    Afternoon In Paris (Speakers Corner)

It was in Paris that John Lewis co-led this 1956 date with Sacha Distel, a French guitarist who never became well known in the U.S. but commanded a lot of respect in French jazz circles. The same can be said about the other French players employed on Afternoon In Paris -- neither tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen nor bassist Pierre Michelot were huge names in the U.S., although both were well known in European jazz circles. With Lewis on piano, Distel on guitar, Wilen on tenor, Michelot or Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke or Connie Kay on drums, the part-American, part-French group of improvisers provides an above-average bop album that ranges from Willow Weep For Me, All The Things You Are, and I Cover The Waterfront to Milt Jackson's Bags' Groove and Lewis' title song. The big-toned Wilen was only 19 when Afternoon In Paris was recorded, but as his lyrical yet hard-swinging solos demonstrate, he matured quickly as a sax man. A mythic LP and one of the best recorded in France!!!

The Warner Brothers Years: The 12 Collection

R&B's most enduring duo Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson sure know how to make it right when it comes to soulful R&B gems and lush dance grooves from golden era of '70s soul and disco. They recorded for Warner Bros. from '73 through to the early '80s, and Rhino's ASHFORD & SIMPSON - THE WARNER BROS. YEARS: THE 12 COLLECTION both rediscovers and re-imagines the best of those years.

The 12 Collection gathers together 12 tracks, pressed on 180-gram vinyl 12 singles, including many of the beyond-rare 12 mixes that were previously never commercially released, and originally only appeared as promo-only 12 extended 'disco mixes' which featured the handywork of Valerie's brother Jimmy Simpson, a pioneer of 'intros and breaks' which now form the basis of much of today's dance music. The original mixes are cut at 45rpm and record one couples One More Try with Tried Tested & Found True, record two pairs Over & Over with It Seems To Hang On. Record three features Don't Cost You Nothing backed with Bourgie Bourgie, and record four backs Found A Cure with Stay Free.

The fifth 12 is a Remixes EP, cut at 33rpm, and featuring four contemporary retellings of Ashford & Simpson musical lore by star remixers whose admiration for the songs pulses through every groove. DJ Tom Moulton's revealing take on the hit Found A Cure, including his unearthing of elements that were long forgotten and Paul Simpson and John Morales reconsider Tried, Tested And Found True, Dimitri re-edits Stay Free, to become a slamming club mix and Tommy Musto re-touches It Seems To Hang On to create a sexy between-the-sheets groove. 'These remixers', noted Simpson, 'did an incredible job breathing new life into our songs while maintaining the integrity of them.

All five 12 singles come on original contemporary labels and are housed in the Disco range bags of the period, housed in an attractive 12 x 12 slipcase box. This release is a strictly limited edition of 3,000 copies worldwide.

Known to write some very key social commentary oriented songs in his long career, Todd nails some of his finest ever with his brilliant Bag Lady and Bread. Soon to be followed with more hard rockers like his guitar driven Out Of Control, the stellar piano ballad Lucky Guy, and the beautiful Fade Away which closes out the Hermit Of Mink Hollow album, making this one of the most important and finest albums of his career.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born during the Great Depression into a poor family in Mississippi. They moved to Memphis during the early fifties, and as a struggling young truck driver, he cut some demos at Sun Studios as a gift for his beloved mother Gladys. These initial songs, of which he had only paid a few dollars to record, would become the catalyst that would kick start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar unlike the world has ever known.

The folks at RCA Victor knew that this young fellow named Elvis was destined for superstardom. They quickly bought out his contract and signed the legend to a long-term deal, and his first RCA single Heartbreak Hotel forever etched "The King Of Rock And Roll" trademark to his name.

From the remainder of the 1950's, Elvis would release several more hit albums and number one singles, star in a couple of box office smash films, and prior to spending time in the Army, he recorded his fourth album and what would become one of the most memorable and best loved Christmas LP's of all time, Elvis' Christmas Album.

The 1957 album was a blockbuster as it topped the pop charts for a month, making this one of the biggest albums of his career ultimately selling over 13 Million Units and his first Diamond Award Winning RIAA certified recording. Elvis' Christmas Album truly proved once again that his career was unlike any other in music history.

This holiday classic takes off with the rockin' Santa Claus Is Back In Town and followed by the soulful groove of White Christmas. More Elvis favorites follow with his brilliant interpretation of the melancholy ballad I'll Be Home For Christmas and the blues rocker number one single smash Blue Christmas.

