    Paul's Not Home

The Pope of The Butthole Surfers and Silver Screen Legend, Gibby Haynes teams up with Jack White and Third Man Records and releases into the wilds three blasts of psychic energy in the punk rock idiom exploiting a range of subjects from, teenagers on fire, Equine love affairs, and Recession shotgun stories. Yes folks, it's the Gibby Haynes Blue Series 7'' Single on Third Man Records and it's being released on Valentines Day, 2013. For lovers.

The three-song single features two originals ''You Don't Have To Be Smart'' and ''Horse Named George,'' and a cover of Adrenalin OD's ''Paul's Not Home,'' a lost classic (cough cough... ahem) that originally appeared on the 1982 New York Thrash compilation alongside the first ever recorded material by Beastie Boys and some of the earliest known recordings by Bad Brains, Kraut and others.

180 Gram Double LP + CD

After a self-prescribed hiatus, 2012 saw Prong blow the hinges off the door with the release of "Carved Into Stone". Seemingly out of nowhere, Tommy Victor and company managed to combine all the previous elements of the band's formula: thrash, hard-core, industrial metal, etc. with a new urgency and angst that struck a deep nerve with the band's loyal fan-base and beyond.

The band marched onwards with 2014's highly acclaimed "Ruining Lives" which spawned a number of instant classics. "Turno-ver", The Barriers" and the title track became staples in their live set when embarking on a bone breaking schedule of concerts around the world in support of the record. A video for Remove, Separate Self" was released creating even more interest in this significant recording.

Recorded over the summer of 2014 and released in early 2015, Prong's cover album "Songs From The Black Hole" was loved by fans and critics alike. Always game to make the unexpected move, the album featured songs from artists as diverse as HÜsker DÜ, The Bad Brains, Black Flag, The Sisters Of Mercy and Neil Young.

After yet another headline tour, it was straight back to the studio for another studio album. Just days after mixing was completed, PRONG went on the road with Danzig and SuperJoint Ritual in North America and released the first single "Ultimate Authority" on the day the tour began.

"X - No Absolutes" is Prong at their very best. The sheer intensity and ferocity of the albums opening triumvirate "Ultimate Authority", "Sense Of Ease" and "Without Words" leaves the listener gasping for air. The title track is crunchy and catchy at the same time. "Do Nothing" may be as close as you will ever hear PRONG get to a ballad and shows the enormous progress and confidence Victor has made vocally. It is hard to find a weak spot here, notably Victor mentions that „sequencing the album was a difficult task; every song is so strong in it's own way".

Again produced by Tommy Victor, this time with trusted collaborator Chris Collier as co-producer and engineer, "X - No Absolutes" also broadens the horizon sonically.

    Bad Brains

Bad Brains is the first full-length studio album recorded by Bad Brains. Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys has been quoted as saying that this album is the best punk/hardcore album of all time. It was originally released on cassette only but has since been re-released by ROIR on both CD and vinyl.

When the album was unveiled in 1982, fans and critics alike were stunned to learn that the musicians behind this album - one of the fastest albums of all time upon its release - were religious African-American Rastafarians who also were skilled at reggae. The album was a crucial step in the formation of hardcore punk and the eventual fusion of hard rock and reggae adopted later by bands like Sublime, Fishbone, and 311.

Mention the name Bad Brains to any music fan today and you will get a jaw-dropping response! Considered by some to be the holy grail' of punk rock, Bad Brains are one of the definitive American punk groups who garner the same respect as the Sex Pistols, Black Flag, The Ramones and the The Clash. The Bad Brains iconic legacy brought a new dimension to music by melding punk and reggae into a innovative style that has yet-to-be copied. And with this new studio album, Bad Brains essentially returns to their core wit a raw analog-driven chaos produced by MCA (aka Adam Yauch) of the Beastie Boys.Build a Nation has clearly brought out the best in the band.

