The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond

The Hunger Games is a film directed by Gary Ross and based on the best-selling science fiction adventure novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. Set in a post-apocalyptic future time period after the destruction of the current nations of North America, the story follows 16-year old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) who volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games, a televised tournament to the death, in place of her younger sister. In addition to Lawrence, the film stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and Lenny Kravitz.

Executive produced by Academy Award winner T Bone Burnett, The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond Original Soundtrack features the unparalleled and diverse sounds of Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift, Arcade Fire, The Civil Wars, Miranda Lambert, The Decemberists, Neko Case, Kid Cudi and more. Neon Bible

Neon Bible is the second album by Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, released in March 2007 on Merge Records. The majority of the album was recorded in a church that the band bought and renovated. Neon Bible became Arcade Fire's highest charting album at the time, debuting on the Billboard 200 at number two, selling 92,000 copies in its first week and more than 400,000 to date. Being released within a month of similarly successful releases by The Shins (Wincing the Night Away) and Modest Mouse (We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank), Neon Bible was cited as an example of the popularization of indie rock.

    Reflektor

Reflektor is Arcade Fire's fourth studio album. Led by singer Win Butler and his wife RÉgine Chassagne, Arcade Fire released its last album, The Suburbs, in 2010. It's longer than [2010 album] 'The Suburbs' - it's a double record - mostly down to the fact that the songs are a lot longer, Butler recently said of the upcoming project. I mean, 'Reflektor' is seven-and-a-half, there's another couple of seven-minute songs on the record and so it made more sense to stretch it out to two records with two distinct sides. It's more of a classic double LP vibe where you have to flip the side and it takes you to a different place.

Islands hail from Montreal, flowering from the same scene that gave us Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. Islands' Anti debut Arm's Way finds Thorburn and crew in full command of a palette of classic pop colorings, from the '70s rock heroics of ôThe
Armö to the slinky cinematic pop of ôI Feel Evil Creeping In.ö Their previous album, Return to the Sea, earned the band rave reviews and a fanatical U.S. audience which has undoubtedly carried over to the sweeping confidence and symphonic scope of Arm's Way. Born And Thrown On A Hook

Drink Up Buttercup may hail from Philadelphia but the geography of their debut album Born & Thrown On A Hook is less easily located on a physical map. It's an occasionally surreal mythology filled with tales of hopelessly flawed characters, star-crossed lovers, drunks, fairy tales & bad trips. It exists in a world touched upon previously by Tom Waits, Hans Christian Anderson and Lloyd Kaufman while musically it follows the direct lineage of classic songwriting: Bowie, The Beatles & The Beach Boys' late 60s lysergia, early Roxy Music, Sabbath's bass heavy pulse & the crescendos of Arcade Fire.

Scratch My Back...And I'll Scratch Yours

Rather than make a traditional covers record, I thought it would be much more fun to create a new type of project in which artists communicated with each other and swapped a song for a song, i.e. you do one of mine and I'll do one of yours, hence the title - Scratch My Back - And I'll Scratch Yours. Peter Gabriel

Scratch My Back And I'll Scratch Yours is a series of song exchanges in which Gabriel and other leading artists reinterpret each other's songs. The first half of this double album, titled Scratch My Back, was originally released in 2010. Gabriel covers work by seasoned superstars like David Bowie, Paul Simon and Lou Reed, but he also took on marvelous interpretations of work by younger acts like Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and Radiohead. In 2013, most of these artists returned the favour on And I'll Scratch Yours.

The reciprocating artists opted for differing approaches to Peter's songs. A few chose to radically reinterpret the original material, in the process leaving it barely recognisable - Lou Reed's snarling Solsbury Hill or the frighteningly futuristic version of Mother Of Violence by Brian Eno, co-writer of David Bowie's Heroes covered by Gabriel on Scratch My Back. Other contributors include Arcade Fire (Games Without Frontiers), Elbow (Mercy Street) and Regina Spektor (Blood Of Eden).

    At Mount Zoomer

Recorded and engineered by drummer Arlen Thompson, this is Wolf ParadeÆs second album for Sub Pop. Their first, Apologies to the Queen Mary, came out in the fall of 2005. For their sophomore release the band committed itself to a period of experimentation, recording long improvisational sessions in the Montreal church owned by The Arcade Fire. These tracks were then cut and pasted into discrete compositions. The result is a complex matrix of components and modules that, thanks to the collective efforts of each band member, never feels labored or fussy. From the nimble opening strains of ôSoldierÆs Grin,ö to the eleven-minute aggro dirge of ôKissing the Beehive,ö Wolf Parade displays a collective authority of the songs around them with a refreshing absence of ownership. Where Apologies to the Queen Mary could be read as a good-natured volleyball match between Dan Boeckner and singer/keyboardist Spencer Krug, the new album shows the band as a fully coordinated moving front, a good one at that.

