Mack The Knife: Ella In Berlin

43-year-old Ella rolls through her typical routine in feisty fashion on this 1960 recording, which documents the opening show of her European tour. There's the Satchmo impersonation (a joyous Mack the Knife), the lengthy scat showcase (How High the Moon), and a bevy of Gershwin and Porter tunes. Supported by pianist Paul Smith's quartet, Ella's voice sounds earthier than usual and her phrasing is as appealing as ever. She's tender on Misty and sultry on Too Darn Hot.

    Berlin

Ranked 344/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Nowadays acclaimed as Lou Reed's best solo album, 'Berlin' is the follow up to Reed's 'Transformer'.
A tragic rock opera about a drug addicted couple, heavy orchestrated and musically far away from the glam-rock of 'Transformer' and closer to the art-rock of the Velvet Underground (there are 2 tracks here played live by Velvet Underground in 1966, and Caroline Says is of course a redo of Stephanie Says from Velvet Underground's self- titled album).

The album got poor reviews when released in July 1973. Nevertheless, like good wines, 'Berlin' has aged and proved an inspiration for many bands.

Lou Reed got so disillusioned by the harsh critics, he did not include songs form 'Berlin' (recorded in London w/Bob Ezrin) in his live set for years.

In 2007 Lou Reed fulfilled his hopes and toured 'Berlin' with a 30-piece band; this tour was filmed and released on dvd in 2008 (which got rave reviews...).

Musicians on LP: Lou Reed (vocals & acoustic guitar), Bob Ezrin, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Jack Bruce, Ansley Dunbar, Tony Levin, Steve Winwood, Steve Hunter, Dick Wagner a.o.

Berlin is Reed's third solo album and is a drastic contrast to its predecessor, the glam rock Transformer. Featuring heavy orchestral arrangements and horn sections, Berlin features re-drafts of earlier compositions first penned by Reed's Velvet Underground.

    Live In Berlin

Jocelyn B. Smith has uplifted audiences throughout Germany with her energetic and expressive voice. Born and raised in New York City, after several tours as a back-up singer for other accomplished artists, Smith made her home in Berlin, Germany. The famous Berlin jazz club Quasimodo became her musical home where she performed regularly to packed houses for more than a decade. Her sophisticated vocal ability and broad musical interests have led Smith to experiment with various musical styles, including funk rock, soul ballads, chansons, and big band jazz. She sang Circle of Life, the title song on the German version of Disney's movie Lion King, whose soundtrack won a gold record in Germany. One of the main German news TV shows heute-Journal called her probably the most powerful voice of Germany. For her album Blue Lights & Nylons, which blended world-music with interpretations of well-known tunes by George Gershwin and Kurt Weill, Smith was nominated for the German Jazz Award in 2000.

This is her first live album and was recorded at the Quasimodo-released in 1997. There is a special spiritual presence in Jocelyn's music on this recording. It was taped just 2 weeks before the birth of her first child.

Persephone's Bees' new record New In Berlin is a self-produced album, recorded in San Francisco by Tom Ayres and Angelina Moysov at Decibelle Recording Studio. The songs on the album were written in Berlin cafes, London sidewalks, San Francisco and Oakland where the duo lived at the time before moving to NYC. Their previous album Notes From The Underworld was produced by hitmaker Eric Valentine and released here on Columbia Records; in France, Belgium and Switzerland on the indie label Kuskus. This new album was self-released in an experiment with direct fan communication, each song released first as an online single, a song every 6 weeks, each song having it's own page on the band's website with a short story, lyrics and video. The last single came out on July 17th, 2012, and these songs are now compiled onto this vinyl release plus digital download coupon for the album and extra versions of 3 songs sung in French, German and Russian. Spins at 45 rpm, comes complete with download codes.

Mack The Knife: Ella In Berlin

"This LP is a classic. Ella Fitzgerald is heard at the peak of her powers during a Berlin concert that is famous for her unique version of 'Mack the Knife'; when she forgot the words in midperformance, she substituted spontaneous and remarkable lyrics of her own. This music (which also includes a hot version of 'How High the Moon') is essential for all serious jazz collections."

    Live In Berlin: 1975

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of Weather Report, the Zawinul estate is proud to release this live document of the supergroups appearance at the 1975 Jazztage Berlin, one of the oldest and most prestigious jazz festivals in Europe. This is the first time that this historic performance has been made available commercially

From the opening strains of Wayne Shorters propulsive Freezing Fire to Joe Zawinuls exotic Badia (a template for the world music movement that would come over a decade later), Live in Berlin, 1975 crackles with an audacious spirit of discovery and daring, underscored by an uncanny sense of group-thinking that allowed the band to be truly in the moment from tune to tune, from bar to bar.

    Beethoven: Symphony No. 9

Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9 in D
minor, Op. 125" (also known as "the Choral"), is
    Beethoven's final complete symphony. Completed
in 1824, the symphony is one of the best-known
works in classical music. "Egmont Overture, Op.
84" by Ludwig van Beethoven, is a set of incidental
music pieces for the 1787 play of the same name
by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It consists of an
overture followed by a sequence of nine pieces
for soprano, male narrator and full symphony
orchestra. Beethoven wrote it between October
1809 and June 1810. The "Leonora Overture No.
3, Op. 72a was composed in 1806, and is the most
successful of the three Leonora overtures.

