    The Good Earth

Another piece of topical hard rock from Manfred Mann's Earth Band and, as before, listenable even to those without a serious bone in their bodies, by virtue of the playing. Moving between hard rock and British blues influences (with a special debt to Cream on the opening cut, Give Me the Good Earth) and progressive rock, the quartet cuts a mean swathe across the sonic landscape, between Mick Rogers' soaring guitar solos and Manfred Mann's inimitable synthesizer work. When these guys start reaching, as on Earth Hymn, that's when their best musical instincts take hold, and the results are always worth hearing. There's stuff here that King Crimson or Be Bop Deluxe wouldn't have been ashamed to have had on any of their albums; indeed, the instrumental Sky High is worth the price of admission by itself as a showcase for the talents of all four players as both hard rock musicians and an art rock ensemble. They even manage to work in elements of folk-rock, and its attendant lyricism, on the album, by way of the Christopher Logue-based Be Not Too Hard (which was also recorded, in a different adaptation, by Joan Baez about seven years earlier). And Earth Hymn, Pt. 2 closes out the album in grand style, once again pushing the band to the edge of their unique brand of progressive/hard rock.

Leave Home (40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

3xCD/1 Vinyl LP Deluxe Edition Features New 40th Anniversary Mix By Album Engineer/Mixer Ed Stasium

Also Includes A Newly Remastered Version Of The Original Mix, Rarities, And Unreleased Studio And Live Recordings

    Includes 12x12 Hardcover Book

Limited Edition Of 15,000 Individually Numbered Copies

Following the success of last year's 40th-anniversary edition of the Ramones' debut album comes a deluxe version of the group's follow-up, Leave Home. Originally released in January 1977, this 30-minute opus of buzzsaw rock introduced fans to classics like "Pinhead" "California Sun," and "Swallow My Pride."

To celebrate the album's indelible legacy, Rhino will release the 3xCD/1 Vinyl LP LEAVE HOME: 40th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION. It contains two different mixes of the album, a remastered version of the original and a new 40th-anniversary mix by original Leave Home album engineer/mixer Ed Stasium, along with a treasure trove of unheard recordings, and an unreleased live show recorded in 1977 at CBGB's.

The deluxe edition will be produced in a limited and numbered edition of 15,000 copies worldwide and comes packaged in a 12 x 12 hardcover book. In addition to the music, the set also features stories about the band by legendary former manager Danny Fields, as told to renowned music scribe Michael Azerrad, as well as details about making the album by Stasium.

The first disc features two different mixes of Leave Home, opening with a remastered version of the original stereo mix. The highlight is the new 40th-anniversary mix of the full album, created by Stasium from the original multi-track tapes, and designed to better reflect the Ramones' raw power and beef up the sound. In the set's liner notes he writes: "Generally, the consensus was [the original] maybe sounded too clean, the guitars panned completely left-right detracted from the band's foreboding presence, and the reverb effects especially were a little excessive." The new 40th-anniversary mix is also featured on the LP that accompanies this deluxe edition.

The second disc is overflowing with more than two dozen rare and unreleased recordings. It begins with rough mixes for 15 tracks recorded for Leave Home at Sundragon studio in New York. Most are missing elements that had yet to be recorded, offering a fascinating insight into the band's recording process and the development of the album. Also included are "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" and "Babysitter," both of which served as replacement songs on the US and UK versions of the album, respectively, when the band removed "Carbona Not Glue" from the track list shortly after initial release. The disc concludes with a combination of 18 alternate mixes and instrumental versions of all tracks from the album.

The final disc features an unreleased recording of the band's concert at CBGB's on April 2, 1977. The show took place a few months after Leave Home was released and includes live performances of album tracks like "Suzy Is A Headbanger," "Oh Oh I Love Her So," and "Babysitter," the latter of which was only performed live a handful of times, along with classics like "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue."

