Live At The Carousel Ballroom 1968

Starting in 1966, Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the
Holding Company became accidental architects of what
would be known as the San Francisco Sound. During that
important cultural watershed quaintly referred to as the
Summer of Love, they provided an unruly, party-tastic link
between the cool, cerebral music of the Jefferson Airplane
and the psychedelic covenant of the Grateful Dead.

LIVE AT THE CAROUSEL BALLROOM 1968 is a previously
unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and
the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, recorded
by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a/k/a Bear,
who supervised the mastering of this release before his
fatal car accident on March 12, 2011. The release of the
album marks the one-year anniversary of his passing and is
    dedicated to Bear.

This is Bears unique vision how he heard the band live,
and how he wanted to transmit it. From the very speciï¬c
(non)stereo mix, to the cover artwork he commissioned
from Stanley Mouse, to the liner notes written by those
who knew Bear best, this truly is Bears presentation of this phenomenal band and inspirational music.

Janis Joplin's raw, bluesy and soulful delivery launched a short but powerful singing career. Although she originated from Texas, Joplin rose to stardom in psychedelic San Francisco in the late 60's. She had a love-hate relationship with the city: its beat & hippie community provided great musicians and a receptive audience, but the city's prevailing drug culture unfortunately caused her early demise.

Her studio debut with backing band Big Brother And The Holding Company from 1967 showed a band on its way to greatness. Janis uplifts the loose and live sounding blues rock on Big Brother with scorching vocal performances. Minor hits Bye Bye Baby and Down On Me, Big Brother And The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin shows a band on its way to greatness. It's the starting point for anyone exploring the Joplin legacy!

Quintessential 1968 Record a Potent Mix of Psychedelia, Blues, Folk, and Rock: Janis Joplin Delivers Cathartic Vocal Performance on Major-Label Debut That Includes Powerhouse Piece of My Heart

Mobile Fidelity 45RPM Vinyl Pressing Touts Superb Spaciousness, Punchiness, Dynamics, and Texture: Cheap Thrills Sounds As Close to Live as Music Gets and Features Robert Crumb Artwork

In many facets, Big Brother and the Holding Company's Cheap Thrills is the quintessential album to spring from the outcome of the Summer of Love. Best known as Janis Joplin's major-label debut, the 1968 set arrived when the countercultural movement was in full swing and before co-optation, drugs, and violence signaled the fall of the era. Ranked #338 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, it puts a female singer in the prominent position traditionally given to a male and showcases a band pouring a potent cocktail of fiery psychedelic, blues, and folk sounds that informed the unfettered creativity of the San Francisco scene. Produced by John Simon, Cheap Thrills also features one of the most iconic and elaborate album covers in history. Now, thanks to Mobile Fidelity, the instantly identifiable effort also possesses sonics equivalent to its visual and musical status.

Cut at 45RPM and pressed on dead-quiet vinyl at RTI, the iconic audiophile label's analog reissue intensifies the quintet's storied sophomore effort. Due to the wider grooves, this pressing benefits from increased spaciousness, punchiness, energy, pacing, and dynamics. Joplin's hurricane-force singing reverberates with texture, grittiness, and volume. An arresting array of instrumental colors and tones comes on with clearer separation and depth. While previous pressings find the band and Joplin's voice in competition with one another for room, both emerge as distinct entities. Always noted for its rawness, Cheap Thrills sounds as close to live as it gets, an unadulterated portrait of nervy rock n' roll delivered with exuberant enthusiasm and all-out determination. This is music at is most visceral.

Having drawn national attention for their legendary performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967, Big Brother and Joplin faced huge expectations to deliver a studio set that would convey their onstage vibrancy and potency. Cheap Thrills does this and more, becoming one of 1968's most commercially successful releases that remained on the charts the week Joplin announced her separation from the ensemble. Contrary to popular belief, only one of the album's songs, Ball and Chain, was recorded live. Everything else owes to the unhinged, spirit-elevating performances and true collaboration between vocalist and band that manifests itself throughout the record's 37-minute-plus running time. Merging biker-babe ruggedness with wounded-bird poignancy, Joplin's expressive belting, mega-watt moaning, and sensitive crooning take center stage. Yet her bandmates match every step with explosive rhythms, heavy guitar-driven blues, and assertive solos that take inspiration from free-form jazz.

Indeed, Cheap Thrills still exhilarates not only due to Joplin's almighty singing but because of boundary-shredding arrangements that reflect the period's anything-is-possible mindset. More so than any other musicians Joplin encountered, the members of Big Brother pushed limits on convention via soirees into acid-dipped psychedelia and its orbiting sonic galaxies. Together, they aim and achieve an aural mythos that makes a permanent connection between artist and audience by way of eliminating traditional divisions. Such communal power is evident on the mind-bending version of Big Mama Thornton's Ball and Chain and insistent, sinewy I Need a Man to Love. It's also obvious during quieter moments, whether the tripped-out, twisted, and curvaceous contours of George and Ira Gershwin's Summertime or restrained, throwback acoustic blues of Turtle Blues.

