Shine A Light: Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad

In March 2016, singers Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles bound train at Chicago's Union Station with the hope of reconnecting with the culture of American railroad travel and the songs it inspired. Winding along 2,728 miles of track, the pair recorded songs while the train paused to pick up passengers. In waiting rooms and at the track side in St. Louis, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Alpine, El Paso and Tucson, they set up their recording equipment, performing classic railroad songs while keeping one eye on the train, bounding back aboard just before pulling out for the next town. After four days crossing the country, they pulled into Los Angeles at 4:30am, recording their final song in Union Station at dawn, just as the first birds began to sing.

The resulting album Shine A Light: Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad takes listeners along on that journey and will be released September 23 on Cooking Vinyl Records. The album features the perfectly matched voices of Bragg & Henry and captures the varied atmospheres and environments in which they recorded-from the close proximity of soft furnished sleeping cars to cathedral-like ambience of waiting halls built to hold thousands of passengers. Containing thirteen songs originally recorded by legendary singers such as Lead Belly, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers and more, the album reveals an often forgotten but integral part of America's musical heritage.

    Mr. Love And Justice

In his two and a half decades carrying the torch of social justice, Billy Bragg has melded the folksy populism of Woody Guthrie with the anger and indignation of The Clash. Both are perfectly encapsulated on his Anti debut, Mr. Love & Justice. Despite the intense politics behind his songs, Billy has never lost sight of the power of personal relationships to hold us together and bring about the kind of redemption that outstrips even the greatest political movements. Musically, this record combines the loose, Stonesy groove Bragg found working with Wilco on the Mermaid Ave. sessions, with the best parts of his punk and music hall roots. On his most mature record to date, the title says it all.

Life's A Riot With Spy Vs Spy (30th Anniversary Edition) (Awaiting Repress)

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of his seminal 1983 debut recording 'Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy', Billy Bragg releases a special edition comprising the original album re-mastered, plus a new, live solo version by Billy recorded as a unique encore at his London Union Chapel show on Wednesday 5 June 2013.

Billy says "Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy has a very special place in my heart, being the first step on a 30 year journey that has seen me travel to places that I could never have imagined back in '83. Also, as it's only 17 minutes long, I can knock the whole album out as an encore if the fancy takes me - no need to book the Royal Albert Hall and the London Symphony Orchestra"

    Love Ire & Song

Frank Turner is an English folk singer-songwriter and former vocalist of legendary UK punk band Million Dead. Like an earlier folksinger with roots in the punk movement, Billy Bragg, Turner spits out songs that are at once effortless and heartfelt, filled with venom, self-doubt, and love for the everyday people he meets in the street. This album was released in the UK in 2008 to glowing reviews and year-end best of lists and is now available stateside.

    Mermaid Avenue Vol. II

ho knew that after the undeniable, sometimes shimmering, sometimes rustic magic of Mermaid Avenue that there was enough quality material for a second volume? By setting their own music to Woody Guthrie's lyrics, Billy Bragg and Wilco once again offer a 50-minute testament to Guthrie's long, dynamic shadow. This sophomore meeting is as balanced between the up-tempo and the down-tempo as was the first Mermaid. Jeff Tweedy's rasp gives all the Wilco-driven tunes a certain grit, and the songs Bragg takes on have a luminescent, frank earnestness that intensifies the delivery of Guthrie's lyrical social critiques. Hot Rod Hotel, with Bragg on the mic, melds the two approaches best, and Secret of the Sea is the CD's poppiest centerpiece--aptly aimed at radio airplay like the first Mermaid's California Stars. Natalie Merchant's playful I Was Born is brief but sweet, just as bluesman Corey Harris's Against the Law is an uplift, with his passionate vocal wail mirroring the political gist of Guthrie's words. The moody closers Black Wind Blowing and Someday, Some Morning, Sometime end Volume 2 with a pair of sweetly sad gems, one a Bragg-sung folk blues that mourns the loss of cotton crops in the American dustbowl era, the other a Tweedy-sung paean to lost love. At the dawn of a new millennium, with labor and the distribution of wealth as pressing historical issues that disrupt every International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization soiree, the time is right for Woody. --Andrew Bartlett

