    Big Thing

Big Thing is the fifth album by Duran Duran, released worldwide in 1988, an reissued on 180gm vinyl from Rhino

Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. Their reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style. Each video the group made was distinctive, incorporating a number of cinematic styles to showcase the band as either part of the jet-setting elite (Rio) or as worldly adventurers (Hungry Like the Wolf). Between 1982 and 1984, they rocketed from underground British post-punk sensations to teen idols.

In 1981, Duran Duran became the leaders of the new romantic movement, and media sensations in the British music and mainstream press. The group's popularity increased through its cutting-edge music videos, especially the bizarre, racy clip for Girls on Film. the single became the group's first Top Ten hit, setting the stage for the fall release of its eponymous debut album. Duran Duran reached number three upon its release and stayed in the charts for 118 weeks.

If ever there was a "band that launched a thousand bands," it would be the Ventures. Founded in Tacoma, WA in 1958, their guitar-based instrumental sound would prove hugely influential, inspiring countless followers to pick up a guitar, bass or set of drumsticks and try to emulate their heroes. As these musical neophytes would soon learn, it wasn't as easy as it initially appeared. The Ventures were masters of tone and technique, deftly arranging their instruments in a seamless approach that was instantly recognizable.

Because they were an instrumental group, their songs needed no translation, which resulted in a huge worldwide following. While many rock bands have claimed to be "big in Japan" over the years, the Ventures were the country's first rock superstars and they maintain a devoted worldwide following to this day. With over 100 million records sold, they are the best-selling instrumental group of all time!

Sundazed is proud to rightfully address the magnificent Ventures' catalog, each title has been sourced from the original Dolton and Liberty Records' reels and painstakingly mastered to sound and feel like they were originally intended. Along with precise artwork restoration on each vinyl LP title, these new Sundazed editions stand as the definitive re-releases of these monumentally important albums!

1966's Wild Things features instrumental covers of such classics as Wild Thing, Summer in the City and The Work Song, alongside Ventures originals like Wild Trip, Fuzzy and Wild, Wildcat and How Now Wild Cow.

    The Big To-Do

ATO Records is pleased to commence its relationship with the The Drive-By Truckers beginning with the incomparable rock band's label debut, The Big To-Do. The album is the band's 10th in their thirteen-year career and it features 13 new DBT tracks produced by their long time collaborator, David Barbe (Sugar, Bettye LaVette). Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley continue to handle chief songwriting duties here while bassist Shonna Tucker also contributes two originals. Brad Morgan (drums), John Neff (guitar/pedal steel), and Jay Gonzalez (keyboards) round out the current lineup.

The Big To-Do was recorded in three concentrated sessions during the first part of 2009: ten days in January, five days in March, ten days in May. That added up to 25 songs, a dozen of which sequenced into The Big To-Do. We had it mixed, mastered, and completely done, and Cooley wrote the best song that just needed to be on it, Patterson says with his raspy chuckle. This happens a lot with the Truckers, and it's always a good sign. So we went back in and recorded, mixed, and mastered 'Birthday Boy' pretty much in one fell swoop. Thirteen songs, then.
The balance of the remaining tracks, plus five more they've cut in the interim, will make up the Truckers' next album, which Patterson projects as a quieter affair.
This is, in large part, possible because the Truckers have such a long-standing relationship with David Barbe (ex-Sugar, etc.) and the Athens, GA, studio he calls Chase Park Transduction, which long ago Patterson helped to build so as to earn the right to record there.