Yes, Joplin presents - and rallies against - loneliness and desperation in a cathartic language few had heard before or since. What's even more significant is the fearlessness, toughness, synergy, and sexual danger pulsing through every song, including the take-on-all-comers challenge Piece of My Heart, which the collective attacks with career-making ferocity. Like Robert Crumb's daring pop-art illustrations that grace the cover, they simultaneously lure and dare the listener to enter a space where outsiders run free and where outlaws are heard above the mainstream din.

Big Brother & The Holding Company

Six months before becoming an overnight sensation following a blistering set at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Big Brother and the Holding Company was an unknown group from San Francisco playing a month-long Chicago club engagement. Mutual freind, Chet Helms introduced the band to singer, Janis Joplin and after their gig was cut short, Big Brother and Janis avoided returning to California, signed with the small, struggling jazz label Mainstream Records and cut the three-day recording session that makes up this, their self-titled debut in December of 1966. The set mostly consisted of original songs, with the exception of New York City street musician, Moondog's All Is Loneliness and a more secular arrangement of the gospel standard Down on Me. Despite Joplin's fiery singing style, Big Brother was still the kind of democracy in which Joplin shared vocals with Sam Andrew on the trippy Light Is Faster Than Sound and the more soulful duet Call on Me. Most of the record features Joplin reaching back and channeling her hero, Big Maybelle on songs like the brassy Women Is Losers and the no-nonsense Intruder.

Big Brother & The Holding Company

Sundazed presents the high-definition vinyl reissue of the ultra-rare mono edition of Big Brother & the Holding Companys 1967 debut! Besides being the album that introduced the world to Janis Joplin, Big Brother & the Holding Companys first release stands as one of the classic recordings of 60s rock. Joplin had added her fiery wail to the archetypal Haight-Ashbury acid-rock quintet only months before it entered the studio to make the album, and for the sessions she shares vocal duties with bassist Peter Albin and guitarist Sam Andrew. But, thanks to the LPs raging single, Down on Me, it was immediately clear to radio audiences of the time that the Texas-born singer was a new force to be reckoned with.

In addition to Joplins inimitable blues cry, Big Brothers other key strength lies in the scraping, distorted guitars of Sam Andrew and James Gurley, which are in heavy abundance on such choice cuts as the trippy Light is Faster Than Sound, the punkish Women is Losers, and the groups fuzzy, droning remake of Moondogs All is Loneliness. Cut from the original mono masters, this Sundazed edition adds two scarce single-only sides.

    I Remember Brother Ray

David 'Fathead' Newmanï's warm tone, occasionally terse phrasing, and always heartfelt delivery placed him in high demand by artists as diverse as B.B. King, Herbie Mann, Jane Monheit, and Gregg Allman. With over twenty recordings to his name, I Remember Brother Ray stands as an understated highlight, a record that doesn't so much jump out at you as it does gently sidle up beside you and ingratiates itself with its warmth and affability. Newman got his first big break with Ray Charles in the early '50s, playing in his band from '54 through '64 and subsequently making numerous guest appearances over the years. And so Newman entered the studio of another legend, engineer Rudy Van Gelder just two months after Charles' death to record I Remember Brother Ray, a tribute to the jazzier side of a man who regarded himself as a jazz singer anyway.

The record evokes the ambience of a smoky bar in the early hours of the morning. Newman assembled a quintet as comfortable with the tender balladry of Georgia on My Mind as it is the soul-drenched blues of Drown in My Tears. Charles believed that the ability to play jazz permits the ability to cross over into other genres, and the playing on I Remember Brother Ray clearly supports his conviction.

While there were quite a few Ray Charles tributes, few equaled I Remember Brother Ray for its grace, integrity, honesty, and pure connection to the true essence of Charles' legacy.

    The Big Lebowski Soundtrack

The Coen Brothers' 1998 film noir spoof, The Big Lebowski, with Jeff Bridges' shaggy title character, "The Dude," has gained a fervent following, complete with annual conventions, where phrases like "The Dude will abide" have entered the vernacular. With the Coens' typical care and love of music they demonstrated throughout their diverse career, The Big Lebowski soundtrack has become just as much of a cult classic as the film itself. Album highlights include songs accompanying a trio of bowling scenes: Bob Dylan's New Morning track, "The Man In Me" over the title credits, the Busby Berkeleyinfluenced psychedelia of Kenny Rogers and the First Edition's "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition is In") and the Gypsy Kings' redefining take on the Eagles' "Hotel California," as John Turturro licks his bowling ball. The most groove-oriented act in the mid-'90s female-fronted electronica crowd, Morcheeba rely on the sweet, fluid vocals of Skye Edwards and a laid-back mix of fusion, funk, and blues produced by brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey on beats/scratches and guitar/keyboards, respectively. The soundtrack to Tim Burton's neo classic moving picture Big Fish (2003), starring Ewan McGregor, Helena Bonham Carter, Marion Cotillard and Jessica Lange, collects classic Pop songs and a score of longtime collaborator Danny Elfman (Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mars Attacks! and others).