The album also features a nice helping of gospel standards which Elvis made his own with favorites like (There'll Be) Peace In The Valley and It Is No Secret (What God Can Do) , the timeless Silent Night , and of course the heartfelt O Little Town Of Bethlehem . In total, the album showcases twelve important Elvis Presley recordings which have truly gone on to become definitive classics by any measure of popular music.

The Joe Walsh-Led James Gang Balances Edgy Hard Rock and Sincere Country-Tinged Ballads on 1970 Classic: Rides Again Features the Radio Favorite Funk #49 and Multi-Part Bomber

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes, Pressed at RTI, and Strictly Limited to 4000 Numbered Copies: Mobile Fidelity 180g Vinyl LP of Rides Again Presents James Gang in Full-Scale Detail

Led by future Eagle Joe Walsh, the James Gang establishes a power-trio template for all times on its 1970 sophomore album. Home to the top-down favorite Funk #49, Rides Again sparks with a stylistic versatility, hard-rocking edge, and balladic vulnerability united by tight-knit musicianship. The quartet's penchant for crunch-laden boogies and focused jamming pours out on the first half of the record before the band pulls its trick bag out on the second half and injects keyboards into the stylistically varied mix. From start to finish, Rides Again is a 70s rock classic - and, now, one that at last features first-rate sonics to match the music.

Recorded at the then-brand-new Record Plant, the songs sound more authoritative and fun than ever before on Mobile Fidelity's restored analog pressing. Mastered from the original analog tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 4000 numbered copies, this 180g LP teems with involving textures, details, and depth hidden from view on prior pressings. The dimensional body and weight of the guitars, probing low-end of Dale Peters' bass lines, reedy timbre of Walsh's singing, and pacing of the crisp percussive cues are all enhanced. Increased separation between the instruments and airier, more open soundstaging add to the record's toe-tapping fun and seemingly unlimited groove quotient.

Walsh, without question, remains the biggest draw on Rides Again. The FM radio staple Funk #49 - kick-started by the irresistible declaration I sleep all day, out all night/I know where you're goin' - continues to be identified by many as a Walsh solo tune. Yet it, as well as the sexual thrust of the head-bobbing Woman and proto-metal slash of the multi-part The Bomber, fully represents the pure chemistry and locomotive momentum of the James Gang. With Walsh's Echoplex-equipped slide guitar making psychedelic- and blues-leaning comments, his mates pick up on the direction and answer with melodic responses.

Throughout the record, the trio's synergy clicks at every turn. Such interplay extends to the more diverse, country-tinged fare on Side B. Streaked with throaty organ passages and reflective moods, sincere midtempo ballads like Tend My Garden tease with rave-up structures and express a softer side of the group. Similarly, the acoustic-based Garden Gate and Jack Nitzsche-orchestrated Ashes the Rain and I showcase sincerity and diversity suggesting the James Gang prepared to defy limitations afforded most of its peers.

Yet Walsh's departure in 1971 changed the group's fortunes - and, by extension, upped the value of Rides Again, which survives as a near-flawless example of earnest 70s rock and organic playing.

    Man Of The World

ALO is not a band that dwells in the past. Their latest adventure, Man of the World finds the CA collective flexing their considerable creative powers to craft their finest album yet. Recorded almost entirely live, the 11-song collection is the sound of four players who have truly found their groove together. This is ALO at their most natural, their most organic and their most pure.

Man of the World was engineered by the bands steady studio partner Dave Simon-Baker and produced by none other than Jack Johnson, a longtime friend and musical collaborator. The singer/songwriter/producer was a natural fit with ALO. It felt like he joined the band for the album, drummer Dave Brogan admits. He was very hands on. If he thought he could add something to a track, he was willing to go for it. And we were more than happy to let him. For the recording, the quartet packed their bags, said goodbye to their friends and families, and headed off to Johnsons home studio on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

As they always have, they shared the songwriting and the vocal duties. Though all four members came to the studio with arrangements and parts of songs fleshed out, everything got scrambled as soon as everyone was together. There was a real workshop vibe, guitarist Lebo affirms. Arrangements were being torn apart and put back together in ways nobody could have imagined. The band had traditionally built their songs up track by track, but they abandoned that approach for a rawer, more organic, one. Songs that sprang out of the bands new recording approach span the sonic spectrum in classic ALO fashion.

The Elvis Presley/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series Continues!

Mastered by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray from the Original RCA Records Tapes/Manufactured at RTI

    Elvis' Groundbreaking Comeback Album!