    King Krule (Awaiting Repress)

King Krule's (formerly Zoo Kid) second release brings with it, an expansion of vision, both musically and thematically. The connective tissue between these five tracks is still Marshall's stark, direct lyrics, but over the span of the self-titled EP, there is an arresting sonic progression, as his songs open up to become a loose knit meditation and renewal of hope in the face of desperation. Shades of The Streets' plainspoken and observant ramble dance with the heart on sleeve confessions of Billy Bragg. Archy's influences are a patchwork for his voice to lay in, woven from several generations music as divergent as the 80s romantics, jazz, no wave and dub.

The first vocal track 'Bleak Bake', for instance, opens with levitating keyboards and Marshall clearing his throat, before sampled strings and 808 drum 'pooms' swoon in and he sighs. 'The Noose of Jah City' drives the knife in deeper -some of his most intoxicating incantations to date- with Marshall singing of being "suffocated in concrete" over a lushly upholstered backdrop of chiming guitars and shuffling sampled beats. While in the gorgeous 'Portrait in Black and Blue' he unleashes a bounding piece of classic croon. But even though the subject matter may at times be harrowing, the songs themselves are never anything less than exquisitely crafted, possessed of an almost spectral beauty, as epitomised in the shimmering instrumental intro "363N63".

Taken as a whole, the "King Krule" EP is the sound of a young man growing up and attempting to grapple with the realities of the world he inhabits, and a fascinating, brutal journey it is too.

    Here Be Monsters

"When they didn't know quite what was there, they put Here Be Monsters. When I think of where my career has gone over the last 35 years, it's usually in that area - off the map." --Jon Langford

Here Be Monsters finds acclaimed musician/visual artist Jon Langford and his band Skull Orchard scanning the outskirts of popular culture, its title born of medieval cartographers' term for the dragons, sea serpents, and other mythical beasties that reside beyond the boundaries of the known universe. This new album will feature a unique piece of artwork specific to each track printed on individual inserts included with copies of the CD. Best known for his work in the The Mekons and the Waco Brothers, Langford has been a leading pioneer in the assimilation of folk/country music into punk rock since the genre's first evolution over 30 years ago.

The album sees the Welsh-born, Chicago-based singer/songwriter, bandleader, producer, painter, and poet plotting a clear-eyed, sharp-elbowed course through such far-flung subjects as alternative hierarchies and astronomy, perpetual war for perpetual profit, the culture of detachment, middle age, fatherhood, fame, and the fleetingness of love. The subtext of the album is maybe the things our civilization thinks of as fixed and immovable might actually be redundant/obsolete/discredited and it's up to us to question and find new rocks to be washed up on , says Langford, who called in Mekons/Waco Brothers veteran Mike Hagler (My Morning Jacket, Wilco, Neko Case, Billy Bragg) to record this album at Chicago's Kingsize Sound Labs. Skull Orchard used to be a fairly solitary activity - songs that didn't fit anywhere else - stuff that was too Welsh or personal to bother the Mekons or Wacos with, says Langford, but something happened with the band I formed to tour with the previous record. It turned into a real group, so this is much more of a band project than any of the solo things I've done before.

Also known for being a prolific visual artist, Langford designed all the artwork for Here Be Monsters himself, including individual designs for each track that will be showcased on separate inserts in the CD and in a collage on the LP jacket. This album really brings the art and the songs together - a chicken/egg which came first situation. The songs are very visual and in some cases came directly from the paintings, continued Langford. Star maps, strange creatures, sympathetic monsters, monsters we have created - the little poem at the top of the album is all about that.