The 2LP soundtrack also contains a new song from Pearl Jam, specifically written for the movie: Man of the Hour. The soundtrack's Pop songs range from Bing Crosby's early-'30s Jazz hit Dinah to the '50s nostalgia of Buddy Holly's Everyday and Elvis Presley's All Shook Up, right up to the '60s and '70s recollections of Canned Heat's Let's Work Together and Ramblin' Man by the Allman Brothers Band.

Big Day In A Small Town

Four-time GRAMMY nominee and critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Brandy Clark is following up her 2013 smash debut album 12 Stories with the release of Big Day in a Small Town, to be released on Warner Bros. Records. With "Girl Next Door serving as the first single, Big Day in a Small Town is Clark's first major-label album. Big Day was produced by Jay Joyce.

"When I made 12 Stories, I think my dreams were a lot more realistic, in that I didn't expect a lot to happen... then it did," Clark says. "This time, my dreams are very much what they were when I was going to Vince Gill and Patty Loveless concerts and decided I was going to move to Nashville. Right now, my dreams are as big as when I was naïve enough to really dream them."

Clark is featured in The Outlaws issue of Garden & Gun with Matt Hendrickson raving, Big Day in a Small Town has the same biting wit as her 2013 debut 12 Stories, but it's an even richer collection of songs, with a life-in-the-middle-of-nowhere thread running through the album.

Big Day in a Small Town tells the stories of the football star, the father, the homecoming queen, and the hairdresser because those are the stories and people that Clark grew up knowing. "All these songs, there's some little truth in them, somewhere, that resonates with me or that is about me," she confesses.

12 Stories was featured on Best of lists from New York Magazine, NPR, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The New York Post and The Boston Globe in 2013. That same year, The Los Angeles Times called it "the country debut of the year.

We argue sometimes, but we never argue about Big Bill Broonzy, says Dave Alvin when explaining why he and brother Phil, who havent made an album together in almost 30 years, were inspired to record Common Ground: Dave Alvin + Phil Alvin Play and Sing the Songs of Big Bill Broonzy set for June 3 release on Yep Roc. The Alvin brothers, who founded seminal early LA punk roots band The Blasters in 1979, have shared a fascination with Broonzy since childhood. After an illness nearly took Phils life in 2012, they resolved to return to the studio and pay tribute to the blues legend. Common Ground includes 12 songs that capture a 30-year cross section of Broonzys canon, performed by the Alvins in their signature style of rollicking roots and stomping country blues.

I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama

Sourced from the Original Masters, on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl with Jacket Meticulously Recreated from the Original Art

Janis Joplin decided to make a sharp turn after Cheap Thrills, and abandoned her previous band Big Brother And The Holding Company. Her new band, the Kozmic Blues Band provided a tighter, more soulful approach to the blues rock 'Big Brother' is known for. By going solo, Joplin made a crucial point: she's got soul for miles on end.

Featuring a horn section and a stronger emphasis on organ, I Got Them Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama! yielded soul burners Try (Just A Little Bit Harder), Work Me Lord and As Good As You've Been To This World, as well as slower tracks like Maybe and Kozmic Blues. Hearing is believing!

    Deep Tissue

Started by Kid Millions and Bobby Matador of Oneida, People of the North is an ongoing but sporadic outgrowth of that restlessly experimental Brooklyn assemblage. It has always included Kid and Bobby, and usually other members of Oneida as well. While there are no clearly defined boundaries separating POTn from Oneida, it might be fair to say that the music is more staunchly devoted to minimalism, repetition, improvisation, and sternness than the wide-ranging efforts of the big brother band.

    Live At The Carousel Ballroom

Big Brother & The Holding Company might best be known for being the first band Janis Joplin sung in, a live recording like this one shows their prowess as a fivepiece band.

Their June 23, 1968 show at the Carousel Ballroom would prove to be legendary on a number of levels. The venue was owned by members of Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead and would later become the Fillmore West. Janis would leave the band only two months after the show to pursue her solo career, making this one of the last times the ensemble worked together. The show was recorded by Augustus Owsley Stanley III , a.k.a. 'Bear', soundman of The Grateful Dead and a masterful LSDcooker, who also supervised the remastering of the recordings shortly before his death in March 2011.

This is to be the first in a series of releases from his archive titled 'Bear's Sonic Archive', and it promises to be one hell of a ride. Though some of these songs have appeared on a 1972 Janis Joplin collection before in a very raw form, this is the first time these recordings are being released on vinyl.

Dedicated to Bear, this live performance is a more than welcome addition to the Big Brother catalogue!
