    L.A. Woman: The Workshop Sessions

L.A. Woman: The Workshop Sessions features eight never-before-heard versions of songs from the Doors' 1971 album and a never-before-heard song, She Smells So Nice, which captures the band joyfully barreling through a full-throttle original before segueing into the blues standard Rock Me. As the song closes, Jim Morrison can be heard chanting, Mr. Mojo Risin, an anagram of his name that was made famous during the bridge of L.A. Woman. The track was recently discovered by producer Bruce Botnick while reviewing the L.A. Woman session tapes.

Alternate takes of The Changeling, Love Her Madly, Cars Hiss By My Window, L.A. Woman, The Wasp (Texas Radio and the Big Beat), Been Down So Long and Riders On The Storm offer a fresh view on this landmark release, which was the group's last album and sixth straight Top 10.

The studio chatter between songs is a revelation, transporting listeners to The Doors' West Hollywood rehearsal space where they recorded the album with Botnick. One segment in particular captures a fascinating moment of inspiration when Morrison suggests they add the now iconic thunderstorm sound effects to the beginning of Riders On The Storm.

This 180g 2LP edition of LA Woman: The Workshop Sessions is presented on three sides of vinyl, with the fourth side featuring a laser etching of the original Electric Woman art included with the album's original 1971 release.

    The Fat Boys

Because of their comic image, some hip-hoppers dismissed the Fat Boys as a novelty act -- some, but not many. The fact is that they were among the best and most popular rappers of the mid-1980s. Along with Run-D.M.C., L.L. Cool J, and Whodini, the Fat Boys were the finest that hip-hop's Second Generation (as it was called) had to offer. After making some noise as the Disco Three, the rotund Brooklynites changed their name to the Fat Boys in 1984 and hit big with this excellent debut album, which is humorous, wildly entertaining, and unapologetically funky.

    Ranie Burnette's Hill Country Blues

Ranie Burnette was born on July 4th, 1913 in Pleasant Grove, MS, located in Panola County. While he was known to have played local dances and juke joints in the hill country of North Mississippi during the 1940's and 50's, competing with the likes of Fred McDowell, no known recordings of Ranie were made until the 70's and early 80's while he was living in Senatobia.

During that time he recorded two sides for a regional 45 single and was later recorded by Leo Bruin, both in Senatobia and during a trip Ranie made to the Netherlands. Some of those recordings appear on the Swingmaster CD Going Down South, along with tracks by harmonica player Johnny Woods and R.L. Burnside, whom Ranie mentored and often played with.

Burnette's music, like the aforementioned artists, is strongly rooted in the rhythmic tradition of the fife and drum bands from the region, which you'll hear on this 11-song collection, also recorded by Leo Bruin. Ranie Burnette died in Memphis, TN, on January 23, 2000 and is buried in the cemetery at Ebeneezer Missionary Baptist Church in Como, MS.

    Children

A long time ago I used to hear spiritual singers singing beautiful songs and I wanted to be a singer too. I first started my musical career by singing in small local groups in my hometown of Memphis, TN. In the year 1968, I came to Seattle, Washington and started singing with local groups but failed to find the one that stable enough to record so I decided to cut an album by myself. The music was written and produced by myself who, except for the drum parts, done the entire record. - Famous L. Renfroe

Note: All cables in our Bridges & Falls Series place their left and right channels in a single jacket, and feature our Asymmetrical Double-Balanced geometry with separate high-quality positive and negative conductors. This design allows for a thin, flexible, and uniquely versatile high-performance cable that can be terminated with a variety of today's connections, including 3.5mm (male or female), DIN, and RCA. In Bridges & Falls, you'll find better metals and more sophisticated technologies - including Air-Tube insulation, Dielectric-Bias System, and Noise-Dissipation System - at lower prices than ever before. Do keep in mind, however, that, by necessity, the plugs on Bridges & Falls cables are fairly close together. If the L and R inputs of your components are more than 3 (7.6cm) apart, please consider models from our Rivers or Elements Series.