    Mermaid Avenue Vol. III

When American folk legend Woody Guthrie died in 1967, at the age of 55, among his stored belongings were thousands of complete song lyrics for which he had not written out music or made recordings. Many of them had been written in the 1940s and '50s, in the Guthrie family home on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The lyrics remained in boxes for decades, but once his daughter Nora found them in the 1990s, she knew they had to be shared. She approached English singer-songwriter and activist Billy Bragg to select some to set to music. The Chicago rock band Wilco came aboard soon after, with Jeff Tweedy writing music-along with his late bandmate Jay Bennett on some songs-and the band recording with both Tweedy and Bragg on vocals. Natalie Merchant joined the group to sing a duet with Bragg and two solo songs, and guitarist/singer Corey Harris, who wrote two songs and co-wrote one, performed on many tracks.

In 1998, the first batch of songs was released to critical acclaim as Mermaid Avenue, receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album. This second volume followed in 2000. This third volume, released in conjunction with Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions.

    The Brutalist Bricks

New Jersey's Ted Leo And The Pharmacists are back after a two year break with their fourth album and Matador debut, The Brutalist Bricks. This extraordinarily assured, wide ranging album explores new ground for Ted, showcasing his singer/songwriter skills while remaining emotionally and energetically true to his punk roots. From the thrilling opener and video track The Mighty Sparrow to the apocalyptic Last Days, startling influences reveal themselves. Sure, hardcore punk vibes are there, as is acoustically driven power-pop, but from Elvis Costello to Billy Bragg, there's a softer, at times more introspective side at work here, with one entirely acoustic number. From start to finish, Ted's inventive, sparkling songwriting and his tightly wound, explosively chop-worthy band keep the momentum both ferocious and fascinating.

    The Traveling Kind

The Traveling Kind follows the longtime friends' first duet album, 2013's Old Yellow Moon, which won Best Americana Album at the 56th annual Grammy Awards as well as two awards at the 2013 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards Show, for Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year. The album also debuted at #4 on the Billboard's Top Country Albums chart.

Produced by Grammy Award winner Joe Henry (Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann), The Traveling Kind comprises 11 duet tracks, including six new songs written by Harris and Crowell with co-writing by Mary Carr, Cory Chisel, Will Jennings, and Larry Klein. Also featured are new renditions of previous Crowell cuts including No Memories Hanging Around as well as new interpretations of Lucinda Williams' I Just Wanted to See You So Bad and Amy Allison's Her Hair Was Red.

Of the project, Harris comments, In the words of Willie Nelson, 'The life I love is making music with my friends,' and there's no better friend for me to make music with than Rodney. I can't wait to get out there on the road with him and play the songs from this new record.

Crowell adds, Emmy and I wrote six of the eleven songs on The Traveling Kind, which was recorded in a six-day span with our Glory Band, Steuart Smith, and Billy Payne. Joe Henry was at the helm as producer and Justin Neibank did the recording. The experience was pretty much akin to falling off a log.

Denver's Ian Cooke released his second album, Fortitude, in January of 2012, with the help of The Greater Than Collective.

Produced by Ian O'Dougherty and mixed by Bob Ferbache, (Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Wovenhand), Fortitude showcases the wide array of musical proficiency that Cooke possesses as he switches from playful to dark and sincere at the flick of a cello bow. Splicing in elements of indie, classical, progressive rock, and more, the album builds on the foundation laid down by his previous album, The Fall I Fell, and expands it with stronger writing and loftier concepts.

Cooke's talent coupled with his diligent work ethic has earned him several accolades, including features in SPIN, a Daytrotter session, a #1 ranking in the 2009 Denver Post Music Poll and "Best Singer Songwriter," "Best album," and "Best Avant-Garde" nods by Westword. Cooke was also featured alongside Billy Bragg, M. Ward, Owen Pallet, and more on a Joanna Newsom tribute.

He has toured in the US and Australia playing with The Dresden Dolls, Crooked Fingers, Built to Spill, The Decemberists, The Flaming Lips, Blonde Redhead, Devotchka, Rasputina, Wovenhand, Pedro the Lion and many more. With packaging as engaging as the music it contains, Fortitude is a direct copy of nothing, a truly original and unique endeavor.