It's gotten to where, that day of set-up time to get sounds and levels and all of that takes us about two hours, Patterson says. We can pretty much walk in the door, and we know exactly where to put everything to get that sound, so that's just one less thing to have to think about. I wanted to eliminate the distractions. That clarity of purpose translates into a delicious assortment of Trucker songs themed loosely around crime and (self-) punishment. The Wig He Made Her Wear, Patterson says, is both a true story (as seen on Court TV) and the closest he's come to making the movie he started out to make a decade or more back. The Fourth Night of My Drinking will speak for itself, and This Fucking Job (paired thematically with Cooley's wry Get Downtown) is arguably the most political song the Truckers have made since Living Bubba. Which leaves the deceptive, airy simplicity of Shonna Tucker's You Got Another and (It's Gonna Be) I Told You So to reckon with. We always knew she had that in her, Patterson says, delighted with the emergence of another strong songwriter in the band. It was never a secret. She was writing songs all along. But watching it come out has been a really amazing thing to behold.

Off the road, incidentally, didn't mean out of work. First off, there was the matter of cutting an instrumental album with the legendary Booker T, having previously served as the backing band to the equally legendary soul singer, Bettye Lavette. Potato Hole turned out all right, got a Grammy nod, and Neil Young added his touches separately even though it's pretty much a Truckers effort. But it's what they learned making Potato Hole that counts most. I think doing the Booker album really, really paid off a lot on the musical end of this record, even though stylistically it might not sound anything like that record, says Patterson, and then tells the story.

We made that record in four days, and that included the first day when it was, 'Booker, it's wonderful to meet you!' Maybe the third song we tracked just wasn't going the way he wanted it to go. We weren't quite understanding what he wanted. We were playing it right, but it wasn't right. All the sudden he just stopped the session. He gathered us around, and he told us a story about a Thanksgiving dinner, and the way it smelt in the house, he'd been on the road a long time, and they were all in - cousins and aunts he hadn't seen in several years. He said, 'It's just a day where nothing happens, but it's all really good.'

And we sat down and we played it, and we nailed it. It was like a revelation. We're a lyric-driven band, and our songs generally paint scenes and tell stories based on scenes. He instinctively knew that was how we operated. And I think it taught us a lot about how we operated. Going in and making this record, I could tell a real difference in the way the songs hold up musically. We put a little more care into that side of it than I think we ever did before because of what we learned from him.

...an absorbing hunk of smart, crunchy, guitar-driven music shot through with the bands vivid narratives, balanced storytelling, barroom punch, and Southern accents. Its a set that portrays desperate people trying to survive in these ever more desperate times, with the Truckers joyous pride and spirited attitude warding off any bitter aftertaste. Several songs are sad, and at times depressing, but the moods always point up. As it is for Bruce Springsteen, this blue-collar band not only believes in but preaches rock as salvation, and their iron-clad conviction suggests they wont have it any other way. --Bob Gendron, TONE Audio, Issue 27

    Big Smoke London Town

The Dustaphonics occupy the space where the talented few, committed and bright, stick to their guns'. Some groups are capable of doing things more intensely than others. The Dustaphonics is a group that knows how to grab your attention and get people dancing. The music is a fantastic mash-up that details their musical influences, from booze-soaked 1950s rhythm and blues, vintage stomping 'buttshaker' soul, '60s garage rock and british beat / r&b, Vegas lounge, sleazy grind instrumentals and surf guitar. And the whole deal is sealed and delivered with the spirit of '70s punk. Although the influences are vintage, there is something remarkably and distinctively fresh and progressive about their songs that takes the music beyond simple imitation and infuses it with tremendous energy and passion.

WYNONNA and her band The Big Noise, led by her husband, producer/drummer Cactus Moser, recorded the majority of the album in the sanctity of their home studio located on the family farm in Tennessee. WYNONNA has described the new album as "vintage yet modern" and a "return to the well." It's a rootsy work encompassing country, Americana, blues, soul and rock.

The process of recording WYNONNA & THE BIG NOISE with her band set her free artistically. "Like a garage band we all get in a room, basically knee to knee in a circle, and we jam until it feels amazing,"WYNONNA shares. "By the time we push record we are already jacked up because we have practiced and practiced until we know we are rocking. The end result is even better than when we started out because we're free to just play and enjoy ourselves." She adds: "I have stripped myself of all the expectations of worrying about fitting into any format and just picked songs I love. This album is my favorite thing I've done so far."

