    Parallax

Welcome to Parallax, the third long player from Atlas Sound, the ever expansive solo project from Bradford Cox of Deerhunter. Atlas Sound is not a side-project but rather a fully fleshed musical landscape chock-full of pop chronicles culled from sci-fi fever dreams and mid century rock. This is perhaps Coxs best work to date, juxtaposing his modern, sometimes avant, songwriting sensibilities against a backdrop of ambient lonliness and a quiet feeling of desperation. The artwork and photos were done by Mick Rock, the legendary photographer best known for his work with David Bowie.

Let the album unfurl slowly, listen repeatedly and it will reveal itself in all its intricate resplendence.

Let's get down to brass tacks: Ridgewood, NJ's Real Estate took a mighty leap
forward on their last go-around... more record sales... bigger shows... and, more
importantly, a timeless classic of an album, Days. It's been two years since the
release of Days, and it's an album that still sounds as fresh today as it did on
release date. Their new album, Atlas, builds upon the lush guitar warmth of Days
while adding more powerful harmonies and keyboard flourishes bringing even more
    depth to their heart-warming sound.

Atlas was recorded over the summer at Wilco's Chicago recording studio, The Loft,
with producer/mixer Tom Schick (Wilco, Rufus Wainwright, Alex Chilton), and while
this pairing that looks so good on paper, sounds even better on record!
Real Estate kick off the campaign with the dreamy pop single "Talking Backwards,"
which was released as a limited edition 7"at the end of February.

Imagene Peise - Atlas Eets Christmas

ATLAST EETS CHRISTMAS was previously released in a very limited physical quantity on CD only under the pseudonym Imagene Peise (with a sticker that read Love Is The Answer - Merry Christmas From The Flaming Lips 2007). The pseudonym Imagene Peise is a John Lennon-esque spelling of Imagine Peace, ala Lennon's wonsaponatime, and likewise the album title sounds-out At last, it's Christmas. The alias credits are similarly punning: Imagene Peise - Piano Ominog Bangh - Laughing/Crying Glider Synthesizer Shineyu Bhupal - Drones, Sitar, and Baritone Tambura.

From the Flaming Lips' presumably vast vault of curiosities comes Atlas Eets Christmas, a psych-jazz piano album that originally appeared in a very limited run under the pseudonym Imagene Peise during the 2007 holiday season. Billed as a lost album by a mysterious young Iraqi piano prodigy name Peise who committed suicide in 1978, the album plays like the soundtrack to some sort of unearthed educational filmstrip where science meets Santa.

The same could be said about much of the Lips' more experimental output, which does include other Yuletide offerings, most notably the soundtrack to their 2008 film Christmas on Mars. Almost entirely instrumental and buried under the weight of a fabricated faux-vinyl crackle, Atlas frames their lovely piano arrangements of such classics as Winter Wonderland, Do You Hear What I Hear?, and White Christmas with buzzing sitars, spacy electronic noises, distant synths, and the band's hallmark Mellotron drones.

The result is a warmly intended yet moon-cold Christmas album that is still surprisingly pleasant. Although Wayne Coyne does make his presence known singing lead on the Vince Guaraldi-esque title cut (most likely through an old telephone from his home office on Mars), this largely seems to be the baby of multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd, whose graceful piano playing makes up the bulk of this unusual venture.

    Monomania

After a brief hiatus following the success of third album Halcyon Digest, during which time Bradford Cox and Lockett Pundt released their own albums as Atlas Sound and Lotus Plaza respectively, a new Deerhunter line-up (with additions of bassist Josh Mckay and guitarist Frankie Broyles) reconvened in January 2013 at Rare Book Studio in Brooklyn, New York. Produced by Nicholas Vernhes and Bradford Cox and recorded in the dead of night, Deerhunter's new longplayer Monomania will be released on 7th May. Monomania finds the group recalling its scrappy punk aesthetic; a perfect nocturnal garage rock album full of the layered and hazy vintage guitar sounds that define them.

    On The Impossible Past

Scranton-raised, Philadelphia-based punk rock outfit The Menzingers drop their Epitaph debut On the Impossible Past, after two acclaimed albums on small indies. The bands fiery early releases and dynamic live performances supporting Anti-Flag and Against Me! have created a serious buzz and landed the group on several best of lists.

The band caught the attention of Epitaph founder and President Brett Gurewitz, who says, These guys play the kind of pure punk rock that I grew up with. They are seriously talented songwriters and Im happy to welcome them to the Epitaph family. I think the band is a great fit here.

Their high energy sound features crashing power chords, rock steady drumming and anthemic sing-along choruses alongside poetic salt of the earth lyrics in the vein of Against Me! and Gaslight Anthem. Recorded and produced at Atlas Studios with longtime collaborators Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, The Lawrence Arms) and Justin Yates.

    Weather Codes

Weather Codes is the second album from Texan songstress Teresa Maldonado. Following the magical debut The Mammoth Sessions, the album is a study in heartbreak and loneliness set amidst the backdrop of the vast landscapes of American Southwest. Drawing influences from her perennial favourites the darkly gothic Bauhaus, as well as Natacha Atlas' exotic Mish Maoul, the black metal of Venom, Leslie Gore's protofeminist You Don't Own Me and the psych folk of early Will Oldham. If you listen really carefully you can also hear the swirling sand and the rustling wind in the baking heat of the Texas summer.

Teresa recorded most of the songs at night with her blackmouth cur by her side. They were initially composed on her much loved piano which was in need of some tuning. Having not been tuned since around 1992, the piano had been moved from place to place too many times to count but lent a fractured beauty to her creations. From the early versions on the piano, she started to venture into the more electronic side of music mixing styles and sounds to create a marvelously eclectic collection of songs.

Maldonado began writing Weather Codes during a messy relationship and amassed over forty songs, which she whittled down to fourteen forlorn and haunting tracks. The relationship started during her back and forth travels between Texas and Louisiana, and the album sees her bringing the landscape vividly to life. The little towns and their secrets. With tall tales that can be heard in tracks such as A Long Ride Home and Weather Codes Part 3. Everything else was turned in to a play of sorts with characters and veils; the tiring Texan veils of keeping up a smile when in public, even when leading a sad existence.