Elvis Aaron Presley was born during the Great Depression into a poor family in Mississippi. They moved to Memphis during the early '50s, and as a struggling young truck driver, he cut some demos at Sun Studios as a gift for his beloved mother Gladys. These initial songs, of which he had only paid a few dollars to record, would become the catalyst that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar unlike the world has ever known!

The folks at RCA Victor knew that this young fellow named Elvis was destined for superstardom. They quickly bought out his contract and signed the legend to a long-term deal, and his first RCA single "Heartbreak Hotel" forever etched 'The King Of Rock And Roll' trademark to his name. For the remainder of the 1950's into the mid-60's, Elvis Presley would release several dozen more hit albums and smash singles, spend time in the Army, star in a plethora of top charting films, as well as sell out concert tours around the states and Canada making him the most successful solo artist of all time.

As the turbulent '60s roared on, styles of music would change and rock and roll was becoming more infused with psychedelic and harder rock elements. Elvis wasn't a follower by any means, so he got back to his roots and began another chapter of his career which many have called The Elvis "Comeback" era. First witnessed on his impeccable Elvis television program on NBC-TV in 1968, a new and exciting rock superstar was truly back to reclaim his crown.

Thanks to his chart topping smash recording of "In The Ghetto," this southern fried deep soul sounding Elvis Presley was just what the fans were screaming for and soon enough an entire album was built around this great new sound entitled From Elvis In Memphis. The 1969 album also was a blockbuster as it topped the upper rungs of the pop and country charts, making this one of his biggest albums of his career as well as one of his most revered. From Elvis In Memphis truly proved once again that his career was unlike any other in music history.

Produced by Chips Moman, the From Elvis In Memphis album takes off with the two soul stirring rockers "Wearin' That Loved On Look" and the Jerry Butler Philly groove of "Only The Strong Survive." More Elvis favorites follow with the country ballad "Long Black Limousine" and the rockin' interpretation of Hank Snow's classic "I'm Movin' On." The album also features a nice helping of solid interpretations of Elvis' own favorites like Burt Bacharach's classic "Any Day Now," the timeless "Gentle On My Mind" by John Hartford, and of course the heartfelt Mac Davis composition "In The Ghetto." In total, the album showcases twelve important Elvis Presley recordings which have truly gone onto become definitive classics by any measure of popular music.

    Love Power Peace

First Release Of 3 LP Set As Envisioned By James Brown

Includes Deluxe Jacket With Rare Photos And Liner Notes By Alan Leeds

Mastered From Brown's 1971 Mixdown Reels, Unused Until Now

James Brown's magnum opus! Love Power Peace is the sound of the Godfather and his youngblood J.B.'s (including Bootsy and Catfish Collins) electrifying a crazed Parisian audience on March 8, 1971. Sequenced and mixed by Brown himself for a planned triple album, the set was shelved when key band members departed before it could be issued. Here, for the first time, are the sides as intended, exactly as delivered by James Brown Productions to his label in 1971-a 3-LP set with each disc mastered from the original mixdown reels, and each with a unique name, Love, Power and Peace! Brown and band rip through recent singles like "Sex Machine," "Super Bad," "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose" and "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved" with a metronomic precision laid down by bassist Bootsy Collins and drummer Jabo Starks. "Ain't It Funky Now" - formerly a slow, simmering groove - is transformed into a fast, funky tour de force in which newbie Catfish Collins unleashes one of the most badass guitar solos ever, while a medley of three other Brown standards ("Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"/"I Got You (I Feel Good)"/"I Got the Feelin' ") blazes by faster than the Godfather of Soul's personal Learjet. Interspersed with just the right amount of slow numbers like "Georgia on My Mind," and including tracks from the show's supporting acts that were not included on the 1992 CD (which was a remixed, incomplete show), this document of the funk revolution features rare photos and liner notes by tour director Alan Leeds. The way to jump on board for a trip through James' world at the height of his career!

    Johnny Winter And Live

Mastered from the Original Columbia Records Tapes by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray

There are live albums, and then there are definitive live albums from the classic rock era which were events on their release. Johnny Winter And Live is one of those rare releases. Recorded during his short-lived and much revered Johnny Winter And era, this early supergroup with Rick Derringer (The McCoys, Edgar Winter Group, Steely Dan), Randy Jo Hobbs (The McCoys /Johnny Winter) and Bobby Caldwell (Captain Beyond) were known for their incredible live rock performances. Two of these phenomenal shows are captured on this historical rock album.

