    Lee Morgan, Volume 3

On trumpeter Lee Morgan's third album for Blue Note, recorded on 24 March 1957, Morgan's sextet-comprised of Gigi Gryce on alto and flute, Benny Golson on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Charlie Persip on drums-showcases five compositions by sideman Benny Golson. The numbers include the fascinating "Hassan's Dream" as well as "I Remember Clifford", a tribute to the late trumpet player Clifford Brown. Tragically Morgan (a trumpet player like Brown) himself would also meet with an untimely demise, but in 1957, the nineteen year old Philadelphia native was one of the leading trumpeters on the New York jazz scene and remained so until his death at age 33. One of Morgan's most legendary performances, on John Coltrane's celebrated Blue Train album, would be recorded just a few months after this date.

Oscar Peterson has thoroughly assimilated not just every piano style that preceded him but every ensemble idiom as well: swinging big bands, gospel, European classical, and, of course, the blues. Having mastered all of this, Peterson found the standard piano trio the perfect vehicle for exploring all of these types of music. In this classic LP, the crowning achievement in his greatest year, Peterson doesn't just explore these styles, he conquers them.

    New Moon Daughter

Reissued As Part Of The Blue Note 75th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Campaign

Singer Cassandra Wilson, who has had a rather diverse career that has ranged from the free funk of M-Base to standards à la Betty Carter, has in recent times adopted a folk-oriented style a little reminiscent of Nina Simone. On New Moon Daughter her repertoire ranges from U2 to Son House, from Hoagy Carmichael to Hank Williams (I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry); it is certainly the only album ever that contains both the Monkees' Last Train to Clarksville and Strange Fruit.

Originally released in 1994, the Jimi Hendrix Blues album features 11 blues performances recorded by Jimi between 1966 and 1970 showcasing the guitarist's mastery of the 12-bar form. This double-LP audiophile edition of Blues is arguably the best packaged, richest sounding, most coherent post-mortem release from the Hendrix archives.

Framed by his 1967 acoustic 12-string rendition of "Hear My Train 'A Comin'" and a 1970 Trio performance of the same song, these 11 rough and ready tracks illustrate Hendrix's deep spiritual connections to his blues roots and his daring experimental take on the shape of future blues to come. And they've never sounded so vital, necessary or dynamic!

This 2LP version will forever stand as the definitive-sounding, high-performance edition of this historic collection.

    Julia With Blue Jeans On

Since January 2010, Spencer Krug has used Moonface as a venue for home-recorded instrumental and
conceptual experimentation, expanding the ideas he developed collaboratively with Wolf Parade, Sunset
Rubdown, and Frog Eyes. Releases under this moniker have come quickly, each distinct from the other. The
Dreamland EP and Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped were conceptual excursions merging
instrumental and thematic fixations. After moving from Montreal to Helsinki, Krug teamed up with the
Finnish band Siinai to create a lush rock record-2012's Heartbreaking Bravery-driven by the dark despair
of a breakup. Staying in Helsinki, Krug set off on yet another creative departure, driven by a rediscovery of
love and a reconsideration of the Moonface persona he'd created for himself. The quietly stunning Julia with
Blue Jeans On is the fourth Moonface release, bringing a degree of intimacy and self-reflection unlike
anything Krug has produced to date.

There are only two sonic elements on Julia: Spencer Krug's voice and his piano. Richly recorded, they interact
seamlessly with one another. On the opening track "Barbarian," the piano unfolds with the hypnotic energy
of Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert, Krug's right hand doubling his vocal melody. On the closing track "Your
Chariot Awaits," Krug's voice recedes after a minute as the piano swells for an extended showcase with
modern classical undertones. After nearly a decade, across a number of guises, we are well-acquainted with
Krug's inimitable town-crier vocals; on Julia, we are introduced to a facet of his musical skill that feels
conservatory-trained. This is Krug as singer-songwriter, moving beyond star poses to a vision that is at once
    more elegant and comfortable.

Or, in Krug's own language, on "Barbarian II": "I have chewed through my beautiful narrative." Much of Julia
is taken with this chewing. "Love the House You're In" opens by masquerading as self-pity, with a statement
that reads like a press release from someone who's given up. "I regretfully withdraw my offer to try and
improve myself," Krug gently sings, establishing a self-reflexive foundation upon which he builds the album's
most universal, humanistic sentiment, and which he delivers via its most soaring melody.

Purposeful self-evaluation is one tactic for reinvention, but as Krug illustrates on Julia's title track, everyday
occurrences can prove transformative as well. The sight of a woman, clad in denim, briefly visible at the
bottom of a staircase, he learns, is capable of "obliterating everything I've ever written down." "Julia" is an ode
in the classical sense, pivoting around the beauty inherent in the most simple, taken-for-granted sights. Krug
acknowledges this, opening the song by admitting that "it's a madman's game, making the commonplace
unreal." What he leaves out in this admission, however, is the key to the countless charms of Julia with Blue
Jeans On: by expertly playing this ridiculous game, he can erase the madness that spawned it.

