    Interstellar

    4-Page Booklet

The movie hit of 2014, Interstellar, chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage. While the film is directed by acclaimed Christopher Nolan (Inception, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight ), the epic soundtrack score was composed by Nolan's longtime collaborator, Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

Zimmer and Nolan planned to move away from the Batman Trilogy's scores and to come up with a unique one. Before (re)writing a word of Interstellar, Nolan did something he had never done before, something that speaks to his desire for more emotionally potent work. He asked composer Hans Zimmer to write some music for the film, but without telling him about the genre, title, characters, or plot: I said, 'I am going to give you an envelope with a letter in it. One page. It's going to tell you the fable at the center of the story. You work for one day, then play me what you have written.' He was up for it. And it was perfect. He gave me the heart of the movie. Zimmer says he remembers this idea from Nolan's letter: Once we become parents, we can't help but look at ourselves through the eyes of our children.

Zimmer conducted 45 scoring sessions for Interstellar, which was three times more than for Inception. Interstellar's score has been nominated for the 2015 Oscars, BAFTA Awards, Golden Globes and the Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

    Batdance (Single)

    12 Maxi-Single Reissue

    Featuring Batdance And 200 Balloons

Batdance was written for the 1989 Batman soundtrack. Helped by the film's popularity, the song reached number one in the US, becoming Prince's fourth American number-one single, and his first to achieve the feat of topping all 3 American charts since Kiss in 1986.

Batdance was a last-minute replacement for a brooding track titled Dance with the Devil, which Prince felt was too dark. It is almost two songs in one-a chaotic, mechanical dance beat that changes gears into a slinky, funky groove before changing back for the song's conclusion (except on the single version in which it eliminates the guitar solo before the middle section, then goes straight to the mechanical Joker laughter from the end of the movie and an earlier movie soundbyte of Michael Keaton saying Stop). The track is an amalgam of many musical ideas of Prince's at the time. Elements from at least seven songs (some unreleased) were incorporated into Batdance: 200 Balloons, We Got the Power, House in Order, Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic (later released on the album Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic), The Future, and Electric Chair. Some of these were mere snippets, and other segments showed up only in remixes of the track. The song was also loaded with dialog samples from the film.

The B-side to the Batdance is 200 Balloons, which was recorded for the film and serves as the musical blueprint for the main portion of Batdance. The song was rejected for the film by Tim Burton and replaced with Trust. The lyrics of 200 Balloons reference the scene which it was created for to a greater degree than the replacement track, which is only connected to the scene by the Joker asking Who do you trust? after the song ends. Prince did little more than replace the lyrics of 200 Balloons in its transition into Batdance. Only musical portions survived the transition, but full lyrics showed up in The Batmix(turn your head to the east, I be coming from the west). 200 Balloons also contains samples of House in Order and Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic; the latter was another song submitted for inclusion in the movie, but rejected (it was replaced by Partyman).

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice Soundtrack

WaterTower Music announced the release of the soundtrack to the feature film "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," a collaborative effort by film composers Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL (aka Tom Holkenborg). Available on Limited Edition 3-LP deluxe vinyl, the set features etched vinyl art and exclusive full sized poster.

"Junkie XL is an incredibly insightful film composer. It was a perfect idea for us to work together on the 'Batman v Superman' score," explained Academy-Award-winning composer Zimmer. Grammy nominee Junkie XL showed equal excitement at the pairing, saying, "Hans has an incredible legacy, and I was extremely thrilled when he approached me to work on 'Batman v Superman' with him."

The composers discussed their close working relationship with director Zack Snyder. "Zack allows us to try things we haven't tried before. He's very supportive of the eccentricities that we bring to this," says Zimmer. Junkie XL concurred. "He's very open and accepting of our ideas, and infuses the creative process with an energy that inspires you."

Hans and Tom (Junkie XL) created an incredibly compelling and interesting new musical world for Batman, while continuing to expand on the amazing world and themes Hans had previously created for Superman," noted director Zack Snyder. "By aligning their vision with my perspective and seeing the characters anew through the lens of the film they were able to support the visual aspects of movie in a way that elevates the film to another level. In so many ways, they become the final texture, the final note in the process of creating the world."

"This electrifying collaboration brings us such brilliant new character themes," commented WaterTower Music head Jason Linn, "While we've been fortunate to work several times with both composers individually, this experience has been uniquely thrilling."

    Batman And Robin

    Import

This novelty album, released in 1966 during the height of the Batman & Robin craze, was initially credited to the The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale and featured an album full of tracks based on the popular TV show like The Batman Theme Song, The Penguin Chase and The Batcave.