    6 Feet Beneath The Moon

Six Feet Beneath The Moon is the long-anticipated debut album from Southeast London's King Krule.

Archy Marshall aka King Krule broke out two years ago, at the tender age of 16 with his eponymous
EP released on True Panther. King Krule's sound, a
hypnotic mixture indebted to working class British
song-smiths like Billy Bragg as much as NY No-Wave
and hip hop carries a maturity and depth far beyond
his years. The EP's lead single, "Noose of Jah City"
found a great deal of success on BBC's Radio 1,
and brought Archy praise from Pitchfork, The NY
Times, FADER and numerous other publications. His
music has also won him fans among today's young
music elite - Mac Miller, Frank Ocean and Tyler, The
Creator are all supporters, collaborators and fans.

Six Feet Beneath The Moon takes the potential
evident in the EP and blows it out of the water.
Across 14 tracks Archy expertly weaves incredible
stories of London life, his own relationships and
experiences with the swagger of a street poet, all in his incredibly distinct smoky baritone. The album, recorded mostly near Archy's South London
home with producer Rodaidh McDonnell (The XX,
Savages, How To Dress Well) is stark but incredibly
rich - painting with a palate full of hip hop, jazz, no-wave and poetic influences.

The album shares the electric confidence of some of last decade's most important debuts - Arctic
Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What
I'm Not', The Streets' Original Pirate Material and
Dizzee Rascal's Boy In Da Corner. It is somehow
both a perfect summary of a young man's life in a
particular part of London and a universal, deeply
moving and compelling statement. Most importantly,
it is the flag ushering in a new and important musical voice that is sure to be with us for quite some time.

Limited Edition Vinyl Reissue Of The Iconic MC5 Guitartist's First Solo Album, Originally Released In 1995 On Epitaph

Wayne Kramer is a songwriter whose reputation writing music for film and television could very well supplant his legend as one of the world's stellar
guitarists. Wayne was a teenage greaser and leader of the MC5, widely recognized as the prototype for punk rock and heavy metal. In 1969, the MC5
released the incendiary album Kick Out The Jams on Elektra Records. After Elektra dropped them due to "radical antics", they released two albums on
Atlantic: Back In The USA, produced by Bruce Springsteen's manager Jon Landau and the masterpiece High Time. Between world tours, Wayne scored

Wayne spent 1976-1978 in Lexington Federal Penitentiary, where he was tutored by fellow inmate Red Rodney, trumpeter for the Charlie Parker Quintet.
It was Red who taught Wayne how to read music and the two formed a prison band. After release, Wayne co- wrote the acclaimed R&B musical The Last
Words of Dutch Schultz with Mick Farren, then joined Don Was' revolutionary acid funk band Was (Not Was) as its original guitarist. Wayne helped define
the band's sound through, of all things, the dance hit "Wheel Me Out". In the 1980s in New York City, Wayne teamed up with infamous Johnny Thunders
for a short-lived, headline grabbing, punk rock group Gang War.

In 1994, Wayne moved to Los Angeles and signed with Epitaph Records. He recorded four records in as many years. He produced the album Full Circle
with provocateur John Sinclair and produced an MC5 retrospective collection for Rhino Records entitled The Big Bang, as well as a hits compilation
    Beyond Cyberpunk.

Wayne is recognized nearly as often as a vigorous social activist. Along with wife Margaret Saadi Kramer and British singer Billy Bragg, Wayne founded
Jail Guitar Doors USA, a Los Angeles based non-profit organization that provides guitars for prisoner rehabilitation. Known as "the loudest charity on
planet earth," JGD-USA launched at Sing Sing Prison in 2009 and has since intervened in over 50 adult and juvenile facilities. Shepard Fairey donated
the charity's logo and board member Adam McKay's company Funny or Die donated the design of its interactive site. Shira Piven and Adam McKay
directed a short film entitled The Beast & The Angel for PBS as part of their new LifeCasters series. It is a film about Wayne and it is currently in
    broadcast nationally.