Cactus elaborates about the recording of the album. "It creates more energy, more excitement and definitely a more unique sound to have our actual band play. When you have session players you just play differently. There's less emotional input, less freedom! These guys are with us 365 days a year and that was my goal to have an actual living breathing band make a record, not just people who come in for the week and then are gone. Much better feel, much better vibe. AMEN."

The Young Big Bill Broonzy 1928-1936

Big Bill Broonzy was one of the few country blues musicians of the '20s and '30s to find success when the music evolved into an electric, urbanized form. From his initial sides with Paramount in 1928, he followed the music's development closely. Switching to electric guitar and adding drums to his music in the late 1930s, he helped pave the way for the Chicago bluesmen that followed him. Even though his music continued to contain echoes of his rural background, Broonzy's reversion to a folk-blues style (popular amongst white audiences) in the 1950s was viewed by purists as an inauthentic stance. The truth is that experts have always had a difficult time classifying Broonzy's music. Even on the early sides collected on The Young Bill Broonzy (1928-1935), the guitarist alternates between standard 12-bar fare, brisk rag numbers, guitar and piano duets, and showcases of his flatpicking prowess. Regardless of the setting, however, one thing remains certain: Broonzy's guitar skills are superb. He was an exceptional flatpicker, capable of dazzling with rapid, single note runs. Proof is provided on I Can't Be Satisfied (with Hokum Boy Frank Brasswell on second guitar) and the classic How You Want It Done? Broonzy was also criticized for relying, more than most, on the key of C (favored by ragtime musicians), though a song like Skoodle Do Do demonstrates the guitarist's ability to construct an unconventional arrangement regardless. In addition to Brasswell, Broonzy is joined by Steel Smith (six-string banjo) and Georgia Tom Dorsey (piano) on various selections. Along with the companion set Do That Guitar Rag, this is quite simply the finest collection of Broonzy's timeless, early sides available.

First Aid Kit, the Swedish folk duo composed of sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg, recorded their debut album, The Big Black & The Blue with their father at their home studio in Sweden. Released in North America in May of 2010 via Wichita Records, the effort quickly earned praise from AOL Music, NPR's All Things Considered, Nylon and SPIN and landed on numerous 2010 'Best Of' lists.

In support of the endeavor, the sisters performed at the Austin City Limits festival, CMJ Music Marathon and SXSW, toured the US twice and found time to record a Blue Series 7 of Buffie Sainte Marie's Universal Soldier with Jack White at his request for Third Man Records.

In 2011 the band toured with both Lykke Li and Bright Eyes and recorded their sophomore album, The Lions Roar with producer, Mike Mogis. Released in January of 2012, it was greeted heartily by press and radio and broke onto the Billboard 200 album chart.

Carole King is the most successful female songwriter of the 20th century, having written or co-written 118 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1955 and 1999. She also wrote 61 hits that charted in the UK, making her the most successful female songwriter on the UK singles charts between 1952 and 2005.

Carole King has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her songwriting. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be honored this way.

Simple Things by Carole King was originally released in 1977. The track Hardrock CafÉ was a big success in charts around the globe, but this album contains many more precious moments.

It's a very bold sounding album, with songs that feature a lot of dramatic instrumental references. Simple Things has a reference to her early solo work. Most notifiable is the wall of sound type pop, she often created during her Brill Building days.
Carole King seemed to have come musically full circle with this exciting album and over the years, Simple Things has become somewhat of a favorite gem amongst the many Carole King fans.

    Just One Of Those Things

Contrasting downbeat ballads with an ironic brassy, upbeat big band attitude, the ironic Cole Porter standard Just One Of Those Things sets the tone for a distinctive, pungent experience of love and disillusionment with a swing. Brilliantly backing the intimately expressive and supremely musical voice of the incomparable Nat King Cole, a big band with no strings smolders, swings, saunters, storms, sighs and sizzles with the arrangements of the distinctive Billy May. Featuring top shelf interpretations of These Foolish Things, Who's Sorry Now? The Party's Over and more, this album is among its era's finest recordings of popular music and its quality, style and spirit remains unexcelled.

