guitar Will Travel was packed with the same badass guitar, bolder-than-bold vocals, and trademark Diddley beat that had already made Bo a stone legend and man-among-men. Kicking off with the gospel-shouter "She's Alright," (with the background singers answering Bo's every word), we stomp through the trash-talking "Say Man, Back Again," Bo's run-through-the-jungle "Run Diddley Daddy," the amorous "I Love You So," we hear hot, distorted licks traded with Lady Bo on the monstrous "Mumblin' Guitar," and SO MUCH MORE.... The album also dipped into the vaults for the killer Diddley beater "Dancing Girl," the exotic instro "Spanish Guitar," and the mind-blowing "Mona" (titled "I Need You Baby" for this LP).

This killer 180-gram edition - from the magnificent original Chess mono master reels - finally puts this album back in print on vinyl, properly. Accept no damn imitations.

    Have Guitar, Will Travel

More than one British Invasion band learned what they needed to know about American rock & roll from the songs on this record (the Stones cut Cops and Robbers at their earliest recording session, and later released a killer version of Mona, though the most interesting British version of the latter was done by an all-girl band with an attitude called the Liverbirds). This record is every bit as raunchy as Diddley's first two albums (the guitars may even be crunchier, and the singing shows more range), and has more than enough to recommend it to collectors and fans. This is the album that began the funny cover photos on Diddley's records.

    Angola Prisoners' Blues

In 1959, a young folklorist and musicologist, Harry Oster, traveled to the State Prison in
Angola, Louisiana to collect folksongs. He made a number of field recordings while at the
prison, but his biggest discovery was undoubtedly the Louisiana Blues Hall of Famer, Robert
Pete Williams, a truly gifted musician and blues writer, who was serving a life sentence. Of
the 9 songs on this album, four are by Williams, who sings heart-wrenchingly about prison
life and being down and out. Thanks to Oster, Williams was eventually released from prison,
and was able to have a fairly successful career as a bluesman in the 60s and 70s, appearing
at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival and touring the US and Europe. The other musicians
featured here, fellow inmates Robert Guitar Welch and Matthew Hogman Maxey, are both
extremely gifted musicians, but in the words of Dr. Oster (who would go on to write the
Penguin Guide to American Folklore in 2000), they are primarily the heirs of a clearly
defined and standardized blues tradition, rather than innovators. In any case, this is acoustic
prison blues at its finest, and includes such detailed liner notes as well as an annotated track
listing that it is equal parts musical and historical document.

Blue Hour is the first release by The Drift since the passing of their indelible trumpet player, Jeff Jacobs, but his spirit is undeniably present throughout the album. Without a doubt their most meditative release since their Travels In Constants debut, Blue Hour eases off the jazz and dub influences that had become a trademark of The Drift's sound, and instead focuses on hypnotic repetition and subtle, textural layering of guitars, keyboards, electric bass and drums.

Rough Guide To The Blues Songsters

Before there was the bluesman there was the songster and it was these traveling troubadours who helped lay the foundations for the development of the blues. In the decades preceding the phonograph and radio and before the American national entertainment industry had reached into the deepest parts of the South, it was these wandering musicians who provided the musical entertainment for all manner of social events.

In order to be able to scrape a living together, the songster had to be incredibly versatile and come up with something for everyone. Armed with a banjo or guitar they performed every form of popular music of the day from folk songs and ballads to rags and spirituals. Priding themselves on their huge repertoires, they could be described as the human jukeboxes of their time.

Along with the many musicians shrouded in mystery, this collection boasts tracks by legendary bluesmen such as Leadbelly, Charley Patton, and Mississippi John Hurt. Aside from the blues, these great performers would have been able to play everything asked of them at local bars and rural dances, and it is said that Leadbelly could draw on a repertoire of over 500 songs from many different genres. Likewise, the 'Father of the Delta Blues', Charley Patton left glimpses into his songster roots and true musical versatility with songs such as the featured 'Mississippi Boweavil Blues'. Henry Thomas's projected birthdate of 1874 predates that of Charley Patton by a good 17 years and gives us an idea of what rural black music sounded like before the turn of the twentieth century. He was 53 years old during his first recording session in 1927 by which point much of his music was already a representation of a bygone era. The same could be said of Richard 'Rabbit' Brown from New Orleans who worked as a ferryman on lake Pontchartrain and whose recorded legacy of just five songs includes 'James Alley Blues' which has been covered by Bob Dylan. Also from New Orleans, Papa Charlie Jackson accompanied himself with a banjo guitar and became one of the first songsters to record from the mid-1920s. His unique brand of hokum, used comic, often sexually suggestive lyrics and lively, danceable rhythms.

This selection features several variations on traditional ballads about legendary characters such as Frankie and Johnny, Stagger Lee, John Henry and Railroad Bill. These became standards in the repertoires of songsters, both black and white, who shared a similar colour-blindness when it came to the racial origins of a tune. Frank Hutchison and Dick Justice were both white performers whose styles were heavily influenced by black musicians, in particular, Luke Jordan whose featured track 'Pick Poor Robin Clean' is a gambling song masterpiece. Like Jordan, many other well-known East Coast songsters such as Blind Blake, Pink Anderson, and Peg Leg Howell worked with traveling shows, which became a major factor in the spreading of the blues. Many of these shows were operated by vendors of patent medicines who would attract crowds by putting on a performance.

