    Blue Oyster Cult

Blue Öyster Cult is the eponymous debut album by the American hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released in 1972. The album features songs such as Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll, Stairway to the Stars, and Then Came the Last Days of May, all of which the band still plays regularly during its concerts.

The band toured with artists such as The Byrds, Alice Cooper and the Mahavishnu Orchestra to support the album, which received a positive reaction from critics. The Village Voice called it the tightest and most musical hard rock record since - dare I say it - Who's Next.

    Agents of Fortune

'I've got a fever, and the only medicine is MORE COWBELL ' Decades before Christopher Walken and Will Ferrell's hilarious ode to "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" on Saturday Night Live, Agents Of Fortune already obtained classic Rock status.

The hit song is just one of the wonderful tunes on Blue Öyster Cult's fifth album from 1976. The band called in the help of Patti Smith on "The Revenge Of Vera Gemini", and delivered a high charting album (#29 on the Billboard 200 and "The Reaper" made it to the twelfth spot on the singles Charts).

Recorded During The "Fire Of Unknown Origin" Tour In New York - 1981

Blue Öyster Cult began in 1967 as Soft White Underbelly with Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser on guitars, Allen Lanier on keyboards and Albert Bouchard on drums. Adding lead singer and guitarist Eric Bloom led to the name change of Oaxaca, then later the Stalk-Forrest Group, which issued one single. Joe Bouchard was added on bass and the group was signed to Columbia Records in 1971. Their first two albums, "Blue Oyster Cult" and 'Tyranny and Mutation", garnered some interest from rock critics, but it was third LP, "Secret Treaties," which first broke them in to the top 100 LP charts. "Spectres" was released in 1975 and featured "Godzilla," a concert favorite. In 1981 BOC was back on top with their "Fire Of Unknown Origin" album and a new top 40 hit in "Burnin' For You." "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" was featured in the movie "Heavy Metal."

This LP was recorded during the "Fire Of Unknown Origin" tour in New York, in 1981. This would be the last tour with Albert Bouchard who was replaced in late 1981. Here's a chance to listen to BOC at their very best during their peak of popularity.

It was produced by Jack Douglas (whose other credits include The Who, Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, John Lennon, James Gang and Mountain). Secret Treaties (Speakers Corner)

Back in the days of hard rock and surrounded by fierce competitors with such great names as the Doors, Black Sabbath and the Rolling Stones, a band had to attract attention with far more than histrionic pathos, biker boogie, an adept lead guitarist and a sharp-tongued singer. The band Blue Öyster Cult, founded on Long Island in 1971, possessed all this and much more, relating short scenarios in their lyrics, which conjured up people's imagination. Rolling Stone magazine enthused that it was »like listenin' to Hitchcock and Kubrick swap stories about their wet dreams«, and that the group »mix aesthetics and ass-kicking rock to such good advantage«.

In their third studio album Secret Treaties, BÖC reached the pinnacle of their musical evolution with such memorable songs as Career Of Evil, Subhuman and Astronomy. The lyrics have literary value but are certainly not intended for sensitive souls - the phrases are direct and intentionally drily articulated. The music is as blatant and extroverted as the lyrics: the guitar sound is steely and straightforward, occasionally padded out with a see-sawing Hammond groove, and topped again and again by wonderfully rough string solos that speak the language of hard, merciless and full-bodied rock.

    Musicians:

    • Eric Bloom (guitar, keyboards, vocal)

    • Allen Lanier (keyboards, guitar, synthesizer)

    • Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser (guitar, vocal)

    • Joe Bouchard (bass, vocal)

    • Albert Bouchard (drums, vocal)

Recording: 1974 by Tim Geelan and Jerry Smith

Production: Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Tyranny And Mutation (Speakers Corner)

Let's look back nostalgically to the days when influential DJs presented their precious wares on the radio, which were lapped up by listeners and music pirates alike. That progressive, perhaps psycho, rockers such as the Blue Öyster Cult led a somewhat niche existence makes one all the more eager to listen to the truly awesome discs recorded by this group in their early days. An important start was made with the re-release of BÖC's Secret Treaties (Columbia KC 32858), which is now followed by Tyranny And Mutation - another great disc. Although the band offers a mix of slightly subdued, milder pieces, the opening number The Red & The Black makes it fully clear that we are in for a dizzy roller-coaster ride here. Subsequently the Black side with its straightforward guitar riffs is mixed together with a complex melody and results in an amazingly colourful sound (O.D.'d On Life Itself), it is refreshingly naive, full of feisty complicated rock (Baby Ice Dog), and soars to celestial heights in Wings Wetted Down with its polyphonic male voices.

