True Colors (On Sale)A Vocal Tour de Force: 1986 Sophomore Effort Stacked With Big-Name Guests and Ambitious Arrangements
Grammy-Nominated Double-Platinum Set Includes Internationally Recognized Title Track Plus Top 10 Singles "What's Going On" and "Change of Heart"
Illuminative Sonics: LP Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI
Cyndi Lauper could've easily played up the independent wild-child pop persona she established on her breakthrough debut until the trend faded. Instead, on her superb sophomore effort, the charismatic artist opts for a more mature and creatively ambitious program, inviting big-name guests and pursuing deeper instrumental textures on a set that goes far beyond the well-known title track. True Colors is a vocal tour de force, an expressive statement on which Lauper showcases singing steeped in emotion, phrasing, and earnestness.
Bringing Lauper's rich timbre to the fore, and mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system, this RTI-pressed LP presents the 1986 album in the finest fidelity it's ever enjoyed. Period touches such as synthesized drumbeats and layered keyboards no longer sound blatantly artificial or canned. Instruments now possess a warmer, fuller roundness that fleshes out their role in the compositions. And Lauper's vocals-at times balladic, soaring, plaintive, stylish, and celebratory-occupy a defined place in the mix, anchoring songs etched with tonal expressiveness and diverse arrangements.
An all-star cast aids Lauper in shaping what remains a colossally underrated record. Billy Joel (vocals), Adrian Belew (guitar), the Bangles (vocals), Aimee Mann (vocals), Nile Rodgers (guitar), and Rick Derringer (guitar) are among the guests. So is Pee Wee Herman, whose telephone operator role at the conclusion of "911" speaks to the fact that Lauper didn't abandon her whimsical nature even as she pressed forward. Cajun accents, soulful motifs ("What's Going On"), and joyous covers of traditional fare ("Iko Iko") keep the album pleasantly varied and accessibly offbeat.
Of course, Lauper also turns in, with "True Colors," what's arguably her career-defining moment, the chart-topping single radiating with gorgeous elegance and graceful phrasing that forced audiences to regard the performer in a different light. For her boldness, Lauper was rewarded with two Grammy nominations and a song that has since been covered by artists such as Phil Collins and appeared as the theme for the 1988 Olympic Games and 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Up On The Chair Beatrice (On Sale)Susan Cowsill and Vicki Peterson have been playing music apart and together for their entire lives. Susan was a child star with her family band, who were the real life template for The Partridge Family. Vicki of course is known as a member of The Bangles.
The two first performed as The Psycho Sisters in the early years of the last decade of the previous century. At that time, both were members, along with Peter Holsapple, of the much loved band The Continental Drifters.
After many years of friendship, the two decided to make a proper album. Up On the Chair, Beatrice features ten tunes of harmony, hooks and just a touch of New Orleans Hoodoo. Along with 8 original tunes, the album features their versions Peter Holsapple's What Do You Want From Me and Harry Nilsson's Cuddly Toy.1. Heather Says

Covered In Black
And they are glorious, beautiful. Sounding a bit like She &
Him might were they produced by Sufjan Stevens - to create a
sort of She & She & She & She, they are four alt-pop Brontës
who beam right into your stereo like a comforting aural torch
you never need to buy batteries for. - Drowned In Sound
"Best referenced midway between the Bangles and Go-Gos in
terms of a girl group approach, there's a kind of slacker
sensibility at work here, one that never muffles the drive or
conviction. I was meant for something more, Cottingham
sings on the final track, aptly entitled Anything and indeed a
lyric has never sounded so true." - Blurt
Precociousness always catches its observer off guard; we are
witness to a stubborn incongruity, a disproportionate relationship
between limited years and elevated levels of skill, insight, or
vision. It confounds common experience, and we wonder. When
Ortolan's debut album Time On A String was released in 2010,
three quarters of the family foursome were yet under drinking
age. Along with copious kudos given to the quality of the music
and the maturity of the songwriting, every single review made
mention of their age. Wonder indeed.