As these shows began to disappear and recorded music and dancing in juke joints became popular, so the older songster style became less fashionable. Apart from the few waxed recordings which leave a tempting glance into a world before the blues, many of the featured artists faded into obscurity, as the songsters were overtaken by blues singers whose music was heavily promoted by record companies. Those songsters who were able to embrace this new music such as Charley Patton and Leadbelly became seminal figures and the rest is history.

    Just Like You

Available On Vinyl For The First Time

Featuring Bonnie Raitt & Jackson Browne

Just Like You is the third album by three-time American Grammy Award-winning blues musician Keb' Mo' (born Kevin Moore). Keb'Mo' has been described as a living link to the seminal Delta blues that travelled up the Mississippi River and across the expanse of America. His post-modern Blues style is influenced by many eras and genres, including Folk, Rock, Jazz and Pop.

Originally released in 1996, the album features guest artists Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt, both on the title track Just Like You. Unlike the first album, Just Like You features a more Blues-Pop to Blues Rock feel and more of its tracks feature a full band. The album was produced by John Porter (Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Taj Mahal, a.o.).

In 1997, Just Like You won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. This is the first ever vinyl issue of this classic album!

    Remember Me

Jimmie Lee Robinson doesn't dance for the approval of others nor does he thin his music to seduce a wider audience. The self-proclaimed Lonely Traveller's work is an artistic achievement that illustrates why enduring reputations are earned slowly, over time, not swiftly via shrewdly orchestrated media blitzes. His music, honest and unspoiled, comes as a welcome and refreshing alternative in an age of crowd-mesmerizing pyrotechnics, outlandish tempos, and incendiary solos. Remember Me, Robinson's first effort for the APO label and the first album recorded at Blue Heaven Studios, is an adventure deep into the blues of Mr. Robinson's Maxwell Street neighborhood, a neighborhood that has included residencies with musicians such as Little Walter, Howlin Wolf, Freddie King, Elmore James, Luther Tucker, Eddie Taylor, Magic Sam, Jimmy Reed, Shakey Jake, St. Louis Jimmy, Eddy Clearwater, Sunnyland Slim and more.

On Remember Me, Robinson accompanies himself on acoustic guitar to create The Lonely Traveller's distinctive brand of blues, which he says represents a lifetime of work, the trials and tribulations of growing up on and experiencing Maxwell Street. If you listen closely, you'll also hear Jimmy D. Lane (son of the late blues legend Jimmy Rogers) accompanying on one tune.

Robinson sings in the powerful and sometimes piercing voice that inspired the Lonesome Lee sobriquet when he began recording for Bandera Records in the 1950s. Boot-stomping, spur-jangling highlights include a rousing performance of Wait For Me, Jimmy Reed-inspired Boss Man and a spirited rendition of Wagon Wheels.

A Meal You Can Shake Hands With In The Dark (Pure Pleasure)

Pete Brown was a Londoner and a veteran of the underground scene. Born in 1940, he first came to prominence as a poet. He was just 14 when his first poem appeared in Evergreen Revue in the US. Then in the early sixties he worked alongside another British poet Mike Horowitz. His direct involvement with rock music came when he was asked to form a songwriting partnership with Jack Bruce to write lyrics for Cream and the partnership proceeded to produce the lyrics for many of their finest songs: Wrapping Paper, I Feel Free, Sunshine Of Your Love and White Room. After the demise of Cream, Brown continued to write with Bruce but also began his own recording career with The Battered Ornaments who included Chris Spedding. After an initial 45, which with its wailing saxes and effective vocals was underrated, the band recorded this album which was a mixture of jazz-rock and blues. Dark Lady, The Old Man and Station Song were among the fine tracks and the latter later got a further airing on the Before Singing Lessons compilation. Station Song and Dark Lady had earlier featured along with Travelling Blues on the ultra-rare promo-only Harvest Sampler in 1969.

Brown then suffered the humiliation of being thrown out of the band the night before they had a Hyde Park gig with The Rolling Stones. Brown's response was to form a new band, Piblokto!

This release breaks the long sides down to four sides of vinyl which enhances the sound quality considerably. Also of interest is that it has been mastered in the same studio at Abbey Road as was the initial release and from the same original analogue tape masters.

    • Pete Brown (vocal, trumpet)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc

Nikki Sudden's collaboration with former Birthday
Party guitarist Rowland S. Howard peaked with Kiss You
Kidnapped Charabanc, the duo's 1987 first and only full
length. Howard's sinister guitar flourishes and malevolent
lyrical motifs lead Sudden's paisley-clad disposition into
murkier waters, drudging the same sludge inhabited by
The Gun Club and Nick Cave's Bad Seeds. Unhinged slide
guitars, noise and primal drumming draw up demented
pacts forged in the blood of Southern Gothic swamp
stomp and Depression-era devotionals-tales of lovers and
demons split between the vocal transmissions of the two
minds behind this goth-steeped, blues-punk essential.

In founding Swell Maps, the post-punk prefacing
Birmingham art-snots, Nikki Sudden and his drumming
brother Epic Soundtracks charted new territory for racket
and corrosive guitar. But after folding Swell Maps at the
dawn of the '80s, Nikki Sudden plowed through another
decade's worth of terrifically fertile ground. Drawing on
his devotion to the Rolling Stones and T. Rex-alongside
guitarist Dave Kusworth as Jacobites, plus a cheekily named
cohort of British sidemen-Nikki Sudden cut a string of
raw, inspired rock 'n' roll records, etched with double-edged travel melancholia and hard-bitten punk dejection.