After the death of 'Lemmy' Kilmister in 2015, we can now enjoy only one group with a heavy-metal Umlaut in its name. But who wants to wait around until some radio DJ puts this great chunk of meaty rock'n'roll on the turntable?

    Musicians:

    • Allen Lanier (keyboards, guitar)

    Limited Edition Pressing

Everybody's favourite band, Uncle Acid, release a new single, Pusher Man on Rise Above Records. The single is backed by Remember Tomorrow, an Iron Maiden cover, initially available on a Kerrang (legendary UK magazine) cover-mount CD.

Pusher Man is taken from the bands fourth album, The Night Creeper, which was released to much acclaim in July of last year. The track was recorded as part of the album sessions at Toe Rag Studios in early 2015 with engineer Liam Watson (White Stripes, Tame Impala, Electric Wizard).

They released their breakthrough album Blood Lust in 2011, a homage to British Hammer and folk horror films of the 1970s, a candle-lit head-trip of withered hands, ritual knives and gallows ropes. Mind Control (2013), their third album, looked further afield, to the post-Charles Manson US for inspiration: Jim Jones dosing the Kool-Aid. Blue Cheer, Blue Oyster Cult and B-movie biker movies. War, Watergate, serial killers and suicidal TV evangelists.

Drenik's sensitive vocals have faded into the background in deference to a tough, guitar heavy 70s attack not far at times
from Thin Lizzy or Blue Oyster Cult. That's immediately obvious when the first track, "Just Weight" opens on a wave of
guitar feedback before shifting to a majestic pop/rocker that doesn't overstay its welcome in about three and a half
    minutes. - American Songwriter

There aren't a lot of frills or gimmicks surrounding Battleme's second album future runs magnetic because, simply
put, the music speaks for itself. Bombastic, driving and powerful, the album is a timeless
collection of rock anthems. -The Deli

Matt Drenik's latest (and greatest) musical incarnation Battleme is hard to put in one box. He conjures up potent rock
songs dressed up with lush power chords and clean production. That super chunky rock sound along with a heavy,
heavy tone of dreaminess as in stepping into a dreamland makes me think of bands like Spacehog, Silverchair, Smashing Pumpkins, Wires On Fire and even Dream Theater. - American Pancake

    The Darkening Plain

Transmaniacon take the blueprint and soundworld laid down by Bloodrock, Mountain, Steppen-wolf, Blue Oyster Cult and Alice Cooper, and add a hefty slab of dark doom, hard riffs, punk atti-tude and stoner metal to ramp it up for the 21st century. The vibe is steeped in 70's rock, but the sound is definitely 'NOW' From the Sabbathian sludge of 'City Of Chaos' to the Dead Kennedy-esque 'An Eye For An Eye' and the stoner moves of 'Chasing The Insane' the album is shot through with twists and chock full of riffs. This is hard rock at its hardest and heaviest set against an expansive post apocalyptic backdrop. Nothing encapsulates the cinematic darkness more than the album opener, which grafts a progressive approach to hard rock and doom. 'Quintessence of Dust' is a 24 minute monolithic mindfuck of epic proportions, the now completed score to the still-born science fiction horror story possibly. An intense listen that features the spoken word talents of punk poet Lydia Lunch. 'Quintessence Of Dust' is a grim eco warning, a tale of alien invasion and payback time for a future Earth's corpulent consumer-ism, rampant waste and self centred greed. A hideous flesh and metal robot army, hybrid humans inadvertently created by man himself, invade, take over and consume the Earth Sleeve is by one of the real legends of horror, sci-fi and fantasy illustration, Ian Miller.

Over There ... And Over Here

Paradise of Bachelors presents the first-ever reissue of the previously obscure 1983 LP by the Red Rippers. Written and recorded by Navy pilot Ed Bankston, the album's nine battle-scarred country-boogie/psych dispatches chronicle the experiences of Bankston and his fellow vets during the Vietnam War and back home. Produced in collaboration with the artist, the package includes extensive liner notes, archival photos, and (with the vinyl) a digital download coupon.

Scarce and seemingly inscrutable, the sole recording credited to the Red Rippers has long captivated and mystified record collectors. When we first encountered Over There and Over Here, we were fascinated by the prescient, genre-dredging synthesis of Waylonesque honky-stomp with early '80s new wave production values and eerie, out-of-time psychedelic guitar leads weirdly reminiscent of the Blue Öyster Cult, Dire Straits, and the Meat Puppets at their most desert-drunk. We were intrigued by the record's ambiguous provenance (Oracle Records?) and moved by its complex, apparently deeply personal articulation of an enlisted man's efforts to break on through his fear, anger, and disillusionment during and after the Vietnam War.

