    Avalon

Flesh + Blood suggested that Roxy Music were at the end of the line, but they regrouped and recorded the lovely Avalon, one of their finest albums. Certainly, the lush, elegant soundscapes of Avalon are far removed from the edgy avant-pop of their early records, yet it represents another landmark in their career. With its stylish, romantic washes of synthesizers and Bryan Ferry's elegant, seductive croon, Avalon simultaneously functioned as sophisticated make-out music for yuppies and as the maturation of synth pop. Ferry was never this romantic or seductive, either with Roxy or as a solo artist, and Avalon shimmers with elegance in both its music and its lyrics. More Than This, Take a Chance with Me, While My Heart Is Still Beating, and the title track are immaculately crafted and subtle songs, where the shifting synthesizers and murmured vocals gradually reveal the melodies. It's a rich, textured album and a graceful way to end the band's career.

    Birds Of Avalon

Comes with a digital download card! On 180 gram vinyl with 3-D artwork (3-D glasses included).

Birds of Avalon is a psych rock band from Raleigh, NC. They are a band's band, with people like Ted Leo, Kliph Scurlock (Flaming Lips) and Ryan Adams singing their praises. Their new album is another analog-only collaboration with Mitch Easter (REM, Wilco, Pavement) that builds on the pop aesthetic of Bazaar Bazaar but blazes new progressive trails while anticipating the psychedelic experimentation of Uncanny Valley.

    Captain Beefheart Live 1966-67

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band are firmly established as one of the most imaginative acts to have emerged from late-'60s America. The historically vital recordings preserved on this set -- a live set captured from Avalon Ballroom in 1966 and a radio station set from 1967 -- capture Beefheart and his musicians as they emerge from their blues-based beginnings and begin to evolve into something far stranger.

    Side Trips

Like a mind-boggling combination of Summer of Love acid-rock, good time saloon music and a Middle Eastern jam session, Side Trips, the debut album by Kaleidoscope, stood out, even in the eye of the psychedelic hurricane, as something altogether different! Staffed by a hall of fame roster of multi-instrumentalists -David Lindley, Chris Darrow, Solomon Feldthouse, Chester Crill (aka: Fenrus Epp) and John Vidican-this San Gabriel Valley, Calif.-based combo cut their dazzling 1967 album with a startling arsenal of instruments that included banjo, fiddle, doumbeg, mandolin, viola, saz, bouzoukee, dobro, vina, authoharp, oud and clarinet. When they entertained the wide-eyed customers of San Francisco's Fillmore and Avalon Ballrooms and Los Angeles' Ash Grove, they frequently employed flamenco and belly dancers onstage. Just like the see-through tube with bits of colored glass and mirrors that gave the band their name, the Kaleidoscope was never the same, no matter which way you turned it!

    Hold That Tiger!

Introduced into the music business by Frankie Avalon at a time when record producers were looking to the South Philadelphia neighborhoods in search of teenage talents with good looks, Fabian Forte mainly began singing as a way to support his family, due to his father's illness. Backed by songwriters Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, Fabian had soon released a series of hit singles on Chancellor Records, while his debut album Hold That Tiger! climbed to #5 on the US charts. Although never the greatest of singers (he would find greater success as an actor), during the late 50's Fabian was projected as something of a teen idol, helped by a string of hits and numerous appearances on American television.

    Live

Sundazed Music is proud to present a genuine psychedelic landmark: Live by Moby Grape, the first official collection of concert recordings by the legendary San Francisco band at its blazing late-Sixties peak. At that time, in rock's hippest city, there was no other band like the original Grape: Jerry Miller, Skip Spence, Bob Mosley, Peter Lewis and Don Stevenson. Their Columbia debut LP, Moby Grape, issued in June 1967, is still acclaimed as one of the greatest rock albums evera thrilling union of blues, soul, country, surf twang and day-glo garage rock, packed into original killer-pop songwriting. Even as extreme Columbia hype, devastating business hassles and Spence's tragic mental collapse threatened to blow up the band, the Grape continued to make immortal albums, including 1968's Wow and the magnificent Moby Grape '69.

But the records told only half of the tale. Moby Grape, in their prime, were also one of the Bay Area'sand America'sbest stage bands, like the Beatles and Rolling Stones in one, with a breathtaking triple-guitar attack and stunning vocal harmonies.

Live is the long-awaited proof. It features more than an hour of dynamite performances from soundboard and broadcast tapes, including tracks from the Avalon Ballroom in 1967 and the band's complete long-lost set at the Monterey Pop Festival, just a week after Moby Grape came out. There are live versions of the great rare Grape songs Rounder and Looper and five tracks from a famous Dutch radio show featuring the hard-charging '69 lineup of Miller, Mosley, Lewis and Stevenson.