    Blues of Desperation

GRAMMY-nominated blues-rock guitar icon Joe Bonamassa announces his 20160solo album, Blues of Desperation (J&R Adventures). Like his previous solo disc, 2014's Top 10 Billboard hit Different Shades of Blue, this record features all-original material, and it sees the maverick superstar guitarist, singer and songwriter tossing away the rule book as he continues to reinvent and redefine the blues-rock genre like no other artist working today.

I want people to hear my evolution as a blues-rock musician, says Bonamassa, somebody who isn't resting on accomplishments and who is always pushing forward and thinking about how music can evolve and stay relevant.

The writing sessions for Blues of Desperation took Bonamassa back to Nashville, where he'd composed Different Shades of Blue, to work with some of Music City's top tunesmiths, people like James House, Tom Hambridge, Jeffrey Steele, Jerry Flowers and Gary Nicholson.

These are some of the best guys in the business, Bonamassa raves. Lyrically, you'll hear the proverbial trains, mountains, valleys and other blues references about heartbreak and loneliness but there are also some poignant moments about getting away from the stressful, crazy demands of life and losing yourself with your special someone. I think anybody will be able to relate.

Bonamassa and his longtime producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Journey) convened at Nashville's Grand Victor Sound Studios (formerly known as RCA Studio A), and during an intense, five-day period they recorded 11 galvanizing songs with a crack group of musicians including drummers Anton Fig and Greg Morrow, bassist Michael Rhodes, keyboardist Reese Wynans, horn players Lee Thornburg, Paulie Cerra and Mark Douthit, and background singers Mahalia Barnes, Jade McRae and Juanita Tippins.

Of his decade-long collaboration with Shirley, Bonamassa says, I can explain our relationship with one word - 'trust.' I completely trust in Kevin and his musical promptings. He pushes my musical ability by challenging me to not just rest on my laurels or settle for 'good.' He expects more out of the other musicians as well and will not hold back when he sees us falling back into our usual routine.

Which sometimes calls for unorthodox measures, says Shirley, who admits that his idea of augmenting Bonamassa's usual recording band with second drummer Morrow was engineered to ruffle Joe's feathers.

I wanted him to work a little harder, like in his early years, he says, so I brought in an additional drummer, just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons. Of the results, Shirley raves, Recording 'Blues of Desperation' is one of the most exciting recording projects I've done. What a joyful noise we made!

Blues of Desperation is Bonamassa's most powerfully diverse and boldly realized album yet, with the material ranging from the gutsy, gritty blues call to arms of This Train (Joe's guitar is set to rude throughout) to the elegant yet emotionally shattering ballad What I've Known for a Very Long Time to the soul-nourishing, acoustic-based Americana of The Valley Runs Low, on which Bonamassa's voice rises up majestically to meet Barnes, McRae and Tippins in gospel-like rapture. And then there's the bleary, tequila-soaked Drive, dripping with the kind of raw, wicked and unsettling sensuality that could make David Lynch green with envy.

Throughout the record, Bonamassa's epic guitar playing conjures up stirring benedictions and explosive exorcisms of sound. No Good Place For the Lonely features some of the guitarist's most cauterizing licks yet, and the walloping title track is a white-knuckled, six-string thrill ride guaranteed to jolt the senses. Guitar fans everywhere (like those who recently voted Bonamassa Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar World magazine by an overwhelming margin) will consider Blues of Desperation a treasure trove of axe riches.

There are some long solos on this record and even some mini-jams in the middle of a track where the band would just jive and crank it out, he says. [During those jams], we do a tip of the hat to Beck and Clapton from the '70s. I think guitar nerds and music fans like myself will love it.

Packed with unparalleled musicianship and teeming with the most enthralling collection of songs in Bonamassa's career, Blues of Desperation is guaranteed to knock out critics and fans alike. By exceeding his own vertiginously high artistic goals, Bonamassa is bound to shatter all other expectations with this record and reach new audiences - no mean feat when you continue his astonishing track record of hits now includes 15 #1 Billboard Blues Albums (more than any other artist in history). 2014's Different Shades of Blue debuted at #8 on Billboard's Top 200 Chart, making it his highest charting album, his first top 10 and accounting for his biggest sales week ever. In 2014, the guitarist received his first-ever Grammy nomination (for Best Blues Album) for the album Seesaw, his second collaboration with blues singing star Beth Hart, and was named 2014's Billboard Blues Artist of the Year.

El Is A Sound Of Joy/Black Sky and Blue Moon (Awaiting Repress)

Shining sounds from the dawn of the Sun Ra Arkestra. El is A Sound of Joy was recorded in 1956 and appeared the following year on the very first Saturn LP, Super-Sonic Jazz. Incredible is the fact that saxophonist Charles Davis, here providing the soulful baritone anchor line (counterpoint to Ra's formidable left hand), remains in the front-line of today's Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen. Shuffle swing breakdown jets leisurely, casually, masterfully, painting lush, post-modern impressions of ancient future worlds, of space, of time of Chicago's elevated trains Reaching for the sky, for Joy . The "Joy" coda dovetails magically into the intro theme of Black Sky And Blue Moon, before downshifting into another dimension of romantic outrospection.