Spanning a creek and a formidable travel-impeding canyon, the Bixby Creek Bridge compliments and counterpoints the majestic beauty of California's spectacular coastline just north of Big Sur, 190km (120 miles) south of San Francisco. As an integral part of this stretch of landscape, the bridge has been featured in numerous TV shows and movies, and is seen on travel posters all over the world

SOLID PERFECT-SURFACE COPPER+ (PSC+) CONDUCTORS: Perfect-Surface Copper+ has an astonishingly smooth and pure surface. Proprietary metal-processing technology protects the wire's surface at every stage of drawing and fabrication. When high-purity low-oxide copper is kept as soft, pure and smooth as possible, it becomes a wonderfully low-distortion PSC+ conductor. PSC+ is manufactured by applying the same exceptional technology to an ultra-pure copper. The resulting sound quality is even more focused and simply less in the way. For over 30 years AudioQuest has pioneered the use of superior metals; yet even we were surprised by the huge leap in performance made possible with Perfect-Surface Technology. PSC+ simply outperforms all previously available copper metals at any price. All of Big Sur's conductors are solid. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty, harsh sound. Solid conductors are fundamental toward achieving Big Sur's very clean sound.

FOAMED-POLYETHYLENE INSULATION: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Big Sur uses air-filled Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation on both conductors because air absorbs next to no energy and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.

METAL-LAYER NOISE-DISSIPATION SYSTEM (NDS): 100% shield coverage is easy. Preventing captured RF Interference from modulating the equipment's ground reference requires AQ's Noise-Dissipation System. Noise-Dissipation System prevents a significant amount of RFI from reaching the equipment's ground plane.

ASYMMETRICAL DOUBLE-BALANCED GEOMETRY: Purpose designed for single-ended applications, Asymmetrical Double-Balanced Geometry offers a relatively lower impedance on the ground for a richer, and more dynamic experience. While many single-ended cable designs use a single path for both the ground and the shield, Double-Balanced designs separate the two for cleaner, quieter performance.

COLD-WELDED, GOLD-PLATED PURE PURPLE COPPER TERMINATIONS: This plug design allows for a connection devoid of solder, which is a common source of distortion. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of machinability. Purple Copper offers a cleaner, clearer sound than the nickel-plated or OFHC metals commonly found in competing manufacturers' plugs.

Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites EP

Previously the frontman for L.A. post-hardcore outfit From First to Last, Sonny Moore continues to develop his unforeseen dubstep tendencies with the second EP under his Skrillex alias, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. This surprising electro reinvention still throws a few bones to his previous metalhead crowd, with the virtually demonic basslines of Scatta, a blisteringly dirty 140-bpm anthem featuring the suitably breakneck-speed MC skills of U.K. grime collective Foreign Beggars, and the sinister lyrics of the Daft Punk-esque robotic rave of Kill EVERYBODY (I want to kill everybody in the world) just as unsettling as anything the two albums recorded with his former band had to offer.

But perhaps inspired by the move to Deadmau5's Mau5trap label, its nine tracks present a more chilled-out, melodic, and even playful side to the eclectic producer. With You, Friends (an ambient reworking of the closing track to his My Name Is Skrillex EP) is a slow-burning epic that displays his penchant for chopped-up vocal samples amidst some lilting piano chords, swirling proggy electro riffs, and hypnotic house beats; All I Ask of You echoes the lush techno of his new boss, with its warm layered synths, ethereal vocals (courtesy of Penny), and Euro-trance hooks; while even the heavier moments are interspersed with lighter touches, such as the ingenious sample of YouTube sensation speedstackinggirl (Yes! Oh My Gosh) on the towering beats and distorted bass of the title track and the Space Invaders-style bleeps, helium vocals, and stadium rock handclaps on the chaotic electro-clash of Rock n' Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain).

The three remixes from Noisia, Bare Noize, and Zedd are solid if unspectacular, with only the latter's chilled-out version of the title track providing anything wildly different from the originals. But the invention showcased on the first six bass-heavy anthems is more than enough to suggest that the U.S. has found someone who is capable of selling the dubstep sound back to its South London homeland.

    Nothing Can Hurt Me

Limited Edition - on Translucent Yellow Vinyl

2011's RSD saw an Omnivore vinyl reissue of the "test pressing" of Big Star's 1975 swansong Third, meticulously recreated right down to the master tape box and tracking sheets. Early in 2012, the band's frontman Alex Chilton was celebrated via the label's release of Free Again: The 1970 Sessions. Now, Omnivore is handling the soundtrack to the Magnolia Pictures documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, and it will premiere as a RSD-exclusive yellow double vinyl edition limited to 4,000 copies worldwide. The 2012 SXSW Film Festival selection tells the story of the ultimate cult band, a group that never saw any considerable commercial success but influenced an entire generation of pop musicians. Nothing Can Hurt Me chronicles Alex Chilton's ascent to fame

As lead singer of The Box Tops through the recording of Big Star's three albums, to the 1978 death of Chilton's collaborator Chris Bell.