Wayne's brand new album Lexington entered the national jazz charts at #6 in May, 2014. It is the flagship release for the launch of his label Industrial
    Amusement.

Moving forward with the past, Wayne is re-releasing the now infamous The Hard Stuff. The Hard Stuff features members of The Melvins, Clawhammer,
Bad Religion and long-time friend/collaborator, UK anarchist Mick Farren. Released in 1995, this album was the best-selling album of Wayne's solo
career. Nearly 20 years later, Wayne's tunes are finally getting out there again to wow old fans and new fans alike!

    Flying Saucer Rock N Roll

    Colored Vinyl

Positively praised by Maximum Rock n Roll's Tim Yohannan upon their original release, the first three 7"s from California's garage/punk legends the Groovie Ghoulies have been compiled for the first time ever on "Flying Saucer Rock N Roll." Released to coincide with the group's 30th anniversary, this collection presents the first ten official songs the band ever released - on vinyl for the first time in over 25 years, and for the first time ever on compact disc! The tracks are newly transferred and re-mastered for digital release. In addition, the Green Door Recording Company vaults have turned up three primitive and rare studio bonus tracks, newly discovered and available for the first time ever in all three formats! They were originally dubbed and sold by the band in cassette format in the late 80's! Flying Saucer Rock N Roll captures all the early rawness and energy of the young and eager Kepi as he and his friend Eric just lay down tracks with a drum machine on a Tascam 4 track cassette recorder!!! No laws, no rules, just rock n roll! You can hear the presence of many of the bands that remained life-long influences on the band, from the obvious (Rolling Stones, Ramones) to the more sublime (Billy Bragg, Neil Diamond). These recordings are rare and historic, and mark the first of twelve planned releases which will result in a full catalog re-issue from this entertaining and enduring band. These releases will trace the evolution of Groovie Ghoulies, and this album is the first chapter in the story! A young Kepi Ghoulie, who didn't even have a full band line-up, felt so driven by the D.I.Y. punk and new wave movement, and the need to create his own brand of hi-energy rock n roll, that he recruited his friend to record his crazy vision like a rock n roll Ed Wood! And so away they went! That dream has not stopped to this day! 30 years and close to 20 full length records later, Kepi is still at it, writing, recording, and touring at a relentless and passionate pace.Thousands upon thousands of Groovie Ghoulies records have been sold over the years. Their songs have been placed in B-movies and snow and skateboard videos. The most random and unusual places: that is where you will find Kepi and his 'Ghoulie Family'. Let's relive the magic that provided part of the soundtrack to the lives of so many Southern Californians. It was a scene which grew into part of the East Bay Pop Punk sound, to Asian Man records and now on into the Burger Records generation! Hail Hail Flying Saucer Rock n Roll! Long may it rock, out into the Universe, second verse same as the first!

    Mermaid Avenue (Out Of Stock)

When you first heard that Billy Bragg and Wilco were teaming up to set some Woody Guthrie lyrics to music, you knew it'd be an interesting project. But did anyone realistically think Mermaid Avenue would also wind up being one of 1998's finest albums? That's exactly what it is, a distinction it pulls off by simultaneously honoring Guthrie and blasting away any folksy expectations we might have of his music. Walking Guthrie's World War II-era lyrics into the 20th century's second, rock & roll half, Bragg and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy take turns on lead vocals, and the entire group collaborates on a sound that draws on folk- and country-rock, from Bob Dylan and the Band to Gram Parsons and Uncle Tupelo. The results are nearly flawless, ranging from yearning laments and playful children's rockers to horny ballads and brave protest songs that are not merely political but also profoundly moral. Like all of Guthrie's work, Mermaid Avenue is music to live better by. -- David Cantwell
