ELLE-GRO-1008xAnthony Wilson Trio
Our GangComposer-arranger-bandleader and guitarist Anthony Wilson, the 32-year old son of big band maestro Gerald Wilson, is one of the most brilliant musicians working in the US jazz scene today. A recipient of the IAJE's Gil Evans Fellowship Award, Wilson's rich, fluid and easy going style, with it's seductive references to Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell, is much in evidence on his latest work, Our Gang from the Groove Note label out of Los Angeles.
Playing with a much pared down structure of guitar trio with organ and drums (his previous recordings have been with much larger outfits) gave Wilson the freedom to focus more on his own inventive and incomparable skills as soloist, and his close rapport with drummer Mark Ferber and organist Joe Bagg, with whom he has been playing with regularly for the last 2-3 years, pays off richly in this session.
Wilson's previous work for the Mama label received a great deal of critical and commercial recognition. The self-titled debut album hit number 1 on the Gavin charts and received a Grammy nomination in the Large Jazz Ensemble category in 1997. His second album Goat Hill Junket also achieved great success both critically and on radio while his third album released in 1999 features talents such as Jeff Clayton, Greg Ellis and Jack Nimitz all performing a suite commissioned by the IAJE. Wilson also received a Downbeat International Critics Poll award for Composer Deserving Wider Recognition in 2000.
Wilson's newest effort is the culmination of all his most recent ideas, in both originals and standards, and this album includes some stunning performances of standards like Chitlins Con Carne (By Kenny Burrell), I Want You - She's So Heavy (from Abbey Road), and Prelude To A Kiss (Strayhorn). The album also contains further evidence of Anthony Wilson's skill and talent as a composer as demonstrated by original compositions like Our Gang and Britta's Blues. The sterling back-up by Ferber and Bagg also deserves special mention with organist Bagg in particular exchanging great solos on the Hammond B-3 with Wilson.
Recorded by the A-list team of producer Joe Harley (ECM, Enja) and Mike Ross (engineer) at Cello Studios in Hollywood, this remarkable session will serve not only to cement the much vaunted reputation established with the Mama albums but will in fact greatly extend Wilson's high profile position as one jazz's finest talents.1. FrogtownAnthony Wilson, best known as a jazz guitarist, has released an organic, occasionally 'noir-ish'-sounding album on which he sets up and sings within cinematic musical landscapes, proving himself to be an equally compelling story teller. Frogtown is an area of Los Angeles, whose official name is Elysian Valley. People live there but other than a lush stretch of the L.A. riverbed, there's not much there, which is how the people like it. The same can't be said of this record, which will have you wondering from where came this Anthony Wilson? ... the album's sound and the deftly drawn arrangements (for some reason uncredited) perfectly compliment Wilson's dreamy, rural intentions (producer Joe Harley gets a 'audio consultation' credit). The sound achieves a rare level of transparency, delicacy and three-dimensionality in today's hard-edged audio world. Bernie Grundman cut lacquers from what I assume were high resolution files. I doubt you'll ask yourself 'why buy the vinyl?' after your first listen. - Music = 10/11; Sound = 10/11 - Michael Fremer, AnalogPlanet.com.
Frogtown, a new album of original instrumental and vocal songs, is guitarist Anthony Wilson's widest-ranging work to date, and his debut as a vocalist. Wilson enlisted Grammy-winning producer/bassist Mike Elizondo (Gary Clark Jr., Kimbra, Ry Cooder), a longtime friend and musical colleague, to help him realize this collection of layered and personal sonic stories.
Featuring a cast of renowned musicians - drummers Jim Keltner and Matt Chamberlain, violinist Petra Haden, and keyboardists Patrick Warren and Josh Nelson - each song on Frogtown evokes a distinct feeling and landscape, and takes the listener someplace new. Virtuosic guitar and ensemble work, well-made songs and detailed arrangements, and intimate vocals are the driving forces of the album.
An album highlight is the song Your Footprints - written by Wilson with songwriter Dan Wilson (Adele, Taylor Swift, Semisonic) - featuring a special guest appearance from iconic jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd. The collaboration with Lloyd alludes to Wilson's deep jazz roots, and evokes memories of his father, the late, great composer/bandleader Gerald Wilson. Other songs summon varied musical influences - FM radio of the 1970's, Ry Cooder's diverse body of work, children's rhymes, guitar styles from the 1920's to the present day.