The 21 previously unreleased tracks on the soundtrack's four vinyl sides encompass vintage unissued mixes, alternate takes, demos, and new mixes made for the motion picture of Big Star, Chilton and Bell songs. The soundtrack includes 21 previously unheard period mixes, new mixes made specifically for the film, and alternate takes and demos. For the limited, first-edition RSD pressing, the 2-LP set will be released on 180-gram RTI HQ translucent yellow vinyl, with mastering by Larry Nix at L. Nix Mastering. The project was overseen by the documentary's executive producer, John Fry, at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis.

    Guitar Freakout

The late L.A. session guitar genius Jerry Cole has long been worshipped for his work with everyone from the Beach Boys and the Byrds to Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley and by surf fans as the leader of the Spacemen. But unbeknownst to many, Cole was also the driving force behind the Animated Egg, a fictitious band whose lone, self-titled 1967 LP is one of the greatest psychedelic exploitation records ever to hit the budget bins of U.S. chain storesand eventually the want lists of big-spending DJs and collectors.

Comprised of splashy, fuzz-drenched Now Sound instrumental groovers, The Animated Egg easily lives up to both the eBay hype and the promise of its evocative track titles: Sure Listic, Sock It My Way, Sippin and Trippin, andyes indeedI Said, She Said, Ah Cid. In addition to the rare self-titled LP by the Animated Egg, this collection also includes cuts by other related Cole projects: the Projection Company, the Generation Gap, T. Swift & the Electric Bag, and the Stone Canyon Rock Group. Sourced from the original analog masters, Sundazeds glorious CD and high-definition double-LP vinyl editions of this hallowed prize are a must for turntablists and brain-trippers alike.

    Eight And A Half

Justin Peroff of Broken Social Scene plus Dave Hamelin and Liam O'Neil of The Stills equals Eight and a Half. When Broken Social Scene first emerged out of Toronto 10 years ago, a great deal of the band's success was attributed to the fact that most of its individual members had ties to other bands, or boasted established solo careers. Peroff, the band's drummer since 2000, was not without extracurricular pursuits of his own (acting, DJing, party promotion), but had never released music outside of the BSS banner. By 2009, the urge to explore something new was proving ever more impossible to suppress.

Hamelin and O'Neil were old friends of Peroff's, Broken Social Scene and The Stills had shared stages as far back as 2003, but they weren't necessarily the most logical choice of collaborators: after all, Peroff was splitting his time between his temporary home in Los Angeles and recording sessions in Chicago for Broken Social Scene's Forgiveness Rock Record, while Hamelin and O'Neil were in the thick of touring for The Stills' 2008 album, Oceans Will Rise, and living in their native Montreal when off the road.

However, over the course of several phone calls and emails, the trio realized they all shared a desire to create music that was distinctively different than the big-tent anthems their primary bands were known for, so much so that Peroff was willing to spend much of 2009 hopping back and forth between L.A., Chicago and Montreal to get this new, more electronically focused project off the ground, if only in fits and starts.

What a difference a year makes, fast forward to the end of 2010 and Peroff was calling Toronto home once again, after Broken Social Scene completed its marathon Forgiveness Rock Record tour. And fortuitously enough, O'Neil and Hamelin had also become fellow residents, albeit for markedly different reasons: the former was hired to engineer Metric's follow-up to Fantasies at the band's Toronto-based Giant Studios, while the latter relocated after his girlfriend scored a new job in the city. O'Neil and Hamelin also suddenly found themselves with a lot of spare time on their hands: following a fall 2010 tour with Kings of Leon, The Stills had unceremoniously disbanded.

And so the conditions were in place to elevate Eight and a Half from sideline recording project to a primary concern for those involved. And each member seized the opportunity to reinvent himself: where Peroff's steady back beat has always provided the solid foundation atop which Broken Social Scene could freely experiment, with Eight and a Half his drumming is thoroughly deconstructed, as reliant on electronic programming and looped breaks as live performance.

O'Neil, traditionally a piano and horn player, focused on coaxing strange sounds and eerie ambience out of synthesizers and samplers. And Hamelin, who attempted a more rootsy, conversational style of singing as The Stills' secondary vocalist, pushed himself to croon in a higher register, and adopt a more confessional, emotionally naked mode of songwriting to better complement the minimal, mechanized productions.