All original members, Dr. Know, Darryl Jennifer H.R. and Earl Hudson, deliver an explosive arsenal of riffage and bad ass bag of voices. Producer MCA recorded the album at the Beastie Boys' Oscilloscope studio in NYC. It is the first studio album released by the Oscilloscope laboratories, outside of Beastie Boys' albums. Sometimes reactionary, sometimes volatile, Bad Brains simply define the American punk experience.

    Same Thoughts Different Day

Legendary Canadian punk group Subhumans emerged from the 1978 font of creativity that produced DOA and The Pointed Sticks. They have been part of the Alternative Tentacles family since being included on the infamous Let Them Eat Jellybeans compilation and played shows with Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Black Flag, and Bad Brains.

Their first album Incorrect Thoughts was released on Vancouver label Friends Records in 1980. They always planned to make their older material available again, but a now defunct San Francisco label had issued an unauthorized version of Incorrect Thoughts in the '80s which substituted some remixes without the band's knowledge, included tracks which hadn't made the cut for the original album, and changed the cover art. It was an unpleasant mystery for the band and three decades later the former owner of that label was asserting ownership over the original album, preventing its re-release without an expensive and contentious legal tussle.

The Subhumans decided to meet the challenge to their ownership of their own material by rerecording all of the songs from the Incorrect Thoughts album, which they proceeded to do at the Hive Studios in Vancouver, assisted by Jesse Gander. Original members Brian Goble (vocals), Gerry Hannah (bass), Mike Graham (guitar), and newly-recruited drummer Jon Card (formerly with Personality Crisis, SNFU, and DOA among others) got together in 2005 to record a new album of original material, New Dark Age Parade, for Alternative Tentacles (Virus366) and the band had reactivated into a live entity. The intent was neither to slavishly recreate the old recordings nor to radically reinterpret the songs, but updating the sounds and the recording techniques while maintaining the original spirit of the album. As a bonus, Subhumans recorded six additional songs from the same period for the second 12 of a two LP set, some of which had never been recorded before!

    Spirit Electricity: Live (On Sale)

Seeing the legendary Bad Brains live is an incredible experience, and over four separate live albums, the band has never really been able to capture that experience perfectly on record...but Spirit Electricity comes close. Anchored by the bands best reggae song, The Youth Are Getting Restless, which clocks in at nearly eight minutes, the disc captures both sides of Bad Brains -- the punk legends and the lifelong reggae fans...with both sides heavily steeped in Rasta philosophy. A combined reggae cover of The Beatles' Day Tripper and the Rolling Stones' She's a Rainbow is the other gem here. The cover, a live favorite, is yet another example of how distinctive the Bad Brains sound...even if they're playing someone else's music. Guitarist Dr. Know really shines on the reggae songs, using his jazz-fusion background and unique style of rhythm playing to beautify what would otherwise be fairly harsh songs. The punk side of things is pretty righteous as well. The version of their standard Banned in D.C. found here is arguably the best recording the band has ever made, and the one-two punch of Return to Heaven and Let Me Help that kicks off the disc is incredible. Next time the band has a reunion tour (seems to happen every few years), check 'em out. If you can't do that, this is the next best thing. reggae-reviews.com

    In Search Of Black Judas

In Search of Black Judas blasts off with hardcore riffs and monstrous grooves, delivered with classic Bad Brains fire and fury and the quickness to shift into downtempo reggae passages. Its a heady and intoxicating mix of sounds that continues a quest for innovation and soulful vibes, anchored by Darryl Jenifers rock steady lines.

From the stripped down rub-a-dub of Babylon Leave Me Alone to the dark and ominous Trinity Rub, an excursion into post-punk-dub akin to PIL or The Ruts, Jenifers inventive bass builds a rock-steady foundation on each track. Black Slavery Dayz Mosh is a charging reggae groove featuring Bad Brains vocalist HRs twisted and treated vocals. With Intricate, spacious and detailed production In Search of Black Judas is an aural pleasure and long awaited addition to an already grand legacy.

