    Ark

Byron Bay's In Hearts Wake have been changing minds and lives since 2012, and with fourth album Ark, they are looking to inspire change like never before. Musically, this album pays homage to the past as much as it signals a bright new future for conscious heavy music; as a statement, Ark simultaneously lives within the lineage of Australian hardcore and lights the way forward beyond Southern skies.

Ark is both a dynamic breath of fresh air for the metalcore genre as a whole and a treatise on one of the world's great impending issues. Today, in some parts of the world, water is already more expensive than oil, a trend that is spreading. In Hearts Wake - comprising frontman Jake Taylor, guitarists Ben Nairne and Eaven Dall, bassist Kyle Erich and drummer Conor Ward - are bringing this distressing issue to the world's attention.

    Noah's Ark

Since the mysterious and beautiful La Maison de Mon Reve surfaced in early 2004, CocoRosie have spent months traveling the world with the likes of Bright Eyes, TV On The Radio, Antony And The Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, and Blonde Redhead. Along the way, Noah's Ark took shape, where heart-offerings of friends, family, loved ones and lost ones surface gracefully, contributing depth to the narrative journey. Noah's Ark is the result of a rootless reality, a drifting consciousness across state lines, date lines, time lines...connected to the past, vague about the future. But the heart of these songs is always issued from a tender present.

    The Ark Work

Liturgy is a Brooklyn-based, self-styled "Transcendental Black Metal" band whose yearning, energetic music exists in an uncanny space between avant rock, black metal, fine art and shamanic ritual. Led by songwriter and conceptual architect Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, who is joined by guitarist Bernard Gann, bassist Tyler Dusenbury and drummer Greg Fox, the band exists as a 21st century total work of art (gesamtkunstwerk): activating divine potencies by means of music and culture even as it underscores the contradictions inherent in such a project during the internet era. Their third full length, The Ark Work, is a quantum leap forward, a radical change in sound that paradoxically sounds more like Liturgy than ever. The album hums and churns with Hunt-Hendrix's inventive arrangements - drenched with glockenspiels, bagpipes, strings, ritual chanting, and MIDI horns. It supplements its metal energy with motifs from unlikely, disparate genres; cross-fertilizing hardstyle beats, occult-oriented rap, and the glitched re-sampling of IDM with structures from Medieval sacred music, Romantic classical music, and minimalism. The result is a rich, seething cyber-fantasia that is improbably listenable, conveying the disarming, authentic emotion that is Liturgy's hallmark - a blend of startling invention, high caliber musicianship, raw energy, and profound, cosmic sadness. The result is the first true sonic realization of Transcendental Black Metal: a musically cohesive alchemical fusion, an artistically reflexive work of theandery, and a mind-bending album that is as original as it is beautiful.

Oh, by now, I must have grown, Alessi Laurent-Marke croons beautifully, four songs into her stunning sophomore album Time Travel.

And hasn't she just - not yet 21 but already a seasoned pro, having recorded her debut album aged just 17, with members of Bright Eyes, and touring with the likes of Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and Brighton cult faves the Willkommen Collective. Time Travel is the first Alessi's Ark album since signing to Bella Union, where her acutely melodic and exquisitely tender folk-pop charms haven't just grown; they've blossomed into something extraordinarily mature.

1976 proved to be a defining year for Lee Scratch Perry. A deal with Island Records meant that his 3
albums and a dozen singles received the marketing and promotion from the coolest label in the
mainstream UK & US markets. Perry himself was in creative overdrive: he used Island's advances to
buy the latest studio technology for the young Black Ark Studio which enabled him to continually
develop his production signatures. Now, some 37 years later, Roaring Lion delivers unknown tunes
and mixes from that crucial year. With a dozen tracks straight off a single master tape our set offers a unique snap-shot of Perry's creative vibrations as Producer, and re-mixer, to the
rising cultural religion of Rasta. The Black Ark was peaking in the red as he revved himself to full throttle and created his finest ever work.

"The Breadwinners" is the name for Mancunian multi-instrumentalist, composer, engineer and
producer Alan Redfern, and a cast of guests that includes Big Youth on one track. Redfern's growing
reputation has led him to mixing some of Gregory Isaacs' very last recordings, produced by Sly &
Robbie, which are unreleased to date but have earned Sly & Robbie's approval. Working in his all-analogue studio, equipped with specific pieces of
hardware associated with Lee "Scratch" Perry's
unique Black Ark sound, in particular the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase and Roland Space Echo, Redfern has produced hundreds of tracks over the past 5 or 6 years. Some of the best are presented here on the "Dubs Unlimited" album.