What may be the greater marvel though, is when a nascent talent
starts to grow into itself; when prodigious promise begins to
deliver something beyond spectacle, when it begins to nourish
those who are witness to it. Such is the case with Ortolan's latest,
Covered In Black.
The pulse at the heart of Ortolan's music has always been
Stephanie Cottingham's voice, a curious combination of
innocence, wisdom, and wit (all rare commodities in the greater
landscape of popular music today). These beguiling qualities
remain, but here her voice is imbued with a greater richness. The
bandwidth of color, hue, and shade has widened; the reds are
redder and the blues are bluer. Even more significant though, is
Cottingham's development as an interpreter of her own songs.
Her voice remains a thing to behold, but in the tradition of Kitty
Wells, Etta James, or Emmylou Harris, she is becoming a
storyteller. Each note is now is its own scene in a greater drama.
Each vocal push and lilt tells of loss and love, fear and
As much as Ortolan is about Stephanie Cottingham's voice and
songwriting, it is about family, and the picture is incomplete
without the powerful presence of Jill (keys), Briana (bass), and
Lara (drums). Floor toms drum and drive, strumming guitars
strum and strum faster, basses rock and keyboards swirl and
swoop. Their commitment to one another is palpable, and is as
important to the music as the notes and rhythms they're playing.
That their voices also join Stephanie's throughout the record is
not insignificant. There is an excess of animosity in the world: so
much time is spent competing, resisting, debating, conflicting,
arguing. There is something so vital and humane in joining voices
for once, in unison. One of the simplest and most powerful
activities of human beings is singing together, and this is a
central ingredient to Ortolan's music and life. Nothing is
pretended-it's what they do: voices are raised and raised
together -- to cry, to question, to pray, to laugh, to celebrate.
The color black is achieved through the mixing of different
paints and opposing pigments; as such, black represents the
presence of color, not the absence of it, and Ortolan's latest is
covered in it.1. Bottle's Broken

Irresistible BlissIrresistible Bliss was Soul Coughing's second album, released in 1996 (see 1996 in music). The band initially planned for Tchad Blake, producer of their first album, Ruby Vroom, to produce the album, but the death of a family member in a car accident caused Blake to take a hiatus. Over the objections of his bandmates and his record label, Slash Records/Warner Bros., frontman Mike Doughty (then billed as M. Doughty) hired producer David Kahne (Fishbone, The Bangles, Sublime, Tony Bennett, Sugar Ray, The Strokes); he was intent on following up the wild sonics of Ruby Vroom with a tightly-wound, trembly, New Wave inspired record.1. You're A Very Lovely WomanAmong folk-rock devotees and power-pop cultists, Emitt Rhodes is a legendary figure with a powerful mystique. The prodigiously talented singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist first came to prominence as the teenaged leader of The Merry-Go-Round, a unique L.A. baroque folk-rock quartet whose lone 1967 album is now regarded as being in the same class as the debut discs of such 60s contemporaries as the Byrds, Love, the Left Banke and the Buffalo Springfield.
The Merry-Go-Roundwhich also included guitarist Gary Kato, ex-Leaves bassist Bill Rinehart and former Grass Roots drummer Joel Larsonscored an early hit with the infectiously jangly Live. The song (which would be covered in the 80s by the Bangles) became a major regional hit in the Los Angeles area. Lives equally distinctive B-side, Time Will Show the Wiser, was covered the following year by Fairport Convention. The bands second single, the bittersweet, orchestrated Youre a Very Lovely Woman, was an equally impressive achievement.
Those three songs are all featured on Youre a Very Lovely Woman, which offers a consistently intoxicating mix of Beatlesque vocal harmonies, ringing folk-rock guitars, sparkling songcraft and playful baroque and psychedelic touches.
Although The Merry-Go-Round would disband two years after releasing their only LP, the album has gained steadily in notoriety and prestige over the years. Original copies of the album have become rare collectors items, regularly changing hands for exorbitant prices among fans.
Now, Youre a Very Lovely Woman is once again available on vinyl to thrill longtime admirers and new fans alike. Mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-quality high-definition vinyl, the album includes complete, meticulously reproduced original cover art.1. Live