Chicago's Rise Against might be seen as an outcast amongst its peers. Armed with The fury of classic punk acts such as Minor Threat & Bad Brains, they blend Intelligent vocals with a serious commitment to providing a positive alternative to the oft-dreary & disenchanted aura that engulfs most punk bands. There are so many bands that sing about negative things, & we kind of wanted to show people it's OK to voice your opinions & stay positive. We just wanted to be more productive, lyrically. - JOE PRINCIPE.

In 2005, COMEBACK KID joined VICTORY RECORDS and released the astonishing hardcore masterpiece, Wake The Dead, the follow-up to their acclaimed debut, Turn It Around. Wake The Dead was a call to arms. It was life changing and life affirming. It was the communique‚ that the restless youth of the world desperately needed. Punknews.org called it a hands-down 10 out of 10. Wake The Dead made COMEBACK KID one of the most celebrated hardcore bands of new millennium. The band responded to the call and toured the globe several times over in honest hardcore fashion. They played any festival, VFW hall and basement that would have them. Countries that do not even speak the band's language still understood the message and hailed COMEBACK KID as one of today's premier hardcore bands and made them one of the most successful bands in the genre.

The band entered 2007 with a new record that will further their message of community and strengthen the perseverance and pride of the hardcore scene. Broadcasting is the band's monstrous collection of anthems that will inspire listeners to tear into the pit, and chant along as if their lungs depended on it. Broadcasting combines breakneck hardcore punk rock in the tradition of MINOR THREAT, BAD BRAINS and 7 SECONDS with forward thinking lyrics and ferocious melodies similar to RISE AGAINST, RANCID and BAD RELIGION. It is the band's most ambitious record and was one of 2007's most anticipated releases.

    Nations To Flames

New York metal alchemists, A STORM OF LIGHT, unleash their long-anticipated new studio offering in 2013 Entitled Nations To Flames, the 11-track follow up to the band's critically-lauded 2011 opus, As The Valley Of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade, was recorded with Travis Kammeyer (OCOAI, Generation Of Vipers) at Fahrenheit Studios in Johnson City, Tennessee, mixed with Matt Bayles (Isis, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Botch, Mastodon) at Red Room Recording in Seattle, Washington and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, From Ashes Rise, Nails) at Audiosiege in Portland, Oregon. Additionally, Nations to Flames features Soundgraden's Kim Thayil and Indian/Nachtmystium's Will Lindsay on select tracks.

Centered around the apex of human failure, Nations To Flames bears witness to the fall of all governments, all nations, and all religions. The record is both musically and thematically captivating and marks the STORMcollective's darkest, most immediately punishing creation to date.

Comments A STORM OF LIGHT founding guitarist/vocalist Josh Graham "These songs are much more focused. Even the more 'epic' songs are shorter but still accomplish the same journey as the longer songs used to. We've ditched the rock elements of the last record and let our early influences of Killing Joke, Bad Brains, Metallica and Crash Worship seep in. We are bringing back the intensity of Black Ocean but with the speed and precision ore akin to our metal influences. If I'm The Devil...

letlive.'s new album, If I'm the Devil is a strident, principled and heavy work. It's also perfectly suited for someone who just wants to pound on the steering wheel after a hard day at school, work, or whatever institution happens to command most of your waking life. Just consider the name "letlive." - it's meant to be life-affirming above all else.

Frontman Jason Aalon Bulter has an ambitious nature which takes him to extremely lofty places. He acknowledges that letlive. is a punk band and one that reflects humanity
as a collection of emotional, frontal-lobe beings. At the same time, he fully believes that letlive. can access that utopian, inexplicable transcendental quality that allows art
to reach budding revolutionaries the way books and other oratory cannot.

letlive. continually refuse to be constrainedby the ideas of "scene" - whether letlive. is punk, metalcore, indie, rap, whatever, Butler finds these labels to be another form of systematic oppression. He grew up with Black Flag and Circle Jerks as well as 2Pacalypse and Xzibit's At the Speed of Life - it's all revolutionary counterculture music to him.