Hatari! - Music from the Paramount Motion Picture

200-gram 33 1/3 LP, mastered at Sterling Sound by Ryan Smith from the Analog Tapes

Plated and Pressed by Quality Record Pressings

Deluxe tip-on Jacket by Stoughton Printing

    Featuring Baby Elephant Walk

Featured on Harry Pearson's Famous Recommended List of fine audio recordings

Coming off a double Oscar win for his Breakfast at Tiffany's score, Henry Mancini produced this score for the Howard Hawks-directed, John Wayne-starring safari comedy Hatari!.

This is at first a fun blend of jazz and Afro-exotica, jungle drums mixed with a classic bop combo. Elsewhere, however, the soundtrack opts for some pleasant, but very Western jazz, only stopping for the African instrument-sampler 'The Sounds of Hatari,' which features some nice treated piano. The filmmakers were probably hoping that the Mercer and Carmichael song 'Just for Tonight' would be as much a success as Tiffany's 'Moon River,' but if Hatari! is memorable for anything, it's for the incredibly goofy 'Baby Elephant Walk,' which has gone on to be infamous musical shorthand for kookiness of any stripe. - AllMusic.com.

Now Music from the Paramount Picture score Hatari! is back bigger and better than ever! We've gone the deluxe Analogue Productions route - remastered from the original analog tape by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, cut at 33 1/3 RPM, plated and pressed as a 200-gram LP at Quality Record Pressings. Then packaged in a deluxe tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing. A great title, a brilliant reissue. Exceptional!

    Study In Brown

Heavyweight 180 Gram Direct Metal Mastered Vinyl LP Pressing with Deluxe Inner Sleeve

    Includes One Bonus Track

Study In Brown album by Clifford Brown / Max Roach was released on the Wax Time label.

From the very first second, beginning with the magic drumming of Max Roach, right up to the very last note, this LP will overwhelm listeners with its sheer power - hard bop is certainly no easy fare for lovers of beautiful sounds. One is swept along in a maelstrom into the unknown, and is taken to wherever the soloist's wealth of ideas leads him. That's particularly clear in the case of Caravan, Lands End, and Gerkin' For Perkin: the brilliantly interacting quartet, all of them soloists with 'equal rights', race through the numbers like an express train. The trumpet and the tenor sax - often playing unisono - are not placed at the fore (which would be usual), but are on the same tonal plane as the rhythm group. By this means, a tightly-knit, typical, thrilling sound is achieved, with the result that this album must be counted among the top 100 in the jazz firmament.

Generations of trumpeters have since studied Clifford Brown's art of playing, who died tragically young in a car accident. Now, thanks to this top-quality re-release, listeners are offered a wonderful opportunity to study this Study In Brown.

    Blue Note Reissue

How do these new deluxe re-issues stack up to the alternatives? Not surprisingly, the big difference comes from the 45-RPM cutting. The faster cutting speed creates greater dynamic range and the sense of more air around the instruments, which stand out in better relief and give that you-are-there feel. The tradeoff requires you to flip the record twice as often, a small price to pay for this level of enhanced realism. These new issues maintain that timbral accuracy and at the same time bring out the piano sound like never before, for the first time Blue Note re-issues sound right. Dennis D. Davis, Hi-Fi+, Issue 57

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their hands. Back home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent me. I hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

...these first five Acoustic Sounds Blue Note re-issues are pure bop genius...The best news is that Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman were keen enough to do nothing more than gently clean up the masters, bringing us even closer to the hard bop edge. The 45 rpm pressings that I received were all super quiet with every last drop of resolution from the master tapes. I had almost forgotten just how good Paul Chambers and Phil Joe were together as the backbone of these groups. I've always loved this music but I didn't remember it sounding this good! Hank Mobley offers us some brilliant sax bits on one of Kenny Dorham's finest recordings, Whistle Stop and Dexter Gordon's performance blew me away as well. The biggest surprise were the Lee Morgan records. I suggest turning these up loud, since they possess unlimited energy and some hooks that will knock you out. Amazing! Just a small warning: Once you start playing these Blue Note recordings you will be hooked. The good news is that Acoustic Sounds is working on at least 20 more of these jazz gems. So make sure your turntable has a setting for 45 rpm, clean your stylus occassionally, and get ready to be transported to nirvana. - Dan Babineau, Tone Audio, No. 14 2008, www.tonepublications.com