Bill Grahams Fillmore East in NYC and Pirates World in Florida were the settings for this live extravaganza, featuring stunning renditions of blues classics Good Morning Little School Girl and of course B.B. Kings Its My Own Fault. As a nod to his favorite rock and rollers, Johnny even found the energy for more foot stompin interpretations of tracks which became his own definitive versions like The Rolling Stones Jumpin Jack Flash and the legendary Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry. This album was so jam packed with excitement that rock radio at the time would play the entire album sides because of the ground breaking performances contained within the grooves.

Friday Music announces another installment of their Johnny Winter 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with his gold album Johnny Winter And Live. Live At The Red Garter Vol. 2

From the late '60s to the mid '90s, the Fania All Stars were probably the most important and influential group in salsa, Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican music. What began as a showcase band for a young label developed into a Latino supergroup capable of filling stadiums. The band's members were either successful bandleaders or the top musicians on their instruments at the time. As Fania Records expanded its horizons and endeavoured to reach outside its traditional Spanish speaking market in the 1970s, the All Stars became their musical ambassadors, traveling across the globe from South America to Africa to Europe spreading the salsa gospel.

But that was the future! The Fania All Stars began at the Red Garter Club in Greenwich Village. By 1967 Fania Records was on the rise and label owner Jerry Masucci was wanting to feature a showcase of all his artists, which now included long-established bandleaders Ray Barretto and Fania co-owner Johnny Pacheco, alongside the new generation (Willie Colon, Larry Harlow, Monguito, Joe Bataan, Louie Ramirez, Ralph Robles, Bobby Valentin). The idea was to record a live session which would serve as a showcase for the label using the all star format which had already proved popular by Fania's rivals Tico and Alegre.

In 1968, Masucci and popular Latin music/jazz DJ Symphony Sid talked Red Garter promoter Jack Hooke into putting on a series of nights with the Fania musicians, but to broaden the appeal of the concerts and records, a host of guest stars were added to the bill. The Live At the Red Garter Vol 2 album sleeve reads like a who's who of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican music in the late 1960s! Special guest stars include the mambo king Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri on piano and timbalero/sonero Jimmy Sabater from the million selling Joe Cuba Sextet. A supporting cast from the bands of Puente, Palmieri, Pacheco and Barretto included vocalists Ismael Miranda, Pete Conde Rodriguez, bassist Bobby Rodriguez and timbalero Orestes Vilato. A truly staggering bill though at the time, many musicians were just starting out, Willie Colon was just 18, however, almost every player present at these sessions would go on to be a salsa star in the next decade.

After Barretto's introduction, the band gets counted in and that unmistakable bassline starts, 8 bars of low-end heaven as smooth as Baileys on ice, the trademark riff to Son Cuero Y Boogaloo, a Barretto's signature tune of the period. It's much more than just a boogaloo, it's a son montuno with soul! An earlier version of the song had appeared on Barretto's album Hard Hands, but this live version smoked! After the coro and brass sections traded 8's the tension builds, then the band hits a break and timbalero Orestes Vilato comes in and blazes a monsterous solo.

The next track Noche featured its composer, pianist Larry Harlow, on a slow guajira montuno. Harlow was a non-Latino but his solo is pure Cuban proving it's not where you're from but it's how you play and what you feel that matters! The last track on the opening side was a full-on soul/funk instrumental jam called Red Garter Strut, the Fania All Stars kicking like Junior Walker or the Famous Flames! Another example of the cross-cultural experiments going on at the time in New York.

Side two is equally mixed, a Charlie Palmieri funky montuno salsa called Kikapoo Joy Juice opening the set. An uptempo dance tune with the vocalists singing in English, a sign of the times when boogaloo ruled everything in sight. Next up, If This World Were Mine, a Marvin Gaye cover featuring Joe Bataan and female vocalist La La doing their best Marvin and Tammi Tyrrell impression over a slow soulful latin-tinged groove.Richie's Bag closes side 2, written by and featuring pianist Richie Ray, another soul montuno dancefloor classic with the vocalists singing English lyrics quoting Joe Bataan's present and future hits , Gypsy woman, Subway Joe, "Ordinary Guy.

And that's it! The whole album is just 6-tracks long but it serves as a historical musical document of something new and vibrant that was evolving in Latin New York in the '60s. A coming together of black, white and brown as music crossed ethnic barriers. Music, like society, was attempting to integrate. What Masucci and Pacheco succeeded to do with this recording and Fania Records in general was to bring together the older and new generations of Latin musicians, where it became the roots of what became salsa in the next decade, whilst making the first recordings of the Fania All Stars, the band that would be most associated with spreading the music to a global audience. These reasons make this album a must for any true aficionado of Puerto Rican music from New York.