Though Eight and a Half's formation precedes The Stills' dissolution, it's tempting to interpret these songs from the melancholic desolation of "Scissors," to where-did-it-all-go-wrong self-examination of "Go Ego," to the turn-a-new-leaf pledge "The Turn Around," as a direct response to their demise. But the vulnerability, doubt and resignation embedded in Hamelin's voice and words are easily transferrable to anyone who's invested years of their life into something special only to watch it vanish in an instant.

And Hamelin's recovery process, as well as Eight and a Half's own evolution from piecemeal recording project into proper flesh-and-blood band, is mirrored in the album's sequential shift from darkness to light: what begins as a chilly, claustrophobic and insular experience gradually opens up into a widescreen, kaleidoscopic splendor, spanning the mountainous surge of "Took A Train to India," the exuberant digital psychedelia of "Two Points" and the climactic/ecstatic curtain closer "Oh, My Head."

    Live In San Francisco 1971

The closing of the Fillmore West (actually, the Carousel Ballroom) put a big dent in the 'City By the Bay'. This performance was taken from the closing concerts for the venue. The list of bands that Bill Graham didn't want was also big, and the Flamin' Groovies were on it, for years. Our first manager was Bill's right-hand man and when he quit working for Bill to manage the Flamin' Groovies this did not sit well with Bill, so the Groovies went up and down in Bill's eyes. So it came as a big surprise when we discovered he wanted us for this big and important event, to participate in a series of shows leading up to the closing of this legendary venue. I remember the show well. The difference in playing this gig as opposed to the Whisky-A-Go-Go in L.A. was like night and day. At the Whisky, we were the house band (two summers in a row); att the Fillmore, we were up for grabs. Oh yeah, this was our last show with my good buddy, Roy Loney.

This Vanguard blockbuster recording was, for the first time ever, transferred from the original three track analog master tape. The sound is big and glorious and required almost no equalization which is quite rare for classical recordings. The Milhaud selection features a vocal quartet which is superbly intergrated sonically into the performance. People in L.A. are content to do nothing and stare at
the void Pacific - DH Lawrence

    Pioneering electronic musician/DJ/producer Moby
releases his 13th album More Songs About The
Apocalypse, his 2nd as Moby & The Void Pacific
Choir. As with much of Moby's output during his
nearly three-decade-long career, it's not surprising
that a spiritual & political questioning underpins the
nine songs comprising latest full length album. In
    characteristically iconoclastic fashion, the weighty
themes explored throughout More Fast Songs About
The Apocalypse find expression as the most direct
& personal music Moby has ever created. "That

Over 50,000 people have bungee jumped off the Victoria Falls Bridge, thrilling to a drop of 111 metres (364 ft) in front of spectacular Victoria Falls. The bridge crosses the Zambezi River, which is the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia in South-Eastern Africa. While neither the highest nor widest falls in the world, Victoria Falls is the largest sheet of falling water in the world with a width of 1,708 meters (5,604 ft) and height of 108 meters (354 ft).

All of Victoria's conductors are solid. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty, harsh sound. Solid conductors are fundamental toward achieving Victoria's very clean sound.

POLYETHYLENE AIR-TUBE INSULATION: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. All of Victoria's conductors use PE Air-Tube Insulation because air absorbs next to no energy, and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. PE Air-Tube Insulation causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.

DIELECTRIC-BIAS SYSTEM (DBS, US Pat #s 7,126,055 & 7,872,195 B1): All insulation slows down the signal on the conductor inside. When insulation is unbiased, it slows down parts of the signal differently, a big problem for very time-sensitive multi-octave audio. AudioQuest's DBS creates a strong, stable electrostatic field which saturates and polarizes (organizes) the molecules of the insulation. This minimizes both energy storage in the insulation and the multiple nonlinear time-delays that occur. Sound appears from a surprisingly black background with unexpected detail and dynamic contrast. The DBS battery packs will last for years. A test button and LED allow for the occasional battery check.

CARBON-BASED 3-LAYER NOISE-DISSIPATION SYSTEM (NDS): 100% shield coverage is easy. Preventing captured RF Interference from modulating the equipment's ground reference requires AQ's Noise-Dissipation System. Metal and Carbon-Loaded synthetics prevent most RFI from reaching the equipment's ground plane.

COLD-WELDED, DIRECT-SILVER PLATED PURE RED COPPER TERMINATIONS: This plug design allows for a connection devoid of solder, which is a common source of distortion. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of machinability. Red Copper offers a cleaner, clearer sound over nickel-plated or OFHC metals commonly found in competing manufacturers' plugs. Direct-Silver Plating offers one more important step toward greater clarity and doing no harm to the signal.