And Live climaxes with the historic first-ever release of Spence's acid-guitar masterpiece Dark Magicnever recorded in the studio by the original band but presented here in an epic 17-minute performance at the Avalon, on New Year's Eve 1966. Moby Grape were the hottest band in town that night, with the whole rock & roll world ahead of them. And they sound like it. These four-decade-old recordings have been spectacularly mastered, in you-are-there fidelity, and this album comes with sumptuous packaging and rare photos, in true Sundazed style, plus liner notes by Rolling Stone writer and Moby Grape authority David Fricke. Live presents, at last, the untold part of Moby Grape's incredible story. It is San Francisco psychedelia at its zenith and the best historical rock release of the year.

    Rockius Of Levitatum

To fully understand and appreciate a band like the 13th Floor Elevators, one had to see them play live, preferably more than once. The reason being that no two Elevators shows were ever alike, ranging from brilliantly euphoric to unbelievably catastrophic. Of course, the unevenness of their performances was due to one small but powerful thing called LSD which the band took in copious amounts prior to each show.

This collection of live tracks gives those of us who weren't there during those halcyon days of psychedelia, a taste of just what lofty heights (and hellish depths) the Elevators were capable of reaching. The performances are taken from three sources: Roller Coaster, You're Gonna Miss Me and Tried to Hide from a rockin' appearance on a local Dallas/Ft. Worth television show in the spring of 1966; Don't Fall Down, Kingdom Of Heaven, She Lives In A Time of Her Own and I've Got Levitation from a notoriously shambolic gig in Houston in 1967; and the remaining eight tracks from a series of stellar performances at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom in autumn of 1966.

    The Cosmic Scene (Pure Pleasure)

Still riding the success of his triumphant concert at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, Duke Ellington in 1958 decided to reduce his touring orchestra to a nonet dubbed the Spacemen, and recorded this lone project with them for the Columbia label. Perhaps inspired by the first orbiting satellites, Ellington is not taking cues from George Russell or Sun Ra, whose extraterrestrial inspirations led them to even more progressive paths. This large ensemble is playing mostly standards, but the arrangements and solos carve an integrated yet elasticized concept that allows for a more expanded role for the ensemble's trombonists Quentin 'Butter' Jackson, John Sanders, and Britt Woodman, and select soloists. One in the solo spotlight is Clark Terry on flugelhorn exclusively, putting his fabled trumpet aside. The classic material presented includes clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton's features Avalon and Early Autumn, the slinky stripper pole blues version of St. Louis Blues with Ellington's piano taking the lead, and a version of Body & Soul, with tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves completely extrapolating and re-harmonizing the tune. There's a modified Perdido, an animated and perky Midnight Sun that deviates from any other slow and lugubrious version of the ballad, and Jones a real good swinger. There are two originals; the blues bass of Jimmy Woode and the 'bones with plentiful piano from Duke infusing Bass-Ment, and one of the more delightful of all of Ellington's book, the poppin' and boppin' Spacemen, a bright happy horn chart led by Terry that is one of the more distinctive Ellington numbers of this time period. It comes highly recommended.

    Musicians:

    • Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone)

    • Clark Terry (fluegel horn)

    • Britt Woodman, John Sanders, Quentin Jackson (trombone)

    • Jimmy Hamilton (clarinet)

    • Duke Ellington (piano)

    • Jimmy Wood (bass)

    • Sam Woodyard (drums)

Recording: April 1958 at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Photo Finish Records presents Beautiful Things, the new solo release from Circa Survive frontman Anthony Green and follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2008 debut album Avalon. Beautiful Things was recorded at The Big House in the sleepy beach town of Avalon, New Jersey, with backing and additional production from Green's fellow Philadelphians, Good Old War. In addition, the album sees guest appearances from such like-minded artists as Ida Maria, Lights, Maps & Atlases guitarist Dave Davison, Claire Wadsworth, Circa Survive comrades Brendan Ekstrom and Colin Frangicetto, and a couple other surprises.

    The Mask And The Mirror

The Mask and Mirror contains songs that lift the veil to reveal the soul of McKennitt's work in eight dreamlike, Celticinspired tracks. The opening track, The Mystic's Dream (featured on the TNT movie The Mists of Avalon), is a haunting tune that features McKennitt at her most heavenly peak as a vocalist, evoking the spirits of the instruments and Gregorian chant-like background vocals that accompany her on the track.

