    A Slice Of The Top

Mobley, who continued to evolve into a more advanced player throughout the 1960s, fits right in with such adventurous players as altoist James Spaulding, trumpeter Lee Morgan (with whom Mobley recorded frequently), pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Billy Higgins. The inclusion of Kiane Zawadi on euphonium and Howard Johnson on tuba adds a lot of color to this memorable outing.

    Swing Swang Swingin'

One of Jackie McLean's earliest Blue Notes, Swing, Swang, Swingin' parts company with the vast majority of his output for the label by concentrating chiefly on standards (only one of the seven tunes is a McLean original). Perhaps as a result of Blue Note's more prepared, professional approach to recording sessions, McLean sounds invigorated here, catapulting each melody forward before launching into a series of impassioned improvisations.

    Midnight Special

Midnight Special is a perfect complement to Back at the Chicken Shack, which was recorded the same day. Organist Jimmy Smith, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and guitarist Kenny Burrell always make for a potent team, and with drummer Donald Bailey completing the group, the quartet digs soulfully into such numbers as the groovin' Midnight Special, Jumpin' the Blues, and One O'Clock Jump. Highly recommended.

A Blue Note essential, Midnight Special by jazz organist Jimmy Smith is part of the Blue Note 75 anniversary vinyl reissue campaign - featuring 100 titles. Key to the initiative is high quality audio at affordable prices. Album features performances recorded in 1960.

    Mr. Shing-a-Ling

This album is from 1967 same year as Lou recorded the classic Alligator Bogaloo and this album stands the comparison with the Bogaloo album. The only change here is that George Benson was replaced by a young Jimmy Ponder. Ponder is still ,sadly enough, quite unknown to the big audience..his playing here is extremely pleasing and he lifts the sometimes to often played The shadow of your smile to another level with a beautiful solo. Idris Muhammad is recorded slightly more upfront than on the other albums which gives this recording some extra pulse and groove.Blue Mitchell on trumpet has that laid back bounce that give his solos that lift.

    African High Life

This is a very enjoyable if not essential album of traditional African highlife music set to dance tempos. Fans of Count Ossie (or other Pan-African musics that predate an outright American R&B influence) should know what to expect here. In other words, it doesn't sound as modern as Fela Kuti, so it won't supply the kinds of grooves expected on most dancefloors. This is a more traditional music and, despite its Blue Note affiliation, it should be appreciated on its own terms.

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound

...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. A Tremendously Important Historic Jazz Record That Pairs Guitar Virtuoso Wes Montgomery With Miles Davis' Rhythm Section - Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb

This is timeless music that has inspired innumerable jazz guitarists and aficionados. In fact, jazz guitar great Pat Metheny has said, I learned to play listening to Wes Montgomery's Smokin' At The Half Note. Metheny additionally said that the solo on If You Could See Me Now is his favorite of all time.

This legendary session was recorded at a New York nightclub. It captures Montgomery at the height of his improvisational powers. Many consider it the best performance on record by one of the most inventive guitarists in jazz history.

Highlights include the Miles Davis opener, No Blues and the following track, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now. And the album's versions of Unit 7 and Four On Six have helped to establish these songs as jazz standards.

    Blues In Trinity

As Dizzy Reece's first album for Blue Note, Blues in Trinity goes a long way to establish the trumpeter's signature sound. Reece doesn't take chances stylistically; he prefers to stay within the confines of hard bop. Nevertheless, he has a bold, forceful sound that simply burns with passion. Even on slower numbers, there's a fire to his playing that keeps Blues in Trinity from being predictable. The high quality of the album is even more impressive given the recording circumstances.

Hubbard says in the albums original liner notes: I tried to get that dark sound... which characterizes much of the rest of the music in the album. All of the compositions featured in the set are Hubbard's originals. Hubbard intended for the album to be a spiritual one, but not in the religious sense. In a sense that I consider music to be spiritual experience because you can get at your deepest feeling... .

Trumpeter Blue Mitchell's Blue Note debut went unissued for 17 years, only coming out on this 1980 LP (not yet reissued on CD). The set must have been lost in the shuffle, for the music is consistently excellent. Mitchell, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, altoist Leo Wright, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Gene Taylor, and drummer Roy Brooks perform four originals and obscurities, plus lyrical versions of Sweet and Lovely and Cry Me a River. Features Original Liner Notes By BB King.

Rare 1970 blues / R&B album produced by Swamp Dogg in Alabama.

Over the years I have listened to many records and albums of many types of music. As a disc jockey, I played many different kinds of "sounds", but I guess as an entertainer I pull a little harder for the blues and the blues performers because I want them to be heard, played, and respected as other music is; that is when it merits it. Lightnin' Slim's new album I think merits all the qualities that a great artist and a hit album should have. It's some great "sounds" - This is my opinion.

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. Kenny Drew was an unsung master of bebop. A brilliant pianist who started with the example of Bud Powell and then developed his own sound within the style, in the '50s Drew worked with some of the most important innovators of all time including Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Buddy DeFranco, Dinah Washington and Art Blakey. By 1960 when he recorded Undercurrent, Drew had already led ten albums of his own, mostly with duos and trios. Oddly enough he only had the opportunity to lead two albums in his life for Blue Note, an early effort from 1953 and the classic Undercurrent. Joined in a quintet by the young firebrand trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, the always-stimulating tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, the 32-year old pianist shows that he was ready to truly make his mark on the jazz world. All six compositions are his, and in his accompaniment of the passionate horn men and also in his soulful solos, Drew shows that he was one of the major hard bop stylists. This high energy album, which finds Hubbard, Mobley and Drew consistently inspiring each other to come up with heated statements, has many of the pianist's finest compositions including the roaring "Undercurrent," the bluesy "Funk-Cosity," the gospellish "The Pot's On," the well titled "Groovin' The Blues" and the beautiful "Ballade." Kenny Drew, who would move permanently to Europe in 1964 and would not lead another album until 1973, is heard throughout at the peak of his powers, creating his finest recording.

Who better than the perennially hip Jackie McLean to title an album Swing Swang Swingin? That's exactly what you get with this bopping set of standards for Blue Note from 1959. McLean's soulful alto wail is primed on this session which also features classic performances from Walter Bishop Jr., Jimmy Garrison and stalwart Art Taylor. A Fickle Sonance

Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean was one of the few jazz players to come up through bebop and incorporate free jazz into his style. Even though A Fickle Sonance preceded McLean's intense 1962 album Let Freedom Ring, the playing remained in a swinging blues-oriented style, showing no hint of the direction his music was about to take. The sidemen on the date (Tommy Turrentine [trumpet], Sonny Clark [piano], and Butch Warren [bass]) prove to be an invigorating combination of musicians, however not as involved in the burgeoning free music as drummer Billy Higgins. At the time of these sessions, Higgins had already played with Ornette Coleman, providing a link to the avant-garde, but nevertheless his playing follows the hard bop pace of the others. McLean provides two original compositions, Subdued and the title track, while Clark, Turrentine, and Warren fill the remaining tracks.

    Alive!

Alive! is the hardest funk LP Grant Green recorded during the later phase of his career, capturing a storming gig at Newark's ClichÉ Lounge. The sweaty club atmosphere adds something to the music that's difficult to pin down, yet unmistakably present -- a certain organic quality that isn't as noticeable on Green's studio albums of the time. Moreover, Green sounds more like the captain of his ship, with greater assurance in his musical direction and more strut on the R&B material.