The Yosemite Valley in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains is world famous for its beauty, for naturalist John Muir's work to preserve the Valley, and for Ansel Adams astonishing black & white photographs ("Yosemite and the Range of Light"). Like other glacier-carved fjord-type valleys, such as the famous fjords of Western Norway, the Yosemite Valley is graced with gorgeous waterfalls along both sides. Giant Sequoia trees, the largest trees in the world, further enhance Yosemite as possibly the most beautiful of all US National Parks.

Venezuela's Angel Falls is the world's highest waterfall, with a height of 979 meters (3,212 ft) and a plunge of 807 meters (2,648 ft). The Spanish name "Salto Ángel," and the English name "Angel Falls," come from Jimmie Angel's surname. Angel was a US aviator who was the first to fly over the falls. In addition to its singular status as a waterfall, and the above-and-beyond status of angels, pure-silver Angel cable gets its name in part because Ag is the chemical name for silver.

SOLID 100% PERFECT-SURFACE SILVER (PSS) CONDUCTORS: Perfect-Surface Technology applied to extreme-purity silver provides unprecedented clarity and dynamic contrast. Solid conductors prevent strand interaction, a major source of cable distortion. Extremely high-purity Perfect-Surface Silver minimizes distortion caused by the grain boundaries which exist within any metal conductor, nearly eliminating harshness and greatly increasing clarity compared to OFHC, OCC, 8N and other coppers.

    Genesis

L.A. rapper Domo Genesis has released his official debut album Genesis. Despite big time appearances from Wiz, Juicy J, Anderson .Paak and more, the former Odd Future rapper manages to put his own personality on center stage for his first attempt at a major label project.

The first single from the album, "Dapper" with Anderson .Paak, showed a new, groovier side of Domo that wasn't always apparent on his previous tapes. In the YouTube description of the video he wrote, "Thanks for the love, its been awhile but im finally ready to give my honest self."

Songs like "Awkward Groove" and "Wanderer" show his vulnerable charm. Coming from the violent explosion that was Odd Future, MCs like Doms and Earl have been adjusting to the aftermath in their own unique ways.

The production is especially lush and enveloping. Tyler produced "Go (Gas)" and perhaps more, but it's more impressive that he's been able to build a nice brand for Odd Future Records with himself, Domo and The Internet.

    Dig Your Roots

Known for their record-breaking tracks, undeniable energy and all around good vibes, FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE will release DIG YOUR ROOTS on Big Machine Label Group. The award-winning duo's highly anticipated third studio album uncovers pieces of their lineage along with an evolved creativity.

"Our album cover says it all," shares Brian Kelley. "Tyler and I are continuing to grow musically and personally. We really wanted this album to reflect who we are and our lives in this moment, but also where we came from."

Tyler Hubbard adds, "we both started out playing guitar, singing in church and writing songs so we wanted to let fans see our foundation - a deeper side to us. We couldn't have picked a more fitting title or image for DIG YOUR ROOTS."

Award-winning producer Joey Moi, who has been at the helm for FGL's entire discography to date, once again joined the pair for DIG YOUR ROOTS. The duo penned over half of the new music, further depicting an evolution in both of their life journeys. FGL's soaring single "H.O.L.Y." sets the tone for the new project and is "the right balance of change and continuity, and the mix of love and spirituality" (Billboard).

    The Unissued Capitol Album

Jim Ford's previously unissued second album and follow-up to the country-soul classic Harlan County, as it was intended to be heard, restored and re-mastered from the original master tapes in magnificent full stereo high-fidelity sound. Jim Ford was Sly Stone's best friend and Nick Lowe's biggest musical influence. Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack and The Temptations have all recorded his songs. But after just one mythical album, Harlan County, in 1969, he disappeared. Many tried to find Jim Ford without any success, until Swedish music journalist and devoted fan L-P Anderson found him living in a northern California trailer park in 2006. Ford's modest residence contained a mountain of old master tapes and demos. Anderson befriended Ford and heard a story that even Hollywood scriptwriters would have said was too impossible to be true. Before leaving California, Anderson promised he'd get some of the tapes out on record. A compilation, The Sounds Of Our Time, appeared on Bear Family Records in 2007 and became a big success. The record spent four weeks on the Swedish charts and received worldwide critical acclaim. Ford was overwhelmed with the positive response but unfortunately he passed away in November of 2007 at the age of 66, just before the launch of Bear Family's second Jim Ford compilation, Point Of No Return.