Few artists enjoy a legacy that involves a re-engineering of the very genre in which they work. Lee Scratch Perry is such an artist. As a pioneer of dub reggae Perry viewed the mixing console as musical instrument in its own right. The influence of his revolutionary approach has been felt world-wide and into genres far beyond reggae. His 1976 effort, Super Ape, is considered a masterpiece of this or any genre. Working with The Upstetters at his Black Ark studio Perry created a sound with such a lasting appeal that The Rough Guide includes Super Ape as one of their 100 Essential Reggae releases.

    Double Seven

First 750 Numbered Copies Pressed On 180 Gram Orange Vinyl, Black Vinyl Thereafter

This classic album from 1973 saw its creator, Lee 'Scratch' Perry exploring synths and starting to develop his Black Ark sound - the enigmatic producer was at the time in the process of building his famous studio and honing his ideas about dub as a musical form.

The LP opens with the eerie Kentucky Skank, Perry's ode to KFC, complete with frying chicken sounds, spliced between winding tapes, a ghostly trumpet, and futuristic Moog synthesizer, overdubbed at London's Chalk Farm studios.

U Roy's Double Six and I Roy's High Fashion and Hail Stones illustrate just how strong The Upsetter's deejay material had become, while versions of the Chi-Lites' We Are Neighbours, Sam & Dave's Soul Man and a re-working of Al Green's Love and Happiness (retitled Jungle Lion) all betray the funky soul influence that was increasingly shaping his work.

The backing tracks illustrate the producer at his best; the audio spectrum is fully differentiated while spatial placement an important component - something it would take years for him to achieve at the Black Ark.

    Pearl Mystic

Pearl Mystic is an absolutely thunderous statement of intent for Hookworms (MJ - vox/keys/analogues; JW - guitarist, SS - guitarist; MB - bass; JN - drums). After a portentous couple of years of live shows and limited releases, a debut self-titled EP initially came out on cassette for Sun Araw's Sun Ark label. Soon after, there was a vinyl release on Faux Discx/Gringo Records. Both sold out. During this time their live shows continued to increase in intensity, cementing their reputation treading the boards.

Live and on record, like Spaceman 3, they pointedly subvert the tripped out sound environments of psychedelia with a darkly malevolent punk menace; unlike J.Spaceman et al, there's no chemical assistance, these concepts and feelings come with clarity.

A relationship lost, a battle with depression, and as MJ puts it "a half-hearted suicide attempt" are running narratives throughout the album. Tracks like 'Away/Towards' possess an infectious energy that juxtaposes with a subtext of a bi-polar approach to coping with loss. "Preservation", too, is in keeping with the group's live shows, though deals with existentialism, whilst several Raymond Carver influences are scattered in and among the bold textures of sound. "In Our Time" is inspired by hill MJ would cycle up near Otley in Yorkshire after the break up to catch his favorite view in the world

The record was recorded and produced in MJ's own Suburban Studios - where he's worked on records for Mazes, Eagulls and Spectrals and more.

Indeed, the most impressive thing about Hookworms is that, through this torrent of emotion, there's always the sense that they're in control of it all, so committed are they to this catharsis that they refuse to throw any of it to chance.

    Radio Silence (Speakers Corner)

Radio Silence is the sound of a band fully comfortable in their unique sonic skin. And if an album is simply a snapshot of a work in progress, then this is a perfect portrait, capturing Neil Cowley and his co-conspirators in the right place at the right time. This is the record that he has been working towards, documenting the magical empathy of a unit, who, with thousands of hours under their belt have learnt to breathe and listen as one.
Described by Cowley as music for the 'heart and feet', Radio Silence shifts effortlessly between moments of poetic grace, rip-roaring riffs and Chaplinesque ditties that reminds us that for all his many influences, Cowley's music is as British as 'Test Match Special', warm beer or a bacon sarnie.

Originally released on compact disc and download in April 2010, Radio Silence has proved pinnacle in a hectic year for Neil, in which he has recorded extensively for Adele's new single and album, recorded the theme tune to a worldwide Nokia Cubes advertising campaign, recorded a live session at the famous Maida Vale Studios for BBC Radio 2, toured internationally, drawn mass critical acclaim and sold out his homecoming appearance at London Jazz Festival amongst others.

Radio Silence, as Naim's biggest-selling record of 2010, has been delicately crafted for vinyl at Abbey Road Studios from 24bit masters and pressed using the famous EMI 1400 Press at The Vinyl Factory in Middlesex, UK.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Limited Edition Picture Disc LP Version

Judging from their name, Suicidal Tendencies were never afraid of a little controversy. Formed in Venice, CA, during the early '80s, the group's leader from the beginning was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialized in vicious hardcore early on -- building a huge following among skateboarders, lending a major hand in the creation of skatepunk -- before turning their focus eventually to thrash metal. Early on, the group (whose original lineup included Muir, guitarist Grant Estes, bassist Louiche Mayorga, and drummer Amery Smith) found it increasingly difficult to book shows, due to rumors of its members' affiliation with local gangs and consistent violence at their performances. The underground buzz regarding Suicidal Tendencies grew too loud for labels to ignore though, as the quartet signed on with the indie label Frontier; issuing Muir and company's classic self-titled debut in 1983. The album quickly became the best-selling hardcore album up to that point; its best-known track, Institutionalized, was one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive substantial airplay on MTV, and was eventually used in the Emilio Estevez cult classic movie Repo Man, as well as in an episode for the hit TV show Miami Vice (for which the group made a cameo appearance).