Once we finally tracked down songwriter, singer, and guitarist Edwin Dale Bankston in Phoenix, Arizona, he told us that he wrote these nine potent blues during the decade following his return in 1972 from serving on the Navy aircraft carrier USS Kittyhawk in Vietnam. He recorded them while stationed in Pensacola, Florida and sold the resulting 1983 album through an advertisement in Soldier of Fortune magazine, largely to other veterans. The songs chronicle his own and other vets' harrowing experiences both in country and back home, and are utterly unlike most popular music commentaries on the Vietnam War. You've heard the strident protest songs blasted forth from that myth-shrouded era; many retain a visceral power and poetic outrage, but few, beyond a professed empathy for flimsy, victimized stock characters, accurately represent the actual lived experience and agency of soldiers.

For many years, Metallica's 1987 EP Garage Days Re-Revisited was the most sought-after item in their catalog; it was constantly bootlegged in the '90s, and often supplemented by a host of covers Metallica had released on singles and compilations throughout the years. By 1998, the band had understandably grown frustrated with this situation and decided to confront the problem head-on by reissuing all these rarities. Savvy businessmen that they are, they also realized they needed to give hardcore fans who already owned all the covers a reason to purchase the new set -- hence, the expansion of the Garage Days EP to the double-disc blowout Garage, Inc. The second disc's rarities are balanced by the first disc's new covers, the bulk of which were recorded following the Reload tour. It shouldn't come as a surprise that these covers recall the blooze 'n' boogie heavy rock of the Loads, but what is a surprise is that Metallica seems to have found their footing in this style through other people's songs. Whether it's Bob Seger, Blue Öyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, Nick Cave, or the all-star jam on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Tuesday's Gone, the band effortlessly makes the songs seem like their own, through a bizarre mix of respect and ballsy irreverence. ... And if raw is what you want, the equally diverse disc two provides all the thrills you could hope for. At one time, it might have seemed a little odd that Metallica would cover Budgie, Diamond Head, the Misfits, and Queen, but if Garage, Inc. proves anything, it's that the group's musical instincts, risks, and sense of humor have made them the greatest metal band of the '80s and '90s.

    Die Screaming

Something sinister is looming in the mist - a ghastly three-headed apparition, equal parts riffage & rancour and fuelled by a steady diet of garage rock 7-inches played at 33RPM and horror movies watched at 5AM, the primeval force of Satan's Satyrs is returned to the earth to lay waste to everything in its path.

Rising from the primordial ooze of Herndon, Virginia Satan's Satyrs hit the metal underground like a tidal wave of sulphur with their debut proper, 2012's Wild Beyond Belief. This almighty assault, almost entirely the work of chief Satyr Clayton Burgess, was a harrowing blast of fuzz-drenched aggro - a clash of Venom-esque metalpunk squalor and in-the-red garage-rock dementia.

With Jarrett Nettnin soon joining the fray on guitar and Stephen Fairfield on drums, the power-trio were soon invited by Electric Wizard to 2013's Roadburn Festival, which they graced with two scorching sets, one being entirely comprised of cuts by their heinous heroes Blue Cheer. Yet the three-piece, despite being barely into their twenties, weren't about to rest on their laurels. What's more, the result of their onward march into grisly pastures new is the more mature yet no less malicious new opus, 'Die Screaming' which sees it's European release via Bad Omen Records in 2014.

This time around, the band set about expanding their sound, maintaining their trash-obsessed aesthetic whilst sharpening their songcraft to produce an album possessed of both mighty heaviosity and incisive hooks. Bolstered by roaring Hammond and percussive ornamentation that bring still more Hammer Horror atmosphere to the fray, 'Die Screaming' transcends the band's Black Sabbath, Stooges and Black Flag influences to arrive at a relentlessly gory and gung-ho assault on the senses. One minute, this terror-troupe are dishing out the rotten rock n'roll of 'One By One (They Die) and Curse Of The Corpse, which stalk the Earth like the reanimated corpses of Budgie and Blue Oyster Cult records past. The next, on the jaw-dropping title-track, they're throwing Death SS, the Alice Cooper of Sick Things and Scott Reagers-era Saint Vitus into a bubbling cauldron and standing well back. Yet at all times Satan's Satyrs' gonzo attack is authentically red in both tooth and claw.

Rising high above the overkill of self-styled occult rock that lurks in the underground at present. Satan's Satyrs are blazing a trail through a nightmarish world of battered VHS videos, overheated ampstacks and dog-eared vinyl, and are a band fit to set the pulse of any self-respecting trash connoisseur racing. With 'Die Screaming', they're set to carry out the Devil's bidding across the globe with uniquely sordid and salacious style.