This album is unique within Lee Morgan's vast and rich Blue Note discography. With then current employer Art Blakey, band mate Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, the trumpeter abandons time constraints and stretches out on four, soulful, hard-bop compositions (the first and the last are by Cal Massey). These hard bop masters are constantly inspired by Blakey's explosive grooves.

    Coltrane

Considered by many to be his finest single album, Coltrane finds John Coltrane displaying all of the exciting elements that sparked brilliance and allowed his fully formed instrumental voice to shine through in the most illuminating manner. On tenor saxophone, he's simply masterful, offering the burgeoning sheets of sound philosophy into endless weavings of melodic and tuneful displays of inventive, thoughtful, driven phrases. Coltrane also plays a bit of soprano saxophone as a primer for his more exploratory work to follow. Meanwhile, bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, and especially the stellar McCoy Tyner have integrated their passionate dynamics into the inner whole of the quartet. The result is a most focused effort, a relatively popular session to both his fans or latecomers, with five selections that are brilliantly conceived and rendered. "Out of This World," at over 14 minutes in modal trim, is a powerful statement, stretched over Tyner's marvelous and deft chords, the churning rhythms conjured by Jones, and the vocal style Coltrane utilizes as he circles the wagons on this classic melody, including a nifty key change. "Tunji" is a mysterious, easily rendered piece in 4/4 which speaks to the spiritual path Coltrane tred, a bit riled up at times while Tyner remains serene. Hard bop is still in the back of their collective minds during "Miles' Mode," a sliver of a melody that jumps into jam mode in a free-for-all blowing session, while the converse is to be found in Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes," the quintessential ballad and impressive here for the way Coltrane's holds notes, emotion, and expressive intellectuality. On soprano you can tell Coltrane is close to taking complete control of his newly found voicings, as a playful, jaunty "The Inch Worm" in 3/4 time is only slightly strained, but in which he finds complete communion with the others. Even more than any platitudes one can heap on this extraordinary recording, it historically falls between the albums OlÉ Coltrane and Impressions -- completing a triad of studio efforts that are as definitive as anything Coltrane ever produced, and highly representative of him in his prime.--Michael G. Nastos

Bill Evans was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly worked in a trio setting. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and is considered by some to have been the most influential post-World War II jazz pianist. Evans's use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, singing melodic lines continues to influence jazz pianists today. Unlike many other jazz musicians of his time, Evans never embraced new movements like jazz fusion or free jazz.

The iconic jazz pianist Bill Evans is joined here by none other than bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker for this 1965 recording. The album includes the heart-wrenching Who Can I Turn To? alongside If You Could See Me Now and Johnny Carisi's Israel.

Although all eight of the selections heard on this Verve release have been recorded on other occasions by pianist Bill Evans, these renditions hold their own. Teamed up with bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker (his regular trio of 1963-1965), Evans plays definitive versions of such songs as Johnny Carisi's Israel, How My Heart Sings, Who Can I Turn To, and If You Could See Me Now. - Scott Yanow, allmusic.com

Bill Evans, one of the most influential and tragic figures of the post-bop jazz piano, was known for his highly nuanced touch, the clarity of the feeling content of his music and his reform of the chord voicing system pianists used. He recorded over fifty albums as leader and received five Grammy awards... His inescapable influence on the very sound of jazz piano has touched virtually everybody of prominence in the field after him (as well as most of his contemporaries), and he remains a monumental model for jazz piano students everywhere, even inspiring a newsletter devoted solely to his music and influence. - All About Jazz