We follow The Nu Sounds, aka Cosmic Rays, on a faraway journey to the land of late-50s Chicago singing groups, the Arkestra supporting with quiet grace, pulsing in Nubians of Plutonia mode. An uncanny blend of antique blackness and bright satellites, ethereal voices perfectly in tune; thanks to Ra's disciplined coaching (plus Modern Harmonic's expert re-mastering), their sweet dynamics and exact harmonics are crystal clear. Flute solo from Marshall Allen. Hearts swelling like the full moon, ripening in the darkness to the point of bursting.

    Projections (Mono)

The Blues Project was one of the most innovative and influential bands of the 1960s. Rising from the vibrant Greenwich Village music scene, the New York quintet created a visionary fusion of electric blues, folk-rock, jazz and psychedelia, and delivered it with gritty, effortless expertise. Although the Blues Project didn't stay together long enough to cash in on the musical innovations that they pioneered, they served as an inspiration for subsequent generations of roots-conscious rockers, and the band's small but seminal body of work remains beloved by'60s rock enthusiasts.

1966's Projections is generally regarded as the Blues Project's peak as a recording unit. The only studio album to feature the band's classic lineup of keyboardist Al Kooper, guitarists Danny Kalb and Steve Katz, bassist Andy Kulberg and drummer Roy Blumenfield, Projections is a potent manifestation of the Blues Project's electic approach and a persuasive showcase for the band members' varied talents.

At the time of its release, Projections became a fixture on the emerging underground FM album rock radio format, and such enduring tracks as the garagey Kooper-sung rocker Wake Me, Shake Me, Kalb's epic blues showcase Two Trains Running, Katz's resonant take on Bob Lind's folk-rock standard Cheryl's Going Home and the spacey instrumental Flute Thing, featuring bassist Kulberg on the title instrument.

Sundazed's new vinyl edition of this seminal LP features Projections' rare and unique original mono mix, along with complete original cover art, and is pressed on high-definition vinyl for optimum sound quality.

    Moanin'

On their second album, The Hive Dwellers make with a low, wailing expression of sorrow (or suffering). Moanin' is a collection of field recordings made at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, Washington. It's a noisy pop runaway freight train that stirs the blues soul rockin' of their debut album Hewn from the Wilderness to a new beat music recipe. The Hive Dwellers' Calvin, Gabriel and Evan have toured across the United States and left a wake of frug and shimmy shines that won't be forgotten any time soon. You beat the tambourine to "Streets of Olympia Town" in Knoxville; stomped the floorboards to "Montgomery Hammer" in Buffalo; knocked a heady bongo to "Baby Be Mine" in Oakland.

    Works Volume 2

Remastered For The First Time In 24 Bit / High-Density Formats From The Original Tapes

Works Volume 2 is ELP's sixth studio album, released in 1977, and now expertly remastered for the first time in 24 bit / High-Density formats from the original tapes. The album's brief, eclectic compositions cover an array of musical styles, combining stimulating originals and handsomely orchestrated renditions of 'Maple Leaf Rag,' 'Honky Tonk Train Blues,' and 'Show Me The Way to Go Home.' Works 2 showcases incredibly strong performances from all 3 band members - Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer. The album includes the massive hit 'I Believe in Father Christmas', Greg Lake's beautiful composition, highlighting his strong voice and vibrant acoustic guitar.

Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer were torchbearers of the progressive rock sound and one of rock's first supergroups. The world-conquering, stadium-filling prog giants helped to broaden the audience for the genre from hundreds of thousands into tens of millions and were one the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970s. Their first 7 album releases all made the U.K. albums chart top 10 and U.S. top 20.

    The First Born Is Dead

The blues had long been a potent undercurrent in the Birthday Party's music, so it wasn't all that surprising that Nick Cave embraced the sound and feeling of rural blues on his second album with the Bad Seeds, The Firstborn Is Dead. What was startling was how well Cave and his bandmates -- Barry Adamson, Mick Harvey, and Blixa Bargeld -- were able to absorb and honor the influences of artists like Skip James and Charley Patton while creating a sound that was unmistakably their own. The moody obsessions of rural blues -- trains, floods, imprisonment, sin, fear, and death -- seemed made to order for Cave, and he was able to tap into the doomy iconography of this music with potent emotional force; on Tupelo, he makes a sweeping and disturbing epic of the rain-swept night when Elvis Presley was born, and Knocking on Joe is a tale of life on the work gang that communicates the pain of the spirit as clearly as the ache of the body. Also, the blues helped transform Cave's music as well as his lyrics; the brutal sonic pummel of the Birthday Party here gave way to a more subtle and dynamic approach that still made effective use of dissonance and bare-wired electric guitar noise while proving the balance of loud and soft only made each side deeper and more resonant. (The stark, barely there guitar and drums of Blind Lemon Jefferson are as startling and malignantly fascinating as anything in the Birthday Party's catalog.) The Firstborn Is Dead proved Nick Cave's musical palate was significantly broader than his debut album suggested and pointed to a path (channeling the sounds and emotions of American roots music) he would return to on many of his albums that followed.