    Innerpartysystem

After self-producing The Download EP, a six-song batch of demos, Innerpartysystem recruited a group of A-list producers and mixers to work with on their self-titled debut including Joel Hamilton (Book of Knots, Sparklehorse, Blue Tip), Mark Needham (The Killers, Pete Yorn), Spike Stent (Björk, Arcade Fire) and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Killers) and Stuart Price, Seal, The Killers). Innerpartysystem's debut deftly toes the line between anthemic pop-rock and melodramatic electro-pop.

The origins of Innerpartysystem can be traced to 2002, when drummer Jared Piccone and vocalist Patrick Nissley attended school together in Reading, Pennsylvania. The duo started writing songs together, inspired by both their love of electronic music and hardcore punk. Piccone and Nissley then recruited multi-instrumentalists Kris Barman and Jesse Cronan to join the band and their sound moved further into samples and the electronic direction that can be heard on their debut.

Nick Diamonds' polymorphous pop band, Islands, is back with their third studio album, Vapours: a collection of fun, highly listenable tunes that effortlessly intertwine Motown grooves, electro-Krautrock anolog synths, and even some slinky horn charts. All this over Nick Diamonds' undeniable melodies, giving us the one of the best collections of modern pop songs since David Byrne rolled out the big suits. After making a splash with their 2006 debut, Return to the Sea, performed with a cast of characters from Montreal's thriving music scene (including members of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade), ex-Unicorns Nick Diamonds and Jaime Thompson parted ways for 2007's Arm's Way. The third Final Fantasy full-length and the first for Domino, Heartland is the product of nine months work in four separate countries. The release is a fully orchestral record, designed to exist simultaneously as an album, a 45-minute piece of orchestral music and a set of songs for looped violin and voice. Work began in earnest in November of 2008, when Owen Pallett and Arcade Fire drummer Jeremy Gara flew to Reykjavik to work at The Greenhouse, Valgeir Siggurdsson's studio (Bjork's Medulla, Bonnie Prince Billy's The Letting Go) with engineer Mio ??rrison at the board. The orchestra was recorded in January of 2009, in Prague, with the Czech Symphony. Other guests include Matt Smith (Nifty), Reg Vermue (Gentleman Reg) and Nico Muhly. Rusty Santos, who produced Animal Collective's Sung Tongs and mixed Panda Bear's Person Pitch, was taken on as mixer.

    Between The Needles And Nightfall

Between The Needles And Nightfall was conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked Marco Benevento and his trio over three days. To achieve the colors he envisioned, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bend toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. He then transferred the tracks to his home studio, taking the next two months to cut, loop and shape the pieces into full-fledged songs.

For the final mixes, Benevento handed off his work to three of his favorite engineers: Mell Dettmer (Sunn O))), Eyvind Kang, Jesse Lauter (Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins) and Vid Cousins (Amon Tobin, Kid Koala). The results range from the day-glo electro-rock of It Came From You to the simply-stated lullaby Illa Frost to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem Two Of You.

    Trust Now

Trust Now is the keystone album of Brooklyns Prince Rama. The album takes the kaleidoscopic mysticism of ancient devotional music and focuses it through the fierce urgency and archetypal language of pop, forming an environment that is both accessible and impenetrable.

Deep synths rise from a sparkling sea of gamelans and prayer bells as tribal drums pound the earth with the hypnotic power to heal or destroy. Voices carry captivating and haunting melodies that shine like the diamond jewels of old Bollywood soundtracks spilling over dark wave dance floors.

First conceived as a ritual to be performed live, the songs were fittingly recorded inside a 19th century church in Seattle by Scott Colburn (Sun City Girls, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire). As their 5th full-length album, and first as a duo, Trust Now is perhaps Prince Ramas most focused, cohesive and powerful album to date.

    Parklife (Special Edition)

To celebrate the 21st Anniversary of their debut release, Blur's breakthrough 1994 album Parklife has now been remastered from the original tapes by Frank Arkwright (The Smiths, Arcade Fire, New Order, Joy Division), with the remastering overseen by legendary original producer, Stephen Street. Expanded across two discs, the LP format of the Parklife remaster is cut on heavyweight 180g audiophile vinyl and is housed in a replica of the original sleeve artwork.