"Punk is more an ideology than a scene dictated by what pants you wear. What are you saying, what do you believe in? That's to me a better identifier." If their new album, If I'm the Devil needs a genre, Butler would call it "revolutionary counterculture music" , like a more emotional Rage Against the Machine, or Public Enemy with more inclusive politics. Butler grew up as a skater disillusioned with what he saw as a heteronormative, patriarchal punk rock scene until the older kids showed him black artists such as Bad Brains, Living Colour and Fishbone. "Punk rock is inclusive if you want to be included," Butler states, recognizing how letlive. can speak for people who feel they lack representation.

    The Order Of Time

Valerie June's highly anticipated second album, The Order of Time, is set for release via Concord Records. On this enthralling and illuminating leap forward, the Tennessee-bred, Brooklyn-based songwriter weaves electric blues, African rhythms, cosmic atmospherics and delicate soul into an inventive and wholly original rumination on love, family, struggle and the passing of time. Produced by Matt Marinelli (Bad Brains), The Order of Time features twelve original songs all written by June.

Musically, June has refined and expanded her sound on the new album finding space from her previous work in its artful, self-assured restraint and overall cohesion. The collection's finely sketched character studies brim with richness and detail while June's ethereal, wide-open soundscapes provide a sterling backdrop for her remarkable Southern gospel and honey voice. Lyrical touch points such as 'dancing shadows,' 'hot suppers,' 'curious neighbors,' and 'holy water' draw the listener in and root these songs with density and weight.

The "inevitability of change" and "time as the ruler of Earth's rhythm," is the album's foundation, explains June. "And the knowledge that with resilience and faith things can work out."

"Long Lonely Road" is a reflective and somber lament as June's voice reverberates over ringing guitar and unhurried drums, whereas the entrancing blues of "If And" internalizes regret in the face of time's relentless churn. On the spiritual "Astral Plane," June's mystical vocal takes an otherworldly turn, whereas the sumptuous string arrangement on "With You," is reminiscent of Nico's most affecting work. Norah Jones adds her distinctive vocals to three tracks and "Shake Down" sparkles with background vocal contributions from her father, Emerson Hockett and brothers, Patrick and Jason Hockett.

The Order of Time follows June's 2013 breakout LP, Pushin' Against a Stone that established her as one of America's "most intriguing, fully formed new talents" according to the New York Times. She garnered praise from NPR, "a singular performer" and New York Magazine, "a powerful singer and a blunt, bruising songwriter." June also made memorable appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, CBS Saturday Morning, Rachael Ray, and Austin City Limits. She has toured with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings and Sturgill Simpson, and performed at Newport Folk Festival, Carnegie Hall, and much more.

Be careful. You can't unlearn information. I think that the best that you can hope for is a bad memory, but our brains are very remarkable and it is very difficult to actually unlearn something. I came upon this realization too late to help me with visual arts. I had already been taught about proportions and perspective. It's very hard to draw someone in the background larger than their friend in the foreground. Anyone farther away would look smaller. That is how our eyes see them and my brain knows this. I cannot turn off this knowledge and draw it the other way around. I can choose to ignore it, but that is not the same. That is a strategy for dealing with the situation, but not as freeing as simple ignorance would be. It is a nagging strategy that whispers the rules and acknowledges your participation in their breaking.

Luckily, with music, I do not carry the burden of knowledge. I was not educated in its terms and rules. I am not bound by its limits.

I know that I have guitar skills. I have played around with one enough to know what feels right to me. If I were to turn it upside down and attempt to play it in a left-handed manner, my ability would feel awkward and diminished. I am not unskilled; I am merely untrained. For me, this is the ideal situation. Others may prefer acquiring rules and limits. I prefer that my art be directed by my heart rather than my brain.

I have played in bands for nearly 40 years. In all of that time I have only learned three chords. I have resisted acquiring more. If I continue at this rate I am at risk of knowing six chords forty years from now. Instead, I am consciously slowing down. Hopefully in four decades I will remember even less about music convention than I know today.