The album is entirely instrumental, except for someone singing Batmaaaan! in the theme song. But the interesting thing about this album, and what makes it an absolute cult gem, are the musicians who are behind it all: basically a joint collaboration between Sun Ra's Arkestra and Danny Kalb's Blues Project (one of the first psychedelic rock bands as well as one of the world's first jam bands).

Dan and Dale were actually blues guitarist Danny Kalb and Steve Katz (later of Blood, Sweat & Tears) on dueling guitars, while Sun Ra and Al Kooper take over organ duties (a Hammond B-3) and members of Ra's Arkestra play sax. Gatefold edition.

Chicano Batman came out of L.A., four young men in vintage formalwear, playing songs that blended Brazilian Tropicalía with early '70s psychedelic soul and the romantic pop of bands like Los Angeles Negros. It was an immediately addictive sonic brew, and their reputation grew fast. Now, they're making their boldest statement yet with Freedom Is Free, their third album and ATO Records debut.

The Girl on the Train is an American thriller drama film from 2016 directed by Tate Taylor and written by Erin Cressida Wilson, based on Paula Hawkins' New York Times No. 1 bestselling debut novel.

The film is the story of Rachel Watson's life post-divorce. She spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds.

The Score is composed and conducted by Grammy Award Winner Danny Elfman. One of his most famous compositions is the theme to the animated TV show The Simpsons. He also composed the Original Soundtrack of the recent film Goosebumps and the film classic Big Fish.

Among his honors are four Academy Award nominations, a Grammy for Batman, an Emmy for Desperate Housewives, the 2002 Richard Kirk Award and the Disney Legend Award.

Elfman's scores for Batman and Edward Scissorhands were nominated for AFI's 100 Years of Film Scores.

    Rock Action

Iggy Pop's various musical style changes throughout his career are detailed in this collection of rare and unreleased tracks. The awesome power of the Stooges is on display as well as Iggy Pop's now dated experiments in new wave. Riddled with cover tunes, the album does not betray Iggy Pop's roots in garage rock. Pulled from live dates throughout the '80s the cover tunes range from Family Affair by Sly and the Family Stone to the Batman Theme. These cover tunes are simply points of interest rather than the powerful rock & roll that Iggy Pop shows himself to be capable of. Louie Louie slurs into Hang on Sloopy. No Fun gives the nod to Lou Reed and becomes Waiting for the Man, but the strongest points of the album are the ad-libbed tracks. Rock Action and Modern Guy display Iggy Pop's ability to make up lyrics off the top of his head. They appear to be just studio jams that have been brought to the stage with powerful results. In Rock Action, it sounds as though Iggy Pop was just musing on his former bandmate's self-proclaimed title, creating a song that puts a voice to his demand for action. Only two other tracks on the collection reach the same level as the jam tracks. I Got a Right and Gimme Some Skin are two of the Stooges' greatest songs that never made it onto their studio albums. The heavy rhythms of Gimme Some Skin are the Stooges at their best with Iggy Pop again putting voice to his need for action. --Matt Whalley

Partyman is a song by Prince from his 1989 Batman album, and the follow-up to his number one hit, Batdance. The song became the only Batman single to perform better in the UK, where it peaked at number 14, as opposed to the US (where it peaked at number 18). The upbeat and humorous number features horn samples and Prince's sped-up Camille vocals, as well as a vocal performance by Anna Fantastic. The 12 single extends the song to about six minutes in length (labeled as the Video Mix), and also includes a Purple Party Mix, which starts with a string of samples from Prince's earlier hits and contains different lyrics. It also includes the B-side Feel U Up, a previously unreleased Camille track which would later be available on The Hits/The B-Sides compilation.

films, etc.), is a perfect musical partner for the somewhat macabre director, and never more so than here, where, in
fact, Elfman gets not only to write the music but to play the part of the main character. The Nightmare Before
Christmas is an animated movie musical about the abduction of Christmas by the denizens of Halloween land, and
Elfman sings the part of Jack, the Pumpkin King.

Sam Duckworth is Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, the Southend-born troubadour who named his solo project after a solution from an old Batman adventure game. His home-made debut album, The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager was released on Atlantic Records in 2006. He then enlisted Kate Nash and Billy Bragg to guest on his 2008 follow-up Searching For The Hows And Whys and became a leading figure in the political pop scene, helping to spark the new wave of modern folk heroes that's brought us Jamie T and Jack Peñate. This, his 11-song self-titled third album was released in September of 2010 and features guest-appearances by Shy FX and Baaba Maal. 180g audiophile vinyl.

DISTANCE BETWEEN DREAMS captures the energy of one of the most historic surf seasons on record through Walsh's eyes, pairing vivid cinematography, with an immersive custom score by Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL. The Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum producer, musician, and composer uses a mix of modern aesthetic, and analog synthesizers to capture the essence of riding big waves with elegance and drama.

