    The Seraphim Fall

BLOODLET has established themselves as one of the most intriguing bands out there today. They have shattered eardrums with there sonic noise from coast to coast, and The Seraphim Fall promises to be there most ground breaking effort to date. With Scott's blood-curdling vocals and intelligent lyrics added to a mix of technical bass lines, noisy guitars and heart stopping drums The Seraphim Fall pushes the limits of hardcore, metal and punk to a new level.

    A Haunting Curse

It's 75 degrees and sunny in St. Petersburg, FL but within the pleasant confines of producer Erik Rutan's increasingly popular Mana Studios come the sounds of the apocalypse; tones of the rhythmically sinister and fist-clenchingly metal variety. It is the audible battery of Goatwhore's Metal Blade debut A Haunting Curse. More molten than its gloomier predecessor, the album stays true to the band's original irreverent Bathory-meets-Baal (the god of thunder) in a bullpen sensibility with punkish resolve and those inimitable Louisiana grooves for which the band has become known. Songs like ber oldschool Bloodletting Upon The Cloven Hoof, the opening Wear These Scars Of Testimony and Silence Marked By The Breaking Of Bone are fast, dark and antagonistic, Falgoust's commanding voice and challenging lyrics adding knee-buckling severity to their collective instrumental agility. Rhythms collide with stop-on-a-dime accuracy and Duet's vexing riffs give things a torrential horns-to-the-sky exigency. A Haunting Curse is here to devour. You have been warned.

    Dopamine

Six years is a long time between albums, so it's not surprising Third Eye Blind changed between the release of 2009's Ursa Major and 2015's Dopamine. The biggest change was the contentious departure of guitarist Tony Fredianelli, a mainstay in TEB since he replaced founding member Kevin Cadogan in 2000. Dopamine pushes Jenkins' emotional bloodletting to the forefront, drawing explicit connections to such early, earnest hits as Jumper.

Much of the album marches to these strident strums with the band choosing to prioritize drama over hooks, providing an appropriate-enough setting for Jenkins' cloistered, claustrophobic confessions. That isn't to say Dopamine is devoid of pop, though. When the record gets cooking, chorus melodies can soar and riffs can punch, creating an insistent, surging, miniaturized arena rock -- music where the emotions and sound exist on a grand scale but the intent feels intimate. Some of this modesty does indeed derive from how the hooks feel sculpted, not immediate -- the exceptions, All the Souls and Rites of Passage, put the rest of the record in sharp relief. Dopamine shows the scars of labor, that in itself is impressive.

Costello at His Most Vicious: Songs Rumble and Storm, Dark Humor and Biting Lyrics Address Tumult, Jealousy, Vindictiveness

Part of Mobile Fidelity's Elvis Costello Reissue Series: Singer-Songwriter's First Eleven Studio Albums Available on Sumptuously Sounding 180g LP

Known in his youth as the angry young man, Elvis Costello waited until 1986 to create the most vicious record of his career. Stripped to the studs and produced by Nick Lowe, Blood and Chocolate seethes with vindictiveness, spite, and rancor. The 11-track effort clatters with raw rock n' roll menace and clangs with darkly humorous intent. Venomous, acerbic, and aggressive, it values rhythm and attack over harmony and melody. A volatile rite of passage on which harsh Telecaster riffs cut like razor blades and Costello spits words as if they were Molotov cocktails tossed at enemies, this is the satisfying sound of emotional catharsis.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, this collectable edition of Blood and Chocolate joins Mobile Fidelity's acclaimed Costello reissues series in presenting the icon's vital records in rich, dynamic, three-dimensional analog sound. That's never been truer than it is here. Costello and Co. recorded the songs in a large room at London's Olympic Studios while playing at stage volumes, an unconventional approach that nonetheless suited the music's raw feel. Nearly every track was done in three takes or less, with minimal vocal fixes and overdubs added immediately afterward. Such energy, spark, force, and pace thrive on this reissue.

Capturing the decibel-laden atmosphere that heightens the rhythmic pace and elevates the urgency of the deliveries, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP delivers the band's performances with wall-of-sound hugeness and booming authority. And while this isn't a record where subtlety reigns, listeners can now discern the acoustic guitar strummed by Lowe for the foundation of the savage Uncomplicated as well as the nuanced final bars of the inimitable I Want You on which each member's instrumental track is switched off to bleed into Costello's vocal microphone. Indeed, for all the apparent chaos, Steve Nieve's keyboards even get accurate placement and imaging on this incredible pressing. Then there's the temperament of the songs themselves-perhaps best described by Costello.

The album title and Eamon Singer's crude cover painting reflected some intense and uncertain situations. The record might have well been a blurred polaroid: a smashed-up room, a squashed box of chocolates, some broken glass and a little blood smeared on the wall, wrote the singer in 2002. The album [is] a pissed-off 32-year-old divorce's version of the musical blueprint with which I had begun my recording career with the Attractions. Indeed, the band-on the verge of fraying at the seams and at each other's throats in close confines-pummels twanging chords, beats up on notes, turns up amplifiers, and eyes everything with great suspicion.