Using the original 3-track session tapes from Capitol's vaults and all-analogue systems including custom headstacks, 3-track preview heads, console and monitoring chain installed at AcousTech specially for these releases, mastering engineers Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman realize the stunning beauty of these recordings. A superb track recorded for the album, You'll Never Know, which was omitted due to space constraints, is included in this double 45-RPM 180-gram album set. Included with this deluxe reissue is a striking six-panel booklet complete with rare photos, a 2,200-word essay by Jordan Taylor on the album and a 1,200-word essay by Michael Fremer about the remastering process. This truly is a no-expenses-spared project, resulting in the ultimate version of this title and a historic reissue.

Contrasting downbeat ballads with an ironic brassy, upbeat big-band attitude, the brilliant and expressive work of vocalist Nat King Cole and arranger Billy May on display here is one for the ages. 1957's Just One Of Those Things is a classic collection that perfectly captures the inherent experience of love and disillusionment. Santigold

On Santi White's debut album Santogold, the former music biz A&R and pop songwriter for hire is challenging stereotypes and playing fast and loose with genre, mashing up dub, punk and electronics to make an energetic, anger-fueled music. From the stirring new-wave pop of L.E.S Artistes to the ska-pop numbers You'll Find a Way and Say Aha, Santogold is a wildly eclectic affair that leaves you believing all the hype.

    Stigmata

The first full album from Toronto's Tre Mission, Stigmata" achieves something remarkable. He takes a genre which we think we know and which,in all honesty, he should have no right interfering with. Then here-shapes it into something entirely new. Coming over as the missing link between Wiley and Outkast, Mission elaborates the connections (via his own roots in the Caribbean) between UK grime and North American rap and makes the whole thing sound as natural, as soulful, as hard and heavy as you like.

    Two Devils Will Talk

Our favorite highlanders, The Real McKenzies, will be celebrating 2017 with a brand new album-Two Devils Will Talk- marking their 25th year as a band. There's a saying in Scotland: "Many a mickle makes a muckle." This translates to: "Many a small thing makes a big thing." This is especially true with the unique sound that The Real McKenzies' have cultivated over the years. Two Devils Will Talk is packed with fourteen rousing songs that incorporate classic punk, hard folk, acoustic and electric instruments, all weaving in the Celtic influence for which the band is known. The result of all these combined elements is one of the strongest albums in the band's entire career.

    Defying Gravity

Mr Big's new album, DEFYING GRAVITY deftly showcases that patented MR. BIG blend of crunch and melody, from the freight-train ride of opening cut Open Your Eyes to the harmony-laden wonderment of Damn I'm in Love Again to the grateful/wistful nostalgia of 1992 (recalling the days when the band was flying high atop the singles charts with their international #1 smash To Be With You) to the barn burning slide-blues closer, Be Kind. Overall, DEFYING GRAVITY is prime evidence that the only thing MR. BIG remains tethered to is their ongoing pursuit of achieving creative excellence.

Original members Eric Martin (lead vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitars), Billy Sheehan (bass) and Pat Torpey (drums) reunited with producer Kevin Elson (who was behind the boards for the band's 1989 self-titled debut, 1991's LEAN INTO IT and 1993's BUMP AHEAD) for an intensive six-day recording session in Los Angeles. While Torpey was unable to perform some of the songs on DEFYING GRAVITY due to a recent diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, Matt Starr has been filling in for him on a majority of the album. Starr also been touring with the band for the past couple of years, with Torpey able to play a couple of songs at each stop.