Trying to tell Ian's story was a tremendous learning experience for me, said Holkenborg. Surfing is a dangerous, solitary, and very noble pursuit, and I think the majority of people are unaware of just how athletic guys like Ian are. The work he has to put in and out of the water is tremendous. The ocean is a magical place, but it's also dangerous. Capturing Ian's spirit and the dichotomy of his environment is what is at the heart of this score.

Early in the process, Holkenborg was inspired by Walsh's dedication, the sacrifices that he has made, and his unwavering commitment in and out of the water. A 'full contact composer' who composes and produces using analog equipment, Holkenborg immediately connected with Walsh's physical drive to survive and thrive paddling into massive, 40+ foot waves. He wanted to give viewers the experience of being in the ocean with the select handful of surfers that ride the biggest waves in the world. In tandem with the film's state-of-the-art cinematography, the score, using a mix of modern aesthetic and analog synthesizers captures the drama and elegance of the big wave amphitheater.

Holkenborg's other recent projects include MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, DEADPOOL, BLACK MASS, KILL YOUR FRIENDS, AND BATMAN V SUPERMAN with Hans Zimmer. Forthcoming projects include JUSTICE LEAGUE and DARK TOWER.

Willis Earl Beal was born on the South Side of Chicago. He would never consider it home. An odd kid, he spent a lot of his youth talking with his grandmother, who would entertain his endless questions about the universe and encourage his love of drawing. He developed an obsession with Batman that would last well into his teenage years, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a form of vigilante training. Willis Earl Beal died on an army base in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. While in boot camp he was plagued with physical and mental abuse, health complications (which would later require surgery and the removal of large portions of his intestine) forced his discharge. He moved back home. "When that all broke down," Beal says. "I lost a piece of myself." Willis Earl Beal was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After a stint of homelessness there, he worked odd jobs and rented a studio apartment. Though he'd never learned to play any instruments, he began to record raw, lo-fi albums with hand-drawn covers that he'd leave at coffee shops around town alongside flyers seeking a girlfriend with his phone number written on them. Those artifacts would eventually find their way to the cover of Found magazine, then to Jamie-James Medina at XL Recordings. Beal signed with XL's Hot Charity imprint in 2012. Willis Earl Beal died in New York City. Despite the release of two critically well-received albums on XL-Acousmatic Sorcery, a collection of his early home recordings, and a fully orchestrated studio album he recorded in Amsterdam called Nobody Knows-he was a mess. "I'd drink myself into stupors," he says. "I'd walk around in the daytime, crying, then I'd go downtown. The police would bring me home in the morning." Willis Earl Beal was born on a lake twenty miles outside Olympia, Washington. After ending his contract with XL, Beal went to live in the woods, and began an artistic transformation entirely of his own design, from rough-edged outsider-art provocateur to the kind of mysterious crooner one might expect to haunt the outskirts of Twin Peaks. "People had all these ideas about what I was supposed to be," he says. "I had only ever wanted to make lullabies." Beal's development played out over two self-released EPs and a full-length album, and then Beal built the patient, ambient-leaning Noctunes. The album's twelve songs are moving and meditative, thoroughly soaked with mournful synth strings and simple lyricism that Beal says is intentionally minimalistic. "I wanted to create this persona that could say everything perfectly with very little," Beal says. "The record, to me, is a perfect record. I listen to that thing a lot, and it helps me." Willis Earl Beal has yet to be born. Critics and publicists defined him before he'd had a chance to define himself. Their expectations were inextricably linked with race and gender, two concepts Beal thoroughly rejects. Now, two extremely productive years removed from the spotlight, Beal doesn't feel pressure to define himself against anything. His new music is shockingly original, utterly confident, and as ephemeral as Beal himself. He levitates above definition, concerned only with self-discovery and truth-seeking. "I know it sounds falsely altruistic," he says. "But I think a simple voice like mine can serve as an example of some kind of freedom."

Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause and Cure

The second of his MGM trilogy-1967's peculiarly named Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause And Cure-took on countrified French ye-ye ("The Girls In Paris"), a tale of a young bullfighter built on Spanish guitar and choral cowboys ("Jose"), a string-drenched song about the passing of time ("The Old Man And His Guitar"), and a western epic about a Native American tribe ("The Nights"). And that was just the first four tracks. Elsewhere, the honky tonk madness of "Suzi Jane Is Back In Town," the Byrds-like jangle of "In Our Time" and-in the bonus tracks-an instrumental named "Batman" confirm this to be one of Hazlewood's most far-ranging, far-out LPs ever!