Lyrically, Costello has seldom been wittier, sharper, or more malicious. The snarling, tables-turning I Hope You're Happy Now joins Bob Dylan's Positively Fourth Street as among the most lacerating kiss-off tunes ever penned. Similarly sarcastic, Next Time Round lends a pop rave-up air to the album's otherwise dark assault. The bloodletting Crimes of Paris and Poor Napoleon (featuring Pogues singer Cait O'Riordan playing the role of the voice of pity) confront the consequences of traumatic relationships and lustful choices with a savvy intellect. Given the mood and mindset of everyone and everything involved, it's no surprise that Costello and the Attractions wouldn't again work together until eight years later. Saying that Blood and Chocolate was worth the sacrifice is an understatement.

    Hasta La Muerte (Awaiting Repress)

Limited edition double vinyl from Southern Lord in Stoughton gatefold jacket which perfectly complements the amazing painting by artist Dan Seagrave (Entombed, Morbid Angel).

Following the initial vinyl release of Xibalba's Madre Mi Por Los Dias debut full-length in 2011 (via A389 Records), Southern Lord released a CD pressing of the album, as part of its ongoing underground series. Madre Mi Por Los Dias stormed the hardcore world with its apocalyptic, down-tuned, slow-motion brutality, the band's ultra-energizing buildups and relentlessly brutal breakdowns instantly drawing comparisons to Disembodied, Bloodlet, and the heaviest of the late '90s/early 2000s hardcore scene as well as kings of low-end, groove-laden death metal like Crowbar, Obituary and Sepultura.

Hasta La Muerte, Spanish for "to the death," is the band's first full-length album for Southern Lord. It's a lethal collision of brutal death metal, vicious hardcore and oppressive sludge, taking the concept of heavy to a new, crushing level in the process! Hasta La Muerte was recorded and produced by Taylor Young (Nails). Greg Anderson of Sunn O))), Goatsnake and Southern Lord has collaborated with the band on 2 tracks: "Flood" and "Cold." Anderson's sub-bass six string warfare seemlessly integrates within the ultra-heaviness of the Xibalba sound.

The band's songwriting, performance and recording of the album shows Xibalba taking a giant leap forward. Hasta La Muetre will firmly establish the band as a force to be reckoned with as well as new leaders within the underground metal scene.

    Do To The Beast

2xLP 45 RPM 180g Vinyl With Gatefold Sleeve

    Includes 16 Page Booklet

Do to the Beast is the first new album by The Afghan Whigs in over a
decade and a half. Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1988, the band has
long stood out from its peers, with their savage, rapturous blend of hard
rock, classic soul, and frontman Greg Dulli's searing angst and obsessions.
The new album is both a homecoming - it marks their return to Sub
Pop, for whom the Whigs were the first signing from outside the label's
Northwest base - and a glimpse into the future of one of the most
acclaimed bands of the past twenty-five years.

Do to the Beast is an appropriately feral title for one of the most intense,
cathartic records of Dulli's entire career. It adds fresh twists to The
Afghan Whigs canon: there's the film noir storytelling of Black Love, the
exuberance of 1965, the brutal introspection of Gentlemen. However,
the album exudes a galvanized musical spirit and rhythmic heft that
suggest transcendence and hope amidst the bloodletting.

Recorded in L.A., New Orleans, Cincinnati, and Joshua Tree - a virtual
map of the band's past and present homes, the album features Whigs
co-founders Greg Dulli and John Curley, along with the core band of
guitarists Dave Rosser & Jon Skibic, multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson,
and drummer Cully Symington. Also featured are soul iconoclast Van
Hunt, Mark McGuire (Emeralds), Johnny "Natural" Nagera (Usher's
musical director), Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic
Monkeys), Clay Tarver (Bullet LaVolta, Chavez), Dave Catching (QOTSA,
Eagles of Death Metal), among others.

    Tackle Box

Contains Bonus Live CD With Career-Spanning Tracks

The title of the album is Tackle Box. Why? Because it's a catchy metaphor for the anxiety-induced, claustrophobic spirit that the country now inhabits? Get it? Tackle, like football, and boxing, aggressive, confrontational sports like the historical period we currently, um, 'enjoy'? Yes, but.....is it more specific to the White House and the tense, argumentative dictator-like relationship that Trump has with all that surround him? His wife, business associates, foreign leaders, staff and media? Yes, but ... is it called Tackle Box as a thinly disguised allusion to the torment and conflicted dialogue I wrestle with between my ears on a minute to minute basis? There's that, yup... but maybe I'm just saying it's time to go to the mat and deal hands-on with this oppression? Okay sure, but really it's called Tackle Box because it's got so many hooks!

I'm pretty lucky to do what I do in this life - writing these songs and being able to perform them to appreciative audiences around the world. Never let it be said that dreams don't come true! And I kinda enjoy every aspect, the writing, traveling, recording, rehearsing and performing. But this album in particular, which was basically recorded all by myself in my high-security, bunker-like isolated home studio, felt particularly personal, maybe some kind of spiritual blood-letting if you will. Catharsis! A semi-humorous approach to some crazy political times! I had a lot of fun making it, it induced some much needed laughs. Hope you feel the same. Enjoy!