    Man-Child (Speakers Corner)

After his early avant-garde years with Blue Note Records, Herbie Hancock achieved much success with pop music fans by gradually turning towards a mixture of Afro-American styles in which he combined soul, jazz and funk. Having composed the soundtrack to Bill Cosby's animated children's show Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and released a popular family-orientated album entitled Fat Albert Rotunda, Hancock stated that instead of looking for jazz musicians who could play funky music, he had searched for funk musicians with a feeling for jazz. That this concept functions only too well is demonstrated in the funky album Man-Child, which features such brilliant jazz musicians as Wayne Shorter, Bennie Maupin and Ernie Watts. But wait! There's no narcissistic showing off here as in a jam session. The whole band performs as one, playing concentrated grooves around Hancock's carefully intertwined electronic sounds. The result is a fast-paced funky style, due to the collective efforts of the band, although each member is given ample opportunity to show off his prowess in short solo interludes and thus delight the listener with his unique style.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

1988's The Land Of Rape And Honey, Ministry's third studio LP, continued the band's stylistic journey towards a sound that was as loud, abrasive, heavy and dark as the lyrics. The mix of searing metal riffs, throbbing hardcore punk, industrial dance grooves, and diverse samples resulted a sonic arsenal of aggression and helped to redefine the sound of industrial music.

Maceo Parker was one of the most revered and loved members of James Brown's famed J.B.'s band from the late '60s to the mid-1970s. Alongside his instantly-recognizable alto saxophone solos, he occasionally performed as comedian before James Brown shows, in addition to playing MC.

He was a true renaissance man. And while other members of The Godfather of Soul's inner circle - most notably trombonist Fred Wesley - had solo albums at the advent of Brown's People Records, Maceo had to wait his turn for a couple years. By the time 1974 rolled around, this talented musician and personality could not be denied, and he burst onto the scene as a group leader with one of the most impressive albums in the People catalog: the simply titled, but deeply felt, Us.

Maceo's group (occasionally called The Macks) and Fred Wesley's J.B.'s were essentially the same unit - including guitarists Jimmy Nolen and Hearlon "Cheese" Martin, drummer John "Jabo" Starks, saxophonist St. Clair Pinckney and of course Fred Wesley on trombone. Unsurprisingly, the material here is never-endingly funky. But as shown in the song selection (presumably by Parker, with heavy-handy assistance from the
Godfather himself), there are as many ballads and soul groovers as there are straight-up funk workouts.
Cases in point include the mellow, Gamble & Huff-penned "Drowning In The Sea Of Love" (with organ, most likely played by James Brown, slithering in the background) and the syrupy "Show and Tell." The album's closer is also on the slower side, going very deep and striking a chord, as Maceo and Brown talk about conditions in the Black American landscape of the day over the course of 10-plus minutes.

And there is, of course, plenty of diesel funk here as well: singles like "Soul Power 74" and "Parrty" are downright nasty grooves, known well by James Brown fans old and new. "Soul Power 74" additionally features very early proto-sampling, with a baby's cry as well as Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have Been To The Mountain Top" speech. And Maceo's take on the J.B.'s classic "Doing It To Death" is a unique version, more muted and of course featuring Maceo's gorgeous horn front and center.

Appearing at the apex of both James Brown's and People Records' power, Us is a treasured jewel in the J.B. catalog, and rightfully so. This 150 gram vinyl LP comes in a Stoughton Jacket, housed in a custom People Records poly bag, and includes 24" x 24" poster.

This 1959 12 is made up of two distinct sessions, including Jackie McLeans first as a leader for the label. These sides helped establish him as one of the finest young alto voices on the jazz scene. Although a strong album through-and-through, the strongest material lay in the interplay between the altoist and the still under-appreciated tenor Tina Brooks. A great and unique alto/tenor tandem was born and sadly short-lived, due to Brooks demise at a young age. But the handful of selections they were able to create on this and a few other Blue Note releases are superb. Donald Byrd, Blue Mitchell, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, Sonny Clark, Kenny Drew and Billy Mitchell collectively make McLeans album debut, memorable. As part of the Classic Blue Note Signature LP Reissue Series this reissue was mastered and cut from the original analog master tapes on Classics ALL TUBE MONO cutting system and featuring authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers. This release like all in the Classic Blue Note Signature LP Series is pressed in our proprietary non-groove guard flat profile featuring the deep groove in the center label!