    Lucifer I

Restless creative spirits never sleep and class is eternal. Thus, the timely and welcome return of Johanna Sadonis is only to be expected. Despite the sudden and distinctly premature disintegration of her previous band The Oath in 2014, Johanna's passion for making music that touches the darkest recesses of the soul has blazed on. The result is Lucifer - a new manifestation of the Berlin-based singer and songwriter's extraordinary and potent musical vision.

Although still firmly rooted in the fertile soil first cultivated by Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Blue Oyster Cult, Lucifer exist in a proudly liberated and limitless sonic realm, where the heaviest blues rock is a mere starting point for the band's skyward creative trajectory. Lucifer's instinctive take on the very soul of early heavy metal is the electrified essence of rock'n'roll at its nascent purest. This is Magic Rock - heavy, heartfelt and holistic.

Eschewing the now well-worn clichÉs of the occult rock explosion in favour of a truthful and tempestuous re-imagining of classic 70s proto-metal and turbocharged blues, the two songs on this band's debut seven-inch single crackle and fizz with nascent energy and the compelling conviction of music made for all the right reasons. Boasting a sound that revels in exquisite analogue warmth without ever retreating into some nostalgic ghetto, both 'Anubis' and 'Morning Star' came to life at Candy Bomber studios in Berlin, under the supervision of aural wizard Ingo Krauss, a one-time apprentice of legendary Krautrock producer Connie Plank. With the finest and most unique collection of old school analogue equipment, from tape machines to vintage amps, Candy Bomber provided Lucifer with everything they needed to realize their potent vision.

Lucifer represents the culmination of a spontaneous and intuitive creative mind-meld, wherein their leader's kaleidoscopic focus collides with the heavy soul abandon of earthbound but astrally-inspired musicians at the top of their game. With songs crafted by Johanna and Cathedral legend Gaz Jennings - the first Lucifer release is a mesmerizing glimpse into the sumptuous depths that await us further down the evolutionary trail.

After the release of their debut seven-inch via Rise Above Records in February, Lucifer releases their debut full length, Lucifer I. While Johanna states that this first release does give some indication of the musical direction that this band will pursue, there is a strong sense that these songs are merely a prologue to the much deeper and more substantial body of work to come. Meanwhile, the band intend to hit the road to spread the news of Magic Rock to as many willing sinners as possible. With a solid line-up, a renewed sense of collective purpose and the invigorating effects of creative adrenalin propelling them forward, Lucifer is a glowing advertisement for fresh starts, clarity of vision and the rejuvenative powers of heavy music. Lucifer lives!

    Celestial Explosion

Don Bikoff released one lone, rare solo album, Celestial Explosion, on Keyboard Records in 1968, now reissued by Tompkins Square. A kid from Oyster Bay, Long Island, Bikoff got his start in Greenwich Village, annoying Dave Van Ronk and playing the folk/blues circuit where he met Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Jesse Fuller and Mississippi John Hurt. In spite of this wide range of influences, Bikoff definitely has his own approach. Don is only 65 years old, and he's still playing strong.

    Unrepentant Geraldines

Unrepentant Geraldines is Tori Amos' 14th studio album and first album of original pop/rock songs in 5 years and a return to the unique brand of singer
songwriter style that catapulted her to stardom over two decades ago.

During her career Tori Amos has sold over 12 million albums worldwide.

Unrepentant Geraldines is an album in which Amos once more zeroes in on the writing of brightly melodic, deftly evocative singer song-writer soul-poems.
The album title was inspired by a painting of Daniel Maclise, depicting the Irish folk tale character Geraldine in the pose of the repentant Magdalene. This
sparked a process of thoughts about women's repentance and their struggles throughout history.

Fusing themes such as women in society, motherhood and contemporary events, and also drawing inspiration from the work of visual artists, painters
such as Cezanne, she has created a landmark album, demonstrating why she is regarded as one of the most remarkable artists of recent times.
Unrepentant Geraldines was written over the past few years and entirely recorded in her Cornwall studio with long-time collaborators Mark Hawley and
Marcel Van Limbeek, "working as a triangle".

2014 brought a fresh approach to creating and working for Tori. The album features "Trouble's Lament", an eerie Southern blues song in which Amos's
matchless voice conjures up images of how the "flames from Satan's tongue are charged and licking at her heels "

Other highlights include "Promise" a touching duet with her 13-year old daughter Natasha, that documents the mother/daughter relationship and the
promises they make to each other, "Giant's Rolling Pin." a pithy, spry, jig-like satire on the NSA/Edward Snowden affair and "Oysters" a classic Amos
piano ballad, evocative of her timeless breakthrough album, 1992's Little Earthquakes.