    Beyond Wilderness

Beyond Wilderness is the debut full-length from Vancouver four-piece Gold & Youth, available May 14, 2013.

The album was produced and recorded by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, New Pornographers, Dan Mangan) and mixed by Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Interpol, Grizzly Bear).

Gold & Youth is Matthew Lyall, Murray Mckenzie, Jeff Mitchelmore and Louise Burns.

Beyond Wilderness is built with dark, expansive synthetic textures, punctuated by programmed drums and interwoven with melancholy vocals, detuned synth melodies and understated guitars.

The result is an album with varied sounds, ranging from the cold, industrial sounds of Depeche Mode to the tenderness of Avalon-era Roxy Music.

This unique session contains five selections from a date featuring the great tenor Coleman Hawkins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Shelly Manne. Both Take the 'A' Train and Cherokee find the group at times playing two tempos at once and showing that they had heard some of the avant-garde players. The most swinging piece, Avalon, was previously available only on a sampler while Me and Some Drums features Hawkins and Manne in a very effective duet with the veteran tenor making his only recorded appearance on piano during the first half. The set is rounded out by a pair of trio features for Eddie Costa (with Duvivier and Manne); one song apiece on vibes and drums. A very interesting set with more than its share of surprises.

    Popular Songs

Finally back in print, the double vinyl of Yo La Tengo's most recent album, Popular Songs!

The sprawling, 12-track record (including three songs over 8 minutes in length, and one 15 minute jam) is one of their most eclectic and cathartic.

Featuring the Parisian pop of "Avalon or Someone Very Similar," the joyous rocker "Nothing To Hide" and the whimsical "Periodically Double Or Triple."

Recorded in Hoboken and Nashville in early 2009 with longtime associate Roger Mountenot, Popular Songs finds the trio of Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew at the height of their creative powers, fashioning an epic work that's cooly confident as it is wildly adventurous.

In the words of Mike Wolf, "Yo La Tengo is not afraid. They walk confidently forward, into the unknown, hand in hand. They may just be hitting their stride."

    The Black Chord

Born in San Diego but bred in the mists of Avalon, Astra have fast-become a synonym for the ethereal, the sublime, and indeed the genuinely progressive. Ever since 2009's The Weirding put these analog-inflected San Diego visionaries on the map alongside the likes of co-conspirators Earthless, Diagonal and Dungen, who like some lost tribe of prog faithful - have brought this unwieldly and much maligned form of music out of the dark ages and in front of a new generation of mellotron-loving cognoscenti.

Limited gatefold special die cut vinyl edition with attached booklet

Think wailing guitars and dulcet harmonies thickened by Mellotrons and given hypnotic qualities by the kind of drumming that borders on the shamanic. Cinematic in scope but frequently yielding to a kind of melodic fragility that can only be the product of genuine emotion. The Black Chords musical ebb and flow prove Astra to be both a bands band capable fo an artistry all too rare among their generation, and it's a sound to behold.

The jam session recording Chester & Lester was awarded a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance at the 1976 awards ceremony.

Chester & Lester was probably the only jam session record to win a Grammy™. Today, such an album would merely seem like clever marketing; two virtuosos from different genres, country and pop, joining forces. Not so in 1976. Truth was, Chet Atkins and Les Paul had way more in common than many realized. Each made groundbreaking records that put electric guitars on the map and influenced the sound of rock. Both experimented with electronics. The electric guitar models named for both men over half a century ago are considered classics, still produced today by the same companies. Three decades can't diminish Chester & Lester's wonderfully free musical and personal interplay. On record, their divergent personalities were reflected in their verbal bantering, Chet's taciturn personality and dry humor a terrific foil for Les's ornery schoolkid exuberance. It was something both admired about the record.

Chester & Lester is a beautiful and fun album by two masters. It was recorded in the mid-'70s when Chet Atkins was in his fifties and Les Paul was in his sixties. The latter had been in retirement for a decade before the recording of this album. Nashville studio musicians, including Randy Goodrum on piano and Larrie Londin on drums, back up the master guitarists, but this is by no means a country album. In fact, this album swings on classics such as Birth of the Blues, Avalon, and Caravan. Other classic songs, including It's Been a Long Time and It Had to Be You, are beautifully rendered, featuring Les Paul's instantly recognizable ringing bell tone and Chet Atkins' fluid, slightly twangy sound. The recording has an informal feel, with between-song banter (and even some joking in the middle of songs) included on the record, which adds to the enjoyment and warmth of this album. The listener knows that the musicians are having a great time. According to the liner notes, only two songs have any overdubs, so, You hear the music just as it came down. And it all came down beautifully. - Tim Griggs, allmusic.com