Suicidal Tendencies proved influential for future speed/thrash metal bands, but despite its early success, the quartet's reputation preceded them, as no other record label was willing to take them on (in addition, Los Angeles banned the group from playing around this time, lasting until the early '90s). Not much was heard from the group for several years afterward (leading many to believe that Suicidal had broken up), but Muir and company eventually found a home with Caroline Records. By this time, half of the original lineup had left; Muir and Mayorga were the only holdovers, while guitarist Rocky George and drummer R.J. Herrera rounded out the group. 1987 saw the release of Suicidal's sophomore release, Join the Army, which spawned another popular skatepunk anthem, Possessed to Skate, as more and more metal heads began to be spotted in Suicidal's audience. Soon after, Suicidal was finally offered a major-label contract (with Epic), as another lineup change occurred: Mayorga exited the band, while newcomer Bob Heathcote took his spot; and a second guitarist, Mike Clark, was added as well. This Suicidal lineup's first album together, 1988's How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today, showed that their transformation from hardcore to heavy metal was now complete, as did a compilation of two earlier EPs, 1989's Controlled by Hatred/Feel Like Shit...DÉjà Vu.

Suicidal's first release of the new decade, 1990's Lights, Camera, Revolution, was another success; its video for the explosive You Can't Bring Me Down received repeated airings on MTV's Headbanger's Ball program, while the album (in addition to the Controlled by Hatred comp) would be certified gold in the U.S. a few years later. The release also signaled the arrival of new bassist Robert Trujillo, whose penchant for funk added a new element to the group's sound. The group tried to broaden their audience even further by opening a string of arena shows for prog-metallists Queensrÿche during the summer of 1991. Their next release, 1992's The Art of Rebellion, proved to be one of Suicidal's most musically experimental albums of their career. Muir and Trujillo also teamed up around this time for a funk metal side project, Infectious Grooves (including several other participants, such as Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins) and issued a debut release, The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move. Upset that the group's classic debut had been out of print for several years by this point, Muir decided to re-record the entire record with Suicidal's '90s lineup under the title of Still Cyco After All These Years.

But after one more release, 1994's Suicidal for Life, Suicidal Tendencies decided to hang it up. A pair of compilations were issued in 1997: a best-of set, Prime Cuts, plus Friends & Family. Muir and Trujillo continued to issue further Infectious Grooves releases (Sarsippius' Ark and Groove Family Cyco), in addition to Muir pursuing a solo career under the alias of Cyco Miko (Lost My Brain Once Again) and Trujillo touring and recording as part of Ozzy Osbourne's solo band (appearing on Osbourne's 2001 release, Down to Earth). Muir formed a new version of Suicidal Tendencies in the late '90s (with Clark being the only other familiar face), resulting in such further studio releases as 1999's Freedumb and 2000's Free Your Soul and Save My Mind. Muir and Trujillo joined forces once more for a fourth Infectious Grooves studio release in 2000, Mas Borracho; while another Cyco Miko release surfaced, Schizophrenic Born Again Problem Child, along with a follow-up up to their earlier compilation, Friends & Family, Vol. 2. After releasing the compilation 'Year Of The Cycos' in 2009 that included a selection of all brand new songs from Suicidal Tendencies and side bands Infectious Grooves, NoMercyFool and Cyco Miko, the band released in 2010 the first record in 10 years 'No Mercy Fool!/The Suicidal Family' that included re-recordings of classic jems off the 'Join The Army records' and infamous recording 'Widespread Bloodshed' for Mike Muir and Mike Clark side band No Mercy back in early eighties.

Now the band will be back with their brand new album in 13 years Story has yet to be written!

The Return Of Sound System Scratch

Special one-off dub plate mixes and super rare 45s you can't find anywhere else. 'Long Enough' features Candy Mackenzie on lead vocal to stunning effect, a track as soulful as anything ever recorded at the Black Ark. Candy was part of the Full Experience vocal group that worked on many Lee Perry sessions. There is a fantastic unreleased melodica version of Junior Murvins' Strong Drink, and although we can't be 100% sure, it's probably Augustus Pablo blowing melodica over the top. On an outrageous remix of Jah Jah Ah Natty Dread, Lee Perry himself is the vocalist, sounding like a manic and possessed mixture of Little Richard and Joe Strummer.