Forty years is a long time to wait. In the meantime, here's Half Japanese Vol 2. It might get better in the future, but Vol 2 is here already.

    Band Of Outsiders

Limited Edition Black And Red Splattered Vinyl

When jazz hits you in the face with a stack of bricks, Mike Dillon is there...twisting chaos into order before turning it back on itself again. -Splinters & Candy

The Mike Dillon Band is a predictably gruesome and sublime elixir of stealthy jazz vibes, street poetry raps and post-punk sonic carnage. -Boulder Weekly

A body in motion tends to stay in motion, at least when The Mike Dillon Band is supplying the dance music. The psychedelic rock group shakes and gyrates with heavy, vibraphone driven grooves, delivering a steady stream of infectious rhythms and hypnotic percussion. -Pittsburgh City Paper

How many artists can claim being praised a punk rock provocateur, jazz vibraphone visionary and percussion virtuoso in the same sentence? There's only one: Mike Dillon. Whether through his affiliation with artists like Les Claypool, Brave Combo and Ani DiFranco, collaborations such as Garage A Trois, The Dead Kenny Gs and Critters Buggin or bands he's fronted, including Billy Goat and Hairy Apes BMX, the Texas-native has set his own standard for 25 years now.

With his latest effort, Band of Outsiders-released via Brooklyn label The Royal Potato Family-Mike Dillon has conjured the perfect storm of all these past endeavors. His manic creative vision found its match in three young musicians he met in New Orleans. Carly Meyers-whom Dillon describes as "a High Priestess of Trombone who channels the energy of Iggy Pop through the chops of JJ Johnson in second-line parade"-provides harmonic counterpoint to his vibes and percussion ("All Walks of Life") as she simultaneously ups the band's art-rock ante ("Carly Hates The Dubstep"). The rhythm section of bassist Patrick McDevitt and drummer Adam Gertner turns on a dime between snarling punk rock assaults ("Homeland Insecurity"), deep funky go-go ("Head"), ska grooves ("Here The Burro") and experimental hip-hop beats ("7AM At The Jazzfest") with all points covered in between.

Dillon recorded Band of Outsiders at Studio Center in Miami with the help of co-producers Gary Vandy and Richard Maloney Jr. Vandy is an old school engineer whose work includes over 200 platinum records predominantly in the disco and dance genres. His love of Zappa is what attracted him to Dillon's work. In the age of pro-tools chicanery, the production is straightforward, capturing Dillon and his band playing live in a room.

"Two tours of Mexico and a steady dose of Brazilian music was the jumping off point for these new songs," explains Dillon. "Add our love for The Melvins, Deerhoof, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Trouble Funk and all things New Orleans and this album surpasses our intention to make the freakiest, most vibrant dance music on the planet."

Lyrically speaking, Mike Dillon draws from his love of Miguel de Cervantes, William Burroughs, Kurt Vonnegut and Robert Anton Wilson to tell stories of New Orleans debauchery mixed with age-old themes of travel, love, self-destruction and greed. Delivered with Dillon's trademark vocal rasp, the record has the intensity of a Tom Waits-meets-Frank Zappa black comedy. Rumor has it that Dillon lived for the past seven years in the same apartment that Waits shared with Rickie Lee Jones. Dillon discounts those rumors: This apartment has housed dudes from Morning 40 Federation, Ani DiFranco, an old Conga player and a bunch of heroin addicts."

Taken in its entirety, Mike Dillon's Band of Outsiders is a snapshot of four musicians hitting full stride. Having relentlessly toured the country in 2013-both headlining and opening for artists like Fishbone, Clutch, Primus and Galactic-its 13 songs bristle with a group mind, spill over the sides with the visions invoked during countless dead-of-night drives crisscrossing the country in a van and hit their target with a sonic assault only possible from a band that's played 400-plus shows over the last two years.