    Honest Song

The celebrated Diva Jocelyn B. Smith has been lauded by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for her outstanding productions in the fields of jazz, soul, blues, pop, rock, gospel, funk, crossover and classical music, and described her as a »total work of art« - and now she surprises us yet again with a completely new genre.
Born in New York in 1960, she moved to Berlin in 1984 where the music scene has become unthinkable without her. This is not only due to her powerful voice and her numerous cross-genre productions and collaborations - ranging from productions with Falco to composers such as Heiner Goebbels and Mikis Theodorakis - but also due to her social engagement.

The present direct-to-disc production was made following the recording of her CD Here I Am and contains seven songs, which were performed live in the studio before an enthusiastic audience and captured directly onto disc. This vinyl album takes Jocelyn B. Smith back to her childhood roots and the piano. She transports the sound right back to its original form and uses this as a basis for her art. She then weaves in further strands, whereby she delves into her musical experience and allows both her own compositions and those of old masters (J. S. Bach, Sergej Rachmaninov, Ludwig van Beethoven) to come to life.

In Honest Song she allows us a peek under her veil, the often-misunderstood 'Diva' veil. We accompany her in her moments of fear, hopelessness and self-contemplation.

In a stunning recording career of over 35 years, Anne-Sophie Mutter has sold upwards of 10 million total albums.

Renowned for her technical facility and limitless range of expressive colours, Mutter is the undisputed "Queen of the Violin" (Times of London) - a musical
    legend of our time.

It is no exaggeration to call this recording an historic venture: in June, Mutter and the Berliner Philharmoniker, whose deep and lasting artistic relationship
was forged in the 1970s, came together at the Berlin Philharmonie, to make their first studio album in almost 30 years.

Here, she records Dvorák's Violin Concerto - the last of the great Romantic violin concertos not yet in her discography.

Anne-Sophie Mutter has chosen to pair Dvorák's Violin Concerto with his fiery Mazurek Op. 49, and the Romance in F minor for violin and orchestra Op.
    11. The album also includes Dvorák's irresistible Humoresque, presented in its popular arrangement for violin and piano by Fritz Kreisler.

All works on this recording exemplify the vivid colour, touching melancholy and folkloric tunefulness that are trademarks of Dvorák's style.

    Bolivar Soloists: Musica de Venezuela

In Venezuela, at any gathering, musicians will take out their instruments and play traditional music for hours. This is a wonderful tradition, deeply missed when Venezuelan musicians go to live abroad. One of the triggers for the creation of Bolivar Soloists was the need to play our music, share it with our colleagues and perform it for audiences around the world. The original tunes have very distinctive characters and evoke simple but powerful emotions. It was a true challenge to bring these tunes into to a classical format trying both to keep the essence of the original and create a classical work to give it a faithful frame. These pieces convey the spirit of Venezuelan music making but also appeal to classical audiences who will enjoy the fine playing and fantastic musicianship.

After their debut record with music from Astor Piazzolla for Berliner Meister Schallplatten, the Bolivar Soloists make their second LP with a new formation: flute, oboe, clarinet and string quintet. Powerful and flexible, this ensemble is joined by the Cuatro - Venezuelan national instrument, a four-stringed guitar - which plays a very important role in this repertoire. The players, who come from South America and Europe, became very intimate with the music, allowing them to perform it with great rhythmical accuracy but with freedom and spontaneity. As this performance was recorded direct to disc, leaving no possibility of post-production, audience were invited to the studio to create the right atmosphere and make the musicians feel at home.

    Occident & Orient

The Orient, with its unsettled history and culture, has never ceased to fascinate generations of people. Memories real or imaginary become intermingled; tales from A Thousand and One Nights become mixed up with reality. This cultural flair is at the heart of the LP Orient and Occident, which the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra, Leipzig and soloist Kinan Azmeh have recorded using the direct-to-disc method. The resulting magical atmosphere will most certainly captivate all those who listen to it. Each of the chosen works offers a unique contrast to the others. Compositions by Jean-Baptiste Lully or Ludwig van Beethoven, who represent the spirit of their time and wrote 'oriental' works with European understanding, are contrasted with those of the Syrian clarinettist Kinan Azmeh, who - thanks to his origin - possesses a quite natural and original view of the fascinating Arabic culture. A truly sensual recording! And highly original too, for this direct-to-disc recording is available exclusively on the pressed LPs, limited copies (as it were) of the original recording on the lacquer disc, comparable to a copy of an etching.

    28-Mar

Elaiza is a young female trio which was formed around singer and songwriter Ela Steinmetz, and whose sound is given a special character thanks to her Ukrainian-German background. Having recently won the Young Talent Award at the Women Of The World Festival, Elaiza subsequently won over audiences at sold-out live shows, and then released the direct-to-disc production March 28.

Elaiza combines the ancient traditions of east-European folk music with modern pop melodies to create unique catchy songs. The trio themselves label their unusual roots-pop crossover mixture as neo-folklore. That Elaiza sounds authentic and sophisticated without resorting to modern digital recording techniques is demonstrated admirably by this direct-to-disc recording. In this completely analogue production, the musicians record their songs purely and simply, without being able to lean back on cutting, editing or revamping. The result, entitled March 28, (so named after the recording dated) gives one an impressive taste of Elaiza live.