CocoRosie are two American-born sisters, Sierra and Bianca, who started making music together in Paris in 2003. Their first album, La Maison de Mon Reve, was released in 2004 and their second album, Noah's Ark, followed in 2005. Their third and most recent album, The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn, came out in 2007. All three of these albums were released worldwide on Touch and Go Records and earned critical acclaim both overseas and at home. The nomadic duo (currently and temporarily residing in New Mexico) spent much of 2008 writing and recording in Buenos Aires, Melbourne, Berlin, New York, and Paris, finding amazing and diverse musicians to collaborate along the way. The result is their 11-song Sub Pop debut, Grey Oceans.

    Skycatcher (Awaiting Repress)

10 Ft. Ganja Plant is back with a followup to last year's critically acclaimed instrumental album, 10 Deadly Shots Vol. ii ("their strongest set to date," according to The Wire). Skycatcher sees 'The Plant' doing what they do best... infusing that old school
roots groove into timeless songs and sounds. This elusive group of reggae purists, who hail from the northeast uS and are rumored to share members with heralded reggae group John Brown's Body, have captured the original 70's reggae spirit in a way that few other modern reggae bands have been able to do.

ROiR, no stranger to classic dub and reggae, signed the band a dozen years ago and have released a catalog of albums that reveal influences and echoes of '70s roots, from the close vocal harmonies of the Meditations to the dark, bass-heavy productions
of Black Ark-era Lee "Scratch" Perry.

Modern roots reggae of the highest order.

    Jaga Jazzist '94-'14

It's hard to believe that the Norwegian 8-piece band (founded on the Horntveth triumvirate - Lars, Martin and Line) is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, in 2014. Not that there aren't other groups that have lasted as long, but look for a group whose primary composer was just 14 when the whole thing began, find a band where five out of its eight current members were there when everything started in 1994, and scope out one that has managed to remain as stylistically enigmatic and impossible to categorise as... well, you get the idea.

And so we thought it fitting to mark the band's 20th year with a unique, limited edition vinyl box set featuring a special reissue of the landmark album 'A Livingroom Hush' (2004). Also in the box: 2 crisp 12s featuring exclusive reworks based on elements from the album Jaga Jazzist Live with Britten Sinfonia from a stellar cast of remixers Warp Records stalwart Clark; breakbeat scientist Machinedrum; Brainfeeder's sonic dreamweaver Teebs; Mellowdrone founder Jonathan Bates aka Big Black Delta; LA-based composer, orchestrator, conductor, multi-instrumentalist and producer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Cosmogramma, You're Dead, Suite For Ma Dukes, Build An Ark); Werkdiscs' rising star MoirÉ; Hoya:Hoya co-founder Illum Sphere; and Stockholm's Invader Ace.

Extended sleeve notes by John Kelman (All About Jazz) come in a beautiful 24 page booklet with archive photography documenting the rise and rise of this iconic collective.

    Studio One Dub Volume 2

Studio One Dub 2 is a second collection bringing together some of the finest dubs from the legendary Studio One Records, Kingston, Jamaica. Dub music was the creation of a generation of brilliant recording studio engineers in Jamaica. But although Clement Coxsone Dodd's Studio One is hailed as the greatest of the Jamaican recording labels, and although many talented engineers worked the board at Dodd's Brentford Road studio over the years (including Sylvan Morris, Syd Bucknor, Overton Scientist Brown and Dodd himself), Studio One was never typically known as a centre for dub. This is because for many fans the studio's commercial and stylistic heyday was in the 1960s, prior to the rise of dub as a distinct sub-genre of Jamaican music in the 1970s. By the 1970s, however, dub music was the rage in Jamaica's sound systems. Always the pioneer - and since Sylvan Morris had left the Studio One operation around 1972 - Coxsone supervised the dubs till leaving Jamaica at the end of the decade. This meant that for the most part, for example, the twelve Studio One dub albums released during the 1970s were mixed by Dodd himself, using the moniker Dub Specialist. Throughout the decade, the mixes became more sophisticated and atmospheric. Along with the first volume of Studio One Dub, the cuts here demonstrate that Studio One's contribution to the innovative musical form of dub was substantial, and go straight to the head of listeners who feel that the only centres for dub were studios such as King Tubby's, Lee Perry's Black Ark, Channel One, or Joe Gibbs's. The tracks on this compilation are taken from this period in the 1970s when dub was the cutting-edge of Jamaican music studio production. Most of them are the dub-version flip-sides of rare Jamaican 45s, and none have appeared on CD before. Michael E. Veal, author of Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae (Wesleyan University Press, 2007).