It was great to get back in the studio with our original producer, Kevin Elson, says guitarist Paul Gilbert. Kevin recorded all of our original classic albums from the '80s and '90s, and we immediately felt that magic chemistry with him on DEFYING GRAVITY. We basically played live in the studio. Over the years, we've all had a chance to experiment with every recording technique possible, but it's still always the best just to play together as a band. Most of my guitar solos were tracked live with the band. I've worked hard on my improvisation in the last few years, and it really paid off on this record both melodically, and on the face-melting stuff.

DEFYING GRAVITY is the follow-up to 2014's THE STORIES WE COULD TELL (Frontiers Music Srl), which Ultimate-Guitar.com described as An exceptional offering of accelerated hard rock from one of the more dominant 'supergroups' of the late 1980s, MR. BIG return with a vengeance on THE STORIES WE COULD TELL.

    White Women

We are officially on the cusp of the Canadian funk lords' fourth album's release. It's called White Women and it's a doozy. As a work of cultural theory, it posits that we are living in a post-nostalgia age. All previous genres and styles of music now coexist within a singularity of moves and gestures. (Ouch, sorry, got possessed by a cultural studies prof. for a second there but the foregoing is true of Chromeo, just FYI.) More importantly, as pure entertainment, White Women perpetuates and elevates Chromeo's existing blueprint: sexy funk, ass-targeting beats, melodic honey, and smart lyrics about the foibles of contemporary love.

Chromeo is an electrofunk duo based in Montreal, Canada composed of P-Thugg on keyboards, synthesizers, and talk box, and Dave 1 on guitar and lead vocals. The two childhood friends jokingly describe themselves as the only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture.World leaders, powerful CEOs, and assorted other fat cats could learn myriad lessons from Chromeo, but the number one tip that Dave 1 and P-Thugg have is this: Know thyself, know thy vibe, and stay thy course. The rest of the population will catch up. What this means is that Chromeo is really good at being Chromeo. The mission, the package, the vision-it's been a straight shot of pure intentionality from the jump. These Chromeo dudes? They have the whole being-these-Chromeo-dudes thing totally wired.

    Last Young Renegade

I think one of the big things as we were working on the record, was just pushing ourselves forward, All Time Low singer Alex Gaskarth explained in a recent Alternative Press interview discussing the band's new single, 'Dirty Laundry.' When we put out Don't Panic, we hit the reset button on the band and we started looking at Don't Panic as if it was our first record out of the gate as a more realized version of All Time Low.

Then [there was] Future Hearts, he continues. And that felt like we started pushing the envelope forward and trying to expand the sound and grow. 'Dirty Laundry' is a continuation of that. It's taking the idea from the last album and continuing to push it forward and explore new things.

'Last Young Renegade' is All Time Low's Fueled By Ramen debut and follow-up to the band's 2015 release, Future Hearts.

    Two Lanes of Freedom

With the release of country music icon Tim McGraw's Two Lanes of Freedom, he remains dedicated to delivering music that is innovative, heartfelt and authentic. I feel like I've progressed in my work, and I've always strived to get better, says McGraw. On my last album, I was discovering some new sounds and new things that I wanted to do, scratching the surface of the direction I wanted to head. This album was a way to reach a little further back, to all that I'd done throughout my career, and bring both sides together -- it's a combination of discovery, along with some rediscovery.

    More Monsters and Sprites EP

Ruffneck (FULL Flex) video uploaded to YouTube 12/23/2011. Over 2.6 million views in less than two weeks.

The "remix companion" to Skrillex's successful EP Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites actually features two new tracks, including the opening highlight "First of the Year," which wonderfully shifts from the cute kind of fluff Boards of Canada might appreciate to a grinding dubstep monster threatening to turn the woofers inside-out. "Ruffneck (Flex)" is a dancehall-meets-jungle slammer in that Major Lazer style, then four mixes of the previous EP's title track finish things off with the best ideas coming from remixers Phonat (bringing back the sound of IDM in its heyday) and Kaskade (turning this stuff into bleepy, blissful house music).