This self titled album was originally meant to be released by Capitol Records in October of 1970, but Ford fell out with the company's executives before the project was manufactured. Apparently, he got $20,000 and the master tapes. He also got strict orders never to show his face inside the Capitol building again. And now for the first time, here's Jim Ford's second album on 180g Import Vinyl LP.

    Coast To Coast

The River City Tanlines (named in honor of the farmer tan) is a three-piece rock band from Memphis, TN. Principle songwriter and hardest working woman in the music business, Alicja Trout, is a veteran of countless noteworthy punk/indie bands over the years, including The Clears, The Lost Sounds and her current projects Alicja-pop, MouseRocket and Black Sunday. Likewise the powerful rhythm section of Terrence Bishop and John Bonds are no strangers to the scene either, having played together behind such names as Jack Oblivion, R.L. Burnside, Jim Dandy & Black Oak Arkansas, and Monsieur Jeffrey Evans.

In 2009 the River City Tanlines appeared in Craig Brewer's (Hustle and Flow, Black Snake Moan) web-series Five Dollar Cover for MTV, and performed I'm Your Negative in a rollerderby fight scene. They also have a song (Black Knight, a crowd favorite at live shows) featured in the EA Sports video game Skate. Together since late 2004, the band has toured extensively in North America and Europe playing clubs and festivals, and has ten releases on various record labels around the world. Their last album I'm Your Negative was released in 2006 by Dirtnap Records out of Portland, OR.

This, their newest offering, Coast To Coast, was produced by Bruce Watson (Hasil Adkins, T-Model Ford, John Paul Keith) at his Dial Back Sound Studios and will be released on Big Legal Mess Records/Fat Possum. The 10-song set runs the gamut from the galloping opener I Don't Get It to the poppy Stop My Heart to the Ramones-esque Pretty Please and the psyche rock of Dark Matter, all adding up to what is sure to become another Memphis classic!

Plus performances by SIR ELTON JOHN, TRENT REZNOR, ALEX TURNER (Arctic Monkeys), JAKE SHEARS (Scissor Sisters)

Recorded by MARK RANKIN (Adele, "Rolling In The Deep")

For their first album in six years, Joshua Homme's
mighty Queens Of The Stone Age called back classic
members Dave Grohl and Joey Castillo on drums,
and Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan on vocals. In
addition, some big names came in to perform:

Lavelle (U.N.K.L.E.) and more. Of course the current
lineup of Troy Van Leeuwen, Michael Shuman and
    Dean Fertita also feature throughout.

...Like Clockwork contains Homme's most intense,
personal and beautiful songwriting to date. While
the thunder of Queens past is still evident (especially
in lead single "My God Is The Sun") there are a
number of gorgeous ballads - meditations on time
passing, the struggle to create art, and the nearness
    of mortality.

The music lives up to the album's lyrical and
conceptual ambitions, with some of Homme's finest
guitar work to date, at times recalling past greats
such as Brian May or George Harrison, at other times
uniquely his own. The rhythm section starts and
stops on a dime, and in some of the more complex
songs, the ensemble playing is virtuosic - but never
    sterile.

The striking album artwork, imagery and intro
animations are by young British artist Boneface,

    Ravel: Ma Mere l'Oye, Tzigane

    180g Play Backwards

When thinking about the colours and forms that are found in Impressionist paintings, one name comes to mind when your mind wanders to music: Ravel. In your mind's eye you can conjure up the fine brush strokes, small colourful areas and figures, little flashes of light, and delicate pastel tones. To incorporate all these perceptive notions in a recorded medium and to develop them like a good wine is an affair of the heart for the Tacet label. By using both historical and the very finest analogue recording equipment, the experts from Stuttgart create LPs of the highest quality that have never been produced in this way anywhere else in the world. But the dedicated musicians too - a far cry from the worshipped big earners in the business - perform superlatively. Seldom has one heard such finely chiselled sound colouring as that of Carlo Rizzi and the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest in the enchanting miniature Ma Mère l'Oye. One can almost feel the impressionistic, silvery waves of the strings and the swirling opposing winds. Above all this one can hear Gordan Nikolic's singing violin solos, which can be clearly perceived even in celestial heights and thus remain a crux of the composition.

Also on this recording is a velvety, warm orchestral version of the elegiac Pavane pour une Infante dÉfunte. As in the Tacet LP L207, which has been released by Speakers Corner, this record has been cut using the 'play-backwards technique' and guarantees the very best sound.