"People are always trying to figure out how to describe our music. Maybe we should call it New Orleans punk jazz Brazilian math rock? It's a gumbo of tribal percussion, The Meters, old school hardcore, Brazil, hard bop and anything else that might move us," concludes Dillon. "But you know, I really don't care what you call it. We kick out the jams harder than anyone, and we also know when to heed the lessons of The Minutemen's Double Nickels On The Dime and keep things straight to the point. There's a reason we called the record what we did. We're the living, breathing definition of a band of outsiders, but together we deliver simple majestic beauty, let's leave it at that."

    Tookah

Tookah is Emiliana Torrini's fourth album and it follows 2008's critically acclaimed Me And Armini. It sees Emiliana back in the studio with her long-time producer/collaborator Dan Carey.

'Tookah' was written at different stages over a 3 year period, the oldest song being "When Fever Breaks" which was written having come off a tough two year tour which took it's toll in many ways.

"The only way to deal with things is to go into the studio and do music, it is like brain scrambling. You come out of the session clearer as you get to step out of yourself take a look and deal with it."

Other songs like 'Autumn Sun' were written in Iceland.

"We had done that before, gone on a week's writing trip to Iceland, wrote five songs in that week which all made it onto ´Me and Armini´. We were kind of expecting the same to happen. It didn´t. We only wrote 'Autumn Sun'. It was extremely frustrating. Lyrics were hard to write for this album and I spent day and night trying to finish it - with Dan standing over me in military mode. The only time in my life I did not like him much."

On the airplane we realized Dan had left his computer at the airport - it had the only copy of the song. He ran out to find it and just made it back just before the doors closed. We had a terrifying landing that almost ended badly. We grabbed each other and the only thing we said was "Nooo the song! It will be lost forever!"

This record was my sound journey. I had not long had my baby and was getting my head around this huge love I had for him and then being absolutely devastated that I might have dragged him out of a world where he was wild and free, riding horses, swimming in rivers and eating over open fires, to this world where the bad is too much to handle. I had a new identity to figure out and the record was the tiger in the rowing boat. It was going nowhere. I did not like the music we were doing because we had done it before. We knew how to craft that. I needed a challenge, proof that something in me had shifted and it had to be musically as well. I was driving myself too hard.

Dan told me I was not ready to make a record, that I should forget about it for a while, just hang out.

So, we started hanging out, in the studio. In my head the difference was we were not making a record. I discovered the Oberheim on Youtube and that changed everything. That and the Swarmatron Dan had bought. We knew we would plaster it all over the record before we knew what the record was.

I pulled some friends together I was writing with Simon Byrt, ("Blood Red", "Elísabet"), Ian kellett (´Elísabet) and Matt Robertson who are real synth nerds and we started playing around and having fun. We went to Dan´s and jammed and started doing some synth symphonies.

After you have a baby there comes a time where you need to go out with your girlfriends and dance. I went to the studio with Dan and did a dance track "Speed of Dark." We danced. It had to be on the record it was a part of the journey. From that the sound of the record was born, it was a challenge bringing it all together.

The sound was worked very visually. There are almost two stories to each song there is the lyrical visual and then there is a whole different visual that comes with the instrumental and that is how the sound was often directed. "Home" is a very good example of how the sound was built from a visual. When we were writing it, it was clear it had to have a very certain feeling. ´I wanted it to have the visual of you standing in snow blinding white, watching your breath in the cold, not feeling the cold. You look to your left and a lake stretches out frozen and huge. You walk over it to the other side into a forest, you lose direction. Completely lost and helpless. Fireworks start lighting up the sky and you feel a wave of relief. You walk towards them. In the king blue sky they start changing into jelly fish in neon flashing colours, leading the way to home.´ We did not stop until we saw that when playing it.

'Tookah' is a made up word. It came when I was improvising and I connected with that word or name in a very deep blissful way. It is the core of you. The 'you' you were when you were born, before life decorated you like a Christmas tree with all the baggage. It is what connects us with everyone and everything.

It is what the sufis spin for, what we are looking for all our lives. It is the sudden thankfulness you feel when doing nothing in particular, where everything is gently perfect for a moment. God has many names. I call mine 'Tookah'.