Frogtown travels into, through, and beyond genres; the album's melodies and lyrics guide the listener through tender and complex emotional landscapes. Anthony Wilson steps confidently into the center of the frame for this musical and personal portrait.1. She Won't Look Back

At LastLauren White is an extremely talented 20-year old from Texas who has been studying under the same vocal coach as Norah Jones. Lauren blends the sensuality and vulnerability of Norah Jones with the vocal range of Linda Ronstadt combined with a voice that exhibits both emotional depth as well as nuance and delicacy!
Lauren's first album features a wide array of songs, the album opens with a Billie Holiday styled tune My One & Only, then drops to the darker overtones of the Anthony Wilson arranged Love For Sale, and transitions into a swinging Mack The Knife. This album also includes memorable covers of popular songs like Blue Bayou (Roy Orbison), Superstar (Carpenters), and to the country influenced, Why They Call It Falling (Lee Ann Womack). Lauren White also displays an impressive talent for song writing with three original songs here including a retro-ish Do You Remember, a heartbreaking ballad All I Do Is Cry and an up-tempo Brand New Love.
Featuring Anthony Wilson on guitar, Bill Cunliffe on piano and Ricky Woodward on sax, the album was recorded at Sunset Sound by Joe Harley (producer) and Mike Ross (engineer). The all analogue two inch 24-track masters were mixed down to 1/2 inch 30 ips stereo at LA-FX in Burbank, CA. Oblation (Awaiting Repress)Cult rock outfit FLOOR (Steve Brooks (also of TORCHE) - guitar, vocals; Anthony Vialon - guitar; Henry Wilson - drums) have released Trick Scene, the fourth track from their highly anticipated new album 'Oblation'. The song is streaming now at The Onion A/V Club.
Regarding the new track, Anthony Vialon comments: Like a lot of our songs, 'Trick Scene' is partly open for interpretation. It's simply about people who use sexuality, or whatever, to further their agenda. Focused on things external to themselves, they eventually get played by their own game. Nonetheless, they're in control and have a choice.1. Oblation

Arms & HandsCornetist and composer Kirk Knuffke is one of modern jazz's most skilled navigators of the divide between inside and outside, freedom and swing. On his latest album, Arms & Hands, he assembles the ideal trio to bridge that divide. Joined by bassist Mark Helias and drummer Bill Goodwin, along with special guests Brian Drye (trombone), Daniel Carter (alto saxophone), and Jeff Lederer (soprano/tenor saxophone), Knuffke creates a set of music that is both engaging and inventive.
Helias is best known for his work with jazz experimentalists like Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Marilyn Crispell, and Gerry Hemingway, his band BassDrumBone with Hemingway and Ray Anderson, and his trio Open Loose with Tony Malaby and Tom Rainey. Goodwin, on the other hand, is recognized as a premiere straight-ahead drummer, through his decades-long relationship with saxophonist Phil Woods and credits that include such giants as Bill Evans, Tony Bennett, Dexter Gordon, Jim Hall, Gary Burton, and Art Pepper.
The chemistry between the trio is irrefutable on Arms & Hands, which is a showcase for the immense creativity of all three musicians. Knuffke intentionally wrote compositions that took advantage of Goodwin's gift for groove and swing while remaining open enough to allow the improvisations to wander however far afield the moment might call for.
Kirk Knuffke is a prolific composer and improviser who has worked with a host of incredible musicians including Roswell Rudd, William Parker, Uri Caine, Myra Melford, Allison Miller, Steve Swell, John Zorn, Dave Douglas, Billy Hart, Steven Bernstein, and Mary Halvorson. Internationally, he has played with ensembles at jazz festivals in Saalfeldan Austria, Willisau Switzerland, The North Sea Jazz festival in Holland, The Moers festival as well as festival dates in Canada, Mexico, Italy and France. He is currently a member of the Matt Wilson Quartet. Knuffke is also a member of the Mark Helias Quartet, the Andrew D'angelo Big Band, Josh Roseman's Extended Constellations, Kenny Wollesen's Wollesonic and Allison Miller's Boom tic Boom. Knuffke's leader debut, Big Wig, was released by Clean Feed in 2008, followed by the trio recordings Chew Your Food and Amnesia Brown and the quartet album Chorale. He has also recorded several duo CDs with pianist Jesse Stacken and one with percussionist Mike Pride, and co-led the collaborative trio Sifter with Mary Halvorson and Matt Wilson and a quartet with saxophonist Ted Brown.1.
